[Q] Jelly Bean Updates - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

New guy here.
Apologies if the answer is around, I've been toying around this site and others but can't find it.
I have updated my SGS 3 (GT-I9300) to Jelly Bean from an official update release. However, I rooted it using CF-Auto Root.
How do I update again in the future, since I can't do OTA's anymore?
Regards,
Erich

In the future you'll update using Odin or MobileOdin.
You'll have to manually download the update file from samsung-updates.com or by using CheckFusDownloader and apply the update using Odin or MobileOdin.
If you choose to use MobileOdin, you'll be able to keep your phone rooted.
If you use Odin, you'll have to re-root everytime.
there is a free version of MobileOdin in the PlayStore.
Now that you know what to look for, use the search tool to get better answers.

Simple update method .
Download firmware via CHECKFUS .
Flash via Odin .
Reroot via Odin .

Kies firmware upgrade Question

I get this message from my Kies "Your device does not support software upgrading via Kies".
Current Firmware version : I9100ZSKI3/I9100ZSKI3/I9100XXI3/I9100ZSKI3
What should I do to get this SGS2 working with Kies auto upgrade firmware ?
My SGS2 product code : GT-I9100LKAKOR
thanks
Did you flash a modem from another firmware, is your rom an offical one?
You have two option download firmware from link in forum and flash using odin.
Flash correct modem for current firmware and try updating via kies..

This firmware is package of PDA, modem, csc in 3 files.
Honestly you can forget upgrading through kies and use Odin or mobile Odin.
There is an app called checkfus which will tell you if there is an upgrade for your carrier in your region.
Then from intratechs thread you can download whatever official firmware you want and flash using Odin or even better mobile Odin which will root the firmware at the same time as you flash it.
I know I haven't answered your question but Odin/mobile Odin in my opinion are better options.

As ace of Clubs said you can wait for Kies to upgrade whenever and its not a guarantee that you get updates even on original firmware and once you mess with firmware its pot luck as to Kies updating .

How to Decode original firmware?

I was able to copy the original hc 3.2 firmware from my mac. The thing is its a .enc file.
How can i make it into a odin flashable file? I want to go back to stock so i can get updates thru kies again just incase ics come.
TIA for the help.

Original firmwares are available in sammobile.com and sampro.pl
You can download the ODIN flashable files from there.
Regarding your question, have no idea how to convert .enc file to ODIN flashable.
I already did that and flashed it with odin but it still cant update with kies. Thats why i wanted to use the firmware i was able to grab from my mac so that it would be updateable thru kies, i hope.

Are you sure that the update is available for your tab?
Can you please share your firmware version and country here so others can help you.

Software update

I have just received a notification to update software. I downloaded the update & phone booted into recovery but failed to install update.
Could that be because I have rooted the device ? what is the solution for this ?
Because of the root you can't update normally. I'm not sure if you can take the update what your phone downloaded and flash it yourself.

An option is to choose a custom ROM and follow its updates as they will most likely include important updates in their future versions.
You can only update with kies as your rooted, root will removed after update so you will have to re install.

The only thing stopping you installing these updates is the custom recovery, not root itself. You could use mobile ODIN to flash a stock recovery from a stock rom, and then you can get official updates.
Or like many on here, just wait for word on a new update, download it from Sam Mobile and use ODIN (or mobile ODIN) to flash

I was rooted with Chainfire. All I wanted was OTA updates.
Very simply update your phone with the latest chainfire root - 6.4 i believe (just install over the existing chainfire if this is how you're rooted). Install the OTA's. Reflash again with 6.4 and you'll have your up to date OTA's and rooted. All took 10 minutes

I am rooted with CF v6.1 & whenever phone reboots to recovery to install updates it fails. Why would it work with v6.4 ?!
is there a way I can download the updates only on the PC & flash them with oden ? on sammobile, they have the updates integrated in a ROM.

[Q] Android newbie. Need a simple help.

Okay first of all as the title says, I'm new to the android OS. I successfully rooted my I9300 4.0.4 by reading and using the toolkit 5.0. So now I'm rooted with stock ICS. My question is, will I still be able to update into jelly bean build LJ4 via OTA or Kies? Will someone please enlighten me on this one. Thanks in advance.
Friend i think when we root ota update is blocked.but yes you can update it via Samsung kies.but you will loose root .
Also you can get yourlatest firmware (jelly bean or whatever) from samfirmware and flash it.

OTA: no
Kies: yes but you will loose root, hence re-root
Sammobile: download and flash via Odin, you will loose root, hence re-root
Sammobile: download and flash via Mobile Odin, you can keep root (pro version)
Hey thanks for the quick response for the both of you. Will try on kies first then sammobile if I'm not succesful. Will be any complications regarding your suggestions? Are those firmware from sammobile official?

yes, sammobile has official versions as well as leaks (marked with a orange sign), hence make sure you get the correct version.
There is also a neat guide to flash a rom in the stickies incl. a video.
Also you can try an option called "ota survival" in super user app.
But it do not works for all devices.

is it safe?

hi XDA! just want to ask is it safe to update if your rooted s3 via kies? will it be unroot your device? or does it affect it in such way? thanks more power!

As long as the ROM & CSC are correct you can update a rooted phone through Kies, as far as I am not wrong, whereas you will loose root and have to re-root. What is not working is the OTA update if you are rooted.
Hence the easiest solution is to download the ROM via sammobile or XDA and flash it via Odin or better Mobile Odin (to keep root).

No, you can't. I've tried myself and it doesn't work.

Yes, you can update a rooted phone through Kies as long as the csc is correct. You will lose root though, but other than that it's safe.
thanks guys for immediate response.I think i will just use odin to maintained rooted. my only problem is i am not sure what guide to use and which is safer? although i research myself through i am just confused so many guides in using odin. my phone is GT - I9300 android version 4.1.1 with a baseband ver: i9300XXDLIB. i just want to update this to 4.1.2 if possible via odin to maintain rooted. If you guys can help me out which guide to follow that will maintain rooted and safe that will be much appreciated!
thanks a lot!

As I mentioned, Mobile Odin is the easiest way as you just select the rom and it flashes incl. root injection. For Odin, simply download the rom you would like to flash (e.g. stock rom from sammobile or prerooted from XDA's general section), and follow the usual steps (e.g. there are easy videos to follow on YouTube & there are many guides in the general section). If you chose to flash a rom that is not yet rooted you will need to flash CF-Auto-Root of CF-Root again.

got it! another question if you don't mind, can i use stock rom using odin without unrooting my device? some people say that if you try to flash your device with official stock rom might unroot phone? is this true or just using odin will prevent your phone from unrooting? no matter what rom you would use. thanks in advance!

there are two ways:
(1) Odin (desktop version): if you flash a stock rom (normal version, not rooted), it will be not rooted, hence you have to root again
(2) Mobile Odin (Adroid Play Store): if you flash a stock rom (normal version, not rooted), you have an option to inject root and directly root it in the process of flashing the rom

I see, the mobile odin i guess is suited for me. since i dont want to unroot my device i just want to update it.
you can always reroot it afterwards. Or better yet, flash a prerooted ROM
