thanks a lot man.
er no you dont need root....
1. Download any version of CWM from here
2. Get desired rom (kernel too if you want)
3. Place everything in Externel SDcard
4. Boot into stock recovery (Power+Home+Vol up)
5. Use stock recovery to flash CWM
6. Backup Current stock rom
7. Wipe the usual
8. Flash Custom rom (Or just kernel)
9. Reboot
10. ?? Profit ??
Now you got Custom rom or Kernel + Full stock rom backup (can always get stock rom from sammobile if you lose it)

yes best way to install cognition rom (because the rom is based on XWKE7)
1) flash stock XWKE7 rom with odin
2) flash CF root for XWKE7
3) download cognition rom 1.07 and put it on /sdcard/external sd-card
4) boot with 3 keys into CWMrecovery
5) choose cognition_s2_107.zip file on sdcard and flash this wonderful rom
so i have done

Questions, if you don't mind:
I rooted ages ago and apparently a lot has changed since then..new roms/kernels and other stuff.
First, I think 1) and 2) are understandable. Get 1) from Intratech's thread, flash with Odin. Get 2) from ChainFire's thread, flash with Odin. I can do this on my existing kernel, right? I have PDA: XWKE2
- Where do I get CWMrecovery from? It's not in the Market.
- How do I boot with three keys?
Everything in this section .

Hi, I have a Galaxy S2 with stock ROM 4.0.3 and stock Recovery. I wanted to know if there is a way of flashing Custom Rom without rooting the phone or ADB. Would this method work? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1501719 I would just proceed till the step "Choose CWM.zip and wait until CWM recovery appear." Would this work? i need custom recovery so i can flash a custom ROM.
Thanks again
No you cant flash a Custom ROM from stock recovery, you need a custom recovery and root access on your phone for flashing custom roms
the method you linked is only for rooting, the recovery appearing is only a temporory one from which you can only install SU-Busybox-Installer.zip.

I didn't test it myself, but I think that it will work.
If the custom ROM is provided as Odin-flashable tar file, you don't need a CWM recovery to flash it. Just put the ROm tar file into PDA section of Odin and flash it to your phone.
Only if the custom ROM is available as CWM-flashable zip file, you need to flash a kernel containing CWM recovery first.
I prefer to flash CF-Root kernel from Chainfire with Odin. It contains CWM Manager app and CWM recovery of cause.
When you are in doubt, stick to the flashing instructions of the ROM developer - usually in the corresponding ROM thread.
P.S.:
As soon as you have CWM recovery, create a nandroid/system backup.
So you will be able to go back to your current system, if something goes wrong with the new ROM.
Good luck !
Oh cool, lemme try it

All you need to do is download cwm recovery from here http://clockworkmod.com/rommanager in your SD card and flash the Dowloaded zip from stock recovery .
Once you flash, your stock recovery will be converted to cwm recovery
After that flash any custom rom of your choice. Simple and short

Thank u for the response. But im a bit scared flash or wipe in temp touch recovery. Because a friend of mine got his s2 super bricked while trying to flash on stock 4.04 kernel. does this emcc bug affect 4.03 stock kernels as well? So can i just flash the latest Siyah Kernel using ODIN ??
Any time you root/flash a Rom theres a chance to brick your phone. What -Grift- said is the easiest and best way to flash a custom Rom in my opinion. Just make a Nandroid backup, delete data and cache, install the zip file from your SD card. I've flashed 4 Roms so far with this phone, all successfully. Currently I'm running Cyanogenmod 7 on my DINC 2. Good luck on whatever method you choose.

Go into download mode, connect your phone to your computer and use Odin to flash a custom kernel to your phone. That done, you have root and you're safe from the emmc superbug. (EDIT: although 4.0.3 doesnt have the bug, if thats what is bothering you) You can then flash a custom rom or whatever else you please. Use the TAR version of siyah v4.1.5 from www.gokhanmoral.com
Instructions on how to use Odin are available all over this site and on the web in general. Search and you'll get it.
If you don't wanna use Odin, your only other option is flashing temporary CWM. Search for rachmat3's method or use the one mentioned above. All three are equally safe provided you read up on the procedure adequately.
99.9% of the phones getting bricked is coz people jump headlong into the procedure without first bothering to educate themselves on how to go about it. They get what they deserve.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app.
If noobs on xda have taught me one thing, its that smartphones just aren't for everyone.
Or just wipe only when you have flash the rom (custom recoveries are safe e.g siyah dorimanx)
Edit: AFAIK 4.0.3 are safe the bug is with leaked 4.0.4?

Thank you for the info. I know few things about rooting and custom roms. I have flashed so moany roms with my HTC. Im new to samsung and odin. Thats why i wanted to make sure before doing anything stupid.
Thank u all for the help. I successfuly flashed Siyah kernel to get root and CWM
I'm on 9300XXUFME7 – Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean
I haven't installed any custom recovery yet.
But i want to install philz advanced cwm or ClockworkMod Recovery
I heard that philz advanced cwm is the best
I have a few questions so plz help me
1. Which Recovery is the Best ?
2. Does installing a custom Recovery void Warranty ?
3. How do i uninstall a custom Recovery and revert back to stock Recovery ?
4. Does flashing Rom's uninstall custom recovery ? (Like flashing un-root our device )
5. Does Rooting is mandatory to install a custom Recovery ?
6. Does Custom Recovery is mandatory to install Custom Rom's ?

1. Which Recovery is the Best ?
=> not allowed to ask , but select one that includes a SDS fix e.g. Philz
2. Does installing a custom Recovery void Warranty ?
=> I would guess so
3. How do i uninstall a custom Recovery and revert back to stock Recovery ?
=> flash a stock ROM, or try to find a flashable stock recovery zip
4. Does flashing Rom's uninstall custom recovery ? (Like flashing un-root our device )
=> only if flashing a stock ROM that includes the stock recovery, custom roms usually don't include one.
5. Does Rooting is mandatory to install a custom Recovery ?
=> not sure about that as you also can flash roms without root via Odn
6. Does Custom Recovery is mandatory to install Custom Rom's ?
=> not 100% sure, whereas see (5). custom recoveries nevertheless will give you more options to e.g. backup

see answers above.
Just to add to the above regarding 5 and 6.
5) You do not need root to flash a recovery. Just Odin. You can flash a recovery then flash a custom ROM directly without having to root your stock android rom.
5) Most custom ROMs are .zips for recovery. Its rare you find an Odin flashable custom ROM. Sometimes the early versions of Leaked samsung ROMs are Odin flashable and rooted but that doesn't really count.
Can anyone provide me a link to Flashable Stock recovery zip ??
So, If i flash my phone with I9300XXUFME7 – Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean Do i get my stock recovery back ?
I would recommend flashing via odin. You can get stock recovery from any stock rom or cf autoroot.

As rootSU said every stock ROM has it. If you got mobile Odin you can select the zip and just eject the recovery partition I suppose. This will enable you to just flash the recovery without Rom.

Thank You very Much.......
Hello
I'm willing to install Pound ROM (kk 4.4.2) On my Samsung Galaxy S II (intli9100)
I'm running stock JB with Stock kernel.
There are too many tutorials and they don't seem to be connected in steps. some steps are the same and for which i'm afraid that i don't want to do something twice causing a brick to my cell
I Rooted my phone through stock recovery with "CWM-SuperSU-v0.97" and did the update through google's playstore
I'm confused with both terms Clockworkmod and Kernel. i know what they stand for but i'm confused
Things i want to install:
STEP1- CWM 6.0.4.5 (KK Compatible recovery)
(i read tutorials that say it shall be installed after you install cwm6.0.2.9 through ODIN then flash 6.0.4.5 through the 6.0.2.9 you previously installed then do a recovery reboot)
After that step above, they say you shall install a KK rom instantly without rebooting. But i don't want to directly install the Rom, i want Gustavo's kernel!
STEP2-Gustavo's Kernel
STEP3-Pound ROM (it comes built-in with Gapps and pre-rooted as well) i read about it and it seems like the best KK rom so far for the i9100.
So my question is, Do i have to do (step 1) then (Step 2) or just (Step 2) through stock recovery (it allows to install zip from SD Card)? i'm confused
All i want is Gustavo's kernel + Pound ROM.
okay . so here goes : you have to be running a proper - compatible recovery to flash kitkat roms . see this - and follow as it says ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s2/general/cwm-kit-kat-compatible-t2546597 ) after you are done with that , flash the pound rom , and its compatible respective gapps ... let you phone boot up and set it self up . follow gustavo's guide and flash his kernel . since pound rom already has stweaks , you'd have to flash kernel-settings wipe and then flash the kernel ( all in recovery ) and boot up .after you have booted up , install stweaks from play store and you are good to go .
Let me sum up .. flash the correct recovery and its process ( link provided above ) and then flash the rom and gapps . let the rom boot up and settle itself . flash the kernel ( gustavo's [ be sure to follow his guide .. as you need to flash the kernel settings wipe as the pound rom also has the stwaeks app . ])
all the best and happy flashing
