[Q] macbook made sdhc card unreadable- fix? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys-
So I'm loving my new Note 2, and hating my formerly loved Macbook Pro. The latest in a series of fails is this: I have a 64gb sandisk sdhc card that was working in the Note just perfectly, but the macbook could not read it via its card reader (or any other way, really). Like a fool, I tried reformatting it in the mac's disk utility. That failed halfway through, and the card will no longer mount in my Note 2. Thus, I can't format it there, at least in any way I know of.
If anyone has ideas on how I might be able to reformat the card, it would be lovely. I heard about a windows app called bootlce, but I don't have bootcamp set up right now (and my only windows copy is xp, not sure if that would see the card either). Anyway, thanks for any advice.

Bootice is one possibility, otherwise search Google for partition managers. If you have a custom recovery (Ext4 or CWM) on your Note then you can, possibly, use that to reformat the card, otherwise you will need to borrow a PC/Laptop with Windows or Linux and use that instead. Apple products do things their own way and you can never guarantee that they won't screw up if you need compatibility for another non-iOS device.

Thanks, I'll have a look around for those. I wonder too if AT&T can reformat them... probably wishful thinking.

Uhhhhhhhhg. I went through the process of installing Windows XP on my Macbook Pro, got all the updates, drivers, etc. that might be associated with the SDHC standard, and ran Bootice, and formatted the card. The best I get now is the card coming up as being 1 megabyte in size. Formatting to exFAT doesn't work either. I think my laptop may have just ruined this card.
Unless anyone has any other ideas, I'll probably be taking advantage of my warranty.

# dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdcard
This will blank the card totally, MBR and all partitions inclusive. After this, you can recreate the partitions using you Android device, I'd guess. Note that you have to find out the device "/dev/sdcard", it's most likely named something else. After insert, the "dmesg" command will probobly tell you. Using the wrong device, and you'll blank some other disk in you Mac, so be warned.
All this done command line in the terminal window in MacOS.
Edit: You may see devices such as "/dev/sdcard, /dev/sdcard1" etc, and in this case you should use the shortest name, i.e. the one without the number. Else you'll only blank the partition, not the entire card.

Thanks for the idea. I will try that in the future if I have trouble again, but this time I ended up just returning the card. I probably tried 10 different formatting programs, including the official one from the sdcard website. Onward and upward!

[Q] Can I use my SDcard after Goldcard?

hello fellow hackers. Today i hacked my HD2 to install Android using a goldcard. Everything went well. No i have the problem that neither my Milstone, nor my HD2 or legend recognize the card. I have formated it a couple of times but no chance. I can use it on windows, and read and write but the cell phones doesnt recognize it. Is my SD card now corrupt? How can i remove the changes that were made?

Dude, why do you want to format it?
If I were you, I would rather buy a new one and keep the old one as an emergency kit
Still, you can try format it using a Partition Tools software.
Good luck
you shouldnt have needed to format it. it should work as a normal sd card when its gold, no problem. how else do you think you managed to copy the leoimg.nbh file onto it?
A card should work as a FAT disk, and still remain gold, until it is formatted (or you accidentally allow that annoying windows 'your disk may have errors' or whatever the hell it says popup to 'fix' it.)
Since you have gone past that stage by now, id say fix the mbr, fresh partition. Give some partitioning software a try, or you can use THIS (post 3) method to clean the mbr, see if it helps.

[Q] Really this easy to create SD Boot disk for Nook Tablet??

Hola, as you can see from my post total I'm totally new to this forum. I recently received a 8gb Nook Tablet (NT) from my kids for my birthday.
I really enjoy the book reading experience but find the app experience less than perfect. I've been an iOS user for a while and have come to expect cheap, free apps to testdrive before purchasing. I understand the way to do this on my NT is to hack the device to allow unfettered access to Android Marketplace / Google Play.
I understand there are a couple of ways to do this.
1) Hack (root?) the internal memory of the NT and load a new ... (ROM? Image? OS?) I think this is what Albertwertz and his root SD card is doing.
2) Use an SD card and boot from the SD card. This does not touch the Nook OS and does not void warranty.
Since I am not really sure what I'm doing, not voiding the warranty seems like a pretty good idea.
One of the Nook dudes at B&N told me about NtoA cards and that sounded like just what I was looking for. However, after doing some research on (mostly) this site, I've learned that the N2A guys are just reselling the work that's being done on this site. I don't think the price is unreasonable, but I'd rather get things working on my own and then donate to the team that did the work.
So, I've been reading all afternoon and think I have an understanding of what needs to be done.
Can it really be this simple?
1- Buy SD card (micro SDHC 4gb)
will class 10 provide any upside? Or is class 4 ok
2- Download Team-B-CM7SD-Alpha-final.img.zip from this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1481826
3- Download win32diskimager-binary.zip from the same post. (hoping there's an installer in the zip)
4- Image the SD card with win32diskimager. (from Vista 32)
5- Power off my NT, insert SD and I should be good to go.
Is it really that simple? I'm not sure what it will look like when I boot into CM7 but I'm assuming I will see something that will allow me to log into my google account and get my app on.
If I'm missing a step, please let me know. Thanks for all the help!
j
Your steps look good to me. There is an installer in the. zip.
You should be okay with a class 4 SD card, that's always what I use. There was a thread somewhere on XDA giving benchmarks for different SD cards and it showed that in some cases, class 4 cards actually performed better.
Don't be worried if you see black screen for an extended time the first time you boot, this is normal.
Yep, it's that easy. Be warned though, if you power on after making the sd card and it boots into stock, power it off and plug it into the wall/PC and see if it boots into cm7, some work without the power, some don't.

If and when a custom recovery comes out for the 8gb nook tablet, I'd definitely consider installing internally. It technically voids the warranty but this things pretty easy to return to stock.

I am kinda surprised at how inexpensive the MicroSD cards are. Does anyone know of a tool I can use to expand the storage partition on the SD Card (after imaging the card with the Team-B image)? I've seen a few people talking about it but everyone does it with Linux. Is there a freeware tool for us Vista or Win7 users?
Also, when I boot from the SD card, do I have access to the internal storage on NT? Or do I need to plan on all my storage going to the card?

I figured I'd take that on after becoming more familiar with the platform and Android OS.
Glad I found this forum to help me through it when I'm ready!
Some reading material
You seem like you're willing to put in the effort to really learn this stuff, so definitely take a look at that link and just read, read, read and read some more when doing this stuff. That guide is a nice place to get familiar with what some of the terms are/what you'd be doing.
As for getting more space on the sdcard, I know others have managed it (I boot internally, so have no experience here). There might be a guide for it, I'll have a look. Hopefully someone can help you out if not.

I don't know about a windows program, but what you can do is make a USB version of ubuntu (linux) which will run ubuntu on your windows machine while the usb stick is in. Just go to ubuntu's download page to learn how to do this.
Then once you have ubuntu you can download gparted and fix the partitions on your sd card with that.
Or there might be a windows program. But having a ubuntu usb stick can come in handy. I have my computer dual booted and i seem to be using ubuntu more and more.

I recommend either MiniTool Partition Wizard or EASEUS Partition Master for Windows, both are freeware. Both are able to extend the 4th partition (user data partition) to consume the remaining unallocated space of your card.
Unfortunately, the NT's actual internal storage is not accessible when running the ROM from SD. The "internal storage" on the SD ROM is represented by the 3rd partition that the Team-B image creates (this partition is formatted as Ext4).

Well, then I definitely need to get a bigger SD card. I guess the internal storage will still be used for books bought through B&N. At least until I try and install a ROM internally.
thanks!

@LoboJim take a look at LiLi for portable Linux installations (http://www.linuxliveusb.com). It's a very easy tool for creating bootable linux thumb drives -- pretty much as simple as plugging in a thumb drive and selecting a distro.
Regarding the internal partition, have you gone in to BN to have it repartitoned? I decided to "let" BN do since I'm still under warrenty. That opened up 8gb for personal use.
I found that EASUS worked for me to re-partition the sdcard.

CWM - can't see SDCard (except under "Install zip from SDCard")

Weird,
Android says my SD card is corrupt and only offers to format it.
Windows says the same.
CWM doesn't, as far as I can see, see it either, EXCEPT when I ask it to install a zip from it... it can see everything on the SD card and installs successfully from it!
Problem is, I need to copy stuff from the card before reformatting it.
Any ideas on how I might do that?
P.S. Yes, it is definitely the SD card and not the internal one
P.P.S. Windows doesn't see the phone when connecting under CWM...should do though shouldn't it. Perhaps that's my problem..?
Thanks.
Are you rooted? If yes, maybe running e2fsck on the command-line will sufficiently recover it to be mounted.
Alternatively you can use Recuva under Windows to find and rescue the files you need, or chkdsk to attempt a repair.
Is it a Fat32 or exFat (Fat64) filesystem and is there any reason such as removing it without ejecting, that could have caused this?

Thanks for the prompt reply.
It is rooted, although I tried to install this e2fsck through CWM and it gave me generic errors. Not being a Linux man I wouldn't feel that comfy with stuff like that anyway though.
The card is exFAT so I think Chkdsk (Win7) won't fix anything IFAIK. Oh, Windows says the card isn't formatted though, so won't do anything.
Recuva is unable to determine the file system.
:-(
I installed CM9 from the card, which then couldn't read it (I didn't know CM9 didn't support exFAT), so I restored my previous backup from the Sammy rom so it would be back to normal. But when it booted up the first time post-restore, it said the card was corrupted.
The kernel is what defines whether a filesystem can be or can't be mounted since it includes the filesystem logic. So replacing the kernel always helps if a ROM cannot mount the filesystem.
(Except for special userland filesystem based on Fuse)
It sounds like the partition table got badly corrupted, either by software or hardware.
I'm sure it didn't give you the output "generic errors". We're here to help guide you through the process if you have not enough knowledge but you'll at least have to try. However I don't know how I managed to type e2fsck, since that one is for Ext2 filesystems which has nothing in common with Fat64. You'll have to use a computer to repair it...
After having plugged in the card, could you please go to the Start menu and type 'diskmgmt.msc', then hit ENTER.
Check if the removable disk is initialized and contains a partition (aswell as what the type of the partition is)
It probably shows an unitialized disk, a disk with a RAW partition or a disk without any partitions.
If that is the case, try http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk
You'll find a reference to a lot of other (free and paid) tools on this page: http://www.hiren.info/pages/bootcd in the Section "Recovery Tools"
Depending of what your data is worth to you, you'll want to get a bitwise backup of the content first so if you screw up during recovery nothing is really lost.
I wasn't being lazy, just keeping in mind how important the data is and how much effort it's worth expending.
The answer was 'not that important' and I ended up formatting it using the very brilliant fat32format.exe (after trying with Windows Pish 7).
It must have been pretty screwed as TestDisk found nothing of any value there at all. (It was RAW in Windows).
But the upshot is I now have a FAT32 formatted 64GB (hopefully, unless it's a dodgy one) SD card that will work on Sammy and AOSP roms.
Thanks for your time, d4f.

cleared media storage, where did everything go??

I*accidentally selected "clear data" in the media storage app on my samsung note, i thought i was just deleting the cache because it said it was only 10mb, but when I try to open the external sd it says its empty, and it wont even detect it on my computer.*is there a way of retrieving everything i had on there? i have much more than 10mb, probably at least 3-4 gigs. please help! thanks
Ouch sorry to hear you hit the wrong button. Right below "clear data" is "clear cache". I can't believe you missed it! Anyways I'm afraid to say your data is more than likely gone.
You can use DiskDigger to recover photos and video from your SD card.
Hope you are able to recover some of your stuff.

Thanks for the suggestion but isn't that app for rooted devices? Mine isn't
..either way, I've tried a few apps to recover some stuff but the problem is that my sd card won't even be detected...
I have a pretty good feeling your data is still there. I've cleared the media storage app's data before as part of a troubleshooting process for Rocket Player, and I've never lost any of my data. First thing I'd try to do is get your SD card recognized again. If your SD card is not accessible from your phone, take the card out and stick it in your PC. Hopefully your PC can see it. I wonder if PC based undelete programs work on SD cards. No harm in trying I suppose.

Yeah the app in the Play Store is for rooted devices.
They do have a PC version but I've never used it before.
I did take a peek at their FAQ and it seems it's free to use, but will nag you to buy it.

that's the main thing i'm trying now is to try to get my sd card detected on my pc, but no luck. I even tested a spare one of i have, and it works fine in my phone and my pc, so weird. has anyone had this happen to them?
Google an app for your PC called testdisk. Sounds like you may have lost the cards partition. If so, testdisk can help find it and rewrite it. If that is what happened, things will reappear after that. From the same site as Testdisk is a flash drive file recovery tool called photorec. These are open source tools, so they require some study on your part to use. Documentation is on the site.

thanks for the info... tried it but no luck, when I get to the point where I need to select a hard drive where the partition might be lost, the sd card is not listed.
Be sure the disk is showing in the PC. In Windows, an unpartitioned disk will not show in Computer as it has no file system to read. But it should show in Disk Management.
You might have to use a laptop or something where a card reader is built in.
There are many combinations of hardware you might be using.
You might have to use Linux, such as a bootable clonezilla or Gparted rescue disk (google) to run your PC to do this. Both have testdisk built in.
well that's the problem, it wont show in the PC...
I am using a PC where the card reader is built in, and I tested another card to make sure it works ok.

Well if the card is mechanically/electrically OK, it will show up in (windows) disk management, but possibly with all of the space "unallocated". Testdisk could maybe recover from that. If it is not there, then it seems to be broken, but a software program couldn't have done that to it.

V10 promo sd card

So, I received my SD card and all that jazz. Was totally excited to use my brand new SD card. Can't write. I've tried on 5 different desktops, 5 different laptops, my phone, phone via usb, and external SD card reader. It will read, but I can't format it and can't write to the card as if it's on permanent lock.
Called LG support to see if they could send me a replacement. They basically told me to **** myself and buy another 200gb SD card.
Thanks, LG.... Thanks...
Edit: Should probably clarify that I've also called the promo number to find out It's now disconnected and tried emailing them. It's been a few weeks and still no response.

@IamPro Negative. No encryption. Also, I don't think a CMD format would work considering that on all of the PC's I used, they all recognized it, but 100% of them would instantly fail format via properties tab.

Is the sdcard formatted exfat or NTFS? The V10 will not read NTFS but windows PCs can. If it is formatted in NTFS please reformat it exfat.

formatting from windows and from command line are 2 entirely different things.
Put the card in the reader...
open a command prompt
Type diskpart
type list disk (locate the number of the flash card)
type select disk (number of the disk which is your flash card
type clean
type create part pri
type format fs=ntfs quick
type active
type exit
then type exit in the command prompt.
I have formatted many flash drives that were thought to be bad because windows would not flash them.
UPDATE: Contacted SanDisk. They are sending me a replacement card.
Thank you for all of your assistance.
