Hi Guys - great phone which I've had a week or so now. Upgraded from the first Galaxy S.
Now I must admit to having very good eyesight (sometimes wish I couldn't see finer details!) and..
On white / grey images (download the various screen test apps to have a look for yourself)
The screen, when on a low brightness, is "muddy" and demonstrates a few vertical darker lines on the screen with mine showing quite a prominent one in the bottom right heading up about half way up the screen.
This is mostly visible when the brightness is at a minimum (regardless of auto or the powersaving options)
When the brightness is turned up it is barely visible, if at all... looks fantastic..
But.. at this point I preferred the screen on the Galaxy S which, when dimmed was more vibrant and didn't have this "problem"
Hands up who can see what I see? Any darker lines visible on your white / grey backgrounds? a side effect of this new subpixel arrangement? totally normal? some pixels not as bright in a row hence darker lines?
What do you guys think?
Cheers, B
W
Could you take a pic or something?
ASAP yes (no camera ironically so will have to ask a colleague!)
hold menu and press power button for screenshot off the device.
Yeah, mine set to minimum brightness and has some line artifacts like when LCD supplied with low voltage. (low brightness setting)
Easily noticeable when displaying grey colors.
I'm also using Screen Filter app, setting brightness even lower, some black points around 0.3cm is exposed at night.
Not sure those points are affected by anti-scratch film though.
Hola
I can confirm that I see the same "line banding" effect when using the device with low brightness. Like others have mentioned I also use the free Screen Filter app to get even lower brightness levels especially when reading stuff in bed in the near dark.
I would think this is a side issue with having the Super AMOLED Plus type screen but I guess only a Samsung tech can confirm.

65" long exposure exposing some black spots.(digitally enhanced)
Lowest brightness + Highest brightness.
Wondering those spots are caused by screen protector or defective screen or limitation of current AMOLED's.
You can see there is some current leak.(It should be bezel-like black if it is ideally off)

Not sure I understand you cpu98!
Is there a consensus we all have this "problem" - i'm on the verge of taking it back for a refund and "monitoring things"
Anyone understand the tech / spoken to Samsung?
B
Not sure what those black spots are... is your camera messed up? There's spots on the right even off the phone...
Also yes, pure black for SAMOLED still produces SOME light, but it's almost indistinguishable to the human eye.
Take a picture of a dark grey image on low brightness and it should show the bands the best...

That spot off the phone is on the wall not defective cam. As you can see photos are taken at different angle. And it is visible in naked eye.
Yeah I like its screen very much. That black issues are no problem in real use.
I'm very satisfied.
Does anyone know if there is a way to adjust the display's color saturation and color balance? While the screen is eye popping to look at, the colors are not accurate. They are distinctly warm and oversaturated. This is great for looking at icons, but not so great for photographs. I know the international Galaxy S II has something called "background effect" where this can be set to 3 presets with varying saturation levels. But this option is missing on the AT&T SGS2. I found an app called Screen Adjuster in the market, but that only lets you increase saturation or change color balance by increasing the intensity of the Red, Green, or Blue values. There's no way to turn them down.
So has anyone figured out a way to adjust this? Thanks.
bump. also hoping to find a solution for this but not having any luck yet
+1 on this.. I am a professional photographer and I used to use my I4 to present my portfolio. As of today I can't do that, or I have to do re-do my portfolio specifically for the SGS2's display. Which I really don't wanna do.
"app called Screen Adjuster in the market"
Thanks for this! At least with that the color temp is somewhat fixable, but overall colors are still terrible. As long as Samsung insists on locking these devices into torch mode we're just screwed. It's a shame that this didn't ship with several selectable profiles like the regular version (although I never seen it so dunno how good that implementation is.)
Working on hardware calibrated monitors all day and then looking at this phone is a bit jarring.

I totally agree! My wife's iphone 4 looks way better with photographs. To me, photos on this phone look cartoonish.
LOL cartoonish

This would be great. Caartoonish is exactly what it it. However, we need to keep in mind these displays are far from professional grade. I won't argue that some software could help bring a small level of 'professionalism', however.
I just read around the web that the international version of this phone has Settings, Display, Background Effects to calibrate?
------------------------------
Well I checked out Screen Adjuster and it has the ability to change R,G,B values along with the brightness and Contrast ... so that's enough to for me to use me Eye-One Pro to calibrate the screen. I just need to put grayscale and R,G,B targets to the phone.
This should work just fine
can you post your settings when you calibrate it?
I also found this
Calibration Hack for Nexus One
Which I am now using. Since it has the grayscale bar built in. But this one requires Root access as you need to put the apk in to the /system/app.

Great find! Do you know if CM7 is a requirement for this? This may be the best option for color correcting the display.
I just realized that with Screen Adjuster, you can change the color balance by adjusting the relative values of RGB, then turn the Brightness down to compensate for the elevated brightness levels. Without turning down the Brightness, the black pixels are no longer black. So it's a pretty decent solution.
Just got Screen Adjuster, are there any recommendations for "optimal settings?"

I'll look into this - I'm surprised you find yours too warm, I think my phone is a little on the cool side - without a doubt bluer than my Infuse.
If it's supported by the I9100, I can probably find the relevant kernel interface.

Problem is... just like calibrating a TV/Monitor is that it doesn't have High Bias and Low Bias R,G,B. High Bias changes the whites and Low bias changes the black.
Also, unless you plan on using your display at a constant brightness level, you will get color shift in the lower end of the spectrum
For what I have done is create an 18% gray jpg and a 82% gray as well as a 50% gray.
ON MY display the whites is on the warm side... but there is nothing one can do about it, because the apps just don't have those value to change
ON MY display the blacks are also very warm...
I WAS able to use my i1Pro (spectrophotometer, unlike the cheap colormeter) to get it pretty damn close to 6500k in the Black and Mid-tone.... again nothing one can do in the whites.
I am 90% happy with the results (I'm anal, but I can't do anything with the whites!)
My settings might get you close to 6500k (most likely not.. because ever display is different, and from what I see here some are too warm/cold..etc).. My settings are to use with Calibration from the Nexus One thread, and they are set up to have a warm mid-tone
Red: 627, Green: 623, Blue: 665
Mind you that I also am using CM's 7.1 with the brightness custom level set to my likings...
But it's night and day difference (if you are looking for realistic color representation). A lot of untrained eyes like the eye popping colors, while a calibrated display is much more subdued.

I keep getting a force close after I install the apk. What version did you use? The app installs fine and will open but when I try to adjust RGB, I get the forced close. Thank you!
I've been noticing a few interesting things with my Galaxy S2 and wanted to know if these things would be something to be concerned off.
1). With faith, I finally updated the firmware to 2.3.5. Now, the yellow tint is gone. However, the areas circled in the pictures attached continue to show the same washed-out effect. Instead of the usual blue color in the Notification Area, the areas circled, show a much pale tone. This becomes very visible in grey backgrounds (i.e. accessing Marketplace and Notifications Area) and low brightness in Browser. I don't know if this is a defect in the display or software related like the Yellow-tint.
2). After updating the firmware, the kernel version has Intratech's username at the end? Is this suppose be like that? I thought the Kernel, would be the same as before as stock. The phone confirms this is a official Samsung Firmware, so i'm guessing I have not rooted yet.
3). At lowest brightness, in complete darkness, if you squint and look very carefully in Notifications Area, you can see a faint vertical line across the Notifications Area-only. Doesn't affect anything else though.
4). If you look carefully at the Notifications Area, 2/3 of the screen is darker, while the right is fairly 1/3 is brighter as indicated by the arrow in the picture attached. Is this a way to compensate for the yellow-tinge on the left?
5). The auto-rotation feature doesn't always work whenever display toggles between verticle and horizontal position. Is this something all users face?
6). Lastly, I'm not getting any close to 4,000 on Quadrant Standard even with virtually nothing running in the background. My scores are only ranging between 3000 and 3500 in Quadrant Standard, is my hardware defective? I never had a situation where temps crossed 40 degrees Celsius. My device is normally maintained at 29 degrees Celsius and on average, 31 degrees Celsius. I feel like the CPU is constantly clocking at various speeds.
Please leave your feedback. Thanks a lot.

For me, nothing dramatic recognizable.
1).
Your pictures do not show me any problems or defects.
But this is subjective and maybe you can see more differences when looking directly on your phone's display.
2).
I can not see Intratech's name in your kernel, but this is nothing to bother as it is still recognized as original / stock kernel.
I also think that your phone is not rooted. But you should know, if you flashed a rooted kernel or used another rooting method (like flashing an insecure kernel, using SuperOneClick ans re-flashing a stock kernel).
3). + 4).
The notification area can be used for adjusting the brightness of the screen (click on the bar at the top ans hold your finger there for a second, then move it to the right to increase or to the left to decrease the brightness) - maybe that's why you can see different areas in the notification bar?!
5).
Auto-rotation is not available in every screen and/or app. It should work in your browser, in email app, in video player, etc..
6).
The benchmark scores depend on many different factors. I have flashed a lot of ROMs and kernels (most of the time official and/or stock ones), and I usually get 3000 - 4000 in Quadrant.
For example, the economy mode reduces the speed of the CPU to get a better battery life. Please be sure to disable such performance "stopper" before running a benchmark.
If you want to reach higher scores, you should look for a custom ROM which is "specialized" for high performance.
Original/stock ROMs usually try to enhance battery life and are not focused on a maximum performance.
Thing is when you look at the area outlined in black, the the color is not equal as to the rest of the screen. Instead, the areas outlined in black appear more pale. This doesn't even affect the overall picture quality, but it is sure visible in lower brightness and in situations like accessing marketplace and notifications area and web browser.
Another thing I noticed is that with medium brightness, you begin to spot a faint horizontal line in a plain white background on the top (it doesn't flicker or go on and off, it's just there). if you put the brightness at full level, that line doesn't even exist, is it software?
and when you set the brightness to lowest, a strange faint blank vertical line appears when you see in pure darkness but only in a confined area of the notifications area. is this amoled-related?
when rotating the screen while in notifications area, I can see faint lines that appear on the sides of the screen; looks to be like ghosting. i've seen other S2's and those lines seem to be permanently fixed regardless of what way you orient the phone. instead of those lines that are permanently fixed, mine just magically disappears, but it takes seconds for it to blend with the current position. hope you know what I mean.
please let me know
thanks again
Hard to tell by the pictures, but if you believe the screen to have a fault, then return it under warranty.
or could it be I'm making it a big deal out of the ordinary? lol
I sense a small variation in the tone in that area of the display (right triangle), before removing the yellow tint by upgrading to 2.3.5, this area used to distract me a lot. is this usual in SAMOLED+ displays?
perhaps, I've uploaded a much clearer photo now. if you look on the bottom left and top right you will see what i mean. is this normal or is something wrong. is this usual with SAMOLED? please let me know, thank you
here are the areas highlighted, please check and let me know, thank you
i have a cross shaped formed in the upper right of my screen tho my phone is a nexus s.its still amoled.i noticed it when having a gray background in a dark room.also when i pull out the keyboard for 5 to 10 seconds then pull down the notification bar while the keyboard is still there i can clearly see image retention of the keyboard in the notification tray.i also see this in market when searching for an app and it loads i can see the retention of the keyboard in the grey background.f
Ok, so I have my brightness all the way up, and I am still having trouble seeing my screen, and yes, it's bright out, but I don't have it in the direct sun light. I know that my iPhone had no problem with screen being brighter outside. I have the auto brightness disabled. Now, when I bought the phone they put a glass protector on it which is clear, and I also have it in the Otter Box case as well. Could this reduce the brightness? Lastly, if the phone is what it is, then is there an app that will make the display brighter? Thank you so much.

use brighter backgrounds, they will eat up battery a little bit quicker but the brighter colors will actually make the screen brighter. using a black background will cause the screen to produce less overall brightness.
Wow, never gave that a thought. Thank you so much, I appreciate the information. I am off to find a brighter background.

If I remember correctly, the screen can get brighter with the auto brightness turned on. Can't remember where I read that, but the thinking was that super bright mode may damage the screen if it's on that way all the time.
Don't forget, Iphone has LCD, we have Amoled, which one of the drawbacks is, it sucks in the sun.

It is called CABC (Content Adaptive Backlight Control).

I am not sure how Lux behaves with this feature though.
Check out this picture. My HTC M8 is on the left. New S6 on right. Both turned up to full brightness. My M8 screen looks so much more vivid and colorful. Anybody else seen this issue?
Have you checked your gs6's display settings? I'm curious if this is a hardware issue on your device or if it's just one of the other profiles - make sure it's set to "adaptive".

check to make sure auto brightness did not turn off. For some reason many people, including myself, have seen the auto brightness become automatically unchecked and brightness lowered.
I too came from the M8. I have yet to decide which screen I like more. I love AMOLED blacks and colors, but the screen seems so dim (especially if you've been looking at any other screen) and the whites seem yellow.
Full brightness on recent Samsung flagships is achieved on auto brightness in full sunlight, not in the dark. If you did this outdoors at noon you'd have a different result.
Make sure auto brightness is off and adaptive display is on
I took this picture inside. Auto brightness was off. Adaptive on. No power saving mode on. I can't stand auto brightness on phones. I usually keep my screens around 85-90%. Both S6s are going back and I'm going with the M9 or Nexus 6. Way too many issues with these phones.

You must have a bad unit or power saving mode going crazy or something. I have the M8 and M9 and the edge screen is night and day brighter. Like not even in the same league brighter and more vibrant. It makes the M9 look dull and lifeless.
Yeah mine is a bad unit too. It's going back tomorrow. I've played with the power saving and all display modes. No go.

So I grabbed a flashlight and turned on auto bright. I put the flashlight over the sensor and the screen got extremely bright. Way more than having the manual setting at it's highest level. Maybe they'll update the software so we can turn the screen up to where we want it.

I can't use Samsung's "auto" mode for brightness. Always too dim for me. I have been using Lux Auto Brightness (paid version although there is a free version you can try) for a long time and I find it does a much better job than any "auto" mode from manufacturers. I think they make it as dim as possible to help with battery stats. But it is pointless if my battery lasts twice as long and I can't see the screen LOL
Thanks. I'll try that.

Yep, just look at this image:
I really hope there's a hack that gets max brightness without auto brightness. I stay in a dark environment so it always keeps it on the lowest brightness, waaaaay too low, especially compared to my computer. I want the max brightness (I know, I know, bad for eyes, whatever), I mean, that's what the slider should do...

try lux auto brightness. You can set your values to what you want in each environment and time of day. Love it for fine tuning how my auto brightness works. The only issue with the edge is the screen does not blur when you swipe out your contacts from the edge. Hopefully they will fix that soon.
