[Q] New ROM - HELP! - HTC EVO 3D

Hello everyone,
I've got my evo 3d few months ago, and now I want to put custom ROM on it. Before evo 3d I used xperia x8 with custom ROM and kernel and I see that it's kinda different. I've seen a guide for it for evo 3d, but can somebody tell me in which things should I be careful to not brick my phone? I want ICS nonsense 4.0 ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1507616 ), so can somebody recommend the best kernel for it?
Thank you a lot.

if you don't much care about messing with your hboot version and such, I would recommend unlocking the phone via the HTCDEV method.
it's relatively simple, takes about 5-10 min and chances are you'll have to do it even if you want to fully unlock the phone. (Chances of bricking very slim or none)
as far as the kernel recommendations go, there's no best kernel (as it is subjective), but my gf has been using one of Anryl's kernels with this rom for the past few months without any problems

I know your problems. There is no such thing as FlashTool for HTC . I can suggest you to read whole thread before you start with unlocking or rooting or whatever. So, read slowly, and have a good time. If you follow the guide, you won't brick your phone . Dessolator told you nice advice - unlock via HTCDEV.com and start with that..

First off, if you don't want to brick your phone, find out what Evo you have.
GSM or CDMA.
Then read about rooting it.
When rooting it, try to S-OFF as soon as possible, as it unlocks so many more features.
It's very hard to brick the phone, unless you flash the wrong files, so just double check. Other then that, enjoy your new phone!

look in the "rollup sticky" thread over in the Development forum. Video tutorials and write-ups and links to drivers etc. are all in there.
This should be all you need to root, flash a recovery and install su. Follow the directions exactly and you wont have any issues. Works for me although I use TWRP 2.0.
Should note, Im a cdma user.
ok, thank you very much, I post it here if I have some more questions
Ok, Since three days I have root with cwm on my phone, the next thing would be what rom is good? Want to flash a custom Rom but I like the original sense htc style and just want to overclock and have some more options in the menus...would be nice if someone could tell me

If your just getting the phone now, chances are its gonna have hboot 1.5. So you'd have to use the HTC method.

YA Hboot1.5 your stuck with HTC method use CWM for recovery alot of folks had issues with TWRP 2.0 not flashing right and dirty flashes.
Themes won't flash right along with other things.
Twrp 2.0 works perfectly for me. Only one version of clockwork will stick...so I use twrp, I like the touch based recovery. And I've had no issues making nands or restoring them. This coming from years of using clockwork. Just gotta adapt.

Hello, would one of the amazing Devs and experts help me out with a rooting issue im having for my evo 3D
I am in Japan and have just bought the Japanese evo 3D
Im kinda worried about rooting because im not sure if it will screw up the software inside my Japanese evo 3D
I rooted my og evo and my sensation 4g before and loooove rooted phones but i was in America with american phones
Can anyone tell me if rooting will screw up my phone so it might not work over here anymore like connecting to towers or not able to send messages
They are kinda serious about rooting and unlocking stuff over here
maybe it wont effect anything at all and my phone will work fine, im just clueless right now
The newest update out here is
android 2.3.4
sense 3.0
software 1.09.970.5 and that just came out not to long ago

Simple answer: Probably not but depends
Longer answer: The main factor I forsee is how to gain root access. Given the locked bootloader on this device, the process has been much more complex. Which version of he bootloader do you have? Does revolutionary work or is the only option HTC's unlock method?
The answer to these two questions will probably determine your fake. Either way, for the most part, having gained root access on the device and still running a stock ROM, will more than likely guarantee there are no tower/carrier issues.
Generally, with most custom ROMs, there should also be no carrier/tower issues but unless the ROM has been tested to work in Japan on those networks, there is no guarantee.
The only big conflict I would imagine would be taking a rooted device into the carrier for service. Probably best at this point to reload stock software and remove root access in order to ensure the device the hardware is using completely stock software and thus eliminate any odd issues from custom "unofficial" software.
As a side note, if you're read this far through my message, if the htc unlock process is the only option, my app, Flash Image GUI, works very well in helping flash kernels due to the HTC unlock limitation of not allowing kernel write access while in standard recovery mode. Have a few guides in the OP to my Flash Image GUI thread.
Hope that helps! Good luck!
I have the 1.5 bootloader and I just read all about the difficulties with it.
Thanks so much for the reply by the way
So your saying to do the HTC dev method to unlock to flash roms and then use your program to flash different kernel's?
I do for now want and kinda need the Japanese rom
So ill keep this rom if I use the HTC way?

Yes he is. You can change the ROM even if you use the HTC unlock method. Some things may not work properly if you flash the ROMs on here because of conflicting files. I learned that when I ported the Japanese Evo 3D ROM to the Sprint version of the 3D. You will have to flash custom ROMs based off the Japanese HTC stock ROM

somebody knows how to root this phone?

New to this phone but not new to android customization

Hi all..I just bought this phone and still in it's box..I had many android phones before and used to root and and flash costume roms regualrily..all I need is a go ahead on how to root and install CWM recovery and the best possible rom in ur opinion cause quite frankly I am lost because of all the threads and tutorials including the version number and all the warnings I read so I am trying to avoid any risk losing this phone since I live in Iraq and it's bad maintainance here and no one knows how to sort things when comes to repair..thanks in advance and really appreciate any help provided.. so happy to get this phone
Usr htcdev to unlock it, flash cwm, then either go s-off and flash your Rom and kernel or stay s-on and flash you ROM, kernel, then fastboot flash the boot.img. Tutorials are in main sections depending on whether you have CDMA or GSM. I personally recommend leedroid or mikrunny.

I can't add the links as I'm on phone but www.htcdev.com has the unlock instructions. As for the rest they are in the forums, try the stickies first. With regards to problems the only ones I would say are the battery life is not particularly stellar on any Rom really, and ics roms don't have functioning camera, but aside from that it is one hell of a good phone with the 3d as a nice bonus .

If you are xdma there is no need to void your warranty with HTC Dec. Look in the cdma Dev section under the stickies and just soff the bad boy. Pretty easy even if you have never run Linux before.

I am lost!!!!alot of talking about frimware and Shooter RUU and stuff...it's complex guys
Shooter, ruu, versions.. your lost?
Hey I would just like to share in part of your confusion and let you know, take it a step at a time! And always READ READ READ , everyone here is very helpful and if you have a question chances are its been answered the only thing is finding the answer hence, "read read read." As for "Shooter" I know HTC phones use code names and Shooter represents our phones the Htc EVO 3d , Supersonic represents Htc EVO 4G, so on and so forth. RUU's I know are the "STOCK" files the completely revert your phone to stock and stand for either "Rom update utility" or something of that nature I am still unsure but Have used before to update my radios through hboot as I am on HBoot 1.5 and wanted the new 2.17 base. As the versions and radios/hboot, software all of the above , on your phone go menu/settings/about phone and read about your versions of software, baseband represents your radio and software info will be something like 2.17.651.5 "build number" is exactly stated in that menu of the phone. Good luck !

Thankful..but still!
I can't thank u enough..u and the whole HTC forum family are really helpful and great..so I am going to read about what I'm gonna do..and then ask if I am right or not..first thing I registered in HTCdev site to unlock bootloader but there are minimum choices of countries..so I chose US and hence they asked me to choose my phone but they only give a list of Evo 3D with carriers(Sprint and T-mobile and soon)so I am afraid I may do anything wrong..mine is GSM version and not carrier specific and I live in Iraq..what shoould I do now??

need some help with flashing new evo3d

ok, im kinda embarrased to ask this as this isnt my first time around the block just picked this phone up for my wife.. as soon as we got it she updated it to ICS so its running the latest software from sprint .. ever since this thing has all kinds of bugs like keyboard not working right. random daily shut downs were you have to pull the battery to re start .. bunch of other little things. so i just want to flash a custom rom and man this has to be the most complicated phone to flash ive ever owned. theres tons of threads on s-off , s-on.. hboot this and h boot that, etc..etc.. is there one simple thread on what needs to be done to flash a new rom? is it possible to do with running the latest OTA? anyway , for anyone willing to point me in the simplest direction id appreciate it. :good:

htc evo 3d ics or custom jb

hello i come from slowenia.so in slowenia its nothing going on on android forums i ask here.i was buying htc evo 3d gsm version but non from sprint.i will know what its lately best rom that all things works on evo 3d.its that ics official for htc evo 3d or custom jelly bean and if jb than witch rom link or name please.
thanks

Hello. I looked over your question. But sadly most roms on gsm are either broken or missing components. Many users have reported bootloops and freeze ups. So jb maybe out of the question for you. My suggestion is to just gain s-off and root for your stock Rom. You could l look into at ramjet73's very easy guide to do so. Or you could look through the stickies in the gsm dev section.
I am using Mwakious rom GSM
Not one problem
Very stable rom as a faily driver. If you decide on ICS go for that rom

3 flavors of jb for the E3D GSM atm:
AOSP, maintained by Ubuntuz (completely broken atm) v. 0.7.2
CM10, maintained by agrabren(bluetooth, 3D and HW acceleration don't work, data sometimes drops and a few other minor bugs and glitches)v. 0.1.6
AOKP, maintained by helicopter88 (much the same buglist as CM10) v. 2.2
since you just got the phone, i imagine 3Dis pretty appealing to you, so jellybean is probably not a good choice.
I would recommend looking through this index thread and picking one of the sense 3.6 roms as they are by far the most stable:

thanks.so the original ics is the best way for htc evo 3d?i whant knew what is good s-off and root the htc evo 3d?what can i do with s-off 3d evo and rooted phone?please has someone easy way to root my evo 3d.i heave model x515m htc evo 3d.
thanks
So... basically s-off means you can flash anything you like (kernel, rom, recovery, bootloader) it does absolutely nothing for you once the system actually boots.
Root on the other hand allows you to edit system files and use some advanced features once the system is up.
There's no way (as far as i know) of obtaining permanent root without either soff or a htcdev unlock. So that's why the two are often mentioned together.
As far as unlocks go...they very much depend on what hboot you have... the easiest way is to htc dev unlock it,flash a custom recovery, flash the SU binary and finally install busybox or an equivalent. This procedure will switch your bootloader to unlocked and void your warranty so be sure u know what ur doing.
The other two procedures are revolutionary and the wire trick. These actually give you s-off.
Hope this helps.
