Hey all,
Just got a Rezound as a replacement for my Droid Charge. This is my first HTC phone since the Touch Pro 2. I was a regular visitor to the DC forums and tried every custom rom and hack you could find there. Coming to the Rezound and reading about the root methods and custom roms seems a bit daunting compared to the method for Samsung phones. I would really like to just start with Stock Rooted and was hoping that this all in one tool will help me achieve that: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1504824 Can someone confirm this for me. Also, do I need to have the supersu apk on my sdcard or will that tool provide it as well?
Also, will using CWM be okay (purely out of familiarity) once I start tinkering with custom roms and the such? Seems like there is another recovery more popular here.
Any video on someone flashing a custom rom on this phone from start to finish? That would help a lot.
So far I am loving this phone. HD screen is awesome, camera quality took a shot compared to my DC but I don't really care. Much needed boost in processor power finally allows me to play games I previously purchased but didn't have a strong enough phone to play.
I am looking forward to getting to learn more about this phone and participate in future discussions. Soon as I get a custom rom (maybe this weekend) up I will be in full force! Thanks for all of your help in advance.
When it comes to recoveries just use amon ra. Seems like to me there is a lot less problems with it. The all in one toolkit is awesome. It is were I started. Just read the tutorial that is with the all in one. That's all I did. I came from a droid.charge so I know the.difference between the two. I would recommend s off though. Not as scary as it sounds. And it frees your device. So much more u can do such as putting global capabilities to use.
Also a link for all in one soff tool kit. Makes flashing so much easier.

I may request your help as you will understand my point of reference. Yeah I am working up the nerve to S-Off soon. When I saw that wire I got a bit worried. I exclaimed "REALLY?!" when I saw the procedure. My wife thought something wrong happened. Cool, well I will read up on that and figure out which Kernel Rom combo I want. Is it similar to the DC where a rom will come with the kernel in a recovery flash package? I should figure it all soon enough. Just need to get the elections out of my hair.

Yes, if you are S-off, the kernel will usually flash along with the Rom. Just read the Dev's OP before flashing any Rom as they will indicate if you need to fastboot flash the boot.img or if they have a PH98IMG.zip to flash separately. Honestly though, I am considering resetting my security flag back to S-On and manually flashing kernels any way to prevent the risk of bricking the phone. Haven't decided yet.
As for the s-off method, don't even sweat it. just make sure you watch the video and do exactly what it does by touching the correct points with the wire and you'll get it. Not really that hard, might just have to try a few times.
So, welcome!! :highfive:

I wouldn't even worry about going S-OFF. It just makes the flashing process a little bit longer.

Welcome to the Rezound...I think I remember you from the Charge forums.
It looks like everyone else has taken good care of you..I just want to be another voice saying that CWM is the worst possible option for recovery on this phone. Also, I'm surprised about your camera comments. I was never able to make a good picture with the Charge no matter how hard I tried, but I can get good pics out of the Rez without any effort at all.

Good to see you here Shrike, I recognize your avatar and know that you have provided me with many helpful comments. Seeing you hear makes me feel better.
Had some more time with the camera and I formally retract my previous statement(s) about the camera. It handles indoor lighting and low lighting wayyyyy better than my charge. The charge gave nice pictures only in a well lit (sunlight) scene. What I like best is that it compensates pretty well for the flash. Things would look flushed out on shutter and appear clear in the image, vs the charge where the flash on close subjects just made white blobs.
Thanks for the warm reception everyone.

Check out my TWRP thread in the dev. If you don't want to S-OFF. It shows a great way to flash ROMs/Kernels inside of recovery while being S-ON. It's called HTC Dumlock. The official CWM sucks! Don't use it. If you use CWM use the version found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1914215

You are correct. But you can unlock the bootloader and then lock it back up. So its like this:
Root and Unlock Bootloader
Install CWM
Install one of the only two ROMS we currently have
re-lock bootloader
Install bootstrap recovery
install updates to whichever ROM you want through bootstrap
Enjoy custom ROM with locked bootloader and 4g love
It is really just an extra step until we get the kernel source code. This is an absolute great phone and we have great people in this forum to help you out. There are quite a few guides on how to do all of this, if you want to PM me I can help you one on one get it done if need be. Other than that, hope to see you around these parts

I don't know, I find it pretty easy to do, and I'm not very good at adb stuff. I believe there is a one click root tool also and it only takes like 3 minutes to unlock the bootloader.
So I think the whole thing is pretty easy myself. Up to you really.

One thing I want to ask.
This is what is keeping me from even rooting. how do I unroot? In case I return this phone?

I had an ogEvo as well and new to the whole bootstrap but most of this stuff just sounds complex. Really isn't a huge deal once you get your feet wet. I had the same reservations when getting the ogEVO but over time ended up doing about everything to it. Never borked it once.

Yea, it really isn't that bad, a bootstrap is more harmless than a real recovery actually. Its just like installing an app from the market really.
And on the borking the android phones. I think this is extremely hard to do because I had an OgEvo and I don't think I could have bricked that if I tried. I think Android is some of the most user friendliest software out there in my opinion. I even thought I bricked my Photon the other day, but I didn't, you always just find out it's user error 99% of the time!
At least for me it is. lol
As for the root/unlock process with the photon, I think it is very easy once you run through it a couple times. I may make a video so people aren't so scared to try it out.

thinkin about whipping up a rom myself. nothing too fancy, just something simple with a few minor adjustments. i'm not going to get too involved in it this early on as i'm sure there will be an assload of OTA's.... and since people have to re-lock to flash radios now.... bleh
also... regarding the device itself, pretty pleased with performance... i can't really imagine what this thing is going to be like once overclocked kernels, hacked kernels, etc etc.... wuddafuuugg

I am pretty sure we can flash radios through custom recovery. Htcdev unlocks the entire phone. The only downfall is the watermarked bootloader.

Do you mean will it always have a watermark, as of now yes. When you relock the bootloader it shows relocked at the top. The awesome devs here might be able to fix that in the future. This will void parts of your HTC warranty but who uses ever uses that.

I've been Away for About 4 Months...and it looks like a lot has changed. Such as S-off is becoming more feasible...though I haven't tried it. And there is a new recovery (EXT4) that I have tried on Google Play and I like it so far a lot.
But now I am wanting to go from Gingerbread up to Ice Cream Sandwich, and I haven't got a clue where to start. I have found out that it is more than a simple update zip on your SD card.
So where should I start. I have bought Ext4 and installed it. It completely got replaced my Clockwork Mod recovery...just a question can we get Clockwork Mod back if we want it??
I have tried 2 different ICS roms and they both led to reboot loops, so I must be doing something wrong. I haven't S offed my phone because I'm a little scared of it still...read about loosing important things when you try it.
So any help is greatly appreciated to get me leading in the right direction
Thanks for the help

You need to restore to stock GB via the stock ruu or if you're on tmo you can jump straight to ICS by relocking your bootloader and loading the latest zip file via hboot, by placing it on your sd card and renaming it PH85IMG, need more info to provide further help.

I find this to be true as well. When I got my Amaze, I first read everything I could find on how to get it unlocked and rooted. THEN I did it.
Coming from an HD2, I found this device to be a bit harder to get a hold of when doing the unlock and root process. I'm not sure why, but I was confused until I read to the end of a number of threads, and even then I was nervous doing the actual unlock / root.
Totally agree. The hd2 was unique though because it started from absolute scratch. From loading from sd through winmo, then dual boot, then mag...It was built from the ground up and I felt like I was learning everything along with the devs. I felt like I really had a good grasp with that phone but this one made me feel lost again...Felt good when the wire trick worked first try though!

!!!READ ME FIRST!!!
Let's get many things out of the way:
1. I am not a ROM developer. I'm decent at coding, but ROM making is a first for me. I followed THIS Guide.
2. I have not tested this. It probably won't boot. I doubt it does. I literally just followed the steps from the guide above. I used flex360's Stock with goodies and TEAM SONIC's FreeGS3 ROMs to port. They're both awesome.
3. If this ROM bricks your phone, causes it to catch on fire, burning down your apartment complex and/or causes Skynet to take over the world: Don't blame me. I don't have time to test this. I need to get to bed. Seriously lol. I will test it tomorrow, but this is just a base. I doubt this will even flash...
If you didn't read the above:
THIS PROBABLY DOES NOT WORK. IT IS JUST WHAT I'VE DONE SO FAR. I DON'T REALLY KNOW WHAT I'M DOING. USE AT YOUR OWN PERIL. RISK OF BRICKED PHONE FOREVER AHEAD!
UPDATE: CONFIRMED FLASHES WITH NEW VERSION! DOES NOT BOOT STUCK AT HTC SCREEN!
Okay, so now that we have that out of the way...
GSIII Port. This should, in theory have Touchwiz and all the glorious elements of it. I don't believe that it will work, but here it is for anyone to use, modify, share, etc. I have no source or anything from this, as this is an extremely basic and early port. This is a pre-pre-pre alpha at best.
NOW FLASHES! STUCK AT HTC SCREEN. IT IS A START. THIS IS STILL ONLY FOR DEVS. IF YOU WANT TO HELP, PM ME. I WILL LEAVE THIS UP FOR DEVS ONLY!!!
DOWNLOAD [CURIOUS DEVS/LUNATICS ONLY!!!!]:
!!!DANGER!!!
TouchEvoUX pre-pre-pre alpha v -1. Yes, version -1. 617MB. Confirmed will flash. Going to try and get to boot screen then I'll re-upload it tonight. Wish me luck, lol.
!!!DANGER!!!
I STRONGLY ADVISE AGAINST FLASHING! THIS SHOULD BE FOR CURIOUS DEVS ONLY!!!!
If you want to help (and maybe have an idea about how to go about this), PM me lol. I know this OP is pretty ugly right now, and so is this "ROM" (I think it is best called a "Franken-ROM") but that is how it will be until this thing is confirmed to at LEAST boot. Hell, if it even flashes without causing your device to catch on fire or explode, I think we can start organizing.

It would probably be better if you just replaced all the HTC widgets and launcher etc. with Samsung's stuff, and leave everything else as is, but this is an honest to goodness port. Come on, which is more fun (which is safe?).

Nice man! You may want to purchase a casket, plot and flowers for it right now. The odds of it working are some where between 0 and 0%.
Seriously though, I just followed the guide, so in THEORY this should work, in practice, it is highly unlikely. But, if someone who knows what they're doing wants to take a shot at getting this thing to boot, then here it is lol.
Yes, you cannot blame me if this causes zombie apocalypse, this entire thread was warning you that this will probably not work. THIS WILL PROBABLY NOT WORK! I won't have time to test until tonight (my schedule for today is insane), but if this thing ACTUALLY flashes without making your device explode, I think you're lying.

So, at least it is confirmed not working. Boot image it is. I think it is the bootpath or something to that effect. Anyway, I'll make a note of it in the OP and try and fix it tonight. I'll leave it up for devs to look at.
EDIT: Fixed. Successfully flashes, now just stuck at the htc quietly brilliant screen. I guess it's a start...! Uploading new version that flashes now , will do more tonight.
OP...the Development forums are not to be used for experiments. Do not post anything in the Evo LTE Development section until you yourself have confirmed that it's working. Even though you put disclaimers, we're not going to risk people bricking or doing serious damage to their phones just so they can do what you're not doing and that's testing your port thoroughly.
It's ok for everything not to work as planned but the rom should still be working without the danger you're describing in your OP.
I'm closing this thread for now. If you have a functional, non-hazardous build to put out, then let me or one of the other moderators know and one of us can reopen the thread. But in the meantime, keep working on this.
So im coming from a nexus. Its a good phone and all but I figure I'd try HTC for once. I got it for $99 on Amazon. Abby way what's the statue on root or a boot loader unlock. Also what's the difference in the a nexus is vs the dna. Also is there anything I should know or do when I receive my new device. Thanks for the help

The DNA is an awesome phone; however, if your phone comes with the newest update from HTC on it, be aware, there is currently software-based (free) method to unlock bootloader or modify the phone at all. Users with updated phones that were not previously unlocked have had to resort to JTAG service (something like $45 plus shipping) to have the phone S-OFF'ed (Radio S-OFF - Means you can flash whatever you please (even more so with the engineering bootloader flashed)).
If the phone prompts you for an update, DON'T DO IT! If the phone is already updated, you either wait and hope for someone to find a vulnerability, pay for JTAG service, or use the phone stock (still a good phone, but no root).
Good luck!

Root/Bootloader status:
firmware 1.x - fully blown open
firmware 2.x - locked tighter that a dolphin's butthole.
It will probably come with the 2.x software. I would recommend using the JTAG service provided here:
http://mobiletechvideos.mybigcommerce.com/htc-droid-dna-dlx-jtag-s-off-modification-service/
Difference between a nexus and the dna... A world.
The gnex was made to open from the beginning. Running one fastboot command opened the entire floodgate, plus odin is an awesome tool for samsung devices. HTC devices have more parts that need to be cracked to have the same openess as the nexus. Right now 2.x firmware means you are running stock only (no root or anything). I'm coming from the gnex and was willing to pay for the jtag service because although I love the dev's work on this phone, I don't want to rely on them for everything.
Hope this helps.
Alright now what about things like supercid or HTC dev. Also if we can unlock the boot loader then why is s-off important. Or can we not unlock the boot loader on 2.xx

Read the threads.
No HTCdev, no unlock of bootloader of any kind currently.
Oh okay so I read that wrong. So we can't even downgrade to a previous version or that requires root and an unlocked bootloader. Also if my device is on 2.x no root goodness for me huh?

No. You are stuck stock just like I am until someone figures it out. If they figure it out. Or you could pay the 45.00 for the JTAG s-off.

Women can justify buying the same damn shoes and clothes in different shades of the same color, getsing jtagged should not be questioned.
And then oddly enough they complain when they see another in the same dress. Exclaiming how she stole her idea. Not even thinking she just might have the same taste in clothes but oh no that "B**** better get out that dress 'cause I wore it first"

You said what most of us think when we ponder a purchase that has to be approved by the gatekeeper/wife.
haha no comments on the women stuff i think you understand why hahaha
Like other post, i would say know that you will not have root for a bit and cm 10.1 is not done yet...but will be soon. You can go for JTAG or stick with stock or use nova launcher temporarily. The battery life is pretty decent but nothing crazy 4 hours of screen time-ish on stock. i usually get enough battery for 1 day and a few hours. Oh, fastboot will prevent a full restart of your phone so might want to disable that...and yea just look around settings. there are ways to increase battery and stuff. for example, there is a settings in wifi that allows it to auto turn off and use data unless you start using your phone. I think its a great device even through its a bit big for my taste, and i don't like stock much. Hope you enjoy your phone! I can't wait to get root and cm 10.1 on my phone. ^_^

I don't know what it is with me but I'm honestly tired of using CM and AOSP for awhile. I've been enjoying Viper so that I can still get a breath of fresh air from Sense... even though most don't appreciate Sense. Honestly wish I could put a Sense variant on my N7 too just to change it up.

BAD DOG! *rubs your nose in it*
Yeah I know what you vanilla gets bland for awhile. I can't get past two hours screen time on my nexus. And that's with the extended battery. At least sense is adding sprinkles and chocolate syrup to vanilla. Anyways what about face palm or whatever. Anyway my device will be here Monday thinks for the info I've only had Motorola and Samsung phones so HTC is a breath of fresh air

Same here. I love CM and AOSP/AOKP, but I tire of them pretty quick. I honestly don't understand the HTC Sense hate some people have. If it was that bad then everyone wouldn't be trying to find widgets that looked like the sense widgets on CM/AOSP. Sense is a really nice looking UI and their widgets are second to none.
I'm pretty much decided on sending out my DNA to be JTAG'd. How long can I expect to be without a phone? I think i'll be stuck using my rezound with just google voice.
