Erase SD Card?! - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok so I wanted to start fresh on my SD card, through the year it just gathered too much crap. Well on Gingerbread it used to just format it. Well on this ICS crap, the only option was to erase SD card. Well I did and now it won't remount. It just keeps saying safe to remove SD card. So I removed it and put it back in after taking the battery out of course and still nothing!

If you have a card reader format it on your computer.

Format in card reader on PC, or use 4Ext Recovery and format within recovery.

When would one want to format the SD Card?

When I boot into recovery prior to flashing a Rom, I notice the option to format the SD Card, but I am not sure when it is a good idea to do so. Thanks for your replies.
The average user will probably never use it.
Over time the card will fill with meaningless junk files from things you've installed to scripts you've ran and can cause problems (yes it happens).
I'd guess it's mostly there for those that partition though.
The only time I've ever formatted an SD card was when I was selling someone a device with the SD card included. If you do format it, for whatever reason, make sure you back your files up(pictures, music, etc) to your PC.
Edit: Now that I think about it, I had to format an SD card in my Droid 1 when the apps2sd partition tanked and started corrupting files on the SD card.

That makes sense, thanks for your prompt replies.

[Q] Friend did not power off phone before removing sdcard. Is the sdcard damaged?

I turned off my phone, took out the sdcard, gave it to my friend.
My friend inserted it on her phone, viewed some files that were in it, then pulled the sdcard out without turning off her phone.
Does that damage the sdcard? Some apps are definitely missing, and maybe some pictures too, not sure.
What to do?
Thanks guys!
Not necessarily, but can be. Use some file recovery software.

how do i format the sdcard using my phone? do I go to recovery mode?
Don't you want to recover the files before formatting?
Anyhow, you can format it from recovery as well as settings-> storage -> format memory card.
I already made a back up. thanks!!!
Happened with me a lot of times.
Go to settings -> SD Card and phone storage -> Unmount sd card -> Stay on that screen and wait for 5 mins
If you do not get a notification regarding the unmounting of your sd card, switch off your phone, take out your sd card, boot into recovery, insert your sd card, try browsing some files on your sdcard (I hope you understood what I want to say), switch on your phone and see whether you sd card works. My card worked almost everytime using this process. I dont know how? But it just works.
PS - If your sd card still doesnt work then you will need to format it.

If you don't unmount your sd card before removing it, it can get corrupted.
A simple indicator of that is you won't be able to install any app untill the card is mounted in your device.
Happened to me a lot when i was new to ACE
Make sure to unmount before removing, or you can just turn it off and then remove, your choice

microSD CARD partitioning causes problems?!!

I have used partitions on my old rooted phone where I thought the sd card had crashed because of partitioning it. Now I have removed the partition and I am still getting problems. Then I formatted my whole micro sd card using windows. Whenever I insert my sd card into windows via my phone, it asks me to format it.
Why has micro sd partitioning wrecked my sd card???!!

I am also getting the bad zip file error on android! I am beginning to believe that partitioning has destroyed my sd card permanently!

Phone asking me to format SD Card!

My phone is asking me to format my sd card out of the blue. I have a 32gb Kingtson, I have a lot of crucial data. I have not yet formatted the sd card. I've tried conventional ways of getting my data like using GETDATABACK FAT32 but it did not work. I have used other but no to avail.
Does anyone know what is the best method to recover files from a sd card that was working but now it is not?
Go to settings>storage and unmount microsd. Remove the microsd feom ur phone. Use a microSD card adapter ... a full size sd card that u can put ur microsd card into and will fit into your pc. Click and drag important data from microsd onto desktop. Then fat32 format the microsd and reload the data onto it. Done.
Or u can upload all data to dropbox and then format amnd reinstall... but it may take a while.

SD Card unexpectingly stopped working.

Was using my wifi tether while phone was plugged in and when I checked my phone, I seen the white sd card with the exclimation point and when I pulled down my notification bar, it said "Removed SD Card, Insert a new one." I put it in another phone, said same thing. I put it in my laptop, and Windows didn't even recognize it in any way. When I put it back in my phone, it said "Damaged SD Card, Reformat needed" or whatever. When I tried to reformat it, it said it couldn't be reformatted. When I rebooted into 4ext to reformat it, it kept giving me errors that it couldn't be reformatted.
I'm running Dastin's WILD FOR THE NIGHT 2/15 4.2.2 rom. My SD card is a Lexar High-Speed Class 10 32GB.
All I'm trying to do is recover everything that is/was on it. I have a feeling that that isn't possible. I had 4GBs of music, about 10GBs of downloads, custom roms, etc.
If anyone knows how to recover my files or format the sd card without errors please tell me. Thank you.
I had the exact same problem once. no card reader was recognizing it. what i did was go to recovery and format the card from there. I remember i had to choose 4ext partition option or something like that to get it to format
Whenever I go into 4ext, it says sd card can't be mounted. The only way I got it to do anything was I used a friends desktop computer and it recognized it in My Computer, yet when I click Open, it says it's not accessible. I right clicked on it, did the full format, and at the end it said it couldn't be formatted. I went to properties and the disk is blue and it says 0kbs in all sections. I tried data recovery software, partition wizards, etc and no go. Can I send it to Lexar and have them do something about it?

Go into recovery and then select make sd-ext4 partition option. It should format the card. then afterwards you can remove the ext partition by reformatting
What if the sd card isn't recognized by any computer? And I have data recovery software that "claims" it can restore your data even after a format. Is that even possible?

I was once able to restore around 90 percent of my images on a corrupted card but i have never seen a card restore all the data on a card. It's all your luck
I had app backups, game data, videos, and about 4gbs of music. Will it restore them or images only?

Re:
Due to corruption your memory card stopped working and need to repair corruption issue, go for Kernel for windows data recovery software for the recovery of your data from the corrupted sd memory card.
Well i put the sd card in an action replay sd card adapter (the one that you take the bottom off and it turns into a usb drive) and I was able to bring up everything that was on it. I backed it up and formatted it with win7 partition wizard or something, and I put it in a regular sd adapter and I got nothing. For some reason it only works with the AR USB adapter. How can I get the sd card to work in my phone now? I'm thinking I can just buy another 32GB (or 64) since I was able to get everything off of it, I'm just trying to avoid that so I can try and save this one still.
