[Q] Touchpad Inductive Charging Coil DEAD?
I just got a replacement HP TouchStone after I noticed the last one failed to charge anymore.
But after trying out two AC adapters with the TouchStone (just to make sure it wasn't the AC Adapter), the Touchpad still failed to charge on the Touchstone (but it charges with the direct AC USB)
So it the internal Touchpad inductive charging coil dead?
I've always charged it with the HP Touchpad Case on, could that have had anything to do with it?
Take off the case. Mine has worked fine for almost a year.

Unfortunately, worthless.
Transformer needs 11v-15v to charge reasonably well. Any 5v charger, even at 1000000 amps, will not charge the TF with screen lit, or charge takes days with TF turned off.
Much harder to find auto chargers in the 11v-15v range, some that say 12v are actually not. I found one advertised as 12v (that measures 9.8v actually) and it also did not charge TF. Good luck.
Wont work. Unlike most devices the Transformer does not use 5v to charge like the iPhone and many other Android devices. It does use USB but it will only charge via Asus's special chargers. This is because our Transformers charge via 15volt and the charger cable is actually a USB 3.0 cable that has extra pins in back, and the 15volt pin is one of these extra pins the USB 3.0 layout provides.
Edit Bob Smith42 beat me to it by a few seconds lol
Be aware that it's incorrect to say that the TF won't charge from a standard USB charger. It does charge however it only trickle charges and therefore takes much longer. So let's make sure we are clear when we respond about what works and what doesn't. I used my iPad 2 amp charger on the TF and went from about 30% charge to about 85% charge in about 6 hours (screen off). The absolute fastest way to trickle charge from a generic adapter is with the TF powered off. Hopefully Asus will come out their own car adapter for the TF.
The charger that the original poster mentioned WILL trickle charge the TF. Also new TF users should know that the TF will not give any charging indications when plugged into anything other than the Asus charger - but it is trickle charging none-the-less.

One thing to mention that you can do if you have the tock is trickl-echarge THAT while still using the pad... then in 5-6 hours when the padd is getting low, you can dock it, and it will charge off of the dock while you keep using it. Once fully charged, undock it again, etc. This is what I want to do, and why I want a second USB cable.

Has anyone tried out something like this with the Nook Tablet?
From what I've read on Amazon, this thing is sort of lightweight. I was thinking with a slight modification to the bottom of it to add more weight, that it could be a workable docking stand for the Nook.
From what I've read, standard USB cords do charge the Tablet, they just don't charge it as fast as the super nook usb cord...
I have tried half a dozen AC adaptors and cables and the *only* cable I've found that will charge the Tablet is the cable that came with the device.
I'm going off the Settings->Device menu where it tells you if the device is "discharging", "not charging", or "charging".
The Nook Simple Touch AC adaptor will charge the Tablet but *only* when used with the stock Tablet cable.
Plugging the Tablet into the USB port of my iMac using any of my non-stock cables simply changes the status from "discharging" to "not charging", but the charging dialog doesn't come up. It's certainly possible that it's actually charging at this point but at so low of a rate that the device doesn't detect it.
It's also interesting that even though the stock iPad AC adaptor has a higher output than the Nook Simple Touch adaptor (1 amp versus .85 amp), the device will not charge with the iPad adaptor but will charge with the Nook Simple Touch adaptor.
To date I have tried the following adaptors:
Apple iPad - didn't charge
Nook Simple Touch - charged
Nexus One - didn't charge
Stock Nook Tablet - charged
and the following cables:
Nook Simple Touch - didn't charge
Nexus One - didn't charge
generic - didn't charge
Nook Tablet - charged
So to summarize, the Nook Tablet *cable* is the *only* cable I tried that will cause the device to recognize that it is charging. And the Nook Tablet AC adaptor and the Nook Simple Touch AC adaptor are the only two *adaptors* that would cause the device to recognize that it's charging.
As has been noted by many others the extra length of the connector on the stock Tablet cable appears to have something to do with initiating the charge as none of the other cables I've tried even come close to being as long.
Hmm, that's not what I observed. Using a Micro USB cable which came with a Blackberry Curve 8520 works for me. The lock screen on CM7.1 shows charging as soon as I plug it into my PC. I'll check how fast it is charging and report back later.
BTW: The PC has a Gigabyte GA-P67A-UD3-B3 mainboard with Gigabytes special "On/Off Charge Technology" enabled, see http://www.gigabyte.us/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3765#ov
See my post isn the NT 12pin USB Cable post (it is #17 on page 2) for an explanation as to why most cables and some adapters do not work with the Nook Color/Tablet
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20842376&postcount=17
Thanks for the hint to your post. I just checked the charging with my Blackberry cable and in 2 hours the charge only increased by 10% (or exactly from 52 to 63% in 125 min). So without the Nook cable you get only trickle charging.
Nook Color charger does it.

I have never used the Nook tablet or cable to charge it. How did I do it...
I have a nook color one, and have used that cable and charger. I was just to lazy to unwrap the new one, just used the old one.
Not sure if anyone else is looking for a spare wall charger like I was or not, but I found one on eBay that looked the same as the OEM one, and I bought 2 of them so I could have one somewhere else at home, and also have one to carry with me when travelling. If anyone is interested, the seller was accesscables and the item I bought specifically is here. They arrived yesterday and both work for charging. They look like Chinese knock-offs as they have the same information printed on them as the original charger.
I've tested some of not original chargers, all they works fine.
There is 5V 2A output on original samsung charger, but to make charge it must have output from 0,85 to 2 Ampers (and 5 volts, of course).
This one from DX (sku: 48615 with european plug) works just fine, it has 5V 1A.
The ideal is 5V 2A - it make charge faster.
Would this charge fine on an iPhone charger, or a universal car charger?
I am currently using THIS for my mobile and tab ,really light smart
As this may be off topic, but what I did was is I went to walmart and bought http://www.walmart.com/ip/RCA-WPW2UWR-RCA-Wall-Plate-with-2-USB-Charging-Outlets-White/20976676 . Now I just take my charger that came with me as the spare
i am using the HP touchpad charger, i think HP was selling them for 5 dollar shipped

i gives enough juice to charge the GTab
edit (no more free shipping now)
Nice find. When I sold my first gtab I kept the charger just to charge my phone with. Glad I did. Didn't know they were $20.
I use my iPhone & iPad USB chargers. Also a belkin mini surfer protector.

I use an Apple USB charger for travel, works without any problems for me. Only disadvantage is that its charging woth just 1Amper.

Can I use the charger for Asus Transformer 101?
I lost my HP charger last week, so I decided to charge my Touchpad with an el cheapo USB charger lying around my house. However, after charging it overnight with that charger, I could not turn on my Touchpad the following day. I then checked the specs of the charger and it has an AC input of 100-240 V and 50/60 Hz and a DC output of 5 plus minus 0.5 V and 500 plus minus 30 mA. I'm not familiar with electronics at all so I'm wondering if using a charger with different specs than the HP's one (input: 100-240 V, 50/60 Hz, 0.4 A; output: 5.3V, 2.0 A) have wrecked my Touchpad.
I tried to charge my Touchpad after finding my lost HP charger, both through direct micro-USB and through the Touchstone, but could not turn on the Touchpad after hours of charging in either route. I also tried various button configuration to turn it on (after looking at similar charging issue threads), but none worked as well.
I would really appreciate your help in helping me use the Touchpad again. Thank you in advance.
You really need to get the official one, it puts out so much more power than anything else. The TP is a hungry beast. The official was also rated as one of the best chargers period.
Mine died and a half-day on the official USB charge resurrected it.

Every time i have tried another charger other than the hp one I get a please conneect hp charger message.
I haven't had much luck using anything else other than the charger that came with the touchpad.
Edit: just checked the specs on the adapter. Output is 5.3v, 2amps.

I tried to charge it with the HP adapter but with a random USB cable (since I lost the old one). Do you think I should buy the original cable and try charging with it?
I've been charging the Touchpad for 2 days now with the original adapter and the HP Touchstone but it still hasn't turned on! :crying:
In theory using another charger shouldn't hurt anything, the Touchpad will charge slower because of the lower current output but nothing should go wrong. I always try to avoid cheap chargers because I haven't had the best experience with them in the past. Plus or minus 0.5V seems like quite a bit, a good charger will be able to provide a much more steady output.
Hopefully you can bring it back to life by charging it overnight with an official charger.

Yes I got that message too but I ignored it, thinking that it would just be slower to charge. Previous times the cheap adapters did trickle charge but for some reason for this charger the Touchpad did not turn on at all after I left it charging overnight.
Sounds like it died; with the screen on, my touchpad drains well over 500mA (more like 800). Therefore, leaving it overnight with the screen on and a 500mA charger would just drain the battery. I think you'll need to follow the dead touchpad recovery threads.
As for the charger breaking your TP, I charge my touchpad whenever wherever with whatever I can find. So I don't think the input matters much, and shouldn't ruin it. If the charger isn't at least 1000mA(1Amp), then I plug it in while turned on, then shut it down.

Yay! I got it charged after trying so many things posted here (angling the USB plug, put the tablet upside down so that the power button was pressed to complete discharge the tablet, charging via touchstone, etc.) but nothing worked. Finally caved and bought a new usb cable (I still had the HP adapter) on Ebay (http://www.ebay.com/itm/290794766792?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649). The moment I plugged in the new cable the home button flashed white and I was able to turn the table on.
I'm planning to sell the Touchpad after this since the tablet is just not stable/reliable enough for me.
I always thought that charging this tables takes forever.
Then, a few days ago I used an USB multimeter and found that using the original 1.5A Sony adapter and the original cablet, the tablet is charged just at 1.0A rate.
Then I tried with a thicker quality USB cable and the charge rate increased to 1.5A (+50%!), using all the power the adapter can give. The charge rate slowed down to 1.0A while approaching full charge but overall the charge process is much faster.
I did the test with the tablet powered on. Tried with or without the magnetic charging stand and I got the same results.
The original cable it's not damaged so I suppose the slow charging speed is intentional.
Anyway, I think I will continue to use the thicker cable so my charging times will be shorter, I suppose it's safe to charge this tablet at the full charging speed the original adapter can give, what do you think?
I never used the original cable that came with mine, I had a 6' Anker cable to spare so I used it instead and I thought it charged pretty fast, much faster then when I use the magnetic dock.
But I'm lazy, so it goes on the magnetic dock 99% of the time because it gets a full charge sitting on it anyways.
And there are kids.
Can't afford to lose the water tight bit.
This thing has found its way into the tub.
Darn good tablet.
BTW
Pretty sure its safe, its CPU is a Qualcomm that supports quick charge.

Do you use the same Anker cable with the magnetic dock? According to my findings, the magnetic dock should not slow down the charging process.
I don't have a USB multimeter, but I have used differnet USB cables to charge and found big difference in the charging time.
I have 2 original Sony chargers at home, one in the bedroom and the other in the Living room. Battery Monitor Widget showed that it could charge from 0 to 100% in 5.5 hours (at 1298mA, and 18.09% per hour) with a thick no-name brand USB magnetic cable in the bedroom, and down to only 406mA with the original Sony USB cable in my Living room.
The conclusion is: get a good thick USB charging cable.

Yes. I use the same cable.
Dock charging seems (or should I say seemed?) to work a little slower if I'm waiting on the tablet. Its not incredibly slow and I can stream Showbox (w/ Growbox and Allcast) or Netflix from the tablet and it still charge faster then use its juice, so its not a worry for me.
I've never had a battery problem with it either, it'll go all day as a reader or watching media and still have at least 30% left at the end of the day, so it goes back on the magnetic charger overnight. No reason to directly plug it in anymore.
as long as it is a working usb cable, there is no harm that a cable cause to a tablet.

Laughed aloud at the past about kids!
I bought a cheap 6ft USB charging cable and thought there was something wrong with my tablet because it took forever to charge. No multimeter, it damned on me that the cable was acting as a resistor probably because the wires are thin (cheapo).
Conversely, when I bought a refurbed z3V to have as a back up, it came with a generic charger that was rated only 1 amp (the phone charger from Sony is 1.5).
I think that as long as it doesn't go to much past the rated 1.5, it's good.

I stick to Anker. They're good products, have a decent price and if you're ever in need of customer service they're awesome.
I emailed them over a discontinued mouse that was out of warranty (software issue) and they called me the next day and made sure it was working right. This past December they sent me one of their portable phone chargers as a loyalty reward. I've got mice, keyboards, chargers, wires, phone and laptop batteries from them and they've all been fantastic. They make it hard to want to buy from anyone else if they've got it.
