[Q] How do i flash CyanogenMod 10 and SiyahKernel? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a stock SGS3(4.1.1) pure stock. And now i want to flash CyanogenMod 10 and SiyahKernel.
But i don't know were to start!
What do i need to do before i install Odin(or mobile odin if you guys recommend that)
Please guys can you make me a step by step guide, how to flash CyanogenMod 10 and SiyahKernel?
This is my guess on how to do it:
1.Root
2.Flash a custom recovery
3.Flash CyanogenMod 10
4.Flash SiyahKernal
Probably i am all wrong. And that's why i need your help.
Thank's in advanced

Root with cf root which one have cwm and others steps like u said.
Better see instruction which every rom have on their threads.

Thank's mate
So CF-Root have CWM(i i guess that is Custom recovery?)
I guess i have to flash CM10 before i flash the kernal?

Yes cwm is custom recovery.
First install rom than kernel. Wipe your phone from cwm before you install a new rom.

Do you know WHY you want a custom recovery?
Are yo udoing it because other people told you to or because you know what are the pros and cons of doing so?
If you just want root, you can just install Siyah kernel using Odin. That will give you a custom kernel + root. You can only use MobileOdin (which is great!) if you are already rooted.
There is no need to flash CWM or anything else, unless you know exactly what you'll be gaining or losing from it.
I suggest you take a look at the posts from the past 2 weeks and you'll notice that a lot of people are having problems with CWM. The most common is the lack of USB connectivity to the computer.

When i flashed my SGS1. I used ClockWorkMod. So i was thinking i will be needing that for flashing CM10 and Siyah Kernel.
And no. I don't know the pro's and con's with CWM(?).
Do i need cwm when, flashing a ROM and a Kernal?

You need a custom recovery to flash, yes. Root your device, install a recovery, and flash you Rom. There are guides here where all is already written.
As we can't do things for you, it's good to read a bit...

No, you don't.
Just flash SiyahKernel using Odin3 through a USB connection. That's it.
I've done it on SIII of several friends, and in no moment I used CWM.
CWM is so full of bugs it is more trouble than a solution.

Until you fully understand the pro's and con's of a custom recovery, I advise you to keep the stock one.
Read more of the post in these forums, specially the stickiers, read reports of users with problems, and so on. You'll come to the conclusion that a custom recovery, such as CWM, is uncessary for most users.
For what you want, however (which seems to be flashing a custom kernel + rooting), they aren't necessary.
Like I've written, you can flash Siyah using Odin. This will also root your device automatically. From then on, you can simply use MobileOdin to flash kernels and ROMs, while keeping your phone rooted.

From:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CyanogenMod
The CyanogenMod source code repository also contains the ClockworkMod Recovery (a "recovery image", maintained by Koushik "Koush" Dutta), which is used to install CyanogenMod and other custom upgrades. A recovery image is a special boot mode, which is used to backup or restore the device's storage and repair or upgrade system software. ClockworkMod Recovery can be automatically installed onto many rooted devices supported by CyanogenMod with Dutta's companion app, "ROM Manager", which is available on the Play Store. CyanogenMod does not need to be installed with a ClockworkMod Recovery, others such as TWRP (TeamWin Recovery Project) work just as well. Some users have experienced hard bricks from "ROM Manager".

Just to clear thing's up here!
This is what í will do?(i have choosen to use CWM)
PS. I Don't want to use ODIN(Desktop)
1. I root my phone with CF-Root and install CWM automatic i guess(?)
2. Than i use CWM Manager to flash CM10(?)
3. Than i use ODIN Mobile to flash SiyahKernal(?)
Or could i flash SiyhaKernal first. And than flash CM10 with CWM Manager for example?
Or could i just flash the kernal via odin without rooting my phone before i flash it?

1. Root your phone
2. Install Cutom ROM (CM10)
3. Use CWM (if installed) to flash SiyahKernal

I used Odin to root my phone and I have a CM10.1 nightly installed right now. I am about to flash the Siyah Kernel but I wonder - since I like being up to date with CM nightlies, will installing a new nightly override the Siyah kernel? Will I have to reinstall it every time?
The way I get it is a kernel sits between firmware and hardware - so by installing new FIRMWARE the kernel is untouched. Is that correct? I am glad for any information on this.
Thank you a lot in advance!

The CM nightly roms as with all other s3 roms have boot.img in the zip (i.e the kernel) so yes, flashing a new rom overwrites the kernel.

[Q] [QUE]: Unable to install Clockworkmod and CM7

Hi All,
Eventough I bought my SGS2 about a year ago, I decided to root it recently. I read various threads on this forum, and then decided to root my phone using CF_Root. Since my Kernel was XXKL1, I downloaded the appropriate file and used odin to flash PDA. Everything worked and I was able to successfully root my phone and install root apps like Titanium Backup Pro.
Now, I wanted to install CM7 on my phone, as it is know to be very stable and doesn't have random reboots. However, after I flashed the .zip file using manual Clockworkmod recovery , the phone refused to boot and went into a bootloop. Upon research, I found that CF-Root Kernal will only be able to install the firmwars which are in Samsung format (factoryfs.img, zImage etc) and the CM7 is not in that format.
I now decided to flash a kernel with standard ClockworkMod and downloaded it from Koush's site. After flashing this (Odin, PDA), the phone got stuck in Bootscreen, with the yellow triangle.
So, as of now, I can only use CF-Root Kernel (stock Kernel works too). Is there any way I can install stock CWM on my phone and be able to install CM7?
PS: I also tried flashing back stock rom, install clockworkmod using the wiki at CM7 SGS2 page. The Phone again went into a bootloop. So basically I am not able to install any kernel which has clockworkmod built into it

Well, I guess my original post was long, but unclear.
1. My phone is working perfectly.
2. I am able to root using Chainfire's method.
3. I am able to remove the yellow triangle by flashing the stock kernel via odin and then reflashing chainfire's zImage via CWM
4. When I install CM7 via clockwork recovery, the phone bootloops. Even flashing the CF-Root kernel doesn't help. Only option is to restore from backup.
5. When I try to install any kernel with Koush's clockworkmod recovery, the phone restartes after flashing and gets stuck at the yellow triangle screen.
6. I am able to flash odia's insecure kernel without any issues.
I am looking for solutions for points 4 & 5, so that I can install CM7.

Hi mate, I've never tried cm7 nor cf-root kernel on my galaxy s2 but once i got into boot loop so i searched in xda forum and i found the answer.now I drive stock rom + siyah kernel which also provide CWM 5 for you.
I think befor doing anything first flash your drive with stock kernel which also removes yellow triangle then do you should be out of boot loops. if didn't work flash the whole stock kernel then go on with flashing cm7.
I guess then you could flash siyah kernel next flash cm7 using CWM. The benefit if using siyah kernel is that it's compatible with either stock or cm7 firmware.

@JJEgan: I made sure I read all the posts in the CM7 thread before putting up a thread myself. No clues there. My problem is that I am unable to get the custom recovery working via clockworkmod recovery... and then flash CM7
I also tried doing it the CM7 way, as described in their wiki but faced the same problem..
@mekhonte: Thanks for the suggestion on siyah kernel. I will try that. What about battery life on it?
I know how to come out of the bootloop, and have successfully done that. But, I am still unable to go into CM7.
I had cm7 installed via cf-root. Maybe you didn't wipe data, cache and dalvik csche?

I tried siyah kernel on cm7 and it didn't work, probably because it us not for cm7. Just flash KL1 then related cfroot, then download an install cm7:
1. In cwm clean data, cache and dalvik cache
2. Install cm7 zip TWICE (that is important)
3. Install gaps
4. Clean caches and data one more time
5. Reboot
And don't mess with the kernel. Cm7 comes with its own kernel which is optimised.

this is the link of the siyah kernel thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1263838
the developer claims the the kernel is as stable as stock kernel which i believe as long as you do not mess around with CPU frequencies and governors or under volting, it is. i think it has improved my battery life some how, auto brightness script has been modified and also you can down-clock your CPU. I think it's worthy to give it a shot.

A: Yes, but it only support cm7 or miui based roms for now. If you are using another aosp based Rom tell me and I will support it.

Ok here we go followed my instructions then flashed stock rom and rooted cwm .
Root + CWM .
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
This is meant to clear all user multiple errors and start from a clean phone .
Then to CM7 instructions .

First time flashing CyanogenMod 7 to the Samsung Galaxy S II, or coming from another ROM?
Root the device and install ClockworkMod Recovery. Instructions are available here.
Perform a NANDroid backup of your current ROM.
Format the system, data & cache partitions of your device.
Perform a factory reset.
Flash CyanogenMod.
have to flash the rom twice in a row to get it booting...is plastered all over the CM7 thread so i did .
Going by your post in CM7 thread you do not have CWM custom recovery installed
CWM and root same as my fix post .

What is the safest way to install a custom ROM? (Ideally, I want to install CM9 and later CM10 when it is more stable). I've seen people saying to flash Siyah kernel first, then do whatever afterwards. How can I do this? Almost a complete noob here, what buttons do I press in Odin and what procedure do I follow to flash a safe kernel then a custom ROM.
NB: USB is a little buggy, on-device flashing preferred for that reason.

Yes,, you need to flash a custom kernel.
1. First post your full ROM details
2. Can you confirm that you have ROOT access?
3. If your USB is buggy, you still flash Siyah kernel using mobile Odin, or the temporary CWM recovery. Root access is needed.
Thanks for the really fast reply.

1. Stock 4.0.4 from samsung; Kernel version 3.0.15-I9100XWLPT-CL941023
2. 100% have root access. Running Droidwall (which is working) among other things
3. I'm unsure if it's the phone, USB port or drivers which are buggy.
Is it possible to get a definitive procedure to flashing Siyah with mobile Odin? (presuming it's safe to do so). After that, is it safe to just flash the full CM9 ROM with CWM?
The safest way to avoid the emmc bug is to flash a custom kernel. Like siyah or dorimanx. If you have root access, and CWM, you can install one of them. Do you have CWM? well then follow these steps.
-Download a custom kernel. Eg the .ZIP file of the latest version of siyah kernel for S2 from gokhanmoral's site.
-Store it in your internal SD card on your phone.
-Boot into recovery. ( Vol-up + Home + Power button )
-Go to: install zip from SD -> install zip from internal SD
-select the kernel's zip file
-select 'yes'
Let the phone reboot once your done. You should have a custom kernel and no chance of the emmc bug bricking your phone.
The reason I suggest using CWM rather than Odin, is incase you have a faulty usb port, that might pose a problem while installing via Odin.
Hope this helps.

I have root access but no CWM. When I originally rooted the phone the sole reason was for droidwall.
Is it safe to install CWM and flash a custom kernel as long as I don't do any data wipes?
Can I install a custom kernel and have the phone as is (without noticeable differences) until I flash a custom ROM?
What happens to SuperSU and it's settings when I flash a custom kernel (and will I still have root access)?
Finally, if anything screws up what is the recovery procedure? I don't have a copy of this kernel/firmware as I installed it as an OTA update.

I've installed Mobile Odin (v3.35)
I've installed FlashKernel (v2), there was a v1 higher up the page but I'm going to assume that v2 has some bug fixes or other updates (please correct me if I should be using FlashKernel-I9100-v1 rather than v2.
Now, I'm not sure where to go: Should I install CWM or flash straight to Siyah kernel. CWM seems safer since I can do a backup and hopefully have some access if anything goes wrong.
How do I flash CWM with Mobile Odin? Which flash (mode? partition? not sure about terminology here) do I choose (Kernel, ..., etc) and probably importantly: which version of CWM should I be using? I've seen many threads talking about CWM4/5/6. Are they simply updated versions? designed for different kernels/android versions? Are there any specific versions which try to mitigate the superbrick bug?

Flash Siyah kernel straight using mobile Odin. It comes with a permanent CWM recovery too.
Todays almost all kenels are safe
so resure yourself
And be careful, when you flash rom in recoverymod
if. battery is off when flash rom, your device have hard brick
so you must have change your main board

I'm just wondering as I'm in the same boat as the OP was once in.
When it comes to choosing the Kernel does it matter if its JB based or ICS because I'm on the stock ICS rom.

You don't have root access, right? Flash a custom kernel with Odin (like Siyah), but make sure it's compatible with your firmware. So if you're flashing Siyah, flash the version (v4 and/or v5 is what I thought) that's meant for ICS, otherwise your phone won't work.

Actually I used another method that allowed me to gain root access, but I'm on stock kernel and rom. I kind of feel safer when flashing a kernel and rom from recovery.
So say I use Siyah ICS for my Stock ICS rom, If I wanted to flash a JB rom like the one leaked from samsung would I need to also flash the Siyah kernel for JB too?
I have I9100T as well and 4.0.4 on it, what do I do? Will Siyah work for me?

8. Flash Custom rom (Or just kernel)
9. Reboot
10. ?? Profit ??
Now you got Custom rom or Kernel + Full stock rom backup (can always get stock rom from sammobile if you lose it)

Thank u for the response. But im a bit scared flash or wipe in temp touch recovery. Because a friend of mine got his s2 super bricked while trying to flash on stock 4.04 kernel. does this emcc bug affect 4.03 stock kernels as well? So can i just flash the latest Siyah Kernel using ODIN ??
Any time you root/flash a Rom theres a chance to brick your phone. What -Grift- said is the easiest and best way to flash a custom Rom in my opinion. Just make a Nandroid backup, delete data and cache, install the zip file from your SD card. I've flashed 4 Roms so far with this phone, all successfully. Currently I'm running Cyanogenmod 7 on my DINC 2. Good luck on whatever method you choose.

Go into download mode, connect your phone to your computer and use Odin to flash a custom kernel to your phone. That done, you have root and you're safe from the emmc superbug. (EDIT: although 4.0.3 doesnt have the bug, if thats what is bothering you) You can then flash a custom rom or whatever else you please. Use the TAR version of siyah v4.1.5 from www.gokhanmoral.com
Instructions on how to use Odin are available all over this site and on the web in general. Search and you'll get it.
If you don't wanna use Odin, your only other option is flashing temporary CWM. Search for rachmat3's method or use the one mentioned above. All three are equally safe provided you read up on the procedure adequately.
99.9% of the phones getting bricked is coz people jump headlong into the procedure without first bothering to educate themselves on how to go about it. They get what they deserve.

If noobs on xda have taught me one thing, its that smartphones just aren't for everyone.
Or just wipe only when you have flash the rom (custom recoveries are safe e.g siyah dorimanx)
Edit: AFAIK 4.0.3 are safe the bug is with leaked 4.0.4?

Thank you for the info. I know few things about rooting and custom roms. I have flashed so moany roms with my HTC. Im new to samsung and odin. Thats why i wanted to make sure before doing anything stupid.
Thank u all for the help. I successfuly flashed Siyah kernel to get root and CWM

How to install CWM on Rooted i777?

I'm used to just rooting and then using ROM Manager to get CWM on other devices.
(Or using ODIN and a .tar)
I'm only seeing .zips for Kernels/ROMs which as far as I know are only installable by a (custom?) recovery.
Can I just use the built in recovery to flash a Kernel/ROM?
However for i777 I see everyone is saying ROM Manager leads to a lot of problems.
I've seen that for s2 the kernels come with CWM (or a custom recovery) attached to them already?
I'm just seeing old and outdated posts, and the stickies don't make it terribly clear either.
So after rooting, what would the next steps be if I wanted to install CWM?
I assume Odin/Tar method? Can someone show me the latest tar to flash?
After that I could use CWM as usual to install a ROM such as CM 10(.1) or Task650 AOKP correct?
E:
Now I'm seeing inside of the .zips there is a Zimage (for this Kernel http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1592228) and that I can safely flash that file using ODIN?
Would this also (in most cases/for most Kernels) also contain CWM or some type of custom recovery?
like the stickies explain, recovery is packed with the kernel. if you are rooted already, use mobile odin to flash the zimage. otherwise, use a tar file with regular odin to flash a custom kernel....
Okay so after root, use Mobile ODIN to flash the ZImage file found in the .zip of any kernel file?
Do ALL S2 kernels come with a custom recovery?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1592228 I believe that

Okay thank you, just used to i747 things so this is very new to me.
What would be the proper order to move from a ICS to JB?
Flash ICS Kernel.
Flash JB ROM via CWM.
Flash JB Kernel (If I wish to use a different one that what the ROM comes from).
And just to double check, I just flash the ZImage via Mobile Odin and I'm golden?
Once you got cwm you are good to go.
Following intructions from rom's op make it safer.
Usually factory reset + flash rom.

All correct. Make sure to wipe before flashing roms

I don't know if it still bears true or not but AFAIK, if your currently running GB OS, then you need to flash GB kernel, not ICS kernel and vice versa.

As far as recovery goes, it shouldn't make any difference. An ICS kernel with a GB rom will not boot, but it will still boot into recovery.
Correct. If you're just flashing a kernel to gain cwm recovery it doesn't matter as you're not booting into the OS with that kernel installed.
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Install_CM_for_i777 this method worked perfectly for me
Do. Not. Use. Rom. Manager.
the above method seems to initially just boot cwm, i didn't try to flash the zip again in cwm to see if it sticks.

Android wont boot up after CWM

Hello. I have galaxy S2, and I wanted to install CWM. I installed it (CWM-KitKatCompatible-i9100) with odin with auto reboot unchecked and after that it doesn't boot up. It can go to odin and CWM modes, but the android doesn't launch. I did a recovery to phone storage, but still I cant launch the phone... Can anyone help me?
Flash a compatible kernel to your installed rom via recovery. Or you can flash an insecure kernel via Odin.
Simple cwm flashing won't boot up your phone.

Would you mind explaining how to flash a compatible kernel to my phone via recovery? Also I didn't install any rom just cwm. And where should I get a proper kernel to my android? Sorry for dumb questions, but I'm not experienced enough as you see...

Well, there are 3 kernels which are quite popular here which have their depth range till kitkat roms.. A simple search on xda for them will lead you to the respective threads.
1. Gustavo's
2. Dorimanx
3. Apolo
If you want a KK rom then download a KK compatible kernel mentioned in the op for those threads, put that on external sdcard and boot to recovery. There you can flash the Kernel file. As you don't have a rom on your phone it would be better if you download a rom and gapps package too and flash them. After flashing a kernel, reboot to recovery and then flash rom and gapps.
If it's difficult for you to put those files on sdcard, you can flash a stock rom via Odin, flash a kernel e.g. philz, apolo, hirox via Odin. Search for these keywords here on xda. Once you have a working kernel and rom, you can download a custom rom and gapps, put it on your phone and follow the procedure which I mentioned first.
If my steps are still confusing to you then you require to search for these terminologies here on xda, read and understand them carefully and then proceed.
You didn't mention what OS/Firmware was on your phone before you started.....this is VERY important to know as it will decide what you can / cannot flash.....
Custom kernels are OS version dependent.....some will only work with ICS, others will only work with JB.....some are exclusively for KK.
You need to check this.....

well I couldn't check cause it couldn't boot up, unless there's another way... But whatever I managed to write 4.4.2 Kitkat on my S2 and there's alot missing feature's like, I cant organise my program menu, I cant add many widgets that I had used in my previous android, there are no notes, phone file explorer and other what is irritating... Maybe there's some another pack that I missed when installing or what?
