[Q] Galaxy Player 4.2 or 5? - Samsung Galaxy Player 4.0, 5.0

I don't know weather to get the 4.2 or 5. I want the 5 but its way too big

personal preference . i like the 5.0.

4.2 has omap processor while the 5.0 has exynos, which is slightly better even at the same clock rate. 4.2 has 2mp camera while the 5.0 has 3.2 or 5 in korean version. 5.0 has much better devving and rom choice and it also does fit in your pocket!
Sent from my YP-G70 using xda app-developers app

5.0has flash wich can also be a flashlight and yes has more to offer for devving.big screen easy to watch movies.specs are out there

The only thing 4.2 has over 5.0 is the blutooth handsfree profile, it can be used as a bt hf with tablets and phones, which means if you are listening to your music and your phone rings, you can answer the call through 4.2, this can be very convenient, however this feature doesn't work with all phones. Oh, you can call people to, it can dial numbers which are in your contacts. If you don't care about this, then it's a no brainer - 5.0 all the way - bigger battery, bigger screen, better for serfing inet...

I take it with me everywhere, never annoying imho if you get used to the bulk, its easy to run around with it in your pocket. its a little hard to take it out of your pocket while sitting down because it gets caught. But it never fell out because of its size so its good if you go on a plane. If comfort and portability has higher priority than screen size, cm9 and custom roms then I guess 4.2 can serve better.

I have no experience with the 4.2 but I have the 5.0 and absolutely love it. I had an iPod before and it was certainly a shock to see how much bigger the 5.0 was but it only took me a day to get over it because that 5 inch screen more than makes up for it. I can't imagine how I used to look at a tiny 3.5 inch screen and didn't think it was too small. It fits in all of my jeans and jacket pockets without being overly bulky.

lol, yeah it's funny how you get used to bigger screens, i had a similar experience, after using my gp 5.0 for a couple of days my phone's 3.8" screen seemed strangely small.

I know you are asking opinion on the 5.0 and the 4.2, but if you worry about the size but you still want the better performance and developpement on your device you can get the 4.0. It is exactly the same as the 5.0 but smaller. So you get the same performance and there is more developpement going than for the 4.2. Again this is just my opinion but I personnaly prefer the 4.0.

Well at least in my country ( Lithuania ) the 4.0 has been replaced with the more expensive 4.2. And you cant buy the 4.0 anymore.

My suggestion is 5.0 ..i love this device..i have 4.0 inch android phone and when i am out i always use SGP ..i use phone just for phone and text..i dont now how much is in litvania but i bought mine new a year ago for 150 euros which is steal for me consider that at that time devices with that big screen costed 4 times more.

I'd say get the 5.0. Its easy to get used to the large size and its still a very capable device. There's a lot of development for it and its pretty good for watching movies and playing games. I'm not sure about pricing where you live, but in the UK the nexus 7 and 5.0 are nearly the same price so you might want to consider the nexus 7, but for a smaller device, the 5.0 is great

If music playing is your thing, then I would recommend the 4.0 or 4.2 as those have the wolfson dacs. The 5.0 is yamaha. I believe the wolfson dac yields higher quality audio than the yamaha. YMMV

Do not forget the battery!
I own the 5.0 and it has a 2500 mAh Battery, 4.2 has 1500 mAh and 4.0 has 1200 mAh.
This is a big advantage for the 5.0 which can last longer.

Ok so I know I said that the 5.0 is a better option, but Amazon (at least Amazon UK) will start selling the 4.2 for only £70 (~$112) from 8:45pm GMT. Considering the RRP is something like £150, this is a really good deal so it might be better to get the 4.2 if you just want a cheap portable media player

I don't know the prices in your countries but here in Italy the 5.0 has a nice one: I bought it 3 months ago for €139 (~£112) but now I can find it for €129 (~£104) and i think is gonna be even more cheaper by year end.
Even if i could find the 4.2 for ~90€ I still would choose the 5.0.

[Q] Thinling of getting galaxy s2

Hi I am thinking of getting the gs2 to replace my lg g2x which is a kick ass phone but I am bored with it so I want something new. I was going to get the s1 but right before I changed phones the g2x came out and the specs were great. I dont regret it but I still want a Samsung. I just have a few questions first.
Overall how do you guys like your phone? A 5 year old can hack and root the g2x is this phone the same? If not how hard is it to root? What are the chances that this phone will get ICS? And how long do you think you will have to wait? And finally would it be better to wait for the galaxy nexus to come out? Is the galaxy nexus really going to be that much better than this phone? Also have any of you heard if the galaxy nexus is going to be available for TMO. I asked a rep today who said she did not know. But we all know asking the customer service over the phone is like asking my grandfather who hardly knows what a phone is. Any help you guys can be is greatly appreciated. Thanks alot
Charlie
Well it's a definite update from G2X. But if I were you I'd wait a little bit more and get the Nexus Prime. You are already 5 months late to get a GSII, now when you've waited this long why not few more days.
The SGS2 is a great phone and I don't think the galaxy nexus is going to be much better. BUT, I personally would go with the galaxy nexus since it bring the android experience ( I mean no touchwiz) and ICS. Anyway rooting SGS2 is a piece of cake, as is flashing ROMs and stuff so you could easily get CM7 running and get rid of the touchwiz interface.
So the galaxy nexus is coming to tmobile? If it is I am definitly going with it. Like I said a rep over the phone said thy did not know yet. But this close to launch I would tink they would know but thats just my opinion. Thats the other thing I wanted to ask about touchwiz. Is it ok or does it suck. The g2x is vannilla android and thats the way I perfer it. I actually dont really use cm7 not saying it sucks but I didnt even install cm 7 until the recent final relese of 7.1 came out. However I love Eagles blolod based off CM 7 that is by far the best most stable rom I have used to date. Anyway thanks for all your help guys.
How hard is the Galaxy S2 to root? Super easy.
How are the chances for it to get ICS? 100%
How long will it take? Hard to tell, as it depends on when google releases the sources. (Samsung release will have TouchWiz)
Is TouchWiz bad or good? It's not that bad, but I find both, MIUI and CyanogenMod, better. But that is just my opinion.
Is it better to wait for the Galaxy Nexus? Well I had the chance to give away my Galaxy S2 and get a Galaxy Nexus once it comes out, but I didn't. I must admit that the screen is damn impressive, but no micro-SD-slot is an absolute no-go for me.
Will the Galaxy Nexus be much better than the Galaxy S2? Define better. For watching movies? Yes. For playing games? I highly doubt that, as it got a weaker GPU and has a much higher resolution. Both factors have a negative impact on the performance. However, keep in mind that the Galaxy Nexus will set the standard for this "generation" of Android phones, so it doesn't really matter which one you get. Both are amazing.
I hope this helps you with your decision.

wow I must have missed that no microsd card slot? I have not had a phone that didnt have one for over 10 years at this point. No SD card slot what? How much on board storage does it have Afew gigs? I mean I have a 16 gig in now and it is almost maxed out and easily could be I have to cut down on what I carry. I need 32 gigs I guess that they are pushing their google music cloud storage and google docs and such. Oh well thanks for the heads up.
As far as I know there are two versions. One with 16 and one with 32 gigabytes. For me 16 aren't enough and 32 too expensive. Besides that, I don't know if I might need even more in future. Therefore lacking the possibility to upgrade if it becomes necessary is a no-go for me. The screen is the only real argument that speaks for the Nexus. I can wait for ICS...
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
Yes it has no sd card slot. I believe it comes in 16/32gb, can't remember. Well if you really want an HD screen you could wait till the sgs 2 HD LTE comes out for south korea and have it shipped down here. If not, the sgs 2 is all good.
Personally I don't even like the nexus prime, well the pricing at least. They want us to pay $300+ for a HD screen? Wow... Plus if the GPU it uses is a sgx 540 then that's an even more of a downgrade like the 8mp-5mp camera.

That's bulls**t. The megapixels only tell you about the maximal size of the images, NOT about their actual quality. Why do people still think that more megapixels mean that the camera is better?

Because it was used that way by advertisers just like having high cpu frequencies is right now. Why'd you think the s2 got pumped to 1.2 just before launch. But still you are right.
But on the matter, I have a s2 and it is an amazing phone. I don't think you will regret it if you'd bought it. But personally I'd go for the gn but it is mostly based on looks. Although I have never seen one.
ICS will take some time but if you want it as soon as possible the nexus is the way to go. And no TW. It works and it has some cool features but 75% of it is useless to me.

Well, learning by doing is how I learned what I can today (besides of school). Right now I want to start with developing for Android, but I hate Java and monoDroid is too expensive for someone who only wants to develop apps for personal use.

I am aware that megapixels mean do not give the actual performance. However in the case of mobile phones and chips, it is highly unlikely samsung will produce or place a 5mp camera better than the 8mp camera found on the sgs 2. This is a mobile camera sensor, there is only so much you can do with it. Aside from lens, etc.

You forget that there might be some "new technology" that improves the camera. Besides that, the integration of the camera into the OS is also very important and ICS should give the Galaxy Nexus a fair advantage in that point. At least until the Galaxy S2 gets ICS.

Getting Galaxy Player

Might be getting the player for christmas, what should i expect out of this? Just like a phone but without phone function? Im so excited when i get it!!! (Will have to wait till christmas morning of course) thats to far though!!!
I don't think you should buy it since Samsung has no plan in the future to upgrade the Player to Android 4.0. Moreover, the development community for this device is pretty small.
So, my advice is "Don't buy"
All I care about is voodoo sound
Dont listen...not byying this wonderful mp3 player just because its not getting ics is a stupid reason. Android is by far the best os on the market...even the stock 2.3.5 is great and does a lot more than any other mp3 player out there. I got it for my dad for xmas and he can now get rid of his gps and toshiba thrive and ipod 2g...this player is awesome. Its big though, not thin but it has a huge 5in screen. Honestly for the price of 250$ its worth every penny. android 4.0 is a nice os but its mostly phone and tablet oriented. Again, the lack of ics is not a goot reason to discard this great littlle device. It has a gps front and back camera with flash....i love it

I have the 4 inch, and it has the same exact specs as the 5 inch. Plus the screen resolution looks better because of the smaller display. So basically it all comes down to your personal preference in size.
Why would anyone want ICS? I hear all kinds of issues with it... does it add more functions? I'm very happy with my 5.0. I wouldn't care if it had Froyo (I like my Optimus-V just as well except for it's small screem). Don't ICS's melt in the sun?

It does not have the same exact specs, there are other subtle differences between them apart from the screen and battery. It's not the same chipset. That said, it's pretty much the same thing in daily use apart from the battery life and size considerations.
The main differences I see (aside from screen and battery size) are that the 4" has a removable battery but the 5" has an LED flash. I lean to the removable battery myself but it is nice to use your phone as a flashlight in a pinch!

Should I buy?

Hey guys
I own a nexus running jb. Its a perfect device- simply the best money can buy. Project butter really works wonders and Google now is game changing! Dev community is incredible, one post asking for help and twelve pages of support add up in less than an hour
Because of the stock, simple and no nonsense-no bloat ware approach of the nexus + speed charge (phone charges to 100% in about an hour) I plan to use it as a work phone.
Im now looking for a personal device.
This is what I am looking for in the device:
1. Excellent display - very high priority
2. Sexy to look and hold
3. Must have awesome cam and great audio quality
4. Amazing standby life
5. Smooth os
6. Active Dev support and aosp ROM abundance
7. Less bloatware
8. Ease of living - no necessary requirements set by manufacturer to install apps on PC just to copy files etc.
9. As close to android originality as possible
Do you think xperia s can cut it?
Or should I be waiting for another device?
With what I can see ROM development isn't really much... but u need to tell me the real picture.
*pushes back the chair and sits attentively. *

I bought an Xperia S, sent it back for a replacement. Then I bought a Galaxy Nexus because it dropped to 350. I just purchased another Xperia S today and am sending the Nexus back. Samsung is garbage and not worth it even for Jellybean. Also the addition of the onboard hdmi port is great.
Let's hope I feel the same way. I Dont like the slow dev... brilliant phone otherwise, it cannot replace my nexus but will be a good sidekick...

The Nexus is a good phone but it certainly doesn't have better specs. The hardware is worse, less memory on GSM version, and the screen is terrible compared to S, no hdmi output only mhl, shoddy Samsung construction, worse battery life. Only advantage it has is android releases. I recently bought a Galaxy Nexus but I sent it back because Samsung has terrible build quality and the S has enough better pieces to justify the price.
I am comparing it to the Xperia S by the way.
The Xperia S does have worse dev, but any phone is gonna have worse dev compared to Google's own phones. Still Xperia S has very good stock software so the need for a ton of Roms and such is not as bad. I was on the fence as to either get a Galaxy Nexus or an Xperia S and I went with the S.

I would have to disagree. The nexus still holds the most advanced screen tech there is. It has 320ppi screen which is just 20 short of my xperia and everything about the nexus screen seems better than the s. richer colors, sharper pictures and greater contrasts. Even the anti aliasing is better on the amoled. The s till now I've found has comparatively faded colours disappointing blacks...
The ram is the same as an s2 and a xperia s but in the 6 months I've owned it NOT EVEN ONCE has it gotten hung or run sluggishly. I have decided to skip the s3 altogether because at all given times jellybean seems to have over 50% of my ram free...
Battery life I get currently is 1d 18h on normal - heavy usage, but that's got a lot to do with your choice of radio since this is a world phone.
Build quality: it feels really sturdy and I've dropped it a number of times but couldn't get even a scratch on the paint...!
Infact I feel like I should have just bought another nexus... but xperia isn't bad too... just my experience. It might be an old phone but it still is kickass! Waiting for aosp ROMs on the xperia - I hope they'll be fun

Well everyone has the right to have their own opinion so I'm not gonna say that whatever you're saying is wrong but IMO having compared the screens of Galaxy SII, Galaxy Nexus, Note and S3 with the Xperia S, I can safely say that the Xperia S has a significantly superior screen to all of those devices.

Lol 5.8 inches? Now that's an odd size for the screen. It's like they are trying to make it a Galaxy Note Successor. They should really keep it in the mp3 player range since the new iPod touch is on the way and this would make a great competitor to it. Also I don't know why they decide to make it 5.8 inches the PPI is going be only 189 (Same as the GP 5.0 now) 1280 X 720 (PPI of 253) or 1024 * 768 (PPI of 221 same as GP 4.2 although the problem with this res is it isn't in 16:9 -___-) If they made it 4-5in they can keep that resolution and it would still look great.
Great, finally some specs, I have been waiting for more info about this upcoming device.. but 5.8” screen?? WTF? Isn’t it a bit too large? Isn’t it getting a bit too far into unpocketable tablet range? I mean GP 5.0 was just pocketable, but an almost 6” device in my mind would defeat the purpose of a media device you could carry with you in you jeans and getting too close to the 7” range of tablets. Nonetheless, I hope Samsung hasn’t forgotten about bt handsfree profile this time (the way they did with GP 5.0) and implemented it in the new player. IF the price is right, I will get it. I also think that in order to compete with the new iPod that Apple will be announcing soon (if the gossips are right) which might have an 640 x 1136 (that’s a weird resolution) screen, Samsung should have gone with a higher res screen, though lower res screens are easier on battery. BTW, do you guys think the new 2-core processor would consume the battery much quicker? One of the things I really liked about the GP 5.0 was its battery life.
Ouch a 5.8 inch screen is pretty darn big for a PMP. Is there any chance the actual size is 4.8 inches (same size as S III)? Also the res is exactly 16:9, just worked it out now. The player 5 is slightly off 16:9 so it might make watching movies a bit easier

I don't think they realize that is bigger than a Playstation Vita lol, but the Vita from the specs has a better CPU and GPU lol.
If the prise is the same like 5.0 (cost me 160 euros) i may actualy bought one.In my country there is no nexus 7 sold...problem with this new player i thing is that is too long if this specs are corect..thah is 25 mm more then 5.0.

Higher resolution screen would cost much more and drain more battery..i dont have a problem with
resolution on 5.0..that is stilll better resolution then 99.9% of 10.1 tablets which all have 1280*780 on 4 times bigger screen.

Actually the tablet screen is either 1280 X 800 or 1280 X 720 lol. Sure the GP 5.0 does have a sharper display, with a PPI of 187 PPI, compared to a 10.1 in tablet with a res of 1280 X 720 145 PPI or 1280 X800 with a PPI of 149 you have to realize that you hold tablets much further from your face.
I think Samsung over did t with the screen size lol if they want to compete in the MP3 world they need to make it competitive with the iPod touch.
I don't think it will be 5.8, it would be damn too huge. I'd say between 4.5'' and 5.0'' and I hope they sell this cheap, because if it's higher than $200, it's better to buy a nexus 7 LOL.
its an odd size but i definitely looks worthy of my money

I guess they will probably have all sizes like now..now you have 4 different sizes. It looks veru similar like galaxy S3 ..5.0 looks almost the same like samsung note.

5.8 is just too big
Some people say it's only 4.8"
Knowing Samsung it may well be 5.8 inch. They have 3.6 (player and galaxy ace?) inch devices, 4 inch (player, sgs1), 4.2 inch (player), 4.3 inch (s2?), 4.65 inch (GNex), 4.8 inch (s3), 5 inch (player), 5.3 inch, (note), 5.5 inch (note 2?), 7 inch and 10.1 inch (tabs). All they are missing is ~6 inches so they might see it as a way of plugging a niche market.

Lol, that's really niche isn't it? Imagine, someone walks into a store and asks a shop assistant - 'dude, i want something slightly larger than 5.5" but not quite as big as 6"! And Samsung wants him to reply - "we have just the thing for you!" LOL
oh yes, and you forgot 7.7"..

I reckon Samsung's financial model is to flood the market with devices of every size so there is something for everyone. Oops Samsung just have too many screen sizes to remember them all
Nah, their strategy is if they have hundreds of different devices, Apple can't ban them all!: P

I'm not gonna buy another samsung device ever... They release a thousand of devices and after they just update a couple... **** Samsung!

I see your point although it is hard to support many different devices. I'm currently considering never buying a non-nexus device again

I am also getting a little fed up with Samsung; they never update, they put their own stupid bt stack in instead of android's (result is no wiimote), and they fill the system with touchwiz junk. Now if Google could just sell a nexus pmp!

[Q] Think I might buy a used 4.0, 4.2 or 5.0

I think I might buy a used Galaxy Player 4.0, 4.2 or 5.0.
I have been looking through the development threads and it looks like the 4.0 and 5.0 have some good very functional ROMS, the 4.2 not so much.
I am a little concerned the 5.0 might be too big for my needs - mostly stick in pocket and listen to audio.
What do you guys that own these devices and have been around here for a while recommend?
I would definitely go for the Galaxy Player 5. It has a flash on the camera, plus it fits decently in most of my pockets and very good battery life.
the only downside to the 5.0 is that it lacks a proximity/light sensor
If you are going to use it for audio than the 4.0 is better for that because it's dac is much better than the one found in the 5.0. However, I'd wait just a bit because Samsung may upgrade these players finally to the galaxy player II series

Thanks. Now I remember reading a while back that the 4.0 has the Wolfson DAC and the 5.0 has the (Not as good) Yamaha DAC.
I had not realized they were coming out with a Galaxy Player 2 series. Although, I still think I will pull the trigger on one of these as I can get a "like new" used or refurb for around $120 to $130. (My present DAP, Cowon Z2 is really annoying me )
I was leaning towards the 4.0. then I was leaning towards the 5.0. I think I am back to getting the 4.0, lol. I will make a decision tonight or in the morning so I can have it in a couple of days ... and Root and Flash!

You can also switch batteries. Anyway, I'd go for the 5.0.
I heard of that one and decided to get the 4.0 lol

Thanks to everyone who responded - I really appreciate your input!
I ended up ordering the 4.0. It was a difficult decision, I kept eying the 5.0 right up until I pressed the "Buy Now" button, LOL.
I went with the 4.0 mainly because :
Easy and cheap to replace Battery or have a spare. (I feel this is very important especially when buying a used or Refurb player.)
Wolfson DAC (This will be used almost exclusive to listen to Audio (Music, and also podcasts, audiobooks) and most of my previous players had the Wolfson DAC so I am used to the Sound signature)
Smaller size. (This will be used mostly with headphones connected and be in my pocket while I work or perform various activities.)
Light sensor is a plus. Also the camera is unimportant because I always have my phone on me and I usually have my Canon P&S Camera nearby.
I will be replacing my phone sometime this year and it will be 5" or close to it.
Thank you all again for your input!
I was looking through the available ROMS, Looking at the CM 10.1 ROM and the Paranoid Android ROM.
Does anyone recommend one over the other or something else?

Man you carry a lot of "toys". If you want to get another battery for your 4.0 get it from here http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006KRZDUY/ref=cm_cr_asin_lnk. Yeah that's right they are like 5 dollars haha. I'm not sure about those roms. I trying to install 10.1 on my device.
It's later but I think that samsung have a galaxy player 5.8 but maybe is only in South Korea...

Ha, Ha. Well I always have my phone with me and I have a small backpack I toss in the car with a bunch of "stuff" in it.
Thanks for the battery link - saves me the trouble of finding what is compatible. At that price I just ordered 2 for the heck of it.
Time for me to start reading up about the ROMs and Root and Flash procedures for this device!
