Why does my phone always slow down over time? - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Every time I flash a new ROM, the phone is super fast and responsive at first. Then over time, it starts to slow down and have weird lag even after I reboot it. I only install a handful of apps on the phone too. Anyone experience this too?

Yes, phone does slow down over time due to new apps which introduce
extra background processes to fetch and update like mail, calendar, ..... As well as more data the phone has to load , example: Messaging app is slower because of the amount of messages.

Are you using Hellybean or any other CM10 based ROM? It's recommended to wipe cache and fix permissions when it starts to slow down. This should fix the problem.

Thanks, that worked. Does that only happen for CM10 roms?

Do you know the reason?

Run v6 supercharger with scriptmanager ^^
You can find v6 here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=991276&highlight=vacuum+&+reindex
If you are REALLY curious why the lag happens however, you can find your answer here: http://www.rt-embedded.com/blog/archives/linux-memory-consumption/

Super Clean D101 Fc Errors

just wanted to report, I just installed the rom and did a wipe data and cache, everything went fine, restored my apps using titanium backup, but I got the fc force close as soon as I started the phone to sign in to my google account, when I signed to twitter, I got the fcs, I went to rom manager and did the fix permissions, rebooted but it keeps doing the fcs, I will give it some time to see, but it does not appear to affect anything, I just press force close and everyting goes well, I did a full benchmark, and it gives me 800, before I was at 2000 with the lag fix, I dont know if I want to keep this rom with the bloatware remove but sacrifice the speed and be bugged with the force close issue, I think I will wait for a more stable rom.
Did you clear the dilvak cache?

boot into cwm recovery.. under advanced...
with that said... WTF is it? lol. ive been having some fc issues myself... running the clean 0.1 and get fc's during navigaton and from time to time.. seems like when its syncing.
EDIT: Also, dont rely too much on those quadrant scores.. there has been some debate as to the validity of those scores.
look at those scores closer, the only difference is the I/O speed which atm isn't showing a major speed difference unless you have like ten apps open. the cpu speeds and stuff are all the same, plus all the fcs are already being talked about in the roms thread
Sent from my Clockwork Fascinate using XDA App
I was having force closes as well, but not anymore, I've heard if you wipe format, clear cache, clear davlik, do all that three times... Then once rom installed, install it again immediately after reboot you should have a solid install ... I don't know the science behind it, but my rom has been running pretty solid with no fcs.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using Tapatalk
i did clean the delvick cache, and it still does the fcs
i applied the zip from this thread..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=793479
and its behaving... though i was really only having problems after running my navi for more than 30min... guess ill see in the next hour or so if it cleared that up...
on the plus side.. i got my puzzle slide lock screen back... yeah i got some "garbage" back too... but i think maybe we need some of it to remain stable
I turned my calendar sync off and all is well.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
Yeah I was going to say. Disable the calendar synch featurea for Google, Facebook, Exchange, and anything else you might have under accounts and you'll be fine. It FCs because the calendar app is being accessed but it isn't there.
I just went back to using Google Calendar online. That's what I did with my Eris cuz the stock calendar sucked so much. The Samsung calendar app was perfect. I can live without it though.

ok i will try that and report back
yes, it is fixed, i disabled the sync feature an d no more issues, thankz, im happy now

[Q] SGS2 with CM9 Freezes suddenly. ROM problem?

I periodically find my phone in a frozen state/shut down (at least once a day or during the night)
I have the latest nightly CM9. I'm wondering if the freezes are caused by the ROM or i have some hardware problem or an rouge app or something.
Is there a way to see a log history of all processes so i could pin down what's happening just before a freeze? is there a better way to do this?
Thanks all

The biggest problem in cm9 is when you set your voltages/cpu too low, this can cause your device to lock up when turning it on again/opening lockscreen. Another problem which is usually the case is that you have a misbehaving app. The easiest way to counter these little niggles I have found is to do a complete wipe, format your sd card, format system etc, then attach sgs2 to pc via usb, mount your sd card and transfer cm9rom.zip to sd card. Only then flash your cm9 to your sd card in recovery after unmounting and disconnecting from pc of course. This lets you kind of narrow down the problem as you will know that you do not have any files/folders/apps from a previous rom install that are causing issues. I always do this when installing a rom, even if it is just a nightly update, since I used to get problems like yours, I do this now and have 98% less issues. But what I think you have most likely done is to underclock your device too greatly. Also, if you are using cpu profiles, make sure you are not setting screen off profile too low, otherwise it will most certainly freeze on open. Anyways, cover these bases and you should be golden. It is not a rom problem.

S3 REALLY slow

I have just bought an S3 and I am actually quite disappointed in it's performance.
I have an S2 (Running stock ICS) and my S3 (Running stock JB) is quite noticeably slower, with terrible lag.
I am just wondering if this is normal, surely this should out perform an S2?
The 2 main area where it is considerably slower is opening up my contacts and MMS app.
From clicking the contacts icon it takes about 2 seconds to actually load the contacts, and the MMS app takes about the same time to load.
Also when opening my app drawer it is buggy and laggy when scrolling through.
I notice that I also have little to no free RAM, yes I know how android works and how it utilises RAM but it doesn't seem right to me.
Anyone else having this problem?
I'm also running JB which should be smoother than ICS!
The firmware version I'm using is XXDLJ4
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
you are either doing something wrong or holding a faulty handset, apart from the delay in opening contacts app after heavy usage, s3 will absolutely smoke s2.

Thanks for such a prompt reply!!
It totally smokes my S2 in benchmark tests but in real usage it doesn't.
Is there any way of checking if it's faulty?
Like maybe an app that checks all 4 cores are running properly and GPU is functioning properly?

try disabling media service, its one among the reasons for possible lag, disable power saving mode if enabled
turn off Facebook sync and ripple effect

Im shocked. How is this possible?? I bought my phone 10days ago, till now I have not seen any lag anywhere except for the contacts and phone. It will be fixed though. Moreover it fly's with the JB update, I love scrolling through the screens its damn smooth.
I doubt if you got the correct handset . Surely something is wrong. Was it like this from the first day???

The screen scrolling is fine, it's nice and smooth. It's the opening up of contacts, phone and MMS that is really slow.
I've got the latest UK JB update so it should be a lot snappier, in my opinion.
And it's definitely a S3, no doubt there. Yup it was slow right from the get go.
It's the crazy high RAM use that is annoying the hell out of me
Oh, Then go to developer options and select background process limit to 4.That should help, but if you are freaking out about the RAM, then don't cause that's how android uses the ram.
I am currently Using Liquid smooth ROM (AOSP) . I have no contacts or phone lag. Use it if you like AOSP
Use an ASOP or miui Rom! JB onS3 is good but Sammy needs to improve.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
yes your s3 should blow your s2 away and NO you shouldn't have to tweak or remove apps, live wallpaper etc.
First try a factory reset...best and simplest advice for performance issues.
Then, and only then should you need to try to find out what apps or settings are causing problems (to be honest no settings should retard performance that badly).
Then...and its a longer shot is a faulty rom installation which a reset won't fix. In that case you'll need to reflash DLJ4 from a reliable source, here on XDA, samfirmware, checkfus etc.
If still problems then your issues are hardware related and you need to visit your provider who'll have access to a maintenance centre, or even samsung themselves...assuming you're still running stock. If not you need to use a guide to restore your phone status to unmodified and a flash a stock rom first.
Good luck

you are not alone.......http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1958171 ....and this is really annoying
Mine is REALLY fast. More responsive than ics for sure.
Full wipe, stock and..
That's it
Also loading a list with 50 or 100 contacts and some having photos can not be immediate unless its already in the cache..
Definetly do a factory reset, usually fixes most of your problems.
If its being all sluggish i would suggest running "Paranoid Android [ROM]" on it, which is amazing. Or if your looking for something lightweight go, "SuperNexus".
Either way, also go to " settings > dev options " and then change all the Animation Scale (From 1x) to 0.5x it will make the animations faster.
Your phone is not faulty.
The stock contacts and sms app made by samsung are too heavy and indeed open very slow. You should try exDialer or jelly bean sms app which can be found on Play store.

What he said. Samsung have done something with the contacts, phone and mms app which take 2-3 seconds to load. Stupid. I think this is only on JB though, hopefully they fix it soon.

I only notice slowness with power saving mode enabled. Make sure its not and it should. I would use roms as close to stock as possible, IMO. Flashing and using aosp amd miui like others have stated will probably cause more niggly bits of annoyance then rectify current issues youd only replace them with new ones. Unless of course you have a rom addiction and flash every second day like me

No problems here, but have changed a lot.
Disabled S Voice, froze all Samsung applications. Same with services like remote controls, tracking etc. Deleted bin/kiesexe since I never use KIES and the extra ram is handy to have (ROM cooks, here is an idea, ask users if they want KIES on install, if not delete it)!.
Install a good kernel and try running a SQL optimization script to speed up databases. Lastly don't touch supercharger etc to get more free ram (that is wasted ram). It'll slow down Contracts and the Dialer since it removes them from ram. They are loaded at startup for a reason.
Also lastly, turn off unneeded Startups
You should be able to find a list of unneeded services and tasks, somewhere on the forum
You'll understand why, when you look at the list of unneeded bloatware, services etc running, why it is slow. shame on Samsung.
Swyped on GT-I9300 - XXDLJ4 - Siyah kernel 1.7b1 - JKay framework -
try wiping the cache partition in recovery mode. worked for me

Almost the same behaviour with different ROMs: I'm not able to keep my Sola continuously on for more than 2-3 days because after a while it becomes unstable.
Force Closes happen mainly with Opera Mini and then with other apps until the phone freezes or reboot itself.
Up to now the more stable and fast ROM for my Sola is FXP CM (from 210 to 212), but also in this case no more than 3 days before a reboot.
I'm a bit frustrated because I'm not able to find out the solution: I'm considering also to move to stock Gingerbread hoping that my Sola will work better.
For our Sola, I have read suggestions to reboot the phone once a day and probably it could be a "solution", but I don't agree: I remember that my old HTC Wildfire was able to work stable for weeks of quite intensive use without any reboot.

I have already tried with 1, 2 and 3 without any good result.
I don't understand why the phone works very good for almost one day and then start having some force closes and bad behaviour: for a low RAM problem, I expect issues also at the beginning.
Furthermore, when my Sola starts having force closes, the situation becomes worst and worst without any possibility of recovering: at the end, I have to reboot if the phone is too unstable or freezes otherwise it reboots itself.

CM10.1 Keeps crashing Samsung S3

Hello.
I have CM10.1 installed and I update often but I still have my crashes happening. For some reason whenever I use instagram, facebook and other apps have the the camera function, my phone reboots. This doesn't happen when i use the regular camera.
Anyone had this problem?
Did u make clean wipe before flash rom? Or mega wipe something like that. Imo factory reset doesn't make ur phone clean enough for flashing rom. Try formatting system before flash rom.

Yes and it's annoying as hell! I've had CM 10.1.2 stable on for quite awhile now and yes I'd wiped it 3x, dalvik, etc but out of the blue one day, the Gallery app had my camera photos in a folder and when I clicked on a image to display from there, the screen went black and it rebooted. It's gone from bad to worse. Now it crashes when I even scroll through the gallery pics. So much for "stable". This is a considerable bug IMO.
Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions??
Sds?
Suggest you change kernel (also suggest if you do the LATEST siyah one. most stable one so far).
Suggest you change rom: aosp not so good for s3: unstable and high battery drainage.
Also cyanogen known for being unstable on s3.
suggest foxhound rom if flash.
