It's 8.9 mm thick... wasn't the first Galaxy Tab 8.6 mm thin? Did I miss something?
(BTW: Not hating, just wondering. I'm still buying it... as soon as I can get a 32 gb!)
Yes but they don't make that any more. The tab 2 is 9.7mm

Also.. The Galaxy Note 10.1 is the same thickness (8.9mm) so technically someone else DOES make one as thin.
OOOHH! the Transformer Infinity is THINNER @ 8.5 mm. http://eee.asus.com/en/transformer-infinity/specification/
(For the record the infinity has quite a few issues and I don't recommend it. I owned it for 59 days)

Maybe we're all liers...
I could be wrong but I believe that he meant there is no other tablet with that screen, that processor, AND is that thin. So he meant nothing comes close to that package, which I agree, and he didn't mean just thickness alone.
I actually thought that was a great answer to the **** question by Apple fan boy josh. I believe he asked what makes the tablet stand out from the competition and Matias Duarte answered what DOESN'T make it stand out from the rest since there is nothing with an A15 and that screen which is that thin and light. Great ownage answer.
Of course the screen wins alone and the A15 also wins alone. It is just missing leading thickness or it would have been a clean 3 for 3 sweep, which is honestly pretty damn impressive for $399.

I beat you...I owned a Transformer Infinity for less than 2-weeks then sold it on eBay, LOL! I knew I was going to get more on there than the 15% restocking fee I would've been charged had I returned it. I completely agree, it had way too many bugs! I'd get random restarts in the middle of doing just basic web browsing in addition to the continuous annoying popup window asking if I'd like to wait or close the current app since it's taking longer than usual than usual or something like that (& this was even after the most recent firmware update). I'm hoping the edges are smoother too since the Infinity's edges were kinda sharp so it'd dig into my palms while holding it..end of rant, haha!
I'm not too concerned with the thickness since it's pretty thin. Not like it's the thickness of an HP Touchpad or anything. Try holding that for 30+ mins at a time because it gets annoying quickly.

I hated the issues with the TF700, I ended up buying one, returning it, buying another, returning it, all around the end of the 30 day mark at best buy, and they did not like that. I can't return anything there for the next 90 ays

On eBay you pay 12% plus 3% PayPal. If you sold at full retail, you'd break even with that restocking fee wouldn't you?

Well, I finally decided to contact Asus on the phone. They're pretty much clueless on what is going on. They are reading from a book or outline on what to say or ask it seems. Just to please them I did whatever is they asked. All the way down to a factory reset. I got my RMA and who the heck knows what will happen. I left them a very detailed message in the box, which I took several pictures of while I was packing it.
I actually may just go out and buy another tablet some where to tide me over, but haven't the slightest of what to get. I was thinking Samsung 10inch but jeeez they still are on Honeycomb. How is that?

Grab a Moto Xoom. They are less than $250.00 at Staples and already have ICS OTA. It doesn't have the same screen resolution your Prime has and only a Tegra 2 processor but it will certainly hold you over...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1472533
I picked up a Samsung Galaxy 10 tablet and I have to say for the price and a dual processor I'm pretty impressed. There was zero screen bleed when I turned it on, and guess what, all functions and features were working out of the box! I also like the DUAL speaker placement on the Samsung, they are on each side and not on the back AWAY from you. Oh well, nothing I can do now but if Asus can't provide a complete working tablet with my Bluetooth headphones working AND my wifi normal then I'll want a full refund and end up with this Samsung for now. I've been beating on this Samsung for at least 2 hours and not one reboot or glitch yet. Still running 3.2 and no ICS yet. I can't wait for some of these other companies to start making tegra 3 chips and hi-res screen. If the quality is like what this Samsung is I'll never look at Asus again, sorry.
I had the Galaxy Tab 10.1 before i got the Prime. IMO the Prime is much better than the Galaxy.
where in texas is your prime going? If its anywhere near sugar land I would want to stop by with my prime and have them see if they can fix my gps issues.

I've had two G-Tabs, a U.S. Wi-Fi and a UK 3G. They're built like tanks. I dropped it down a flight of carpeted stairs in nothing but its slip case and it wasn't even phased. I accidentally poured water in to its media dock while it was connected and it worked fine once it dried out. I can’t count how many times it hit the ground on airplanes and at airports and it still looks new. Compared to the Zoom and Jetstream it has the best Wi-Fi and GPS and supports the 5GHz band. The most impressive thing about the G-Tab is that it just works - the same way, every time. The display is really impressive. The design was changed in October and the new displays have better contrast and less in-your-face color saturation. There are also three temperature settings from warm to cool. "Official" ICS is supposed to be available Q1 but CM9's available and the only thing not working is the camera. Its got a robust dev community and some pretty impressive (speed wise) 3.2 ROMs and kernels available. 1080P's a bust because of Teg2 not supporting NEON but 720P works decently with the right player. On the downside, its Teg2, has no ports so you'll have to buy (expensive) accessories, and they're still expensive. Costco's got the 16GB for $389 in-store only. By buying it there, you can play with it for 90 days and return it if you don't like it or if something better comes along.
The Toshiba A200 with the same TI SoC and GPU as the GN is out in the UK and will be released this month in Canada as the Excite. I played with a friend’s and it's much smoother than Teg2 and the display is gorgeous. It's so thin and light it makes the G-Tab feel bulky. It's pricey though. It looks like the first Teg3 tablet to be actually available for sale will be the HTC Vertex (formerly Quattro) in March. The announcement will be made at a HTC press conference at MWC on the 27th. Hopefully it'll be sold Wi-Fi only and direct (and in the U.S.) and not tied to a carrier the way the Jetstream was. I had a Jetstream for a while and liked it but it weighed a ton and was too big to hold comfortably. I'd consider an HTC tablet, the Jetstream was extremely well built and even had a discrete subwoofer. Sense on a tablet added a lot of cool features too.
Good luck.

Nothing beats a (working) Prime.
Just kidding. Assuming the TF700, A700, and Vertex are solid, from that point forward, it's stupid for anyone to buy a first-gen tablet. The same could be said for the Prime if they weren't just so damn inconsistent.

Its cool. Just wanted to mess with ya on that post. But yes, from now on, on any new device, I will wait for a while and see how things turn out with it. I got lucky with the Prime, but not going to take anymore high dollar risks..lmfao. I seriously see me keeping Prime for a long time. Only thing that might entice me is once kal El/Wayne/tegra4 chipset comes out towards later or end of the year. I used Ipad for almost 2 yrs. Without really wanting another device. So I can easily see the same or longer with my Prime. We haven't even scratched the surface of the full potential or power of Tegra3 yet.
Good luck. Keep on the repair centers **ses, they've had my unit for almost a month. I called again today and no one knows why it's still there, worse yet; it hadn't been worked on at all.

I believe the RMA center is in Grapevine, TX. That's very near D/FW airport.
I'm sorry to say that when Samsung does come out with their tegra 3, gorilla glass, and all that I'll be grabbing one of those right away. Of course the current Galaxy tab can't compete with the Prime, but right now I'd take Samsung's quality control right now. I love my Prime, trust me, was an awesome tablet and I have no idea how long it will be RMA'ed for.
Just an update, I pmed Gary Key and I now have a replacement tf201. It works exactly as advertised and I couldn't be happier! GPS locks on 10 of 12 sats in my house with wifi off!

its so cheats and ive always been an asus guy....
why? its only a 4.3 inch screen...
Anyway, there is always something better around the corner..
So lets say you return the note and get the Asus and a couple weeks after you get that they say the SGS3 will be out next month after that..
Its a never ending cycle.
Nice! But I'm not gonna fork over $1000 for the phone plus all the accessories. Phone=$650 off contract + $200-$300 for dock + $100-$200 for keyboard. No thanks, I'll just get the Note for $159 from at&t on 2 year contract instead.

qHD...nice, but not Note nice. And yeah, that battery...not going to get it done, I think.
Plus you have to carry around a 10.1" tablet to get the hi-res tablet experience, which I thought was sort of the point of the Note. Unless maybe that tablet has the super high resolution like the upcoming version of the Prime (I didn't see it in the specs).

That's what made me cringe most. That's going to have some pretty terrible battery life.
That combined with the fact that the phone itself is 9.2 mm thick, means that the tablet will either be thick and chunky, or have a thick bulge for just the phone....either way is unappealing to me when you have the sexiness of the new galaxy tab arriving shortly.
In my opinion, if you're going to go for this combo, you might as well get a SGS2 and a galaxy tab. Unless you're super loyal to Asus. Interesting concept, I just think it will need a lot of refinement before it will be anywhere near a great selling phone.

But it has a small battery, only HSPA+, and is a whole inch smaller than the note.
Sent from the best phone in the world Galaxy Note!!!
I really like the idea of the Padphone and if you have the keyboard you don't really need a huge battery because the keyboard will recharge the phone's battery just like it does on the Transformer.
The biggest gripe I have with it right now is the stylus. It's just a capacitive touchscreen and a capacitive stylus which are terrible. The whole attraction with devices like the Note and Flyer are the Wacom and N-Trig capabilities built into the display. Asus really half-assed it with the stylus on this and you can tell it was a last-minute throw in.
Also, processor manufacturers have to get around to working with LTE. For us (Note users), the trade-off between Samsung processor and the Snapdragon wasn't that huge of a deal but there's a huge difference between a Tegra 3 and an S4.
I know I'm posting this in the AT&T Note forums, so the responses might be a bit biased, but here goes anyways. I was very interested in the Note from the first time I heard about it. Today I finally got around to going to an AT&T store and comparing a few phones. I was very impressed by the Note's screen, but I found it to be just slightly too big. It almost seemed like it would be perfect if it were 5.0 inches, not 5.3. Anyways, I was also very impressed by two other phones: the LG Nitro HD and the Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket. I've compiled a list of pros, cons, and prices, focusing directly on comparisons between the three phones. Pros are "+" and cons are "-".
Samsung Galaxy Note ($299)
+ Dat screen! Beautiful large Super Amoled display
+ Great battery life
+ Good development support
- Slightly awkward to type with
- Pen not as accurate as I hoped (perhaps problem with it being a worn out display unit)
- Phone was just too big for my hands.
Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket ($199)
+ Much nicer screen than expected, I was worried the low resolution would be a negative but it was hard to tell to my naked eye
+ Great development support
- Slightly too small
- HD Version coming soon
LG Nitro HD ($99)
+ Very nice sharp, colorful 720P IPS screen
+ $200 cheaper than the Galaxy Note
- Slightly too small
- Poor battery life
- Poor development
I dismissed the HTC One XL because it lacked a removable battery and SD card slot, but I might reconsider it because it seems like it would fit the screen size I'm looking for. I've just been waiting for so long before I was eligible for an upgrade, and the waiting is getting annoying. Is the Samsung Galaxy Note worth the extra cost and getting over the awkwardness? I was convinced I would fall in love with it when I finally got to use it, but that wasn't really the case, so I'm a bit hesitant. Let me know what you think.
Put it this way I paid 650 full price, so I'd say yes lol. Deff worth the extra "upgrade" price compared to those others you listed.
I had the skyrocket, it was a great device, but still prefer the galaxy note. So yes its worth the extra money. The battery life is longer, the screen is just goregous, you can definately notice the difference in screen quality from the 2 especially after using the skyrocket for a few months. My s-pen is accurate as long as i dont have it leaned too far sideways. also got use to the screen size in a day or 2, i can actually 1 hand text with ics keyboard
Wait for the HTC one x if you can. Sounds like that screen size will fit you perfect
I got the note and I m waiting got the one x
Personally, price for me wasn't even a thought. Not that I'm rolling in money... actually the note broke the bank for me. But this is something I use all day every single day. With something like that I don't consider price. It's more a matter of which phone you will enjoy the most and which will be most useful to you.
I am torn as well. I owned the skyrocker prior...the nitro is on sale for 49.99 and you can get the skyrocket refurbs for that price.. .hell the vivid refurb is a penny.
I have a ton of obligations i could put the money towards if I take the note back
I really like it but is it worth it....decissions decissions

Similar to what JPEG is alluding to, the answer to "Is $100 worth it?" is heavily dependent on how you evaluate the situation. I use my phone so frequently and for so many things that $100 is well worth the increased productivity and avoided frustration. Those other phones may be cheaper up front but the cost of the frustration and decreased satisfaction from a cheaper phone every time you use it for the next two years is far larger than the $100 you pay. This is a top shelf phone with a top shelf price.

I don't work for AT&T - and your money is your money so I can't tell you how to spend it. But I can address your cons from my perspective.
I agree that it seems slightly awkward to type with... or it did. I tried a bunch of keyboards and settled on Smart Keyboard Pro. I'm now just as fast on the Note as I was in the iPhone 4S. Spend a little time and you'll find the right fit for you and the screen (which may not be the same keyboard you used to use).
Pen accuracy - it'll improve as you adjust to the device. My first couple days with the phone I thought the pen was a gimmick. Now I've come to find it's a great tool and I take a ton of notes with it.
In the store the phone felt stupid big to me. And like you I felt it was just too big for my hand size. Reality is (and many here will tell you) - you adjust to the size and it takes on an almost normal feel. I think your hands are accustomed to the size of your current phone and so anything larger feels, well larger and out of place. Sure no matter what (unless you have Shaq hands) the far side of the screen is going to take an adjustment to reach, but the act of holding and interacting with the device will normalize in a short period of time. For me it was about a week and it stopped feeling awkward. Now after about 2 and half other phones just feel (and look) foolishly tiny.
The short period of time (even if it was an hour or two) in the store with the phone is (for me) - not enough to really get used to the Note or determine how you're going to feel about it. Its a fabulous device that's worth getting to know. Take the 30 days and if you don't like it pay the restocking fee. But I know for me - there's very little chance mine's going back to AT&T to get put back on the shelf.
Now, for one other recommendation: If you get the white - get a case or order the black back from Samsung fulfillment. The white back is slick as snot. I put the black one on and the grip is excellent.

Thanks for your advice! I'm glad to know that it just takes a little bit of getting used to. I'm very excited about this device, I was just surprised once I finally got my hands on it. I don't really have much to lose with the 30 day return window so I think I'm going to go for it. The development seems to be getting better every day, and I love tweaking my devices and getting the most out of them. I also am in big need of a new device for watching movies, listening to music and playing games (mostly on emulators). I think I will really enjoy doing that with the Note.
I was struggling with the same problem as the OP, just wasn't sure which to go with. I ended up deciding, mostly because I'm signing a 3 year contract, that I would go with the device with the best hardware, being the Note. I was worried about the size possibly making it awkward, but what I've found after owning it for just about a month now is that It's actually perfect.. My hands aren't small, but they're not huge either, and I can use it one handed for 90% of what I use it for, but I love tilting it on it's side and typing with two hands. I owned an HTC Touch Diamond prior to this, it has a stylus as well, and I found I'd always use the stylus for some of the smaller icons, well on the Note I hardly ever have to use the Stylus, just use it for editing photos really. The stylus is hardly noticable, if you use it great, if not then hey it's just an extra.
I think you'll get used to the size very quickly, and once you do, you'll have a super hard time going back to any other phone. I still have my Diamond Touch, use it as an alarm clock hah, and I get SO frustrated trying to manage it's tiny screen, and I remember when I first got it thinking it was perfectly sized haha... Oh how times change.
Imo phones like the Note are the future. I have a samsung laptop as well, 17" beast that I carry around a lot, and they make an awesome pair. It's kind of funny too, as they're both Samsung units, the stock back piece for the Note matches the edges of my laptop. Very esthetic combo. (RF711 laptop if anyone cares. )
( Also I type roughly 100wpm on a regular keyboard, so texting on phones has always been super tedious for me. When I tilt the Note on it's side and use the larger keyboard I can type faster then I ever have on a phone before. It's actually amazing I love it hah. )
I think the note has ruined me!!!! I've been using it for 7 days short of a month now and I have to say I loooooove it!!
I was skeptical of leaving IOS for android. I've played with android b4 setting up my GF's rooted nook color as a tablet
and its really buggy at times, I kept thinking to myself hmmm if the phones are this buggy then I'm gunna hate it!!!
But I took the plunge and haven't looked back since its very smooth and very few bugs. the size was giant to me
at first, but It has really become normal to me now. I pick up my old 3gs and I'm feel like its a tiny little toy!!!! LOL
So I say yes it is worth the price!!! I'm a photographer and I love showing off my photos on this phone!!!
I dont have a note so I cant speak on that front, but I can tell you the LG Nitro is what I would NOT go with. Played around on it a handful of times and every time it was slow and somewhat unresponsive.
If HTC one x is going to be unavailable for your network then go for Note. I moved 4s to nexus galaxy to Note and must say would not swap this device for any othrr device. Of course when One X is available that's a different story.

With the tempid reviews and high price of the nexus 9, I'm unsure where I want to go as far as tablets. I was hoping for a 200 dollar nexus 8 inch, but now it seems we're **** out of luck on that and ever getting the boot loader cracked (or at least having one released) what are you all going to do?
I ordered Nexus 9 early. After reading many reviews I cancelled it. Definitely not worth .$400. Already reports of getting very hot during moderate use. Feels cheap. Fit and finish poor. Back of unit has no support behind it, caving in. Sluggish during routine tasks. I want a k1 chip but not in a poor quality tablet. For $200? Yes.
I've waited two years for nexus10 follow up and am very disappointed. In fact many reviews recommended the hdx instead of nexus 9. Really bummed out. Feels like it was out together in 30 days, not two years.

yeah i tried to jump on that HTC flash sale, but like most people i missed out. it seems like any choice we have right now is a flawed, expensive tablet or buying one from a year or 2 ago that is outdated. not happy with the state of Android tablets right now. i have an old HP Touchpad and i actually like the 4:3 screen for some things, so the 9 was interesting to me. dont' know why they left out inductive charging though.

I love my touchpad as well. I think I've had well over a 100 different roms on it!!! Haha! That's my old standby and I love it. Still!!!
HTC apologized for last Tuesday's fiasco. Maybe they will put more up for discounted sale next Tuesday at 9. We will see...
Hi, I am thinking of getting a Nexus 9 from http://www.ebay.com/itm/HTC-Nexus-9-LTE-32GB-Black-Wi-Fi-4G-8-9-IPS-1536-x-2048-pixels-2GB-RAM-/221664596324.
Seems like a crazy deal to me, more than $200 off the price on Google's website.
So, do you recommend buying the N9, a one year old device ? I currently use an iPad 4 and it's quite big and heavy and I've been looking for a replacement. Tried the Galaxy Tab S2 8.0 but didn't like it so I returned it. My iPad is too slow for me especially with iOS 9 and it still has a 32-bit processor. So I seriously want to upgrade.
If I buy a N9, I would be rooting/ flashing kernels, recoveries, mods, ROMS, etc.
So what do you guys recommend ? Which tablet should I buy ?
I love the size, the front facing speakers and the 4:3 aspect ratio. However, if you can't deal with major lag which happens randomly and often then don't buy it.

That being said when it's running fine it's a delight to use
yes i would recommend it
I would too, but I am also thinking of eventually getting a used Pixel C because it more open, AFIACT. Here is a quote from here
Yes, the Pixel C will be supported on AOSP just like other Nexus devices. The bootloader can be unlocked to enable booting an alternate OS. Pixel C does not support Chromebook style recovery via USB. The firmware is open source. It is Coreboot. DisplayPort support over Type C is being worked on but we don't have a release date yet.

Open-source firmware!
Does the N9 lag even with such a powerful processor ? Should I just wait for the iPad Air 3 ?
Also, I've heard about issues like a flimsy back, light bleed, etc. Is this true and is there a chance I may receive a defective piece from the seller ? Are Nexus 9s which were manufactured in 2015 alright ?

I got a used 32Gb from Amazon for 250 with minimal lightbleed with a dec.2014 build date. Honestly, I have forgotten my other OCD complaints because they, like the light-bleed, are acceptable. Oh right, the flimsy back, it is just a half a millimeter of between the back cover and the internals. It is not perfect, but I only notice it when I am trying to find it.
My Nexus performs great, but I am a minimalist. Some people simultaneously run Facebook, YouTube, chat, music, bluetooth, Chrome, etc and get poor results, which could be the user expecting too much, or the device being a POS, I dunno. It is faster than my Nexus 7 2012, lol...
I just went through 6 of my active Chrome tabs and had no reloads. The 7th reloaded, but that tab was inactive for a few hours, so I think that is fine. I even have the zram (compressed swap) disabled, giving me less available memory.
If you want to hate the Nexus, you can. If you want to love it, you can.
I would recommend it. That's a great price! If you find you don't love it, you could always sell it and buy the iPad. I bought mine about 2 months ago, 2015 model, no lightbleed. I am a heavy user so I will have multiple apps running, I don't usually notice it slowing until the battery gets low, say 25% or so.
Since you already asked about root and ROMs, I wouldn't say it's necessary, but it does help with performance and battery life significantly.
If you are on a strict budget then yea sure its good for 200 or 250 but if you have a little more money I would either wait or get the tab s2 , I bought both on black Friday and I love nexus devices , have had every nexus made since the Samsung Galaxy Nexus s. I assumed I would be keeping the nexus 9 and returning the samsung cause I don't like the power button or touchwiz on Samsung devices but after using both the lag on the nexus nine is very very noticeable, particularly when switching between apps. It's build quality is poop in comparison.
Thanks for everything guys !
I bought a Galaxy Tab S2 8 inch on release day and somehow I wasn't happy so I returned it after a week. - @dislplin01
I've decided I don't need LTE since I will almost never be using it. How about the deal below :
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Nexus-9-32GB-Wi-Fi-8-9in-Lunar-White-Latest-Model-/121835686666?hash=item1c5df90b0a:g:dnIAAOSwAKxWZyws
A used 32GB WiFi only White Nexus 9 for $270
Serial number is HT4C as seen from the pic from the listing.
The seller also posted an image of the boot screen, says no dents or chips on the device but has scratches on the back.
Does this seem to have ANY lightbleed at all ? (Pic Attached).
Thanks.
Looks good just like mine, I don't see lightbleed.

HTC has done a couple of 40% discount specials. You might try to be a little patient. I got a brand new 16gb for US$239.40 for black friday directly from HTC's website. According to the serial number, mine is from november 2015 and i don't have any light bleed at all. I did found that it was charging way too slow, but anyway i flashed the same day pure nexus with fire-ice kernel and it started to charge really fast with an anker charger (just over 3 hours)... everything is going really smooth with minimal lag in a couple of apps, just like my nexus 5. Pretty happy with it so far.
The only things i'm not happy with is the screen ratio, and the buttons. I don't know why my ipad 2 youtube's app filled the entire screen but this one keeps the black bars, and both have the same ratio. With the buttons i don't have any problems since I configured double tap to sleep and to wake, I just use the volume buttons and they work just fine, but i still don't like them lol.
You have already seemed to purchase it. I would recommend it in general only if you can get a good deal on it. I got a lightly used one for 210 dollars, black 32gig wifi with the smart cover (I replaced it with a proper case) and a microsoft portable bluetooth keyboard that normally retails for 70 bucks. It was such an insane deal, I couldn't ignore it.
The IN APP performance is great. On chrome, websites load quickly. The issue comes from how the tablet handles ram. If you have multiple tabs open, you can expect those earlier tabs to refresh when you go back to them. The same kind of thing happens to multi-tasking apps. Try to go back to an app you were using 3 or 4 applications ago, and it will reload entirely as if it was never even opened. This in mind, you have to keep track of what you have open in the background. I don't think I've ever had anything forse closed or forcefully cleared from memory yet (like a music app that gets shut down because too much ram is being used), but I can imagine this being the case if you've got too many concurrent applications all fighting for memory.
tl:dr I don't have any kind of bad performance while in an app, but I do note occasional lag and skips when jumping from app to app, or jumping from app to home screen (and vice versa). The Nexus 6p really kind of spoils your expectations for all android devices, I guess.
