[Q] full recovery and flash problems - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok ill try explain what I did 1st.
I made full back up with ROM Manager saved on my PC and backed up EFS partition with EFS PRO
Then I flashed my ROM with ROMOW Extreme_3 after that IMEI = ok and signal showing = ok but "not registered on network"
Ok I thought big deal I’ll gonna recover from my backup and all gonna be ok but.... after backup exactly same "not registered on network" - WTF!?!?!?!
I gave a phone to my m8 he connected it to BOX and said NVM is corrupted and even if I can see my IMEI on my phone it’s actually not there on BOX it was showing “0000000”. – got fixed.
And then I repeated same mistakes again just with different ROM....and he fixed again... etc....
So any suggestion how to back up I mean proper back up?

Backup EFS folder .
Backup system and data vai Nandroid .
Backup apps with Titanium Backup .
Thats the usual method .

Has anybody tried this efs back-up method on i900?

Has anybody tried this i9000 efs back-up method on the i9100.In theory it should work.It seems super simple so would be good to use.Im mainly asking if anyones done the back-up as they state in the video at the bottom that to restore you only need to copy/paste/overwrite the back-up folder with a root explorer so am lookin so an easy safe and simple way to back-up to phone and PC.If it works then it would also help alot of other people out.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=881162
here is the link given in the video for the rar file from the MobileTechVideo site
http://www.mediafire.com/?w5oxsdo6r53ou1s
As i said just the back-up and not the restore or generic imei cos its not the same model so maybe only the video needs to be watched. So basically a 14min video that you only need to watch about 6min.Not much time to eat pop-corn.Sorry
EDIT:Crap,Ive just realised Ive put this in Q&A and not General."MODERATOR PLEASE!!"
and secondly Ive spelt i9100 wrong!!
just incase anyone wants to know why i havnt tried it myself its cos my phones at the service centre
I just use HellcatDroid's HC-kTool to backup my EFS folder.
It can be found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1182922, just press backup and you have a backedup efs folder .

My phone is in the service centre because of this app.Im not sure if it was me or what went wrong.I pressed the back-up button and made a back-up and after a flash started to have problems with conectivity so i hit the restore button. It opened a warning saying that it was a dangerous process and asked if i wanted to continue,I hit yes and everything went to the ****ter. That little round no connection symbol appeared in the top right hand corner and sim was not recognised.Typed code to check IMEI and it had disapeared.Went into efs file in the root of my phone and it was wiped completely clean. Not one single thing inside.Same with the back-up on internal-sd.Seems that the restore had formated my efs folders root and back-up.No idea what happened so know im a mission to find other options although i do like the KTool cos its so simple to use.Maybe it was just me and not the app.Not sure.

EDIT:Maybe it would have worked if i was on his kernel but it says that you dont have to be so i dought that was the problem.

[Q] whats happened?

just updated my rom and was messing about with kernels and now my phone hhas gone odd.
it works fine on vodafone(original network) but wont work on any other network.
it always shows signal but with any sim other than voda i get emergency calls only.
so iv had a look about on it and my imei has changed to what i believe is a test imei or something. i have restored my backed up efs and it hasnt changed. its still the same.
i have now put it back to official samsung firmware 2.3.6 then rooted it with cf-root kk5
baseband- i9100xxkl1
kernel- [email protected]#2
build number- gt-i9100-eng 2.3.6 gingerbread xxkl1 test-keys
any ideas?

i wasnt asking how i fix it, i was asking why its happened?
as in why did restoring my efs still leave me with this odd imei number?
If we knew how it happened it would not be a problem .All that is known is that it is a result of flashing roms .
jje
Flashing the ROM has corrupt your EFS file that contains your phones IMEI number therefore changing it to a false one.Thats why we do backups. Not overly common but common enough. The problem now is to get back your original IMEI by correcting the EFS folder.WHAT type of backup do you have?TAR,ZIP,e.t.c.?
Odia has a good rep at getting phones back up and running.Worth a try.
thats the thing. i understand flashing rom can somehow corrupt the backed up efs but it cant when my back up was on my laptop.
the backup i used was an .img file generated by hellcats ktool app. i also restored it with this app.
i also have the .tar.gz efs backups that are generater automatically but how do i flash this, other than adb. id use adb but it seems to have got a little confussed on my laptop, and dont ever work since i got my sgs2 :/

Heres a link.give this a try.Its an EFS backup tool.Make a backup of your current(wrong)EFS folder in img or tar.It will appear in a folder called EFSProBackup. You need this folder to restore.Open the folder and delete the backup.Put your original backup you made that you have in your PC inside and use the restore option.this program supports backup/restore of img and tar formats so you could try and use it to restore your original ones.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1308546
download the release zip
Id try the img restore first:the option to format current EFS before restore is at your own risk. Please read carefully.

efs folder keeps overwriting with generic IMEI

Hi all, I have a galaxy s2 i-9100 which is rooted and running Cyanogenmod 9.
Unfortunately I managed to somehow corrupt my /efs folder and my IMEI number is now the dreaded 004999010640000. (I cannot make any calls or access my mobile network)
In the process of screwing up my /efs folder i also lost the entire contents of my SD card that stored my efs backup.
I do however have a backup of my nv_data.bin file stored on my computer, which I placed back in my /efs folder, deleted the backups etc, rebooted my phone, and it restored my IMEI.
However, as soon as I reboot my phone/switch it off again, next time I boot I'm back at square one and have lost my IMEI number.
Is anyone aware of any way to stop this from happening - or have I got to live with this forever? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
as u said u have ur nv_data
try this

[Q] EFS deleted on my galaxy s3

hi everybody.
I have an issue with my device, I was on the root directory and I deleted the folder EFS.
Now I have a different IMEI 04999010640000 and I can't connect to my provider.
I was looking in a different forums and they said that the imei it's a custom provided by the device and I have to use a box for restore the imei and the other things of that folder. please, can someone help me.
Can you first read the faqs and guides and use search instead of asking the same question day after day after day.
Basic is restore your backed up EFS folder .
Fail to read the guides first and no EFS backup tough **** pay for a service centre repair .

I made a mistake,I didn't wanted erase that file
anyways... there is first time for everything... Please check in your internal and external card that if you have the backup of EFS. Sometimes when you flash a new ROM specifically a custom rom, some of them backs up the efs partition automatically. so try to find out if there is any back up of efs on any one of your memory cards.

I look on my internal and external memory, I don't see any backup .
That is not good.. The only way is to send it to Samsung service centre
If my post had helped you than please press Thanks button. It might be very little for you but VERY BIG for me.

[Q] Besides EFS backup what else?

Before Installing Recovery / Rom what should be backed up (except personal data) ?
I heard EFS should be backed up and made into several copies.

you are right.
First thing after root = backup your efs folder
Then after you got a custom recovery, making a nandroid backup is always a good idea.
and yes personal data is also good to be saved.
in addition i highly suggest you to read the stickies
after that happy flashing

Well I rooted the device.
Used kTool(Verification screenshot: http://oi57.tinypic.com/s2gl01.jpg) to backup the EFS, got two files: efs.IMG & efs.tar.gz one is 20MB the other is 0KB this is normal? Cause the verification said there's an error of some sort..
I have SuperSU as Root controller, this ok?
