I havn't been able to find any topics on this, I'm not really sure what question to ask..
Is there a way for the phone to truly multitask? What I mean is, go to a webpage, and while the page is loading, back out and do something else, like send a text or something, all while the page loads in the background? Or, even better, after a page is loaded, back out to the homescreen, do something, and then go back to the webpage right where I left off, without the page having to reload? And then other things like, for example, the game Draw Something. if I'm in the game and I back out to the homescreen and then go back to the game, it completely reloads the game instead of just picking up where I left off.
I know this is possible IN GENERAL, as my OG evo could multi-task the way I've stated above. Is it possible with the Evo LTE?
EDIT: Actually, I'm very sorry. I meant to ask if this was possible for a stock Evo LTE. But I just came across a site mentioning all the bugs with the phone, including multitasking. Now I'm thinking about rooting, and flashing Cyanogen

Root to get what you want! HTC only supplies us with the hardware. Our devs give us the goods.

if you want to stay with sense and use the multi task you can flash the mod created by zepp works great also flex zip for multi tasking... or they're are several sense roms with the multi task fix... but cm rom its a nice option for aosp and multi task
HTC EVO LTE
Or if u like stock flash stock w/goodies by flex. I'd only use 2.14-2.16 version though. There are a lot of bugs in 2.17-2.18 that need to be worked out for quite a few people.

Hey all,
So I was on the phone with my bro and wanted to take a picture of something while I was talking to him. So I hit the Home button, got to the main screen, clicked on my Camera icon and it said "Camera not available while using phone". So I did a search on the forums and only found this thread. It made mention of 3rd party apps but is/are there a rom in development that overcome this limitation? If not, what are some recommended apps to use. Honestly, I like all the features in the stock Vibrant camera app and didn't know if any would actually utilize all their options. This isn't a OMG my phone sucks item, it'd just be filed under things that would be nice to have since my old iPhone 3g actually had this capability.
Any recommendations/help are always appreciated.
FxCamera is what I use. I like it.
My old G1 had that capability as well.
I could also use the camera and media players when the battery was almost dead.
HTC seems to understand we aren't children that need to be smacked when we want to do something they don't think we should [Maybe Apple just didn't think of it though].
I remember my last samsung phone started to limit what you could do when the battery was getting low. nice to have 3rd party apps now.
So I tried the FxCamera app. It's not too bad. Any other recommended apps that get around this annoyance?

I only use FxCamera just in case I take a pic during a call. I like stock better. You can make a shortcut by long pressing homescreen, choose shortcuts, scroll down till you see FxCamera Quick Launch and choose what effect you want (I always use normal) and thats it. So when you are on a call you only one click away of taking a pic instead going in to the menu and choose what effect you want.
Hello does anybody know how do we get rid of the ugly white-grey blocks when scrolling trough webages?
I know there was a fix for the samsung galaxy s,but i cant remember.
Cheers
somebody knows?
never ever seen that you can try a factory reset wiping all data or search the forum.

Basically, you go to a webpage, something with lots of pictures, then scroll around the page quickly, and it changes to a chequer board pattern as you move it until you let go of the screen.
It only happens for me in the stock browser so i'm guessing it is something to do with that.
Don't know how to fix it though.

Yes thats the problem
I'm sure that that's what is supposed to happen as the stock browser does not load the webpage outside the current frame.
Use Dophin HD, it's free and a million times better
I bought the HTC One S and it is my first android device.
I am very confused how multitasking actually works and how to close apps. For example I am playing a game then I press the multitasking button to select the webbrowser. Well if I immediately switch back to the game again, it will resume where I left it. But if I wait a little bit longer and then switch back, it will automatically start the app from new. I lose all my progress. This happens so often and I am think this is not multitasking at all.
Also when I swipe to close an in multitasking mode, it just doesn't close the app. For example I am using navigation but then I don't need it anymore. I press the multitasking button, swipe up to close the up. And then I noticed it isn't closed at all but there is no app for it when I enter multitasking mode. I'd have to actually open the app and manually close the app from inside to actually make it quit.
Am I using android wrong or is this just it?
I believe that is the way how android works. When you switch between apps or press the home screen they will minimize and stay in the RAM memory. While in the RAM memory apps will use very litte recourse. This way you can switch between apps quickly because they don't close. Those apps don't need to start up again. If you've got some apps in RAM and you'll launch a app that needs more RAM then there is available, android will close some background apps to make room for a new app.
I hope this is clear to you?
I don't think that is the reason. I got 1gig of RAM and I barely have any apps open and yet it still starts from new after some time.
And why doesn't it close my apps when I swipe up to remove them from the list of multitasking. I am running sense 4.0, ICS 4.0.3
I don't have ics yet on my phone, though I have been reading a lot about its more effective multitasking. But one thing I know for sure: sometimes it depends on how the app you have suspended works, that is how it is written and how it is designed to behave once suspended.
It's not all related to android's multitasking. For example, I have experienced in android 2.3.7 that some games, once suspended, can be recalled even 1 hour later as if no time had last. I don't exactly know how it can work, but that's what I saw.

Yep, that's correct. That behaviour has to do with the life cycle of an Activity.
Well if this is how it works then I don't see how this can be called a pro for android. Then in my opinion ios has a much better multitasking system.
It instantly resumes where I left off and it instantly closes an app for good.
Not at all. In Ios apps (but for music and some other stuff I don't remember) once suspended aren't running any longer. Their current state is saved somehow, so that people have the illusion it is an actual multitasking, but it is not. That's not because Apple people are stupid (they're obviously as smart as at Google's) but it is a different approach which can't be compared to the one of android.
Among mobile system (but for maemo/meego and maybe webos) androids multitasking is the most similar to the one or your pc but I agree that it could be even better.
Yeah I am experiencing the same thing in my HTC EVO 3D. Here is my experiment.
An iPhone 4, and an HTC EVO 3D. I restarted both phones and opened Asphalt 7 on both. Opened the main menu screen on both phones and closed it with the home button on both iPhone and EVO. Now, opened Chrome on both phones and entered google.com. Searched blabity blabity bla and opened a new tab but didnt do anything. Then, went back to Asphalt 7 on both phones using iPhones multitasking bar (or whatever its called) and EVO 3D's recent apps list with long pressing the home button.
Result: Strangely iPhone wins as it continues where it left off, and sadly my lovely EVO 3D loses, opening the application from the begining.
Hell I tried to fail the iPhone but no, it always continues where I left off. I opened GTA3, opened Chrome, opened Asphalt 7, switched back and forth, everything continued from where I left off.
I searched this but it seems like its HTC's doing. People are having no issues with their non HTC phones about multitasking, but ONE X users are really complaining about this. Here, take a look:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1646409
http://www.androidauthority.com/htc-one-x-multitasking-problem-apps-killed-off-86498/
However, if Sense 4 users are having this issue, I really dont know why I'm having this issue with my EVO 3D as its Sense 3.6. Maybe this "aggresive memory management" is also there on Sense 3.6. I bought this phone when it came out a year ago and it was running Sense 3.0 and Android Gingerbread, I cant really be sure but I think it wasn't this aggresive back then.
Does anybody know if this issue can be overcomed by rooting the device? If so which ROMS have a feature like this?

I rooted the phone and downloaded ROM Toolbox from Google Play. Under Performance there is Auto Memory Manager. I never touched any of the settings, just set "Mild" from presets and checked Apply on Boot box. Now the "aggresive memory management" thing is gone and tried Asphalt 7, closed it, opened Chrome, checked mails, surfed about 10-15 minutes, closed chrome, text a friend, then returned to Asphalt long pressing the home button and the game starts from where I left off.
TL,DR: Rooting is a great thing if you are unsatisfied with your device and it fixes the multitasking issue with HTC.

The number (and size) of apps has nothing to do with RAM usage. I could write you a 1KB app that would use every byte of available RAM. It would be pointless, but I could do it
Games in particular will use more RAM than other apps, so will get shut down more often than other apps when not in use.
Fyi I had already fixed multitasking weeks ago and have just managed to fix it on sense 4.0 and 4.1.

I say that with a light heart. What I need is a Rom for my 74 year old dad. I pretty much need EVERYTHING gone except email and web. If there is anything else in there for him to fubar, he will. I even need the settings gone or frozen. I would prefer to make changes via ADB and lock it down. Is this possible?

try BIG Launcher or Phonotto from the play store
Jitterbug?
Why dont you just root and remove/freeze what you feel needs to be done on the stock rom and do it that way because no matter what thats what your pretty much gonna have to do anyways with any rom
Tux approves of my EVO
You could easily install an alternate launcher, like Nova for instance. You can use it to totally hide all the superfluous apps, cut the number of home screens to just one or two, and let him ease into the whole smartphone experience. Over time, as he gets used to the interface, you could add in widgets, more screens and increased functionality. And you can do of all without rooting, not that rooting is bad, just probably not necessary for his purposes. The beauty of this is that you can do this with any ROM out there, no need for any specific one.
ive had the phone for a few weeks now, i haven't done any modding to it yet its still totally bone stock.
i have 3 questions
1) For some strange reason i get a notification to choose the input method regularly ( like it wants me to choose another keyboard) but im using the htc keyboard) i tried a few of the other keyboards ive used in the past but just went back to the stock one.....what causes this?
2) just about every time i open a text box or should i say try to open a text box i get the "paste " button instead of the keyboard then i have to click in the box a few times to open the keyboard and continue to type......again what causes this?
3) is there a way to use the fingerprint scanner to unlock the phone its kinda a pain in the ass to hit the unlock or power button and then flip the phone over to swipe my finger then flip it to see if it worked sometimes requiring a new swipe.
this was really aggravating when i had it default to open the camera i figured that would be nice because i thought it would be a fast way to get to the camera when the surprise moment arises that you need to take a picture and don't want to fumble around looking through menus. needless to say i set it up to just unlock now because i quickly realized that i don't want the camera app to open every time i need to use the phone or check a message.
Combing your #1 and #2 seems to point that you might have a hardware issue or your screen protector/case is triggering this.
#3 no ways yet ... :/ that is something everyone will like!
Try clearing defaults for your keyboard under ALL apps in Application Manager or data altogether. Agree it could be a depression in your screen protector sticking in the input fields you're trying to type in or TSP hardware failure( detects/interprets your fingers location). And yes, stick with your intuition about the finger print scanner, use it for what's most practical for you. I haven't looked personally but you might try the Play store for some third-party applications that would allow some type of voice recognition to wake your phone screen keeping in mind that there will be a trade off in battery power for always on listening.

I really really really want this phone. And its getting rooted if I do get it. But if it breaks the fingerprint scanner and won't work on custom roms then I don't really want it. I know it'll prolly never work on AOSP though(or the lack thereof).
Sent from my EVO using Tapatalk
you can turn the fingerprint scanner back on after rooting if you choose to; there are instructions here on how to do it. Most folks dont bother to..
and, we have custom roms now, so not sure what you mean by that..
I seen cm11. That's the only aosp ROM here

yeah, there isn't a working AOSP here yet, but there is talk of one coming real soon...htc hasnt released source yet for some reason, and that is whats needed to get more dev going for this phone..
That's the thing I've been all HTC since the OGEvo. And they might release source in ~5 months.
On the newest HTC EVO 4G LTE we haven't got source for our latest from about 6 months ago

Being that the official KitKat release should be just around the corner, along with the current lack of custom roms available, I decided to stay stock. Using the Xposed Framework :good: , I was able to customize my stock 4.3 to the point where I'm not sure If I'll ever need (or want) to use a custom rom. Having s-off means bootloader can remain locked, allowing fingerprint scanner to work, and I'm still free to change my mind whenever I'd like!
