[Guide] Defeat Cricket Data Throttle - HTC EVO 3D

This is a guide that explains the steps to defeat Crickets data throttling and, in my case, give you faster internet(1.5 mb as compared to 300 kb tops). Many people will tell you that the throttle is carrier side however this is false and it is easy to test and see that for yourself. Simply download an internet speed testing app and run it. Watch as soon as it starts to check speed and you will see the speed skyrocket then back down to throttled speed after a second.
Anyhow.....on to the guide..
Requirements:
Rooted HTC Evo 3D
ES File Browser(this guide is made for this file browser but it will be similar in other browsers as well)
Simple right? OK, here's how to go about removing your data throttle:
1) Open your choice of file browser
2) Browse to the following location: /data/system/throttle
3) Delete all files in the throttle folder
4) Browse to the following location: /data/system
5) Long hold the throttle folder
6) Click Properties
7) Click Change
8) Select all the options available except for write(6 of the 9 options will be selected)
9) Click OK then exit the file browser app
10) Open an internet browser of your choice
11) You should get to the Cricket page telling you you are attempting to do an action not allowed on your account and you will have no internet access.
12) Reboot and you should have no throttle.
This throttle bypass will last until you reboot your phone and in my experience it has worked 100 percent of the time.
Feel free to check it out and let me know your mileage..

I thought it worked at first. Before following your steps I was getting 646 kbps down and after your steps my first test was 924kbps but then second test dropped down to 540kbps. Maybe someone else has better luck, I'll keep playing with it though, thanks bud.

Is that "sdcard/data/throttle"? I can't find the folder anywhere.

You may have to enable the "up to root" option in es file browsers settings.

I'm not positive if it gives everyone an increase in speed. Its just my experience with it.. I've noticed when I get data drops that the throttle fix will be gone after turning data off then back on so I will have to redo the fix in order to get it working again.

Since in flashed my Sprint Evo 3D my download speed is 15KLBS.I followed all the flashing info.Im currently Running OTA ICS rooted.Im on the $70 plan and im no where near my data allowance for this month. Can u please help??

Hi, I use a Samsung core prime running kitkat 4.4 (rooted) I've been through all of the system files. I cannot fine /data/system/throttle ! Path does not exist!

HELP: Jumpy/Sporadic Widgets in Overview Mode

I'm not sure why but whenever I flash a GB ROM the widgets in overview mode jump around too much/too fast to the point where I can't even accurately choose which one I want to go to. It's smooth at first after a fresh boot/reboot but as time goes on my overview mode always starts to act crazy no matter which ROM I flash (I've been going back n forth between EWJET and WB and it happens with both of them). Is it possible to get the stock overview mode from GB with the widgets that are static and don't move round like in these custom versions? Any help would be appreciated, this is the only feature I am starting to not like.
I suspect this has to do with the fps unlock. I noticed it worked OK without it.

I didn't even think of that! That does sound like it could be a valid reason. Thanks!
Hey speig, do you know if there's a way to remove the uncap/restore the 30 or 32 (whichever it is) cap? I searched and found a solution in a thread that says to delete some line from a file in root explorer but it's not letting me edit the file, just view it even though I enable all permissions. Thanks in advance if you're able to help!
Scratch that...I was able to use ES file explorer/manager to restore the cap

How to change Data Usage Policy - CM7

I am putting this one outside of the CM7 thread only because it seems to have been asked with no answer.
I have used beta #2 and #4 and in both instances i get a Data has exceeded limit warning and my speed gets throttled down to 300kb/s I am looking for a way to edit these settings but am yet to find it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
EDIT FIX Found!
Dug through some files with root explorer
data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db
(need to have a db editor on your device)
open secure
What i changed was throttle_threshold_bytes
and added 000 on the end of the number. increased the limit to 3gb upon reset which is fine by me. I am sure you can play with those settings a bit more i just chose not too.
I have also been having this issue. Did this make the notification go away?
yes just have to reboot after. with my exact changes it will come back if I use more than 3GB in a day (highly unlikely)
I have an unlimited data plan so I wasn't experiencing any loss of data speed but the notification was annoying!
I did this and it worked for me. Ill add this to the CM7 issue I started on the website as a temp fix
it seemed to effect me, but it couldn't have been placebo due to the area i work in. Oh didn't see your issue there or I would have posted there as well.

Its issue 126 I think.
For anyone else looking at this: I used root exprlorer
This changes the throttling but does not get rid of the notification.
Thanks for the tip anyway.
There has to be a way to disable.
Update:
A bit more digging around in database the OP mentioned led me to set throttle_polling_sec to 0. This seemed to disable the policy after a restart. It no longer shows in settings and I don't get the notification anymore.
Sent from my MB860 using xda premium
Had the same issue with the official BETA of CM7. Don't know why it does that because no one report the issue... I did try to change the throttle_threshold_bytes with my contract data plan 1 gig (1073741824) and rebooted. I confirm it solve the issue
Many thanks!

V6 Supercharger script and the MoPho

Simple script to run to maximize the MoPho's RAM usage. **ROOT USERS ONLY**
I take NO credit for this tweak whatsoever, and am simply providing a quick "how-to" of how to run the script for those who have not used it on previous Android devices.
Here's the link to the original thread (in the general section in the MoPho forum), created by member Custodian on 8/11/11. Big thanks to him for that! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1212820
First, follow the ongoing development threads to familiarize yourself of what this tweak truly accomplishes:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=991276
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=15948434#post15948434
Secondly, follow this how-to, in this order:
1) Download the script of your choice from the second hyperlink above, or from - http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...postcount=5021
2) Download Script Manager from the Market (free app).
3) Wipe your caches.
4) Open Script Manager, locate the script you dl'd on your SD Card, select "run as root", and DO NOT select "run as boot".
5) Load the script (select 1 or 0 for scrolling speed). It will most likely tell you that you are running too new of a Busybox version, and may experience bootloops. You're fine. Busybox v1.19.2-Stericson runs just fine, no issues.
6) Once script loads, enter selection #9 (Super 1000hp Aggressive mem setting).
7) Enter selection #13 to "bulletproof" your Launcher (helps eliminate risk of having it close during while your mem settings are working)
8) Enter selection #19 for Nitro Lag Nullifer, and install.
9) Enter selection #25 for options. Enter y for build.prop edit.
10) Enter selection #27 to close the script.
Now, reopen Script manager and navigate to the folder /sdcard/V6_SuperCharger. Run the 99SuperCharger.sh script, and select to "run as root", and "run as boot".
Reboot your phone, and you are good to go.
You can create widgets to quickly shift between memory tweaks.
Lastly, you can run the V6 script and select #19 to "flush" your caches and reclaim any lost RAM throughout the day to keep your phone running optimally without having to reboot your phone or "kill" any apps through various task managers. I do this about 1x-2x a day just as habit, but not necessary by any means. (A widget can be created for this too - open Script Manager, and find /data/fast_engine_flush.sh. One click RAM re-claimer!)
That's it. No need for any 3rd party task managers (ATK, Auto Killer, etc.). Just let the script do its thing, and enjoy a lag free MoPho!
this is great - I ran across this the other day - very easy to install and activate - my phone seems to be very reponsive - quite a interesting MOD - thanks for posting!

NICE!
I get crap 3G speed @ work regardless of which 3G script I run (.2-.4 down on avg), but .8-1.0 avg w/ 4G. I didn't realize that it doesn't exactly hurt the battery life tremendously to leave 4G enabled on the MoPho, as it puts itself into a sleep mode when not in use. I'm not sure of the specifics as far as scan/refresh intervals right off hand, but I'm tracking approx 1% of batt. life lost every 10 minutes while the phone is idle and 4G enabled (data disabled, as I'm sure I'd be losing 3-4% batt. life in the same range w/ it enabled w/ 4G).
Dumb question: Anything special I should know to run 3G turbocharger?

Nope. Just run the script and select the option that's best for you and reboot. Test all 4 and the experimentals.
YMMV - not all phones behave the same, and I'm sure 3G gains/losses are still contingent upon your location anyway, so you may experience a boost, a loss or no change at all. Either way, it won't hurt anything to try it.
Now RC2 is out... The best setting for MoPho is option 9+12.... Use build prop option to stick otherwise will not stick after reboot.... V6 default windowsmgr event setting is only 75. If you want better smooth scolling change this line "windowsmgr.max_event_per_sec=75 to 150(got two lines not include original line). Well 3g tweak is depend on your service provider.... test with speed test.net and find which setting is the best for you.

i have both running on my phone and it is pretty fast, i used the experimental #1 for the 3g and i was hitting 1+ meg downloads which is faster than the .48-.75 that i normally get. usually when i open my browser on 3g it takes a while to load even the google homepage but now it pops up as soon as i open the browser no load time same for xda took a while before now it loads really quick almost ike i have 4g on i had to double check and make 4g was the first time i tried it because it was so much faster.
RC3.1 is out already. Looks like there are a bunch of fixes and enhancements.

Data throttle hack removal

I'm like you., always disappointed with out speeds. I'm fairly broke right now so I find myself USB tethering my Droid to the computer so my daughter can do here homework.and tether the PC to a wifi router for the upstairs Wii for her and the sons xbox.every month I'm around 4GB of data.I'm a hacker from way back..prob b4 I. But I found a throttle remover that truly worked for.
1: using file explore out root explore go to data ~ system ~ throttle.. back the two files to your sd card,,, then delete en..wonderful 3g bliss..check it on your next startup to make sure its still gone..using speedtest for the post year my best speeds were around 300~400Kb that's all..but I know after running ten times with 2 test were around the same.but the other eight times I averaged at 1245. It'll get me through until the revolution comes back around again and we get rid of our fast ass politicians and take back control.so people can work again..
Thats a pretty old mod. It is hit or Miss with whether it works for ya or not.
Powerboost mod 2.2 has a universal unthrottle mod that edits a database and has been seeming to help keep my speeds more constant
The.only thing u can use.powerboost mod at this point is unthrottle. All the other mods must be flash but we (Droid x2) are not supported yet for those mods.
I'm glad that mod seems to be working for ya tho

u do not put a "/" in front of sysrw
just type su (press enter)
sysrw (press enter)
powerboost (press enter)
make sure that when u did the "extract all" on the pb2.2.zip that it went to /sdcard/extracted
if it went anywhere else it won't work right
and u ran the setup.sh as root?

speed test app is unreliable
how have ur browsing speeds been?
also
many factors go into speed.
if a bunch of people just woke up in your area and started using their 3g then your speeds will drop due to high traffic.
difference is if you were getting throttled before and the tower got busy your speeds would be down even lower than they are now

When you extract it your files probably went to speed software folder. You need to move this contents to SD/extracted. Then it will work.I had the same issue at first.
Found the problem.. CDMA 3g post is a bad download. Found this from RootzWiki pb2. 2 with updated link as of 12-8.... This would have made my head not spin, if dragons link were Updated on xda.. http://minus.com/mpqnmtqtn#1
Goodluck this actually works now
Android Unthrottle
I just worked through this on my Droid X. If you only want the unthrottle hack, just run the update.sh script. You don't need to go through the complete install by running setup.sh and then running the powerboost script.
And if you don't want to download the whole zip, here is the update.sh script:
Code:
#!/system/bin/sh
####TEST
###new Unthrottle Method
###Now UNIVERSAL
DATABASE=/data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db
value=0
for line in $(sqlite3 $DATABASE "SELECT * FROM secure" | busybox grep throttle); do
id=`echo $line | busybox cut -d "|" -f1`
name=`echo $line | busybox cut -d "|" -f2`
sqlite3 $DATABASE "replace into "secure" values(${id},'${name}','${value}')";
echo "Set ${name} to ${value}"

[MOD] [CM10] MMS Fix (Sprint)

MMS has been extremely flakey for me on CM10. After some searching, I found some alternate APNS settings here, and tweaked the ones on the phone to work properly.
Installation directions are the same as the linked post, so full credit goes to AlpineMan for that. The only thing I did was remove the unnecessary crap from the file.
Download the APN config from here.
Install APN Backup & Restore.
Convert the "APN Backup & Restore" into a system app by either using Titanium Backup, or simply use Root Explorer/ES File Explorer (root enable it) to move the APK from /data/app to /system/app.
I didn't need to do so here (using Titanium Backup), but rebooting the phone may be necessary after moving the app.
Launch APN Backup & Restore. Close the warning, and click "Disable ICS Check" on the menu.
Click "Backup APNs" to backup your existing settings. This will create a directory called "ApnBackupRestore" in your /mnt/sdcard.
Copy the xml file from step 1 to the ApnBackupRestore folder.
Go back to the main app menu, click on "Delete APNs" and confirm it.
Choose the file you downloaded from step 1 and confirm it.
Reboot phone, and enjoy the MMS.
Again, this is based on AlpineMan's work, I just cleaned the APN list up. In my short testing, it completely fixed my MMS flakiness. I figured it's better to post it here, as in the past, submitting fixes to the cyanogenmod team has been a waste of time.
I thought APN's were obsolete since ICS, can you restore APN's in JB?
Thanks for posting this! Mms is the only reason that kept me from using cmx as a daily driver. Will be definitely using this after work tonight when I have time to play.

I finally had a chance to test it on the AOKP JB build 4. I dont live in an area with LTE service. I still have 3g and its the same speed as from before and after this mod.
I can confirm that it does work for me. I havent tested out LTE yet. Is that what you meant by the enhanced network?
Can anyone confirm if LTE still works with this apn?
as for now i guess i'll keep it. 3g has definitely gotten slower for sprint in the past years. definitely makes me consider leaving for another network.

Im back to mean rom. my 3g speeds were down to the floor with this mod. like 10-20 kbps. it was horrendous.
Everytime i use a aosp rom, my mms barely works, the 3g is flakey, and i have bluetooth connectivity issues. I miss my original evo 4g!
Thanks for the mod for the mms fix :good:. it does work if anyone was wondering. You just have to put up with slower 3g speeds and deal with all the other bugs that an aosp rom comes with unfortunately.
DC here just did a speed test with these APNs and got 884kbps DL and 748kbps UL. I did not do one beforehand though.
That sounds good. Especially considering I haven't used the APNs yet, and get this

Unfortunately this did not work for me ... I still get a constant "Downloading" after receiving a MMS.
I can confirm this works. Just wanted to add on a few things that I had to figure out on my own, though. This guide was nice but it made things a little confusing at times.
HOW I DID IT:
Install APN Backup & Restore from the playstore.
Convert APN Backup & Restore to a system app by downloading /system/app mover from the playstore.
Open /system/app mover and click "APN Backup & Restore". Click YES when it asks you to move to /system/app/. Reboot phone.
Open up APN Backup & Restore. Go to menu and click Disable ICS Check. Click Backup APNs and enter name or press OK.
Download the APN config (right click save as) and save it to the folder "ApnBackupRestore" found on your sdcard0 (phone storage).
Open back up APN Backup & Restore and click Delete APNS.
Click Restore APNS and select "sprint-mms-fixed-apns.xml".
Reboot phone.
Done. Try it out.
If this doesn't working out for you then try disabling the auto retrieve feature found in settings so you can manually retrieve your pictures when you're in a good area.

The screen tears are annoying, however I despise sense ROMs. Contact picture size is pitiful, crap multi tasker pane, horrible lock screen etc.. I can deal with some screen tears haha.

Sorry to quote such a long post, but.....can't all this be done just manually thru root explorer.
Also, isn't the 'delete all APNs' step a bit,..risky or bad.

I don't see how there would be a risk in deleting your apns. If you back them up as instructed you can restore them at another point in time. All that happens is you lose internet for a few seconds while you're making the swap .
