[Q] Enabling Mass Storage 2.3.6 - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

I'm trying to root my friends' ATT SGS2 i777. on GB 2.3.6
When I connect it to the computer it won't recognize it and say the device has malfunctioned.
The phone says "MTP Initialization/Connected" when I want it to enable mass storage
The Latest Samsung Kies is installed, and the computer is up to date with drivers.
I've tried going to settings>Wireless and Networks>USB Utilities but it never really connects or mounts any SD
I've tried enabling USB Debugging but still not a mount or connection.
I've tried checking "Unknown Sources" and installing USB Mass Storage apk but it'll say an error parsing the package message.
I know what MTP is, but the phone only shows up on the computer as an unknown device.
From what I know, connecting and making sure the drivers are installed is the only way rooting this phone.
Please help with any suggestions, I know there is a way.

There should be an icon in the notification bar to enable UMS

Get Mobile ODIN and flash a stock rooted tar file. Just like you would on PC ODIN.

USB issue Kies starts, but not recognised

When I plug USB cable in my win64 device manager recognises the usb connection as "SAMSUNG Mobile USB Composite Device"
Kies automatically starts.
but Kies does not does not connect to my phone
nor does my phone show in "My computer"
If I enter storage mode then I can access SD card and external card.
of significant note is I recently did a full format and installed Check's Dark Knight Edition Rom (but I can't post there due to newb restrictions).
I have tried to reinstall drivers using Kies but that hasn't worked.
I have deleted the drivers from PC using device manager and allowed windows to reinstall them.
any help is greatly appreciated, thank you
I get no error messages
I've tried connecting with debug mode... it installs drivers but still computer doesn't recognise phone.
Still phone appears connected in device manager.
You have to close all open programs on your phone and return it to the home page. Until you do this your phone will not connect. You should then see a Usb Plug on your screen. It should then say Initializing and then connected. Then you should see it in My Computer and get into you phones files though there too.
Hope this Helps......
Thanks.. but I know about that and it isn't that.. also.. since installing LiteningRom this has not been necessary... but good call thank you.
I've tried to connect on a different computer and was unable to connect to that.. so possibly an issue with the phone?
Could it be that you have activated the "USB debugging" mode under settings->applications->development?
So I install Cognition S2 ROM and it works fine!

Nope not that.. I had turned debugging USB on and off a number of times in the hope it would do something.. but nope
Just to test this out...
I reinstall Check's Dark Knight Edition Rom and once again I cannot connect to my computer...
I will remove this rom, factory rest and install something else
I have noticed.. 2 extra drives appear in "my Computer"... I can't access them but they appear when I plug in my phone.. and disappear when I remove it
so clearly my external and internal cards phone SD cards are not being recognised correctly when using Check's Dark Knight Edition Rom...
any ideas?
and yes I have removed, deleted drivers numerous times... installed via Kies installed via auto Windows
ok... installed Cognition S2 ROM and connected to computer... it the phone says MPT - initialisation then MPT- connection it didn't say this with dark rom!
For anyone else having this issue, it seems to be related to MTP. MTP is present in cognition, and removed from Check's rom, you can easily add this back in to make it work.
I've done a search for this with the intention of reinstalling it..
but I cannot find anything... maybe my search is off or I'm not using the correct keyword.. any help here would be great.
Also.. as this seems to be removed from a number of ROMs I have a further question.. what is the alternative?
Thanks

Thanks.. but still what do ppl use to back up their phones? if they haven't got this installed?
Dizzee, I had the exact same problem as yours and solved it my removing "USB debugging" in settings, as Alchemius mentioned previously. Can you double check you've done this.

Tab doesn't read as a storage device

So i got my 10.1v awhile back and now have a GNEX so i went ahead and rooted and unlocked via the recovery.zip, kernel.zip method and installed the kang rom. the Rom installed and i have Clockwork installed and working properly but now my device doesnt show up as a storage device, Running windows 7 x86. It shows up as an unspecified device SCH-I905. Under the properties it shows up as an ADB device and a USB composite device, ive manualy installed the drivers, and alowed keis to try to detect it and to no avail.... Should also be said i dont care one bit if i have to flash with a 10.1 Wifi rom due to the fact i dont intend to ever use the 3g.
So i guess my question is how do i get my tab to read as a mass storage device?
You need to enable MTP:
USB MTP:
Go into the settings
Choose storage
Tap the 3 dots in the upper right (menu)
Choose "USB computer connection"
Check "Media device (MTP)"
Done

Unable to use "USB Mass storage" on my Galaxy S II

Hello All,
I got my new Galaxy S II yesterday and it came with ICS. I am trying to connect the phone on to the PC as Mass Storage - but as soon as I connect my phone, my PC (Which runs on XP) says "USB Device not recognized". I tried USB Debugging, enabling Mass storage under Settings->More->USB utilities etc. Nothing works. I even tried with a different cable - no luck. Can anyone help me to fix this issue? Thanks a lot.
Read this -
http://www.jayceooi.com/2012/03/14/...storage-on-android-4-0-ics-samsung-galaxy-s2/
USB mass storage was removed by default in the ICS upgrade. Now the S2 uses MTP, similar to the Galaxy Nexus. Windows 7, Ubuntu & OS X can read it, but XP doesn't have MTP functionality built in. I guess it can be enabled though, don't know how. In any case, USB mass storage is still accessible, follow the link.

[Q] Phone not detected, but charging and USB tethering working

This is probably a common problem, I saw lots of threads but I can't find any solutions to it, and I really want to make my phone faster i.e. root
Phone: LG P990 (Optimus 2x)
Problem:
Phone not detected by the computer when connected through USB.
What I tried:
1. Factory reset (only data)
2. Cleaning the port with a toothbrush
3. Uninstalling and re-installing drivers
4. Replacing the cable I was using with the OEM one (I lost my original together with my charger)
5. Plugging into different computers and USB ports
6. Checking and unchecking the option of connecting through mass storage only
7. Enabling and disabling USB debugging
What's so incredible about my problem is that the phone actually knows that it is connected to the computer - the USB tethering option is available and it says that USB's connected - but the USB connection icon on the status bar for mass storage doesn't show up. I'm not sure if it's a software or hardware problem. So any ideas how to fix this?
Bump.
Android version: 2.3.4
Kernel version: 2.6.32.9
Firmware version: LGP990-V20d
Please help!
Just some updates.
See proposed fix: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1981359
My computer showed the unknown device message when I chose CP UART. I'm working on the rest of the fix now, and hopefully the problem can be solved.

[Q] Dirty Unicorns Mass Storage problem

I cant post in the Dirty Unicorns thread so I am posting here. People said that USB Mass Storage is working flawlessly in dirty unicorns. However, I still can't get it to show up at all. I'm wondering what steps I should take? Right now all I know is when I connect it via usb, on the phone, a USB Mass Storage page opens up for a split second, then closes. I have it enabled in the storage settings. Any help with this?
Have you tried different ports on the PC, different cords, and/or a different PC to make sure it's not something with the rom itself since it is working for others? If there's not a notification when it's plugged in to tell you it's connected, then it's probably one of those 3 things. Does MTP work? Also, open the Device Manager and check the driver status when you plug it in to see if the PC does recognize it and whether or not it is trying to load the correct drivers.

I'm getting the error "This device cannot start. (Code 10)" in device manager. Also, it first shows up as drive L with a yellow triangle, but then it disappears after a little while.
Also, I am able to successfully connect it, get the drivers automatically, and keep the USB Mass storage page open when using a different computer. So it's got to be something with my computer right now. Think you could walk me through what to do with the drivers and whatnot?
