My son and I both have photons. My son left his on top of his car the other day, and by the time he realized what he had done, it was too late. He retraced his steps and found the phone in the middle of a busy 6 lane road. The phone had been run over at least once as the glass was pretty much pulverized. However, the phone still powered on/off, there was some functionality of the pulverized touch screen, and the phone still received calls. With all the unique tech, the awesome radios, and almost indestructable build, tell me again why Motorola is abandoning this phone? It is a shame that his new Photon will come with 2.3.5.

stupid management doesnt want to invest in supporting current hardware and would prefer you upgrade ($$$) to a new phone (i.e. forced monetization).

Sprint will be happy to get you on a 2yr agreement with phone upgrade.
Sprint lost 423,000 subscribers in the July to September period, as trends across its product lineup were weak. Excluding recaptured Nextel customers, it lost contract-signing subscribers from the Sprint network for the first time in years. Customers on contract-based plans are the most lucrative.
Sprint also has another problem. They used to be the cheapest option. Verizon and AT&T now have new shared plans that make them cheaper than, or at least as cheap as Sprint for a large portion of Sprint family customers. I know I'm planning on paying the 100 bucks to get my wife and I out of our family plan and move to Verizon sometime between now and Christmas. That, along with Verizon's superior phone lineup, will entice a lot of people to switch. Keep in mind most people only use a few GB a month, so an unlimited plan doesn't matter to them. Also, most people don't care about rooting and ROM-ing their phones or bootloaders. VZ even includes hotspot, so that removes on reason for rooting.

when deciding on a cellular carrier use this simple formula:
(cost of phone) + (monthly bill)(months under contract) + one time fees = true price
you will likely find that the best deals are with prepaid plans.

Unlimited only makes up for the price if you live and work in a 4G area. I do not. There aren't many of those areas. Also, the coverage with the other companies are significantly better with 3G as well. I like to travel around the country, and I like to chase storms. That's important to me. I can deal with either the 6gb or 8gb limit, especially since there is wifi available at my home where I spend most of my time, and also at many of the public places nowadays such as restaurants and coffee shops and such. Unlimited data isn't as important unless you live in a 4g area and use that data as your home internet. Some people use a lot more than 8gb in a month without tethering, but it's rare. Besides it's not truly unlimited. If you use consistently too much Sprint will drop you. Also, I have a real hard time believing Sprint will be able to stay unlimited when their LTE network expands to enough areas.

After my contract is up I'm moving my family to prepaid. And no matter what some people think, prepaid is NOT exclusively for cheapskates or for those with less than stellar credit. It's for those that also do not want to be tied to a carrier anymore. With the multiple choices of prepaid carriers that are affiliated with the big 4 carriers it can be a better deal. My family uses very little data and some of us don't need a lot of minutes either. I've been experimenting with a few prepaid carriers lately and an pleased with the results. As of now I am trying pageplus that uses verizons spectrum on my original Droid and for my needs it's $12.00/month. Yes that's $12.00. It all depends on the needs of the individual. If the needs change, then it's easy to change plans. As for the cost of the phones, my son's and my photon will work on GSM networks,(I've already tried flashing mine to t-mobile and had good reception everywhere I went), and if anyone in my family wants a different phone then swappa is a great place to buy used phones. Not to mention the new Nexus 4 is $350.00 unlocked. If the economy continues to worsen as our dollar is devalued and we get ever closer to the fiscal cliff that we are approaching, more and more people will have to find alternatives to paying contract prices.

that is an ignorant thing to say.
Prepaid is for the smart consumer. It provides better value as well as freedom from longterm contract commitments.
Cellular service providers realize this. That is why they heavily discount phones because they know they easily profit from high monthly rates that the consumer is locked into for 2yrs.
The one great thing with the photon is that it is both GSM and CDMA. It will work on every carrier in the USA other than verizon.

1. There are different types of prepaid plans. Some are service per month while others are service per minute/mb. In either case there is no longterm contract commitment. Generally, the best value is a prepaid monthly plan.
2. Prepaid plans offer more value than a longterm contract.

Sprint’s MVNO contract states that Sprint must provide its Customer MVNOs with service parity to traditional Sprint wireless voice and data service. It’s all laid out in very clear terms. Well, as clear as terms can be when lawyers come together to create a tome.

I want to start by saying I work for Verizon wireless tech support so trust me I know I made the right choice. I just want to thank all of the devs for their hard work but my time here has ended. I have just received my Samsung Epic 4g Touch which blows dust on the X2 in every way. Why?.. For sure to get official ICS update, 1gig of ram with 16gig internal memory, bigger better display(4.52), cheaper plans and unlimited data usage with great 4g coverage. I only paid $79 including phone and wireless bluetooth earbuds and unlocked bl!! Screen is gorgeous and super fast!! You can get the same deal at letstalk.com.. I live in the western portion of North Carolina and Sprint service here is terrible. When I had Sprint, while in town where service was supposed to be "best" my calls would drop like crazy. I could go into a store and service would go away completely. I had the same issue with AT&T. By far Verizon has the better network in my area. It's sad that we cannot get our BL unlocked but I remain hopeful. As per price, VZW is costly but people keep paying them so I'm sure they don't plan to change that anytime soon.
I used to work as a Verizon tech support agent with Verizon Online DSL which sucked hard. I had nothing to do with the phones, unfortunately. But yeah, I have been considering moving to sprint, but, alas, the Verizon Galaxy Nexus is just beyond the horizon for me. I must have it. I will soon leave this phone and forum and enjoy the freedom of an unlocked bootloader like I once had with my Samsung Fascinate. Oh how I miss that phone. But oh well. Its GNex for me.
Sent from my DROID X2 using xda premium
Around here, unless you live in a bigger city Sprint in Northern Indiana has really no coverage. Hell where I'm at Verizon barely has any, either. But then again neither does the Death Star or any other carrier. This area is a black hole for cellular signal. Although VZW is a little more costly as far as coverage you can't beat it. Now hardware on the other hand...
The other reason I left Sprint was because when I was married and the wife went on vacation to Maine several times a year Sprint had no coverage. Imagine my surprise when they tell me that I have an $800 bill because the signal was bouncing off Canadian towers. Granted from where her father lived I could throw a stone and hit Canada, she was still on US soil. Hence the other reason i switched
Sprint was the first carrier I ever had. The reception sucked and I had horrible service. I since moved through carriers and settled in with Verizon since I rarely go through patches where I lose service.
I too still receive the unlimited data since having the plan for so long. I have some friends and family who remain on Sprint and honestly, all I hear them do is complain. Perhaps they're chronic complainers, I don't know or perhaps its the area they use the phone in, but I don't hear many good things despite being in a fairly metropolitan area.
I also receive a 25% discount on the plan and accessories so that helps keep me a loyal customer. If they get rid of unlimited data, I'd possibly consider but so far Verizon seems to be the better of the two evils for me.
Im no legal wizard but I firmly believe if they changed all of us who are grandfathered in it would be breach of contract. We renewed our contracts and they decide to change it? Not only would I go elsewhere but id tell them where to shove their early termination fee. At $250 per month Id better be getting unlimited!

Doubtful that it would be breach of contract because they reserve the right to adjust as necessary. They litter their contracts with jargon and other nonsense so normal people have no interest to actually read it word for word and simply put their trust in them.
They simply adjust what needs to be adjusted and use whatever clause is in the contract that states they can make changes as necessary for the betterment of the network and its users. Even if that means throttling the highest data usage customers.
Chances are though they wouldn't out right get rid of it and force us all onto limited data contracts. They'd completely do away with it if they wanted and when it came time for renewing the contract, it simply would not be an option. I wouldn't worry about this happening though.

Idk man. The unlimited 4G at T-Mobile looks nice when mine's up. Although, I'm trying to be hopeful that it will somehow encourage Verizon to rethink their stance because in terms of coverage in my area, no one comes close.
If you want to keep your unlimited plan just don't upgrade through Verizon. You can usually buy the newer phones on their networks for around $200 - $300 on eBay, swappa, craigslist, or amazon. Just pick up whatever phone you want and walk into Verizon and request a sim for the phone or have then program it.

I thought about that to but doesn't T-Mobile throttle you after like 500mb though and force you on 3g or 2g for the remainder of the month? I think sprint is the only one that won't cut you off. Sprint can't throttle you because if they slowed it down any more, it wouldnt even load the play store. It already took long enough to do that when I had sprint. I loved sprints customer service but their data network is awful, not to mention it will take them forever to roll out 4g. Verizon might cost more per month but it's worth it. Sprint has unlimited because their 3g is so slow you can't use a lot of data and their WiMAX is almost nonexistent unless you live in huge cities. Just warning you guys.

I never had a phone on att that worked worth a damn (iPhone back when I didn't know how truely evil apple was) on 3g but I have seen others on att do well on 3g. But 3g works well for me on Verizon. I use it all the time since it doesn't hog battery like 4g which is great in my area. But when I'm running a speestest on 3g with my buddy and his HTC evo 3d next to me and I pull almost 2.0mbps down and 1 up and he barely pulls a .5 down and .1 up with his 400ms ping, Verizon's 3g is the **** lol. But you are right att 3g is better, their 4g is garbage through. Everyone i know barely pulls 7-8 down on att 4g while I'm flying by them at 40mbps while streaming Pandora in the background
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using Tapatalk 2
Yea I mean if atts service didn't literally make me mad, I would still use them just for the phones.. Verizon's is the only one I've had that I actually notice how good it is. The phones and the lock down aren't that great that ¦~\ but service is first and foremost. Plus on LTE I've never had lower than 11 down and 2 up (its usually over 15 and under 40 up, with over 5 down) and I've been across states down south in 4G areas... ATT and TMO and Sprint don't compare in places Ive been down here. Plus my 3G speeds are as fast and their 4G pretty often and that's unacceptable to me.

I don't really think that's the reason... But I'm sure they considered that as well... I think it's because they own so much spectrum that they can increase the price of whatever they want and people will pay for it... Plus ATT started the teird data garbage. Verizon followed a year later... Then Verizon started the share plan garbage.. now ATT has followed that. It's all about money. Data used to be a lot cheaper once upon a time, but not as good persay.. Personally I think they should still have unlimited 4G and capped 3G or vice versa... Idk though... Meh it is what it is.

Not good news at all. We're gonna rely on some Japanese company to come in and continue our perks we already have? (Unlimited everything; especially data, cheaper plans, and a growing network revision) unless this isn't a full buyout and just basically a purchase of a large part of sprint to give as already stated, a large piggy bank...

I agree too. Just what we need, another company owned by an outside entity. Soon everything here will be owned by other countries.

Honestly, It wouldn't be that bad. Softbank isn't a bad telecom.
Sprint's Key advantages are its Network Vision Towers & consumer wise, its unlimited data. With T-MOBILE bringing it back it'd be silly to remove that anytime soon. Softbank could build on that faster.
Now if it were Verizon, Vodafone, Rogers, Bell or Any Other Canadian Telecoms it'd be a horror story.

This is horrible news. Sprint is bad enough as it is. Now management is going to be on the other side of the globe.

I pay the 11 some dollars a month for the TEP plan on my phones line, and I love the benefits. Since my first samsung moment dropped, I've probably had
3 replacement Samsung Moments
5 replacement EVO 4G's
5 replacement EVO 3D's
2 Replacement Blackberry Bold 9650's
I realize that's a lot of phones, but when you send out refurbed phones that were broken and then "repaired" what can you expect. I've honestly NEVER physically broken a phone to date (knock on wood), they've all suffered from software issues, or charging ports detaching etc.
Here's my question. I was talking to my friend last night, and he wants a new GS3 because of a superficial issue with his screen. I've had one or two phones replaced for some silly reasons, so I understand why he'd want a new one, but to date I've NEVER been charged for a phone replacement. They said it's a 150.00 fee for any kind of issues, and that's part of his TEP plan (He pays the 11.00 also).
Am I lucking out because I'm friends with all of the reps there? If there's a problem I walk into the store, ask for a replacement phone, they order one and I'm out of the store in 5 minutes and then the phones there tomorrow by 2pm. Can anyone chime in on this?
He will ONLY have to pay the 150 deductible if is physical damage.

Yes, and the thousands of people with 4G / LTE phones who live in areas WITHOUT 4G / LTE are still forced to pay that 10.00 a month, what's right about that?
Thanks for your concern though, ironically between the ages 18 and 19 I worked at my local Kmart as a loss prevention associate, and shoes were always the easiest to catch.

I wouldn't take moral advice on policies from people who void their warranties by rooting their phones. It's like taking financial advice from a hobo. However, yeah, doesn't surprise me that 1) they'd be easy to catch and 2) that people would steal shoes from that K-Mart. Aaaah, good times at K-Mart...miss the K-Cafe

Even with the $10 added fee it's still cheaper than anyone else for unlimited data. It's not a big deal.
I see the fee as one for unlimited data - way cheaper for me than the other business models. So I'm willing to pay.
Unfortunately when you get less than 200kbps at best you still pay a premium data fee and who cares about unlimited data when your speeds are pathetic. My phone is basically useless unless I'm on WiFi. Sprint won't cancel your contract unless you're roaming excessively and costing them money.
Sent from my EVO using xda premium
We dish out 50.00 a month to sprint for that "premium data" fee lol. That's a lot of money we just give sprint for the hell of it imo.

I'm sorry but premium data is for all smart phones because they use data all the time.
Still cheaper than what anyone else offers.

A quick story about the fee being for smartphones. My daughter's EVO had a software issue that I couldn't fix so we went to the Sprint store and switched her temporarily to her old LG Optimus. The Rep was able to remove the $10 fee. So tell me how is this possible if you can still have a non 4g capable smartphone on the plan? I do agree though that it is cheaper than the alternatives.
No clue. I just know they add it to all smartphones whether they have 4g or not. As of over a year.
Last year the only android phone that didn't get the fee was the Samsung replenish which is a piece of crap of a phone.
Sprint changed the 4g fee in August 2010 to a premium data fee for Android, wp, and BB phones.
You must have gotten a good Rep then.

The problem is I had decent coverage until I moved to a more urban area and now my coverage absolutely sucks.
Spent a half hour on the phone today with a "technical support" rep who was just reading off her computer how to update my profile and other pointless things. Trying to blame my poor speeds on my phone. She wanted me to take my phone to a repair center until I told her it can't be my phone because all four of my phones are just as bad. She finally told me she would pass it down to the service techs in my area and call when they figure something out. They keep blaming it on an outage, but it has been this bad for over a year.

there would also be a deductible for loss/theft, although I realize that didnt happen here.

Not so bad if you do the unlimited data bait & switch. Not all of us have the convenience of reliable coverage from multiple carriers in our areas regardless of what coverage maps show.
Quit judging, I'm just passing on info man.
There's a reason Sprint is cheap, their coverage sucks.

Some of us don't care as we are already WITH these carriers. If we are going to use them anyway, why not take advantage of a free phone?? (I am with ATT not verizon but same ol' same ol')
I am sick of peoples insistance that contract free is so great. If you live outside the USA, MAYBE, inside the USA that is not even close to true unless you A.) enjoy crap service B.) barely move C.) Never use your phone.
I would take AT&T or Verizon over any prepaid crap service and featureless "plan" any day of the week, hands down. I have tried many difference prepaid services and they are all the same, terrible spotty service, slow speeds, and hack call quality. Again this does not apply outside the USA, but here, prepaid is AWFUL.
I have no interest in swapping carriers, therefor I chose to use my upgrades and get free/discounted phones since I am going to continue to use AT&T anyway. My plan price does not go down if I do not, there is no advantage to me for not upgrading other than allowing to me to switch carriers.

Best Buy has it free for upgrade.
That's a really good deal. And what he said I have no intentions of leaving Verizon so it I'm going to pay the same anyway might as well upgrade. I lost my unlimited and now I'm on the 6 gig plan. I average like 2 gigs a month so it was no big deal for me. My daughter average 30 gigs a month so she pretty much has to stay unlimited lol

Some of us don't care about being locked into a contract. Where I live Verizon's coverage is so much better than everyone else's that I'll gladly pay more for it. Also, Verizon is offering former unlimited customers 6 GB of data for the 2 GB price with no additional strings attached. So the little to no data usage part doesn't apply either.
Did the exact same thing. BF $49 and cyber monday free. I took my receipt to best buy and they credited back my card. It was simple and fast.
Ordered mine for $0. Added as a new line. I already have a S3 on unlimited. Planning to break the contract immediately after activation and pay $350 ETF. Pay 1 day prorated monthly charge. Profit :good:. Sell my S3 for $180-$200 on ebay. U cant get such a good phone for $350 and still retain unlimited.
Have chat transcripts with VZW reps..who said doing such a thing will only result in a $350 ETF!!

You can get the deal if you use the loophole. I just did it twice, once for my line and just this week for my wife's line.
We both had upgrades due on our unlimited lines. We have 5 lines total on a national family plan, 2 are feature phones & 3 are smartphones. I transferred our upgrades to the feature phone lines, got the g2's at the promo price, and activated the new phones on the former feature phone lines. Immediately reactivated the feature phones on their respective lines by dialing *228 which deactivated the new phones and automatically cancelled the mandatory data plans required by the upgraded devices. Now that both new phones are free from their original lines, I popped in our SIM cards which reactivated the new phones on our unlimited lines.
So, new phones for promo pricing and unlimited data retained=win/win.
