Update problems after rooting - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys, first post so be gentle!
After plenty of reading I decided to root my S3, which is a UK variant locked to the Three network. For a while I was running CWM with the Siyah kernel but stock ROM. After being unable to install any updates (OTA or Kies) for an unknown reason I decided to use Odin to install flash back to stock 4.0.4, which I thought was the right idea...
Now my phone shows that there are no updates available OTA, and Kies tell me that my phone doesn't support updating with Kies. I know JB is available on Three here in the UK, though I'm not that fussed, I just want my phone to have stock firmware and kernel and to be able to update if I want to! Would any kind and knowledgeable soul be able to help me out please?
Android Version: 4.0.4
Baseband: I9300XXLE8
Kernel: 3.0.15-554452-user [email protected] #1
Build: IMM76D.I9300XXALE8
Thanks in advance and sorry if this is in the wrong section!

Dont wait for official via OTA. You already rooted.. go to sammobile or search here for official roms. Download and flash via Odin.

Thanks guys. I probably should have mentioned that my concern is if I choose to sell the device on, the new owner won't be able to update OTA or via Kies, can this be fixed at all?

[Q] Samsung Galaxy S2 root question - Need advice

Hello,
I am brand new here and just got my S2, which I would like to root. I have read the post from Chainfire. My question now is:
My base version is I9100BOKD1
Buidl. GINGERBREAD.BOKE4
Kernel 2.6.35.7-9100BOKE4-CL-188639root DELL102#2
Can I use the XWKDD_insecure.tar for rooting or do I need another version. Would an upgrade by Samsung to a newer version still be possible?
Hope some can help me on this, not willing to brick it!
Thanks in advance
you definitely can use this kernel for rooting, just flash back your stock kernel afterwards!

you can always flash new fw versions with ODIN

Thanks for the answer. Where do I get the stock kernel from? Is it possible to backup it from the device.
I read that I would need the adb driver for my phone. I have KIES installed and I am able to get on the phone via MyPhoneExplorer. However, KIES does not work. Where do I get the adb driver from? Uninstall and reinstall KIES? Thanks anyway for the quick response!

So essentially for my version I would need the KE4? right?
I already rooted SonyEricsson Xperia X10 and X10mini, so this should not be a problem. I just want to make sure to have the right stuff in place and not to brick it. Thanks again!
No KE7 should work it has KE4 modem baseband .

So you are saying I already have KE7 although it says KE4 in the build? Why should I use the KE7 then?
I tried to use KIES to look for updates, however S2 is not recognized by KIES.
In terms of the adb driver ( I use WIN XP SP3), do I need to see it. I am able to connect to the internal SD Card. So does it work then?

Thanks. As I am a Newbie I jsut need little advice.
I finally managed to connect with KIES by simply disabling UBS debugging. Now I have what is rquired to know:
PDA: KE4
Phone KD1
CSC KE4 (DTM).
So I suspect I could take the KE4 from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1101671
As far as I understood from our conversation is that KE7 is the newest kernel and KE4 is included. Would an upgrade to KE7 still allow me to officially upgrade to a possible newer version?

Ke7 is now superseded for some by KE8
Modem in KE7 is KE4 .
Once you move to stock rom you may lose your update path through Kies .
You have posted
PDA: KE4 older firmware than KE7
Phone KD1 Older Modem than KE4
CSC KE4 (DTM).
But the Kies update path will always be open if you update via Kies from original firmware even if its much later for updates than flashing stock rom via Odin .
Path for firmware is Samsung build stock rom its then passed to the network /providers for testing and customisation they then send to Kies . Kies matches original firmware product codes etc finds a matching update and downloads .

[Q] Kies doesn't recognize firmware

Hi,
Kies doesn't know what firmware my phone, how can I solve this problem without having to root the phone or change roms?
Thanks
Rooting is not required to change ROMs.
The most important thing is, what ROM have you on your phone?
If you have a ROM that is not a standard ROM (stock or branded) then Kies will not recognise it.
Its a stock rom.
Something got messed up with the last update, and since then kies won't recgonize the firmware..
What should I do then?
By the way, the new update is 2.3.4?
thanks
If something got messed up, then reflash the ROM you can use Odin and use the stock ROM in the ROM Developers section.
maybe an older version of Kies might help..try searching the forum cause yesterday the same topic as your asking came up and few suggested rolling back the Kies version...new one is having problems i heard
dont know if this help you but worth a try
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1285544
Will reflashing the rom delete all the phone's data?
Thank you both

if your talking about apps and stuff i cant remember to be honest cause i rarely use odin but i think it does a complete wipe so i say yes you will lose data..
but as the guy above said try reflashing a stock rom and once your back up and running we can take the next step...
word of advice...2.3.5 officially has not been released in the UK..if i did not root i would be only updated to 2.3.4 the last few weeks...i do all my updating through custom roms or even by Intratech thread were he has all the latest releases..Kies for me is a no goes anymore....
so do your reading and if you ever need any hand send me a message and if i can help i will
thank you

You welcome.
i remember when i tried to change kernels from CF-root thread i could not get kies to recognize it...so tried to find the one that matched the closest and region i am and bam it worked..updated my firmware through kies and that was the end of it...but if you use a kernel to root and try and to update it through kies you lose your root...so my advice find a kernel that matches your firmware then by all means go ahead root and try flashing roms...you can always go back on stock if you want...
but do your reading and like i said you want a hand if i can i will help you
Why kies doesnt recognize my firmware
Yesterday i flashed my SGSII with I9100XWKI8 2.3.5 firmware, before that i had I9100XXKH3 2.3.4. Both Firmwares are European i believe. In both cases my Kies do not recognize it.
i installed the stock firmware no root at all
Is it because i live in South America?

Hi, I'm new here, so sorry for my question.
I just update my firmware with kies the root disappeared. I've got my phone rooted from the stock. Now I want to update to 2.3.5 and I need to root again, but I can't find the insecure kernel I9100BVKH1 to root. Can someone help me what to do so I can root my phone? And if I update to 2.3.5 (now I have 2.3.3) kies won't recognize the new firmware? Thanks!

[Q] Samsung GS2- Should i update my firmware through Kies after rooting?

Hello, just to preface this- im not very technical, but i can follow instructions well.
Anyway, You guys were great to help me two months ago in rooting my phone. I ended up doing it through Odin and all went great. Got all the **** off my phone which was the main aim. I didn't put any custom roms on there as im a bit useless when it comes to this stuff and i felt i'd be pushing my luck after the rooting went so well.
Yesterday i used Kies and it asked me to upgrade the firmware as there was a new version available.
1. What should i do? Will upgrading through Kies reverse the rooting procedure or break my phone?
2. Should i get the newer update from this site? If so- is there any tutorial for updating the firmware after already rooting the phone through odin (chainfires method i think it was?
Thank you in advance for any advice all.
My phone details are ;
ANdroid 2.3.3
Baseband version I9100XXKE7
Kernel version; 2.6.35.7-I9100XWKF3-CL276555
[email protected] #2
Build number; GINGERBREAD.XWKF3
I have used kies to update firm ware after rooting and it did not UN root my phone so you should be fine. It did however install more useless apps that I had to remove.

i would update via kies then go to chainfires post and pick root and cwm to match your new firmwares kernel .
That way you wont have to learn how to flash stock firmwares etc .,

What JJ said is to flash via Kies and then flash the CF-Root kernel from Chainfire to get root and CWM in the phone.
Hi Azeurius,
the thing is that i already have root and cwm on the phone. Ive already rooted.
So im at the point where i can upgrade the firmware through kies, but im looking for advice what i should do overall- nearing in mind the fact ive already rooted, and phone details are in Openingpost.
THanks!
Ok well I am also new here but from everything I have read my understanding is that you have rooted your device and loaded the original Kernel for your current firmware. If you upgrade through Kies then you will obviously have an upgraded firmware with the old kernel (from your 1st rooting).
So when you upgrade your firmware you just have to also upgrade your Kernel through odin so your phone will still be properly rooted.
I stand to be corrected. I only started reading about rooting today as I just got my Galaxy s2 having come from a Blackberry so new to Android but loving it!!! Best os ever!
I think I will root my phone but not going to touch the firmware as ICS should be release on Kies soon cant wait

Any stock upgrade removes root .

Correct
One big problem with Kies is that if you change firmware its possible that you lose the Kies upgrade path as phone codes no longer match .

Hello guys. Im relatively new to XDA. So I might sound stupid. My question is, as jje mentioned above "One big problem with Kies is that if you change firmware its possible that you lose the Kies upgrade path as phone codes no longer match" am i correct in saying that if I update my Galaxy s II (rooted + cwm recovery no custom rom) via kies, then I could run into problems? Also one more question. If I do update via kies, will it remove root and cwm recovery?? Thanks guys. .

Use Odin
I think KIES forbides to upgrade on rooted firmware. Even if it allows you i think you will use your root. I suggest you if you want the latest stock rooted firmware use Odin find the stock rooted XWLSD(Nordic countries) and flash via Odin (Don't use XWLS8 it has bugs), XWLSD is super stable or XXMS1(Poland) or XWLSE(Russia) if you are not from this countries then use XWLSD. If you want custom rom with no mods and no bloatwares use Neat rom or Wanam lite rom, if you want custom rom with mods and no bloatwares use disaster, biftor, omega, alliance rom and etc.
Yeah. I dont mind losing root access. As log as I can get official ota. Btw has the exynos bug been addressed?

Thanks. I will be try updating my rooted i9500 and P600 via Kies. I am not sure if there is already an update for my region available for the S4 but I was prompted to update my P600 only to get a notification telling me that my device has been modified. This was for OTA updating. I really hope it works because I am really not looking forward to un-rooting these devices just for the updates since downloading the stock ROM takes forever. Will post results after trying just in case anyone is interested.

Samsung Galaxy SII I9100P firmware

Hello,
I know that there are probably a couple of threads on what i will ask now, but I have a couple of questions regarding the I9100P firmware.
First of all I installed a i9100 firmware(4.03) via ODIN.Does this mean I routed my phone? Kies now tells me that i can not update my phone because my device does not support update with kies.
How can I flash it back to my 2.3.4 firmware? Must I download the firmware from sammobile.com?
Best regards.

[Q] Kies Firmware Update Not Supported

So I decided to un-root and use kies just to get an 'updated' stock version instead of my current 4.0.4 version and I get this error message:
"your device's current firmware version is not supported to update firmware via kies"
Looking on sammobile, the latest stock version for my csc they provide is 4.0.4 so apparently I'm screwed.
Is there a workaround to get the 4.1.2 stock version for my phone?
Details:
I9300-XXBLFB
CSC: I9300OJVBLF3
The reason for this is NFC seems to be broken on this version (as far as receiving files go) and I wanted to see if they fixed the issue in the updated rom.
You have to change your CSC.
Can i just flash an XXEMF6 ROM from sammobile via odin?

Thats great news! I'll do that instead.
As far as I know, Samsung released an update for every version of the S3 (except mine) to JB 4.1.2.
Didn't even realize it until now as I've been flashing roms for 2 years now- about 2 days after I got the phone.
