I've tried several Jellybean builds (CheckROM, Wanamlite, Omega) and have the same problem with all of them. Whenever I turn off 3G data it re-enables itself within a few minutes. Has anyone else had this problem with JB?
Most likely it is a problem with some of the installed by you soft wghich tires to connect to network.

What's the best of identifying which app might be causing it??
If your phone is rooted, it is simple: install DroidWall from market
I'm running Omega v31 since Indie released it. No problem so far.. Same when I was on CheckROM before.
Did you do a full wipe before installing the ROMs?

Yes I did a wipe/delete cache/delete Dalvik cache before installing each ROM.
I installed Droidwall and denied 3G access to ALL apps, but still something is switching on my data service within an hour of me disabling it.
???
I never met the app which turned firewall of by itself....
Last resort: install Titanium Backup, and by freezing one by one check which one causes this.
Must it be an app that's trying to access 3G, or is the o/s enabling 3G for some reason??
If you have set software check, it may, but I doubt it.
From system apps - I'd look into news daemon, stock daemon, account sync, weather update and similar.
Surely the question isn't which app is attempting to use 3G, but why it is able to turn 3G on when I've explicitly disabled it? If I turn 3G off should it prevent any app from using it??
Usually no, BUT:
- some apps can have root access;
- some apps can have "strange" permissions, especially if taken from... not 100% trustworthy source.
One more what can help to diagnose: Permissions Denied from Play, can verify app-by-app which one will have permission to access network.
Personally, what I'd do:
- install Titanium Backup;
- backup all apps;
- freeze system apps (Stock Daemon, news daemon, FB, YT, SamsungUNA, push etc)
- look if the situation persists, if not - I'd try to unfreeze sys apps one by one, and then restore my apps.
I'm using Onavo Count to monitor for data usage and it's showing that only "Google Services" and "Google Account Manager" have used any data since the last reboot. Since both of those are pretty central to the Android experience I'm now stumped. I can't disable them, but why/how are they overriding my settings and starting up 3G when I've explicitly chosen to disable it??
Hmmm... by the accident - do you have auto sync left in the settings?

Sync is switched on for Gmail only, but even this shouldn't be able to enable 3G when I've turned off 3G???
Same problem...
I have the same problem, since I updated to jellybean - the mobile data just switches itself back on even though I have manually disabled it.
I have the stock software, sorry, haven't had the guts to flash it yet
Anybody find an answer?
Thanks in advance

Have you checked in Settings>Data Usage>Mobile Data was unchecked after switch off the mobile data from notification? It could be either that or auto sync that force mobile data to switch on. Try to turn off mobile data and turn on auto sync, then see in an hour if there's any effect.
Because if stock (non-rooted) also have same problem, it should be something in the settings..
Anyway, mine doesn't have any problem like this..
try this
u may try this ....like press *#*#4636#*#* and the goto phone information the select the type of network u want..
btw this works for many of the devices....on any version of android

Hi hope someone can help.
I've bought an Xperian X10 mini for my daughter. She loves it. All her friends love it. The iPhone owners want one! (Big) but.....
She is not a heavy user, and so put her on a PAYG contract. However it is running out of credit very quickly, and when I checked the usage it is nothing she is doing, but some background app that is regularly (hourly) connecting with GPRS and doing... well something, but I have no idea what :-S The info on the usage (from Orange) is (e.g.)
date & time event type dialled number/description duration/vol(Kb) cost (?)
22/05/11 19:22 GPRS ap-prepaidsessio 38.0 0.00
with the same entry every hour:22
We have tried disabling as many sync type options / apps as we can find (e.g. Timescape) but it is still happening, and is driving me up the wall.
The reason I am even more annoyed is that most of the time it is at home, and connected (apparently successfully) to our wifi, so why the hell is it using GPRS anyway when there is an active wifi conection?! :-S
I have tried everything I can think of, and short of turning it off there seems little I can do. Can anyone help please??
- Which app is doing this?
- How do I configure it to either
i) use Wifi (preferred - would rather not disable functionality if possible) or
ii) stop auto syncing every hour?
Any help very gratefully received!
Thanks in advance
T
There are a couple of apps out there that can monitor data usage per app. But so far, all those that I found require Froyo (2.2) and above. I'm guessing your using the stock SE ROM so that's 2.1.
But there is an alternative.
Dial *#*#4636#*#*
Click Usage Statistics
Click Battery history
Click the Other usage dropdown
Click network usage
That should show you which apps are using your network connection. But both wifi and 3g; at least it gives you an idea.
As to how to prevent use, you could go to each app and customize syncing options if at all possible. If you just want to block an app from using the network totally, I suggest LBE Privacy Guard, free on the market.
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.lbe.security
They have a thread here on XDA: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1091065
EDIT: BTW, the phone shouldn't be using GPRS when wifi is available. That's weird. First time I've heard of that happening.
Many thanks for the info - really useful - will check the links you've given.
On the wifi (and yes it is weird - and annoying!) could it be "connected" but without a "proper" connection? Is there some way I can check, e.g. switch off GPRS and see if can see www?
Just tried what you suggested (disconnected the internet from my wifi router, but router still on), and my X10MP didn't even attempt to connect to GPRS despite using apps which use data. The apps returned errors.
Maybe your X10M fails to connect to the wifi? I actually have no idea what's going on.
you and me both buddy!
thanks for trying tho!
I'll delete the connection anyway and try set it up again....

very simple fix, go to Settings > Wireless & Networks > Mobile Networks > uncheck Data enabled.
that way mobile data (gprs,edge,3g) is turned off and your problem is solved. If you're using stock SE software, theres a Data Traffic widget that lets you toggle the Data Enabled setting on and off easily.
Sync is not the only thing using data traffic, background apps can too, as well as some of the apps she might be using. ( some apps have adverts )
Thanks. Had also been nosing on SE site, and am obviously not the only person with this problem. I unchecked the box a few hours ago, am hoping that that cures it. I've also found anotehr PAYG plan with the same provider that has unlimited internet, so may switch to that. So one way or another will be resolved.
However I am still left annoyed. This ****** device is supposed to be under MY contorl not the other way round! Not knowing what is doing this, or (and because of this) not being able to stop it is ****** annoying! As is the fact it (whatever "it" or "they" are) is using GPRS when there is an open wifi connection!!
Ho hum - progress eh...
Well turning off the Data seems to have done the trick thanks. NOt really satisfactory not knowing what is doing it, but there we go. Thanks for all the help all
If shes not using the data at all, you can try to delete all access points - GPRS,WAP, etc. even MMS...with no APN, no connection, no access to net, no credit loss...Just go to settings-wireless networks-mobile networks-access point names-click on any of them-press menu button and choose delete...Im working for the operator so I solve this kind of problems every day :-D It is easy if you dont want to use net in mobile at all but still I think you should flash it with SEUS because your problem is weird.
That's the thing - she does use data. so want it to be enabled. but the vast majority of the time is at home with a perfectly good wifi connection, so why won't it use that?!
Anyway am swapping to a PAYG tarriff promising "free" internet, so will see how that goes.
thanks t
Bug issue has been solved as if FXP45. Thanks to all who helped track this nasty critter down.
I've been asked to start up a thread specifically for tracking down the data loss bug in FXP41,42 and 43. I'm currently one of the very few that are not suffering from this problem.
Background
The data loss issue is when your wifi or 3g status indicators still show you as being connected to the internet and Google (green indicators) but no data is transferred. A reboot of the phone will restore data for a limited period of time before the same thing occurs again. After a fresh install, it can take anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours for data loss.
For those that have the problem nothing tried so far as been able to rectify the problem for any length of time and for those of us that don't have the problem we can't duplicate it.
What needs to be done
We need to find some common denominator between the devices / users that are having this problem that is also something that none of the working devices / users don't have. If you have anything to add that you've tried to do to duplicate the problem or fix the problem please post or PM me with the details and I'll keep this OP up to date.
What been tried to duplicate problem on working devices
1. Fresh install - Nope
2. Market update / downgrade - Nope
3. Forcing sync - Nope
4. Factory data reset and login with different account - Ongoing
What's been tried to fix the problem
1. Fresh install - Nope
2. No Gapps - Nope
3. Market downgrade - Nope
What still need to be tested (suggestions please)
1. Working device/user create a different Google account and test with that.
2. Who is using 2 step verification and do they have problem or not.
3. Compare results of a clean install using the same account on a working and not working phone. (I have account setup PM me for login if you want to help test)
This should get the ball rolling, I'll add some more is a couple of hours once I get my head in gear.
I've had the problem today. I didn't try to format the sdcard first, but maybe it helps. I can't try it until next week at least

I was on this rom (fxp041) for a while, it was at least two weeks before i got the data bug. I'll have another go tomorrow installing the latest version fresh. I'll experiment to see what causes it. Hopefully report back tomorrow with some report.
cheers, lunar.

I've just done a factory data reset and setup the phone using a different gmail account that I created for this test. If I loose data then maybe it's account related.
Well, I have tried two different google accounts, so either both of my accounts are screwed, or it isn't something tied to the Google account. However, it didn't happen to me UNTIL I installed the GApps addon package either time - first time I installed the ROM, had data no problem for about 3 hours, then was like "Whoops, wait a minute, need my Gmail / Market apps", so I installed the package and lost it. Second time, installed both, had net, did a Market download of a few apps, checked gmail, worked fine for about half an hour, then went kaput. Did the second time with a DIFFERENT google acct.
Hi,
The data bug began for me with the fxp30b release. I tested so many things to tackle that nasty bug.

Hi GBD,,
I have tried everything you have in the op and nothing has worked for me too, also you can rule using a new account as i have tried that too even on a fresh install.
I thought that when market updated it was that causing the issue but yesterday i froze the marketupdater app with titanium, signed in, and the problem still occurred. In fact before signing into google the phone had worked fine for several hours with no data issues.
I wonder if Crowds has found the solution here..

Can someone test this out. Do a fresh install and as soon as you boot up and connect to your google account, manually set your time to 11:59pm and allow it to roll over to the next day.
The market should update when the roll over occurs and if it's the cause, you'll loose data at that time.

Did fresh install of FXP043, after first boot up connected with account, selected some Gapps to install, at that time it automatically synced. Connected to wifi to download gapps faster, after that changed time to 11:59 pm (decided to stay on edge, no wifi). 2 minutes later there was new market, and everything worked just fine. Visited some websites, changed to wifi and back. Data still working. I can't reproduce data issue...
I came from FXP030b in which data was also working for me(had few issues at the beggining first but then data was working fine)

I'm running FXP43 and just encountered data loss but found a solution (at least in my case, not sure if it's 100% effective for everyone).
What I did:
- Went into Dev Tools > Bad Behavior > Crash the system server
- Screen seemed to freeze but I let it sit for a good 30+seconds to see if it would become responsive
-After no response I pulled the battery and removed my sd & sim cards for 30+seconds then replaced them
-Booted my device and data is back
If anyone tries this method and it helps I'd appreciate the THANKS!

Hi guys, can i ask something connected to data - on GB Sola when i put all automatic connections to manual data was never working/blinking.
Now in ICS i have google play account and my corporate mail, both put on manual not automatic, and very often data is stil working/blinking.
Why is that?
You mean data sometimes blinks and sometimes doesn't?
If it's what I think you mean, the data sign blinks only when data is being transferred, it remains still when no data is needed. I'm not totally sure but I think that's what you mean?
SharpnShiny said:

Yeah, thats what i mean. In GB it wasnt blinking until data is activated by something, here its blinks when it wants.
Second strange thing is - in Accounts i remove Automatic Updates for google account, but sometimes the phone tells me there is an update - why it continue checking for updates? (Never happened in gb)
If data blinks a lot, it must be background apps. News apps/facebook/emails?
When you get notification of an update, is it for apps in the play store or a Sony update centre update? If it's apps in the play store, the only way that I know of getting rid of that is 'disable background data' or as you would expect, 'data enable'.

No news, no facebook account, no email accounts either. In GB when i set my gmail account to "no automatic updates", data never made a blink.
It blinks because of Google Play app updates. The gmail account is set to "no autoupdates", but still inform of updates.
What do you mean by "disable background data", where can i find this?
Yeah I find the Play Store updates annoying sometimes too. A tiny, tiny update in a game I only use sometimes does not need to barage the top of my phone screen.
OK I have just looked into 'disable background data'. I thought it was renamed in ICS, but according to this:
http://android.stackexchange.com/qu...-require-background-sync-on-ice-cream-sandwic
'background data' has been *permenantly turned on* in ICS, whereas in Gingerbread we were able to turn it off with a tick box. The menu in Gingerbread said that that disabled app notifications and saved battery.
I found more people discussing it on this thread, if you would like to read more, I'm sorry to say it's no longer possible in ICS, only Gingerbread and earlier

I was not aware of this rule, and in my haste to try and identify my problem, neglected to follow forum rules.
I'm also getting 3-4 mobile/cell broadcasts an hour and turning off all the options plus re install does nothing. Might try and go back to nightly dated the 15th and see if that does anything, if I can that is.
same problem with the 15th

Try another Kernel like Temasek, N.E.A.K or yank. Problem will disappear

I have had the same issue since switching the CM nightlies a week or so ago. I delete System/App/cellbroadcastreceiver.apk (after copying backup to SD card). This stops the notfications. I dont know if this causes any other issues, but I have not noticed anything else not working as a result. When you flash the next nightly that file will return again..

theres a few things you can try, first go to system settings > more > mobile broadcasts and unsellect all the options, if this does not work for you, you can FREEZE 'mobile broadcasts' with Titanium Backup, I recommend FREEZING rather than uninstalling!! however if you want to remove then use root explorer go to system> apps> mobile broadcasts.apk i do not advise doing this as i am not sure of the outcome! Its strange though. But if you go to the setting, then mobile data, you will see that it is turned off. Turning it back on, will re-enable it. I dont know why it does it though. No need for air plane toggle.
Is there any possibility this problem could be tied to a default power-saving setting that is turning mobile data off to conserve battery?
Just a thought.

I did two things, but I haven't had this happen since I did them.
1. Renamed HwPowerGenieEngine3.apk and HwPowerGenieEngine3.odex to disable them. (just add .bak to the end) They are located in "root/system/app/HwPowerGenieEngine3/" and "/<SAME/ARM/"
2. Enabled the option in Mobile Network settings to "Always-on mobile data"
Like I said, I don't know for sure if either really fixed it, but I haven't been having this problem for the past 2 days.
#1 . do I need root to rename the files?

I did two things, but I haven't had this happen since I did them.

yes, that requires root
I have no answer for you but, I am on T-Mobile and that's not happening to me. My WiFi becomes disabled sometimes/rarely. Also USB debugging gets disabled as soon as I back out of the settings for it. This is on B309.
My friend and I both using HAM2 on Wind, still on 4.3. Phone signal (not only Data) frequently turned itself off, then turned back on after a minute or longer.
Could it be the AWS (1700) frequency not reacting well to Huawei power genie?
I tried using "Normal" instead of "Smart" power saving scheme but no joy. Just froze "Power Genie" app via Titanium Backup. I think it turns the power saving feature off completely. Will monitor to see if it helps. I'll trade network stability for shorter battery life.
Apparently this problem is getting worse with Lollipop update.
