[Q] Android locked my SD Card - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was backing up files and now the sd card is permanently "write protected." I cant format and cant write to it but the data is still there. There is no lock switch on a micro SD card so that isnt it. Is there a way to get the card unlocked?

Have you tried placing it in a Full Size Adapter with the slide Lock on the side ? Then trying to format it. There is an Article HERE that better illustrates what I mean.

I had the same problem. Windows had problem with formatting it, but Ubuntu did it and now Win see it as "unlocked" too. Made copy of files and format it via adapter on any linux (i think)

I used both the adapter and usb mounting. When I mount with USB for some reason it lets me delete and copy over files but after disconnecting it reverts back to all the same files from before. Its not the lock switch, its something Android did like password protection

I have exactly the same problem.
Did you already solved it?

SD Card - unrecognized filesystem or blank

So I rooted and flashed XtrSense, and thought it would be great if I had a large micro SD card. So I picked up a 32gb card off ebay. Now my first problem is I'm not sure if its a real 32gb or just a 8gb that someone hacked to make it show as 32gb, but thats beside the point for right now.
I've always had a problem when I plug my phone into my computer over usb, where if I move the cable just one bit, it disconnects then reconnects quickly then says that the device would preform faster in a USB 2 slot (all of mine are USB 2).
Unfortunately this happened when I was transferring music and when I unplugged from the computer it said my SD card had errors. I used the prompt to format it, and my card worked fine for a while.
Well that same scenario happened again last week and for some reason I decided to format it using Amon recovery. Now I'm afraid my SD card is corrupt because when I start my phone it says the card is blank or has an unrecognized filesystem. Whenever I try the format option the phone gives, it does nothing. Any ideas?
I can't help you with the formatting issue (try formatting FAT32 through windows?), but I have had the USB intermittent connection problem. Easily solved by using a standard usb cable or charger (not the modified one provided by HTC) and using a small stylus to bend the shorter of the two long sides of the plug slightly outward.
Thanks for the tip on the cord! I'll try that as soon as I find my cord.
And I can't format the card in windows because windows doesn't recognize that anything has been plugged in
And just for clarification you mean the bottom on this picture?

Can you format it through a card reader? Also, can't you format it through the settings | storage settings menu?
Yes, the bottom where you have the carats. there's usually a seam right in the middle that is easily bent. don't bend too hard or far. just a fraction of a centimeter will tighten up the connection

Going through settings and selecting format does nothing. I click the button and it still says its a blank or unsupported filesystem

if the phone reformatted it then it should be blank.
now mount it to the computer and put what you want on it
You did it wrong in amon_ra. Reformat in amon but this time set first two settings to zero and the remainder fat32. Hope this helps.

So I followed your response and wiped EXT on sd then partitioned it with both settings=0 but I still get the same error message: "sd blank or unsupported filesystem"
EDIT: So I tried to do it in command prompt and it said unrecognized disk label. So i tried to change it but whatever I type it says invalid token
Edit 2: And by command prompt I mean IO installed android adb and foolowed a guide online to try and format my SD card that way
You may try this step by step guide that helped me before: recover data from corrupted SD card
hope this helps.

[Q] Dell Streak radomly deletes files after USB connection

I recently upgraded my memory card on my Streak to a 32gb class 10.
When trying to put files (pictures and videos) on the card via the USB cable the files appear to have been copied okay, but when trying to access the files on the Streak they are either missing or corrupted.
I reformatted the card in the Streak and tried again. This had the same effect.
I transferred some files via skydrive and they worked fine. But the next time a accessed the card via USB, the files disappeared again, even though I didn't access the folder in question.
This is the second card I have tried, so I assume that the card is not the problem.
I'm running stock 2.2.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
What OS are you using?
Even though the file copy may appear complete it may not be. Make sure you use whatever steps are appropriate for your OS to eject or unmount the SD card after copying.
Using Win 7 x64...
I'll have another go and let you know.
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA App
I've tried again making sure that I've selected Turn off USB storage from the handset and safely eject from the PC. It still happens.
The strange thing is that it even affects folders that I didn't access whilst connected to the PC (it either empties or deletes the folders).
Totally stumped on this. Could it be a problem with the card? If so, has anyone used a 32gb card that works that they can recommend?
You have tried at least 2 cards, but have you tried a different PC. Is it possible you may have "something" running on the PC causing this.

Make sure that you do those in the correct order. Safely remove from PC first, then turn off USB storage on the phone.
If you can read the card with no problems make a backup and then format the card in the phone. I have seen a lot of cases (and not just with Streaks) where issues were caused by using a card that had not been formatted while in the phone.
Where did you buy the card from? I ask because this sounds a lot like the symptoms you see with faked cards that are really much smaller than the 32GB they claim.

Hmm. I got it from Ebay. It does show as 31.2gb in windows.
This is the second card I've had from this supplier (I sent the first back because of the problems with the streak as listed above). As I had the same probs with the 2nd card I assumed the device must be at fault.
Are you sure the card is legit? you should hook it up to a card reader and loading +20gb of data and seeing if it's good
I tried transferring a load of files to the card and it stopped after about 3gb. Some of the folders were empty.
I tried reformatting in windows and noticed it was FAT32. The card will not format as NTFS.
I guess this means that the card is duff?
it definitely sounds like you got a fake, those are classic signs it's a fake

i9300 UMS without rooting?

Hello everybody,
is there any way to have full access to the SD-Card in the Galaxy SIII (the extcard, not the phone's memory card) over USB without having to root the phone? The UMS-workaround with easyUMS doesn't work unless the phone is rooted.
Thanks in advance
No you have to Root.

That's right, but reading from the extsdcard is not the problem, only writing directly into files on it. Meaning, any file I open from there is opened read-only and this is annoying. Makes my wonder, what for do I have a card slot and a card, when I cannot use it as a mass storage?!

I can use the MTP option as a normal USB drive..no problem in reading or writing to the card..are you sure your drivers are correctly installed..

yes, i am sure... how comes you can write on the card? We're talking about the extSdCard, right? I can write files on it, all right, I cannot write into the files, i.e. they are opened as read-only.
Yes, that is a restriction in the MTP protocol; it can only transfer whole files, not parts (updates, changes).
Some apps are not able to work with that and will report read-only.
The easiest fix is to use, e.g. SMB Fileshare (which unfortunately requires root) whcih allows you to even mount the phone as a (pseudo)real drive via Wifi network without the need of a USB cable.

ps. does exist an application that cancel all unused application files in the sdcard? thanks again.
1 and 3 sound like a bad sd card or card reader in the phone. The rest sound like an OS bug, which a factory reset should hopefully clear up.

What do you mean "cancel?"

Well, normally when you connect the USB cable and choose to connect the USB storage then the SD card becomes unavailable to the phone but the computer can then access it. Both the computer and the phone cannot access the SD card at the same time... I will spare you the technical reasons but you should know that this is normal. After you are done copying files with the computer then you must turn off this USB storage mode so the phone can access the SD card again and then it will see all your music and pictures again (all these are stored on your card by default).
This should all be fixed OK by a reboot of the phone though in any case. Are you sure you rebooted the phone completely? maybe you should try to remove the battery once?
If you've done all that then you can try to repair the SD card by taking it out of the phone and using micro sd to SDHC adapter and inserting it directly into a computer then using windows to run a chkdsk on it.
hi,
i've done all you said properly, you know the problem came out because there was a differente behavior than in the past.
i remove securely the phone from pc and then is not accessible,
i didn't tried to chdsk the sdcard i'll try, but it sounded strange to me because its brand new.
i also tried to contact htc , they said " try to reboot, or try to remove the battery and the sd and start the phone again, the problem wasnt gone.
thanks for the advice.

Well if it's just gotten corrupted then you can just reformat the sd card. You'll want to backup all your data first so if you can't do that from the USB connection to the PC then you'll need to insert it directly into a pc. Once you've formatted it you can put your backed up data back on the card and put it back in the phone and after a while it will find your mp3s again. If it's truly a bad sd card then the reformat won't help.
Do you have another sdcard? The one that came with the phone or any other? Try putting some mp3s and photos on it and then put that in your phone. If your phone recognizes the photos and mp3s then maybe your current sdcard is the problem. And can you tell the the format of your sdcard? Is it NTFS or exFAT or FAT32? If it is UHS-1 card there is a good chance that it is in exFAT. To make it work on Evo 3d, convert it to FAT32 .

Try and reboot again.
If still an issue, you can either lose your data and try and format it int he phone, or get an adaptor and plug it into a computer
I tried nothing works.. I think after I installed the update of clean master and reebooted and the problem apeared

If you connect it to a computer it may recognize. If you try more than one Operating System, and more than one Adapter, it may read the SD card. The phone is lease likely to recognize it if there is corruption.
As a last resort, you may have to format the SD card, but it will completely erase your data. To do that find the drive letter for it on the computer (usually F: ) and right click, select format, and leave everything but choose FAT32 as the filesystem.
You can just replace the SD card for now, and try to get a friend or a technician to help you recover it from that one.
