Media scanner refusing to start - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

My other i777's media scanner refuses to start. I tried wiping data/cache/dalvik, unmounting/remounting sd card, manually starting it with apps..nothing will seem to start it. Anybody have any ideas?

What exactly do you mean? Have you tried installing a 3rd party app (for audio for instance) and let those scan your card?
Does the app find anything?

Yes, i tried installing 3rd party music players, they don't pick anything up. I'm gonna check later to see if there is a .nomedia file in the root of the directory.

As stated in my original post..i've already tried manually starting it with apps.
Edit: For anyone who cares, there was a .nomedia file in the directory. I deleted it and that solved the problem.

Mogul will not play *.mp3, no matter what

Hi all,
I tried a search for this and couldn't find it. No matter what I do or try, I cannot get my mogul to play *.mp3 files. I have tried all of the registry settings to MP3File, have tried associating *.mp3 to media player, and have even tried 3 different media players...no luck
What is wrong with my Mogul? Every time I open one, it gives me:
"Cannot play the file. The file is either corrupted or the Player does not support the format you are trying to play."
All I did was transfer a few *mp3 files to my SD card in "My Music," and tried to play them. I just now noticed that the file size is around 160kb. What happened to the ~4mb files size?
Any help would be greatly appreciated
I had the same problem, heres what you have to do.
1. Open up Windows Media Player, click Menu, Update Library
2. When it's all finish, click "My Music" then "All Music" and you don't see anything, right?
3. Click Back and click "Artist", now you see something, now click back again and click "All Music"
I'm not too sure why it does that, but it does.
Hopefully that helps.
I also download TCMP media player. I believe it works for Mp3's as well. It might be a better alternative to WMplayer.

I tried this and it found 4 files which is weird because I only have 3 in my music folder. Tried clicking back after artist, then all music and still nothing.
dalvarez7...I tried TCMP and it wouldn't work.
This is really weird. Thanks for your suggestions. Any more?
are you sure the files aren't corrupted?

They shouldn't be corrupt. All I am doing is transferring them to the Mogul either by ActiveSync or via card reader to the microSD. The problem is I believe during the transfer. For instance, a 5mb mp3 ends up being 160kb once on the card.
I don't understand this.
EDIT: ^^^ Yep, they are corrupt. I just downloaded an mp3 file directly to my phone using its web browser from my server. Guess what? It works... I really don't want to download all of my songs from my server. There has to be a better way.

Official HC on Flyer doesn't find music on SD Card

I've recently installed the official OTA HC Update on my BB 16G WiFi Flyer and noticed that the stock Music App (and any other Music App for that matter) doesn't find any of my music off of the MicroSD Card. Is anyone else having this issue and if so, has anyone found a fix?

Thanks. I did reboot and wait to no avail. In addition, I removed and re-inserted the card. I also copied my music files to the internal storage but still nothing. When the stock music app searches for files, I get a forced close message: "android.process.media has stopped unexpectedly".
I also found the the Gallary App doesn't see any photos stored on the card but when I take new photos with the camera, they do show up. This is strange. Maybe I will format the microSD card and copy the files over again via a USB connection to the Flyer.

If you’re getting forced close message you have another problem.
Did you restore anything after the update?

I have tried reformating the card, rebooting and turning off fastboot. I am out of ideas. I think it is time to try a factory reset. If that doesn't work, I guess it is back to GB.
Did an install of a new Rom last night. Had this problem. Rebooted, still not working. Installed power amp. Could see my music with that app. About an hour later, my stock music found my music. Don't think this is a real fix but sharing my recent experience

Well, I am relatively sure the problem is with HTC's Wifi OTA HC Upgrade. I rolled back to GB and low-and-behold, my sd card music is there as are my photos and videos. I decided to try one more time and ran the OTA Update again...same story, Music and Gallery doesn't find any of my files.
So, one more time...back to GB and that is where I'll stay for now.
try installing a different player ... or leave ur music app running in backgroung for some time hope this might work.... if ur sd is class 4 or less it takes time to find music

PowerAmp does work but there is still the photo and video issue. I let the stock Music app run overnight and it still doesn't work. I also tried 3 different SD cards (class 4, 6 and 10)...no luck. Already back to GB where everything works as it should.
Thanks for the suggestion.

Sorry for the noob question, but the Flyer is my first Android device. Is a roll back only accomplished with a full on ROM flash and subsequent reinstall of apps, etc? Or are you somehow doing an in place roll back similar to the OTA in place upgrades?

Official HC on Flyer does't find music on SD Card
Hi,
Try to clear the cache of the Music App. and the Gallery. At least this worked for me, within no time all my files showed up again
Another option you might try is to use ES File Explorer or a similar program. Go to the folders where your pictures and the music are, and create into this folder a new one. Don't put any files in this folder! Just rename the created folder in .nomedia and reboot with fastbootmode ( in the energy settings) disabled.
I had similar problems once with an Archos 70 Internettablet, and this was the solution that worked for me.....

I really appreciate the last two suggestions. I just don't think I want to go through getting all my apps and data back if I need to roll back again. Maybe someone else that has gone through with the OTA update and has the same problem can try these out.
There is need to roll back or anything like that to use the last 2 options. Just create an empty folder, named .nomedia in the folders where the files are that don't show up in your mediaplayers. You can do this using ES File Explorer ( for free in the Market) or you can hook up your Flyer to your PC, and create the .nomedia files there. Then just reboot...

This maybe isn't useful to you, but I'm having exactly the same problem. I'm running CM10 FXP133 on my Xperia Ray. Wrote a post a bout it here.
So I guess we're both equally desperate. Anybody please help!
/Daniel
Not sure if this is any good (I don't have time to try it out right now), but I found this.

edit: Nope. Sorry. Didn't work. Crap.
Looks like its a problem with the latest nightly.. it was working fine last release...
Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk 2
I partially solved my problem. Something had put a .nomedia file in /sdcard, which quite naturally led to problems. I removed the file and did a new scan and now I got photos in the gallery again. Apollo is still empty though, so I'm kinda pulling my hair here. Done the obvious stuff (reboots, clearing cache, purging app data).
/Daniel
Ha! Found the rest of the solution. Seems the media scanner doesn't scan all folders anymore but just some (found out about it in this post). I moved some of my music to /sdcard/downloads, run a scan and suddenly it's there in Apollo.
Oh, and the .nomedia in sdcard root appeared again. No idea where it comes from, but it seems like a good idea to check for it and delete it once in a while. Strange things happen...
Oh. And sorry to the OP for hijacking this thread. I hope some of my mumbling is useful to you
/Daniel
I reflashed rom again, and now in gallery and apollo, media is showing.
Maybe it's a problem with Rom Manager, because that pushed .nomedia files in wrong folders.

Similar thing happened to me on CM9, Xperia mini. I deleted the .nomedia file and cleared the app data on music players and things are fine now.
My status on this one right now is that scanning mostly works. It refuses to scan some directories though. If I move all my music to /sdcard/music it's scanned, but in /sdcard/subsonic/music where it's always been before it's not. The only big problem with this is that for example /sdcard/ringtones is not scanned. So according to the system I no longer have any custom ringtones. This gotta be a bug, right?
/Daniel
Maybe you could try another music app like winamp. Because there you can do a manually media scan and as far as I know you can choose the folder where it should scan manually, too. Maybe give it a shot

at first i couldn't find my ringtones, put one in sd/ringtones and in the system/media/audio//ringtones
in doing all this i ran SDrescan and rescan media root multiple times.
now i've got two of the same showing up.
one thing the messed me up is that the ringtone filename is not used on the menu.
instead, the ringtone menu is pulling the metadata to tile it.
so I've got my filename 'ringtone.mp3' but it show up in the menu as 'song'

Ok. I also ended up putting my ringtones in /system/media/audio//ringtones which solves my problems. The media scanner still doesn't want to have anything with the ones in /sdcard/ringtones to do. Guess the media service will need some polishing before CM10 is released

Media Scanner Madness!?

I just installed an audio app and it screwed up my media scan, so now, it appears as though the files aren't there (I am pretty sure that they are still there) and no media application can see them. It seems as though the media scanner is trying to run. How long should it take to complete for a couple of gigs of audio files?
So annoying.
Any help would be appreciated. Is there a way to prevent this from happening again? I don't change media much on my external SD card, so I turned off media scanner entirely, but it seems that when I installed PowerAmp, it decided to scan again.

I'll do that after I can finally get the files to show up again. Any tips on that aspect?
This has got to be the Achilles heel of Android as a media platform. No way that media scanning for some audio files on a Class 10 card should take so friggin' long.

I have the rooted version installed, but I'm confused a bit. Do I want to enable it or disable it?
I just want the scanner to finish building the library or whatever got screwed up, so I can play the files again.

Well, realistically how long should that take?
I'm still looking at nothing and I've been at it over an hour.
Okay, so I installed the app and launched it, but still my files don't show up in the apps, like Music Player or Play Music or PowerAMP. They are there, because I can go to the external SD and open them one by one, but the playlists don't show anything.
Any tips would be greatly appreciated.
Would reinstalling the firmware and a full-wipe deal with this issue, or would it be a waste of time?

[Q] Music apps not finding some of my songs

None of the music apps installed on my phone(play music and the default app) can detect most of my music. Only one album shows up even though I have much more than that saved in the exact same place. I can find the files through the MyFiles app and when I select them they play, but they remain gone from my library. I'm currently running 4.4.2
What file type are the songs may I ask? Is it possible they are from ITunes or some other place that may be an unreadable format by those players?

The songs are in mp3 format torrented using the utorrent app. The problem is that when I first downloaded them they showed up in my library but after a few days they went away leaving only one artist in the collection. This has happened multiple times as I redownload my music to try and get it to stick.

I suspected that, it could be caused by the SD card restrictions that all OS post-jelly bean came with. Normally it does not allow 3rd party apps to write to SD. But can also cause some saved files to not read on 3rd party apps..... I bet if u moved the files to internal storage it would work.
Only other way to fix that I am aware if is rooting and then running the "SD Fix" app you can download in the play store.
