My wife recently got a Vibrant, and she hates the bottom 4 required buttons on her home screens (Phone/Contacts/Messaging/Apps). She does not text, and wants to get rid of the messaging button. Is rooting the phone and installing a custom theme the only way to do this?
Also, what is the "lag fix" supposed to fix? She hasn't complained much about anything, and I haven't messed with her phone enough to see any serious problems with it.
EDIT: Also, what does having a "hardware locked" phone mean, what does it prevent you from doing, and how can I figure out if my wife has a hardware locked phone?

First off, I think if this is your wifes phone and you and she are unfamilar to modding its best to do as little as possible to get what you need. That said, if she hasn't complained about lag, don't worry about it. If you are interested, then lag is created because samsung uses a proprietary file system rfs which is a little slow. Lag fixes try to remedy this by either adding an ext2/3 partition, or totally replacing the file system with ext4. This last is for advanced users and I would not recommend.
Hardare locked refers to some devices that are unable to get to recovery or download mode by using the volume buttons and power button. There are threads to explain how to do it. Use them to see if your wifes is one.
As for the big ticket of your thread customizing your home screen, there are numerous launchers on the market. I like launcher pro, and adw launcher. Im pretty sure you dont even need to root to use them, there are free versions in the market. Good luck.

Thanks for your quick reply.
I am not new to modding. I have pretty seriously modded my Evo 4G (custom kernels, deodexed ROM, customized themes, etc...). It's just I am unfamiliar with the Vibrant and its root process, and I don't want to do anything to it until I know the ins and outs of messing around with it.
If I can mod her home screen without rooting, then that's probably as far as I'll go. However, I've told her to look over the themes here to see if she finds one she likes, and I'm fairly certain I need to root to install a custom theme if she decides there's one she likes.

Ok then, most theming i've seen on the vibrant is for the status bar, and not the bottom. Most roms end up supplementing touchwiz launcher with something like launcher2 or adw launcher. You might want to take a look at eugene373's frankentwiz. Hes modified touchwiz so you can edit the bottom dock and app drawer. Or if you dont want to go that far he posted the default launcher in the dev section that you Adb push to system/app its literally the default launcher from the g1 days. Its what I use.

Just use LauncerPro or ADW.
I got it for my girls Mytouch Slide. She doesn't need root. I doubt your wife needs the lagfix... the phone is fine just how it is for normal use.

Considering the most she uses it for is to play Sims and other games (stealing my phone when she wants to play Angry Birds), and for surfing the web, I think she'll be fine without root, just using a new launcher. She just really didn't like the fact that 1/4th of her bottom dock was taken up with a useless icon.

You don't need a new launcher to replace the sms icon at the bottom of the dock. Open the app drawer-> menu-> view type-> customizable grid-> menu-> edit ...
Then you can drag any other icon on the dock to replace the sms icon. Press the back button to confirm, then you can switch back to alphabetical grid.

Also, if you look around this forum you can find the Angry Birds apk and install it on your wifes vibrant.

Thanks for that tip. Although I think I will be getting her ADW Launcher anyways since it's much more customizable, and not as overloaded as TouchWiz. Plus I found a theme for ADW I think my wife will love.
Just as a follow on, is it normal for you to have to hit the soft buttons (menu, home, back, search) multiple times to get them to actually register? I've noticed that if they are not lit up, I have to hit them once or twice to get them to light up, and then again to do the action I was trying to do.

When I first got my vibrant I did, but I think it's because the touch sensors are very specific. As in, you have to hit the home button dead on for it to register. Once I got used to the button locations its not been a problem.
Btw, if you touch anywhere on the screen the buttons will light up ... Helpful when its really dark.

all you have to do is....
1.go into app drawer
2.press menu and select view type
3.then select customizable grid
4. then go into your app drawer again and select edit
5.then select and hold an app and drag it in dock where the msg app is
6.and that's it

completely agree with this. You've kinda be dead on or cover the majority of the button. Adw is a great choice. It's an awesome and absurdly customizable home alternative. Plus it's free
Thanks for everyone's help. I ended up going with ADW and the iDroid theme (my wife adores the little android droid mascot). Very easy to setup and looks very nice.
Hey guys,
New to the android world n I'm trying to get the hang of it so pls bear with me and my silly questions. Hopefully some of you may be able to help me with this question.
So as the title goes, I'm trying to remove the stock lockscreen slider since it seems to be kind of inaccurate everytime I slide to unlock. Sometimes it hits immediately but most if the time requires 2 tries.
I wish to replace it with something better but I don't know yet where to get the apk for it.
The phones rooted already and I am using sdx stock app remover. I am trying to figure out which apk I need to remove to disable the lockscreen. Does anybody know the name of the necessary apk file?
On top of that can I replace the deleted apk with a custom lockscreen? If possible, where can I find good ones.
I hope someone will be kind enough to help me. I really don't like the slider bar on the motoblur.
Thanks,
Aqua

I wouldn't mess with it until we get an sbf, but until then you can get a lock screen replacement from the market, there's lots of them like GOTO Lockscreen, Lock 2.0, FlyScreen, Widget Locker Lockscreen and many more Hope this helps
Cool! Thnx man. That helps a lot. I've been looking for an app to do so but never could find a good answer. I won't play around with the core files till things are clear. Thnx again.

Ehmm yea but that disables the security feature like the pin or pattern or Biometrics. What I want to disable is the screen lock slider.

get 'no lock' from the market
I'm with you on this, I would like to get rid of the stock slider and still keep my pin/pattern lock. I use widget locker so of course I have redundant screen locks whenever the security lock kicks in. 'no lock' on the market removes the security lock as well.

In my search for no lock, I ran across a few apps on the market that did this as well. Don't remember which ones, but if you search on 'no lock' a few of the apps that come up do exactly what you're looking for - you just have to put in the time and go through them...
The stock motorola slider and the PIN/Password security are all the same screen and cannot be interacted with separately in any standard manner. I'm looking into alternative ways of doing this, but they're very complicated even with root. Pattern is less strictly tied to slider, and already works better in 2.0 with WL 2.0.1 improving it more, but motorolas slider in front of the pattern is very difficult to deal with too.
Me personally I love using my fingerprint locker instead of the slider, it's quicker and more efficient. Just a quick heads up
I'd love using it too if it doesn't keep missing my fingerprint. Sometimes it could take up to 3 or 4 times to unlock. Don't know why.
So Im now using widget locker. Awesome app.

There's a great live wall paper called "MultiPicture Live Wallpaper" by IIIIIT. It allows the wall paper to change every time you change your screen (out of the 5 screens available). The new sense on the 3D have disabled it because it displays screen 5 and the live wall paper can not function properly.
Also, the carousel is overly sensitive. What's the point of being able to spin all 5 screens?
So, if you can contact HTC to try to have these problems fixed. I know others are having issues as well, I just don't know what they are.
This is what I sent HTC:
With the new sense on the Evo 3D, the new carousel disables reporting which screen you're on. This is affecting many users in many ways. Could you please update it so that developers can once again make the calls to find out "which screen" is being displayed?
Thanks
You can contact them here:

I agree that the carousel is an awful "feature." What's the big deal, SPB Mobile Shell did this on Windows Mobile many moons ago. I find it annoying because if I swipe too hard, I get a spinning window and I don't end up on the screen I wanted. I now have to be extra careful when I swipe. That's just silly.
This is so pointless.

What's my choice to disable that, yet keep sense 3.0?
How about my choice to change sensitivity so it doesn't do a full 360?
And i'm being serious, not a wiseass. Is there a setting we can access to change this?
AND BTW, Mr. Orange, you will now be Mr. Pink! Because someone else is Mr. Orange.
Sense has 7 screens.
I think the carousel and static wallpaper should be optional, because i like both the carousel and the static wallpaper. I also understand that others don't. HTC provide us with some new check boxes in the "Personalize" menu

You said it, an option to use or not use would be ideal. Please let HTC know!
thanks
The carousel effect is cool, IMO, and there are some features implemented within it that make it better. Some of these features people may not know about and which will make their experience with the carousel slightly better.
First, it really isn't that sensative. I have only accidentally initiated it once, when I dragged my finger across the entire screen.
With the 360 effect, it always returns to the screen you were previously on, never the main home screen (unless that happens to be the one you are on).
When the spin is initiated, you can make it continue to spin the same direction by swiping it over and over, and you can also get it to spin in the oposite direction by swipping the other way. Once the spin has been initiated, you don't have to do the long strokes across the screen to keep it spinning.
If you simply tap on one of the spinning screens, the spin will immediately stop on the screen you tapped on. If you hold your finger on the screen after you tapped on it, it will stop the carousel spin, but remain in that carousel screen, which you can then guide to the screen you want where it will stop.
The carousel is actually really cool if you know how to use all of the features built into it.
Not being a smart ass, but what the hell lol. Why do you guys have to swipe so hard? I never have a problem getting to the screen i want...

Thanks for the tips, but still for me, there's 1 main issue, I can't use a particular live wall paper because the system call returns screen 5, and that there causes the problem and was told it can't be worked around.
The major problem for most is not that they swype to hard, but with just a little of a flick the screens will rotate 360. What for? Although I will say that I like that the screen on the right most will continue on to the screen on the left most of screens.
But, an option to disable would definitely be the fix for some of this. Sensitivity would fix the rest.

I still don't have that problem buy maybe we differ on our opinion on what a little flick is. The reason they included it is for eye candy. I see no other reason really.

I have never accidentaly enabled carousel effect while swiping. Everytime I make it happen by actually showing it off to someone. Never happens on accident. So I really dont think it is over sensitive.
You guys know what? After reading all of the comments, I did some testing. If you give it a good swype, it won't spin around as long as you don't swype more than half the width of the screen. Once you go past that distance, the 360 kicks in.
Try it for yourselves and check it out.
I guess I must be used to the evo and it's slightly wider feeling screen and that is causing problems for me and some others.
All the other functions of the carousel are useless to me and I see t hem as only eye candy... which can be better used with the mult live wall paper
So I discovered today that when you remove the HTC Lock Screen apk in /system/apps the lockscreen becomes the default Jellybean lockscreen. This is great, as it gives you quick access to the camera and Google Now without having to put them into your dock. Plus I just like it more
The only problem is that when a call comes through, it doesn't show on the lock screen. You have to unlock the phone before you can see who is calling. Personally I find this a little annoying although I'm willing to live with it. I'm not even sure what that package is that controls this, does anyone have any clue how I can remove the Sense way of answering and replace it with another?
Thanks in advance! :highfive:
Well considering you still are on the factory sense ROM I don't think so.

I've just received my new G2 so I haven't yet done as much reading about it as I like but my first impressions are good However....one of my main reasons for buying this device was the 5.2 inches of hd screen real estate and how clever LG managed to cram such a large screen onto a relatively small device by using on screen navigation buttons in place of hardware buttons.
After playing with my device for a while it would appear that I cannot hide these navigation buttons (without root) so I am losing a large proportion of my screen estate
I noticed that in some streaming apps, the buttons magically disappear giving me a full screen view but this doesn't appear to be the case for all apps. Am I missing something here or is that just how it is?
It would seem a bit pointless to me creating such a beautiful large screen and not be able to utilise it properly
I am hoping that I am, indeed, missing a hidden setting or tweek somewere and am hoping that someone here will enlighten me. I will probably root if it is necessary but I would then have to forgo my skygo streaming which requires an un-rooted device :crying:
HELP!
There is unfortunately no solution to this without routing your device. I tried a lot of apps, ie button savior (which worked for giving me virtual home button and so on) and full-screen toggle which didn't work. It seems that the only solution is to root it.
Sent from my LG-D802 using xda app-developers app
So if you hide the navigation bar, how do you expect to go home or back? If you use custom roms or xposed you can shrink it to be a lot smaller, which is the best of both worlds
Sent from my LG-VS980 using Tapatalk
If you read my post, you would have your answer, mate. Button savior gives you the ability to toggle home, back and menu buttons in a way similar to pie controls where you slide from one side to toggle them.

Hmm, did not read this thread. Just wanted to ask, why you think you will have to forget about that app?
Have a look on Root Cloak there are 2 active ones one from Xposed the other on Cydia Substrate. Not sure they work for your app too.
But if you decide to root it should be worth a look.
