[Q] Poor battery life. Defective SGS3 unit? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys!
I'm experiencing some problems with my Galaxy S III.
I've been changing and testing ROM's for my Galaxy S III for a few months, and i decided that the best ROM for my device is the ARHD (Thx Mike).
But every ROM i try i experience poor battery life.
I got 1% drain/4 hours with everything turned off.
If I'm playing a game like Jetpack Joyride or Plague Inc... 30 mins of gameplay is ~30% battery (94-63%).
What can i do? I know the "wipe battery stats" trick, in CWM recovery, but it's not a big difference.
It is possible that my unit is defective (purchase date 27 July 2012). I got EXCELLENT battery life with the ICS 4.0.4 ROM, unrooted. But if i put the old ICS back, i got the same thing...
What can i do? Is a "bad" file in my phone that corrupts everything?
Every ideea is welcomed.
Thx.

Very unlikely but a full wipe and flash a stock rom with no user apps will allow you to test before asking service centre .
jje

I've done a superwipe before installing the ARHD13, and also done wipe in AROMA.

1%/4hours is very good, that wont get any better, it would get you 400 hours of standby time.
Your experience with bad blife when playing games makes me think the drainage is mostly caused by screen & cpu. Try lower brightness, battery save mode in Settings, and/or diffrrent cpu governor settings ( governor determines how fast cpu steps up) . It doesnt seem to be ROM relatef, more kernel related. Try a diffrrent kernel.

Screen 50-55% with AUTO.
Power saving activated (CPU limit and no vibration).
I am running ARHD 13 with Perseus kernel. Can you recommend me a simple and good kernel?

Please help... i need advice for a good kernel.
I don't know what to do...

siyah kernel is a good one will help in your battery here is the link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1709686 and btw 1%/4 hours is just fine but the 2 games you mentioned drains a lot of battery that is the normal your battery is just fine and btw if you downgraded to ICS i would recommend to install the cell standby fix that may give you up to 1%/9 or 10 hours that is pretty good and here is the link to it http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1732722 download the flashable zip file and just flash it using the clock work mod

Standby time doesn't sound that bad to me, do you get that sort of drain with every game? Otherwise it might just be those games aren't well optimised so use more than you expect.
If you were experiencing terrible standby time it might be the kernel or a rouge app using data/cpu cycles/gps in the background but as that seems to be fine it would indicate this isn't the issue.
Have you tried another battery, if you are finding the same with many different ROMs it is more likely to be that your battery is just getting old. My original battery won't last a day already, stick a new battery in and the life increases massively.
I got one of these and it is much better than the standard battery http://www.amazon.co.uk/Warranty-An...PK/ref=sr_1_12?ie=UTF8&qid=1351932644&sr=8-12

I don't have many games, because i don't crack anything (only original).
But on every game i get a huge battery drain (Jetpack Joyride, Plague Inc, Jumping Slime). Most of the games, are not a source of CPU/GPU stress, but the battery drain is huge 1%/1-2 minutes.
On Wi-Fi, is not so bad... 30 mins of browsing/downloading is 8-10% battery usage.
I don't think the problem is the battery, the phone is about 4-5 months old. What else can it be?
Is there any solution for me?

-NEWS-
I have done a full wipe, and installed ARHD14 with the latest Siyah kernel.
I have done the following settings:
CPU SETTINGS: Gentle Fair Sleepers -YES
CPU IDLE AND POWER SETTINGS: Idle + LPA (Default)
CPU UNDERVOLTING: -25mV
CPU SCALING SETTINGS: pegasusq
MAX CPU LOCK: Dual Core
SCALING MAX FREQ: 1Ghz
SCALING MIN FREQ: 200Mhz
Can i go further? What can i do?
The battery is 15-20% better, if i can say...

Battery problem?
Maybe it is l like the battery problem so maybe get it replaced.

Ok, i will try to test it on a Li-ION battery analyzer, to test the real amperage of the battery.

Many people told me to replace the battery, cuz is likely to be defective.
I will buy the Seidio 3500mAh model.

[Q] Wolfbreak's V6 - battery issues...help!

I'm a long time lurker, first time poster, so please...go easy on me as I'm still trying to figure out the lingo and what not!
Anyhow, I just recently installed V6 and everything is absolutely great - except my battery goes down faster than <insert whatever reference you want here..hockey goalie, boxing, sexual>
I initially tried flashing over V5 and that's when the issue started - V5 was fine the way it was, but was starting to eat up the battery a little quicker - maybe due to a couple of new apps installed? did a full wipe and reinstalled v6 and am experiencing the same issue
I don't know if it's a problem with my actual battery or what...anyone have any suggestions?
Fully charge the battery until the green charged light goes off then reboot into XRecovery and wipe your battery stats.

Alternatively, there's the battery calibration app.
Alternatively, build your own stock ROM. Wolfs ROM has IMHO too many uneccesary tweaks that drain the battery... although his performance ROM has awesome battery (I'm using it right now)... lol I dunno why..

Well its tough to explain u, but use set cpu and reduce the maximum processing speed to 384. The battery will be consumed to the lowest. I have done the same. And my x10 works for min 1.5 day.

um..I have no-frills cpu - figure it's the same, or is set cpu a better app?
max clock freq is at 998Mhz; min at 245; governor is at ondemand (gotta read up on this..) and i/o scheduler is on deadline..should I change any of the other stuff?
thanks!
I use juce defender plus and if needed I could go a couple of days without charging.

Not sure if my problem is the same but my phone WB v6 (even on v5) will turn off when used heavily i guess (less than 5min video games seem to be ok but other apps will do it randomly). but the battery will say like 65% whatever it should be from the use so far after a reboot most of the time i have then same % as before the umm crash but sometimes it shows 25% and turns off then if i leave it for a bet i get back to the higher % but will still crash with a little app use. Frustrating as i LOVE the ROM!
So far no crash during phone calls. But the crashes are no rhyme or reason. I have tried calibrating and full flash but it came back.
(would have posted in the ROM thread but i have too few postes and this seemed a better place)
Hung Wei Lo: which version are you using? Try lowering min frequency, adjust settings (like brightness). I'm on v6 with Freekernel and I get 2-3 days on a full charge. Maybe an app is preventing your phone from entering deep sleep.
Rabbit Stew: are you overclocking? Try a full wipe including battery stats, then installing v6s. The stock version should be the most stable.
Here's two methods that work for me.
To me the battery calibration app, is USELESS, no offence to the developer.
1. Wiping battery stats: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=943626
or
2. Optimizing battery with just a charger and phone: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1071885
Don't go anymore then 5 tries.
I figured I'd give an update on this..
Things had magically sorted themselves out - battery life got better and better each day, though not to the point most of you are getting (I'm talking MAYBE 14 hours of minimal usage - the odd facebook check, random text message etc)
As suggested, I've set the min. frequency to the lowest possible, screen timeout is at like 30 seconds
As of the past couple of days, I've been getting half that...no new apps installed all the same settings...wifi is off, brightness is set to 25%, no gps usage all I have on is data. As an example, I charged her up and unplugged it with an hour to go before I was done at work. an hour ride on the subway doing nothing but listening to some tunes, and I'm down to 60%...in two hours
I'm at wits end here...according to cpu spy here are my most recent stats:
998 - 0:01:49 - 35%
576 - 0:00:-4 - 1%
384 - 0:00:03 - 3%
245 - 0:00:52 - 17%
deep sleep - 0:02:11 - 42%
thoughts (related to this issue)? suggestions? ideas?
is calibrating the battery will solve the phone randomly restart??
In my infinite wisdom, I'd have to seriously doubt it...did you do a fresh install?

[Q] Battery issue

So, over the past few days I've been noticing a few problems with my phone, all of which have to do with the battery. After installing fauxes OC 1.3ghz kernel I noticed a drop in usages before the phone died, that's a given. So i flashed his enhanced 1ghz kernel instead, but still notice bad battery drops when im using it. It doesn't drop 40% over night or anything, only about 6%. But, if i turn the phone off and back on the % jumps up. Sometimes 20%. Is there anything wrong with the battery, or the phone?
Try calibrating the battery.
i haven't doe that since my first phone. How would i go about doing that.

Also, with faux's kernels check your CPU clocking with setCPU, or something similar. Somtimes it will lock at the max clock speed which will contribute to quick battery drain. I'm on his stock enhanced and getting close to 2 days with moderate use.
How do you get two days of battery?! Thar's intense! I haven't been able to get past the 15 or 16 hours with the stock kernel, neither with faux's stock enhanced! Do you usually drop your cpu speed while it's in your pocket or something? Or do I have a bad battery? Because I've been really concerned about this battery not lasting the monster time it is supposed to last...

I have uv and profiles set up in setCPU. I'm actually a little amazed by how good it's been since re-installing all of my mods (went back to stock recovery due to some issues).
If you're experience battery jumps then install the fix noted in the calibration instructions. Most likely you're battery isn't charging to full capacity, so that coupled with the improperly reported stats make it seem much worse than it is. The process is a bit time consuming, but it did work for me.

Well I have Alien #4 custom rom and it actually has the battery fix so it shows the 1% increase/decrease and I recently did a battery calibration by waiting til it got to 100% with an app that deletes the battery stats as if you would do with recovery mode. I also have CWM recovery and everything doing fine there, my kernel is now Faux's 1.3GHz but limited with SetCPU to 1GHz, and I don't know if it'll get me a better battery life just that kernel. What do you mean by uv? And I have profiles set for when the screen is off and when its charging but nothing else apart from the 1GHz setting. Is it normal that I only have 2 scaling options? Powersave and performace?
Thank you. I will be trying this tomorrow when I have the huge amount of time needed to complete this. And uv means under volt.

gaming massive battery drain!!

i have the elegant white rom,its awesome low ram consumption speed etc.
BUT first to change stock rom(original from manifacturer)i could play 2 hours and 1/2 sometimes 3 without trouble with battery at 30/35% left now i play 5 mins and my battery goes from 93% to 87% in 5 min
so 6%x12=72%battery lost in 1 hours its bad really bad! i also installed the battery fix but notthing!in idle without playing i lost 2/3% per hours so this is good.
someone have my same trouble? it is normal?if so i should install back stock rom?
if i get stock rom again the battery should be fine?
the elegant rom is on stock 2.3.7 i had 2.3.3 when i bought this phone
sorry for bad english i have not much time
thx everyone

Roms based on CM7.2 do drain battery massively compared to stock so going back to stock would help.
Battery callibration does not help - see Here
Same problem here... Living with it cuz stock has just become old and lazy
But if you really want battery switch to stock its way better than cm

There isn't a noticeable difference in both versions in terms of battery life. However, 5.7 has better performance and is noticeable.
You can try underclocking to something like 730 MHZ and save a decent amount of battery life without losing performance. Check this OC kernel out:
OC zImage
Also, use Cyanogenmod, ADW launcher without customizations is faster than the stock touch-wiz UI launcher.

For all those who r shouting that battery calibration doesnt improve battery.. Did the XDA said it improves battery life?? Do u ppl know wats the meaning of calibration?? Calibrating means adjusting something to the accurate value.. Not improving the value!! Even we never said it ll improve battery life.. Battery calibration just calibrates the reading to more accuarte one. So let the ppl calibrate it. Else leave. It ll automatically gets adjusted after 1 or 2 week.. U can see urself the change..

Yes, many members on XDA said that callibration improves battery life. The battery indicator on your status bar does not use batterystatus.bin. It does not automatically adjust after 1 week or 2. It re-calibrates every time you charge!
Read the article posted by XDA for more:
google-engineer-debunks-myth-wiping-battery-stats-does-not-improve-battery-life/
well i dont know about you all
but on my phone battery percantage isnt that accurate
cause when i unplug phone from charger and just open game or do something battery percantage goes to like 90%
but when my battery percantage is low like 18% it holds 30mins on 18%
I've tested many roms here and stock rod do tend to have better battery life, but... When i tested the RAZRv3 by TeamCooper, it had extremly good battery life.
When i got my Ace it had froyo, that lasted about 2.5-3 days. I upgraded to gingerbread official, battery lasted about 1.5-2 days on. Then i tried several custom stock roms and they all lasted about 1-2 days.
After that i started testing CM7 (both 7.1 and 7.2) roms and most of them lasted 12-18 hours (i used the wifi disables 3g function and some other tweaks to last the battery longer otherwise those roms would not have been usable)
Then i got to the RAZRv3 i used it for 2 weeks and the battery was amazing, it lasted easily for 3 days with no other tweaks than "wifi disables 3g" and also the performance was good. No lag!
Then i tested the CM7.2byFAT and the battery was awful but i really liked the rom so i keep 3g disabled when i dont use internet (all background apps use 2g internet) and now the battery last for 2 days.
As i've tested.... 3g takes really alot of battery in CM7 roms but in RAZRv3 (cm7.1 based) it worked like a charm.
So.. Everyone who wants really good battery life should test RAZRv3 that can be found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1478807

Battery Life Tips?

I was wondering if any of you people could be kind enough to give me some more battery tips for my new SGS3.
I'm getting around 4-5% / hour battery drain on standby. I have 2 GMail accounts on sync.
Here's what I've done:
-> Removed Kik Messenger because it was commandeering an outrageous amount of Wakelock Time (about 5-11% of Wakelock Time in 4-7 hours).
-> Installed Omega v5.0 (latest).
-> Still on Stock Kernel
-> Changed my WiFi Policy to "Only when Plugged in"
Turn off automatic synchronizatikn for fcbk email or other accounts.

What does Facebook sync anyway? I always thought it was just once to get the contact pictures. I will disable it now
I've been using Foxhound and Siyah kernel, super combo. I can honestly say it's the best performance/battery life on any android device I've used, 6+ hours of screen on consistently - wifi/gps on, 3gmails autosyncing, autobrightness, 1hr>calls, 50+texts, light browsing, redditt, Google Music... Battery life is so subjective though depending on your apps, usage, cell signal, etc.
Experiment! All things being equal, in my experience its the kernels that make the biggest difference in significant battery life improvements, with the exception of stock roms vs. AOSP/AOKP, battery life doesn't differ very much minus bloatware in the various roms. And if you're a flashaholic like me you'll actually have to wait a few charge cycles to get an accurate representation of battery performance for your phone.

Thanks for the big post! ^v^. I am going to flash the SiyahKernel. But after turning Facebook Sync and the Wifi Policy (which I found out about today).
My battery is at 93% at 2h 01m 05s (also my battery goes down to 99% as soon as I take it off the charger). So thats 6% in 2 hours which is 3% / hour ! Getting there ^^
Apparently going to 99% immediatelly after the charger is normal for Samsung devices. So I wouldn't count that as reduction.
I dont use aftermarket kernels and roms, I have disabled a few stock programs I do not use and get a very decent battery with the 2x battery saver. I had already ordered a secondary battery which is on its way actually as well, so ill be covered from there on

I don't think there are any OC/UV guides in the SGS3 forums but you could search XDA to acquaint yourself, there many writeups on the subject. Make sure have ADB and are familiar with it before so you can recover if necessary from any mishaps. Every processor has a different tolerance to OC/UV so there isn't a tried and true method of implementing it you just have to use trial and error.
I won't get in to it too much but undervolting and underclocking are related but different. Undervolting effectively ask the processor to run with less power from the battery at a specific clock speed or frequency. Underclocking would be reducing the overall frequency of the processor depending on the load. They can be used independently or together.

Ah thanks a-lot. Would creating a profile to limit the CPU to 300 MHz MAX during screen off save battery also?
I have SetCPU installed and have flashed to SiyahKernel now but haven't fiddled with it yet.

Download extweaks from the market instead to configure Siyah. Extweaks hasn't been optimized for the SGS3 yet but it works better than SetCPU with Siyah, it also has descriptions of what each setting does.
If you aren't a gamer you could even toggle two of the cores off, definitely will increase your battery without much if any performance hit in real usage.

How is your tf201's battery life?

Just out of curious, how is your tf201's battery life? just want to see how each different rom works with the battery life.
by replying, could you please provide the follow info?
ROM+version:
Kernel:
CPU governor:
upper/lower cpu freq limit:
battery duration: discharging time + screen time
if possible, attach a battery discharging chart would be nice.
Thank you
Edit:
here is my own observations:
ROM+version: CM10 (no cherry pick) + flash very update when it is released
Kernel: default
CPU governor: On Demand
upper/lower cpu freq limit: 102 / 1600 MHz
battery duration: discharging time + screen time :
I have a total of 7.5+ hours of continuous online streaming videos
In daily use: 3 days of discharging with 5+ hrs of screen time (GPS: on, WIFI: never on when sleep, Sync: on)
Re Battery Life
This is a big one for me...
I've had my prime for about 4 weeks and have had a new rom every week...
The stock rom it came with .28 did have lags and generally seam not so smooth.
Battery life seamed quite good...
So unlocked installed TWRP and on to a better OS
First was AndroWook 2.1.
Battery was quite good Tried a number of variations but would still get screen tearing on the left hand side
Tried --[ROM] 7/5/12 Prime w/ Sense Appeal 9.4.2.28 Beats,Tweaked-- next
And yes it did seem more stable and had great battery life but the visuals were too over the top for me and some panels had white on grey and were a little challenging to decipher
Gave CM9 RC2 a go next... Love CM9 been running it on my SG2 since Jan CM7 before that... Love their work...
Installed it on the prime and had the wifi reboot issue where as soon as the wifi goes on or off it soft boots again and again and again... Ran it with wifi off and got very good battery life for a couple of nights but i really need wifi...
Ran Aokp next.. Love this.. Lots of interface tweaks and customisations. very stable very responsive probably the best rom I've tried but the battery life was woeful.../ Cut my battery life if half... 8 to 10 hours at most... less with wifi...
So now a month later I've come back to AndoWook and a stock kernel, cause i need stability and long battery life
Will probably settle on this for awhile till CM10 or AOKP JB gets outa Alpha and into Betta
All installs were with the default kernel image and default settings. Except AOKP there i used the conservative governor
Stock ROM .28
MODD:
1. build.prop TWEAK
2. ATP TWEAK v7
---- sio
---- tune.sh max
3. Overclock on 1.4GHz screen on / 1.0GHz screen off (interactive)
---- I make some profiles
4. RAM all the time on 500-700 mb
Autokill
With this my battery life is perfect! I never have a problem with AAaaaaaAAAAaaa i dont have any more battery! =D

Hard to say exactly because I have it in the keyboard dock a lot. At work, the keyboard dock sits on my desk and I put the prime in it whenever it is not in use. With moderate usage throughout the work day and then heavier usage in the evenings, by the time I'm done for the day I have often drained the dock battery down near 0% but the Prime itself is usually around 60%. So I wonder if I didn't have the dock, would I run out of juice on the prime? It's unclear though because at work I use a lot of USB accessories hooked up to the dock which may be responsible for the drain on its battery. I have a USB wired Ethernet stick that seems to really drain the dock battery - so its kind of hard to tell.
Given the usage above though, if I start out the day with a full charge on both dock and prime, it gets me through the entire day and up until bedtime without another charge - even if I watch a movie on it in the hotel room at night.
This is completely stock except rooted and unused apps frozen with Titanium backup.
Oh, and PS: This is running in balance mode all the time.
