Soooo i just bought a used vibrant off craigslist ($75), and i immediately wanted to update the software to ics. Checked the current firmware, was still the original 2.1!!!
So i come here to do my usual research, and quickly i realize that's its not as simple as rooting, flashing recovery and and is Rom....
With all the modems, bootloaders etc, i have no clue where to start. Im not asking for someone to link every file or anything ... But if anyone could break down the basics steps by step i would appreciate it very very much.
Thanks in advance for any help or even pointing me in the right direction.

Actually, it is rather simple to install ICS on your newly purchased Vibrant and thus it won't be long before you're enjoying the wonderful perks of Android 4.0. Simply follow this guide by Woodrube, it has everything you'll need. Step-by-step instructions and the required files.
Now the real question is, which ICS rom is the "best". In which case I'd suggest you to check out the ICZen rom found exclusively on the RootzWiki forum. Great help support and an overall great rom.

Thank you so much for your help.
After my first try with ICS, I loved it, however its not quite fully functioning enough to leave it on my wifes phone as a DD...
with that said, in your opinion, what is the most fully functioning GB rom available?? Im flashing Asgard 3.2 as we speak...
Thanks again for your input.

First, I'd like to say that I completely second noob's post. It was exactly what I would have wrote (except I would have done it way less neat and clean like lol)
But in terms of GB roms, there are quite a few good ones to suggest. Personally, I always found myself going back to 360's prime rom. It handled great, and often times gave me upwards of a day and a half on the stock battery, and 2 and a half on an extended one. Also, it's MIUI which is pretty neat, since it's entirely customizable. Anyways, if you're in the market for trying out some great GB roms, I'd certainly suggest checking out this thread at Rootz:
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/24076-roms-6miui-gb-t959-vibrant-from-360-productions-compalation/
Good luck
Thanks for the nod N00B and Xeno.
If you find that you are having trouble with some things, there are plenty of people that can help. We have all been through the ringer so to say and have found work arounds for 99.9% of the errors. I know that N00B and myself are using Zen as our daily drivers (and probably Xeno too).
Some like Slim others like Passion and Euphoria but above all, I must forwarn you to look at the big grey warning in my ICS guide about the possibility of the Encryption Error. It is something that you'll need to decide if ICS is worth it or not.
If you decide that you want to put your wife on a stable 2.2 ROM, Fishman has a few nice Mods and Moped_Ryder just put out a stellar 2.2 that is fast, stable and EVERYTHING works (including GPS).

Well in terms of GB roms, I've only tried Miui. Before ICS became available to the Vibrant, Miui was my daily driver. Some of its key features is that it is very customizable, gave good battery life, and had a gorgeous UI.
If you need help installing it, check out my Miui installation guide. You can find a link here, stickied in the Q&A section, or below in my signature. PM me if you need any help or tips to get the most out of Miui (I know all the tricks to get Miui to run like a beast. So feel free to ask).

Ive ran MIUI on a couple different devices in the past (htc mytouch 4g, G2X), and while I have some friends who love it...it just wasnt for me. So I eventually landed on Biffmod which has seemed very stable, the best mods from CM7, and the gps works. One thing... between voodoo and DSP manager, after playing with the settings on here the sound is easily better than my SII... it sounds amazing in my Kicker headphones
Thanks again for all the help, dont think Ill end up giving this to wifey....may just keep it as a backup/mp3 player after hearing how clean the audio was
Hi
As this is the Q and A section of the X10 forums I thought this would fit right in!
Since I last installed FeraLab v.20 Final I've more or less cured myself from the flash-fever I had earlier. As a direct consequence of that, my visits to these forums has been quite sporadic to say the least. And now, when I return I find that the camera development for ICS based roms has taken a huge leap forward!
Now 6mpix seem to be functioning as expected and the full 8mpix is more or less fixed, apart from issues with rendering (huge over generalization). Video also seem to be more or less on a highway to becoming fully functional!
Questions:
How did this come about?
Who did what?
Was Sony themselves involved?
How much is left before we have fully functioning camera/video/hotspot features under ICS in our X10?
Might JellyBean even be possible as a direct result of this development?
The questions are many, but these are really interesting times!
+1 on those. We'll wait patiently, hope all the best effort from XDA developers. I don't think any SONY involvement on this kink of custom development, but our support by Donate would be great beneficial..
Cheers

I can answer few question
Sony was not involved in it.
Zdzihu was the one who started it giving giving wvga camera working firstly. Here's the post . http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=28818020&postcount=1028
he came out of nowhere and posted that lol He always does that and has done in past and hopefully will do in future p
Then championswimmer tried to compile camera and after few tries he was able to get 6 mp camera working.( I guess zdzihu's camera fix helped him)
No one knows how much time will it take for complete working of cm9.( FXP is involved in cm9 so hopefully they will be able to do it)
As for JB AFAIK FXP isnt going to develop cm10 for X10 but someone else might
I guess your doubts have been cleared

Depends of the guys, i really appreciate the work of developers, but in 1 month, i see like 4 or 5 updates, with annoying updates like, NEW KEYBOARD, CHANGED BUILD.PROP and others, but nothing with NEW KERNEL, if possible get 3 or 4 developers to do 1 thing!! Or Stable kernel only in 2014 :/

A few questions:
There are not many devs left here. Do you think it is a good idea criticize our work like that?
Are you saying you don't want any updates unless it is a new kernel?
Have you considered trying to build a kernel yourself instead of complaining?
Just asking.....
I heard that the devs working on porting the XOOM kernel have progressed. Hopefully in due time...
It will, it's under development.

Im not criticating man, i really appreciate your work, you win my 10+ repp i only said that these updates dont be affect anything that the guys test. Because, i see much guys from here, and from other forums, that trying ICS several weeks because it have a new update, did you understand? hehe
Dont think wrong about my answr ;P
What exactly is the point of threads like this? People around here are getting just too good at nothing but whining and complaining. FYI, opening a thread like this is exactly the same thing as asking for ETAs, and I really hope everyone knows you NEVER ask for ETAs here. Instead of littering the forum with useless whiny adn wallowy threads like this, you could have helped the development efforts yourself. But no, people would rather just sit around idly and complain and whihe.
If you want a stable and fully functional ICS/JB right away, get a different device. If you want it in some undefined time, have patience, be supportive and QUIT ASKING. Better yet, instead of just waiting, take initiative and MAKE IT HAPPEN YOURSELF.
Hey Guys, I've reported this thread. I've got fed up with threads like these. Only asking for ETAs, growing up a bad mood... not throwing good vibes at all. We need patience, not ETAs. If you need a kernel so bad, then you've gotta have patience. That'll do the trick

wow, you've reported this thread?! all the guy was asking was how things are progressing. After the initial excitement of the ics leak there hasn't been anything of very much. He said he appreciated the work of the people who put the time and effort into trying to keep our phone as current as possible. Who do you think you are Ravilov labeling someone as whiny and wallowing (although just what you think the poster is wallowing in is beyond me - he asked a simple question). As for your pathetic 'no one asks for eta's' comment... I can only assume you've been spending too much time here.
Thankfully, the question was answered bu Syl and takemeouttt.
This is a forum, where people ask questions and, hopefully, get civil and informative answers.
1) New Keyboard -- Because people wanted to try the new keyboard with 'Swype'-like features.
2) build.prop edits -- Because different people are having different issues with the ICS roms. Devs are pretty much taking stabs in the dark to see which combination helps which device. (tegra part?)
3) Xoom Kernel Port -- Is compiled, but will be a while before everyone can test it and/or have a stable release (source: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1941654)
As for your original question, there's a strong possibility we might, but don't expect it anytime soon. If it was that easy, Motorola would have done it at the same time they did it for Xoom. Remember, developers might also upgrade to newer devices. Would seem pointless to develop for a device--that even the manufacturer abandoned, when you have a shiny new device.
The current "team" of developers ARE working "together". In my experience, it's hard to collaborate on something with another person remotely, but they seem to be managing it. Going by the thread, there are at least 2 active developers. Might be others who aren't updating in the thread, but are simply contributing by email and/or other ways?
This thread may or may not be pointless. I think if it gets closed at this point, it might help someone trying to find a simple answer without going through 1000's of posts in the development section.

I think that the community is simply misguided.
There is not a single post which clearly explains that we hit a brick wall regarding battery life.
Not knowing that, it IS frustrating to see a "new update!!" as the title of the ROM post and find only minor graphical changes inside.
There is a simple way to solve that, we need a sticky with an explanation regarding the entire Atrix ICS issue.
It should have a brief explanation that the ICS and JB roms that we have now are incomplete and generally suffer from graphical issues due to the old kernel constrains and even though we have a leaked version of the original ICS kernel, it is only barely functional and in most cases far from being a daily driver.
It will save a LOT of browsing (for me at least) since I check almost daily on the progress in the development section and it is quite a hassle to browse through all the latest comments for a clue of any changes or new ideas of how to make the rom work better and it will inform all those that don't bother checking and simply end up disappointed in the new changes.
Creating such a post is easy and I can do so if you'll approve of my idea, but the major point is to make it sticky and up to date, even if the update is simply updating the title just to show that no progress regarding kernel development/ ICS implementation for the Atrix was made.
I have no problems updating it either.
I adore the dev community here and all of you guys.
It's nice to see optimism where other developers and testers would just give up.
I love you guys and keep up the nice job. :highfive:

I think epinter tried taking the kernel from either the galaxy r and other similar phones and came out with the same issues as we get with the leaked kernel.

Does anyone know whats the most stable ICS/JB rom here? Need one with good battery life, & hwaccell...
Hi everyone, my questions here may seem strange or noobish, but I'll ask them anyways,
I follow these forums (XDA), since a good time now, (since I have my Xperia X1, got it nov 2008 to be exact, but I discovered XDA a little while later), and I read lots and lots of threads and posts everyday, I was there when CWM was born, I flashed tons of ROMs on my X1, WM6.1, WM6.5, Android since 2.1 I think, I had stopped all this for some times when I had much work to do for school and work etc. and I came back 3months ago with XPERIA P...
I followed and read almost every thread in here, and I'm sorry to announce that I find all this a bit Messy (not Lionel)...
I want the best Experience for my smartphone, and here I'll explain what's the "best" experience for me, and I wish you could tell me what's the best thing to do for it.
1) I love Xperia Stock UI, that's why I want stock XPERIAnce
2) I love smoothness, thats why I want a light ROM and good Kernel =)
3) I know that .54 FW is insanly buggy, so I'll certainly need some tweaks
so now that you've read my little story, I think I have all your attention so I can ask my questions, that's why I'll type them below:
1) What's the best ROM for me?
- I think about getting this one (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2069543) I want to know what you think about it, seems really good to me, but don't want to waste time flashing and reflashing, I used to do it with my old phone so now I just want to flash once and stay with My phone like it is all the time
2) What's the point of getting another than stock Kernel?
- I mean here that okay it can be smoother and have better battery or benchmarks, but tbh I don't really care of that all unless there's a big difference, so is it a real difference between stock kernel and Sliding or Thjap?
Yeah I know my question seem noobish and may have been asked many times, but I'm searching for someone who can make my wishes come true, or at least show me the way to do it by myself, because actually I learn computer science but all this is not what we learn at school, so I don't knwo where to start...
Now For all of you that didn't fall asleep while reading my story (could write a book lol it's so long) hit the thanks button (just to know if you reached the end of my post LOL, joke no need to do it)
Seriously for every person that reaches the end of my post, just feell free to help or teach me how to make my own ROMs, because yea there are tutorials and stuff, but it's always better to have someone showing you the first steps, it helps you keep focusing on it and not being bored,
I thank every guy here that can help me or just took the time to read my looong long post =)

1.) Only you can tell what's the best ROM for your phone. But for my Xperia P, I use BrainsROM. It has all the features I need for my smartphone. Battery does not drain that fast and overall performance is good.
2.) Hmmm. I am not that pro yet when it comes to kernels, but as I can see, there is a big difference using kernels from Sliding and Thjap from stock. You can see big improvements when it comes to overall performance. Most people use Stock ROM's combined with Modded Kernels.
Sorry for my bad english, english isn't my first language. :good: Hit the thanks button if my post helped you.
Your question regarding kernel
The kernels provided by thjap and deepunknown are more than just another stock kernel
pre rooted
Cwm integrated
Init.d support
Ooverclocked ( removed from deepunknown's kernel)
Some performance n battery tweaks
And a hell lot of new things
So Are there any cons over custom roms and kernels, like freeezes or reboots or phones stuck? Did you ever experience that ?

I have never experienced any reboots or freeZes on all custom roms that I have tried ( talking about those for unlocked bootloaders)
Most of the roms dun have any lag like our beloved stock rom
Regarding kernels - if its a test release... U cannot expect it to b highly stable...
Bt final releases are stable ( coz they r thoroughly tested by some testers including me
all credits to developers
Some have made it to 6 stable releases in xperia p section )
And you tell me that custom stable kernel is smoother and has better battery life than stock ? How come Sony engineers didn't make it better so ?

Yes it is bt I didnt said anything about battery yet
When I used miui it was superb
Bt battery life was not as much as I expected ( less than stock rom)
Sony engineers - no words for them
Coz they can port jb to xj bt not to xu and xsola... Thats pathetic engineering
hello
i need rom haven't lagg and nice battery life
thanks
1. go to the ROMs section,
2. look at the threads, read commentary,
3. flash what looks like best idea, test it.
4. if ROM is good, stay on it; if not, go back to 1
5. stop creating unecessary topics.
6. Success.
No, really, asking questions like this is so frustrating. I moved from device which had like 3 AOSP ROMs, it was such a limited choice and people still asked which one is better instead of testng and finding what works best for them. Gorramnit. Don't be lazy, what's good for me or someone else maybe isn't good for you.

We don't have time to waste to read each post and thinking about what is better in some rom than other roms...

I would recommend RR OS

Now back to english: Noone can tell you what's good for you, except yourself. I like barebone, nearly AOSP stuff, with constant updates and improvement and official support, which means it's with zero hastle, so anything except Lineage is a no-go in my case. Somebody else likes themes, bells and whistles, so that person would recommend something different. That's why comment sections are there - you can see how ROM is performing, possible bugs, what to take care of, and, more important - ROM features. You don't have to read all, use search and/or check last 10 pages for bugs, and you're good to go. Or even search for this same theme, I think this is 3rd or 4th thread with same question.
Yes, not everyone have the same taste
Try cosmic ROM. Been using it as a daily driver since a month. Good battery life and smooth ROM. Camera isn't any different. Its same as any camera app found in other ROMs.
RR is the best
