Safest way to move from 2.1 to ICS? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Stock everything 2.1 . Last three days my phone has been bricked due to failing at making the switch (pretty sure it was bootloaders), so I want to make sure I get everything right this time.

Seeing as my phone is a relic, it's not very active, this also wasn't specific to my phone.

I'm trying to help you help yourself. A thread full of posters reporting no issues should be enough to show you it's a decent and safe app. The worst that will happen is you'll have to reflash, so make sure you're backup just in case, but how many users in that thread have claimed they've had to.

You're the type of person who shouldn't be rooting their phone in the first place... You didn't search very hard at all...
And no, rooting does not give you "free" apps. It suddenly doesn't make the Market free, or unlock your phone. Rooting gives applications access to the operating system. e.g. tether, Titanium Backup, etc.
Use Titanium Backup to save all your apps & data.
Ah thanks, the main stuff is more controll after rooting + themes.

The easy way is to flash a custom ROM via Odin.
Try Litenin ROM it'll get rid of all the Orange crap they have put in to your phone
Thats some nice original development you got going on there
Reported.
Q&A is this way

Updating rooted/kerneled

Hello,
Aint sure if this question is already answered, I searched but didnt find it immeaditly, so i thought it was better to make a topic, So i could also ask a few questions more,
So i have a S3 international for a while now,
And i was thinking to leave the stock rom alone, But rooting, Doing clockwork recovery and a new kernel on it, I am think to get Perseus.
So the question is, if i do this, will all my apps be gone from my Phone and will it be cleaned up?
Also i wanted to ask if i do this, and theres a update from Samsung, How do i update it? Just click on it? will anything be erases/bricked?
Also i seen that the Toolkit (for root and recovery etc) is for 4.1.2, but i recently had a update XEMC2, but the kernel name is still the same, Is it safe to use this toolkit?
Thanks for reading this post,
Best regards,
DrLuigi.

So if i understand you,
It will be cleaned up, all apps will be gone?
And i will only be able to update with KIES, and not the one installed on the phone updater?
and it isnt safe to use the toolkit due it doesnt have EMC2?
i think it might be safe due wll, Its still the same kernel etc, I heard the only change they made was some bugs?

I never updated with KIES, is that like, getting your S3 in Download mode or something?
Due i have like no idea why the stock downloader wouldnt work,
When you update, Is the ROOT and kernel gone or? I think the kernel, due it probably will force the samsung one inside,

Well probably we will still get Keylime after Jellyban 4.2.1, Since well, Samsung would be crazy if they would let down the Note 2 and S3 users,
Wich are like millions.
It would be actualy good for there name if they satisfy there customers, and get them a even better name when talking about updating there devices,
Well thats my opinion atleast.
I dont think they would let 40 (it was 40 million right? ) million users down on updates.
