*doh* . I've only dropped mine once but it was from my chair to carpeted floor. No damage.
Dropped mine 3 times already onto hardwood. Feel like a moron but the screen and body are still in perfect condition. I would say you have one from a bad batch.

Sorry to hear but it all depends on the angle of drop
It landed face down. I turned it in for a red one. They said it must be a defect lol. Loving the red one

My phone is matte, soft-touch black...not slippery at all, grippable and not-droppable for sure. Although I wish I had the glossy backing, as they're MUCH more scratch/finger-print resistant. Oh well!

:-( dropped face down on concrete. Happy to say gorilla glass doing its job. Got a light chip on the front bezel and light scratches on the physical button.
Can I do anything about this to even out the scratch or do I have to just move on

there is scratch removal kit for acrylic, not sure it will work, you might want to try it
I would freak out if I drop my new phone lucky nothing broke down.
I don't even dare to think about dropping it. My sg1 was capable of independent flight and survive it due to that little edge around the glass.

DZ tech Duo pictures Yellow/Black case
Got the yellow one in, and the case feels good. I don't think the wife likes it as she thought the yellow would match the phone color. Not a bad case at all for $16. Once i get her maximum zagg protection on it, she may use it naked.

My commuter otterbox I really like but it fits so tight it starts to pull up my zagg screen protector on the sides. My wife has this Duo case and I really like it so I just ordered the red one. The only thing I don't like is it does interfere with the flash and pics taken are have a yellowish tint all around the main object. However the case is easy to remove so any pics in low light I'll remove the case

So tonight my phone decided to take a flight down some stairs. Down 4 metal stairs on a metro bus each being nearly a foot tall. Picked it up thinking it'd have major scratches or cracked screen. I looked it over and nothing. No scratches on body or screen. I was so relieved. No case or screen protector on it. My phone likes to be naked.
Attached is the stairs it went down.

Ah that sucks! The shirt pocket got me before also. I just watched a you tube video on dropping a note 2 several times on the ground and no screen damage. In the video the screen was falling face down. I think the corner impacts are what really do it. Sorry for your loss hope you have insurance

I dropped mine for the first time last night. Note 2 in Case Mate Pop case holstered in my Seidio Active holster hooked onto my shoulder strap of my back pack and some how it detached itself from the holster and fell flat, back first. My heart dropped when I heard the sound of my N2 hitting the ground! Phone survived with only minor dents/scratches on the case corners.
Wondering how much internal damage was done?.....

Yeah, the corner is the worst due to the small surface area hitting the ground.

Even with a brand new phone, i noticed tiny scratches ( you have to use a magnifying glass or slowly rotate it in the right light to see)
and phone has been no where near the insides of any pocket or un raised over any surface with my case. it hasn't seen a single touch or wipe.
some have called them surface stress scratches due to manufacturing.

Funny you mention it, my buddies camera was terrible, looked foggy and blurry...his lens is scratched really really badly. My camera works great, but when I looked it was also really badly scratched, we both use the same case too. It sucks that it picks up scratches so easily.

maybe the finish is different.. my D800 looks like it just came out of the box.. I don't use a case
My verizon one looks like crap. Looks cloudy due to abrasions. I am really good about not putting the phone in my pocket with keys and stuff. I don 't know but when I look in the light I see a worn looking spot that does not look right... like abrasion wear or something. I think it affects my picture quality. Don't think pictures are properly focused because of it.
I have had so many Samsung phones, and I have dropped all of them in so many ways and have never had a broken screen. I got my S5 on Thursday and got a case right away. Today my phone fell face down from my chair like 12 inches high. To my disappointment, my phone got a crack on the screen from side to side. So much for that gorilla 3 screen.
Sent from my SM-G900T using XDA Premium 4 mobile app

It's crazy cause I have dropped phones from a huge distance and been okay and then other times I have dropped them from a couple feet and they broke. It's all in how they land but that is why I have purchased a glass screen protector for all of my latest devices cause it's a small price to pay to know that your phone screen will make it through a drop. Sorry to hear though! It sucks royally! Good luck to ya...

I feel bad for you - I have had that happen with other phones and I know that sinking feeling you get in your stomach as soon as you realize the screen is cracked - I am hoping you had insurance?
That really sucks, sorry to hear about your phone. Looks like I'll be investing in another tempered glass screen protector. They really do help against cracks. I dropped my note 3 from about 4 feet and the screen protector shattered, but my screen was untouched. I was amazed.

Ouch! So sorry to hear this, man. Best of luck. I hope you can work them for a replacement.
Sent from my SM-G900T using Tapatalk
Bummer man, all in how it lands, even with a case there's always a chance that the shock will hit just right (or wrong). I don't even bother with cases anymore because I always see people with their shattered phone screens in big cases. I think cases are probably the best for avoiding nicks to the body of the phone, but most are not gonna prevent a cracked screen.
i think if you didn't have the case, the screen would have shattered to an extent of being unusable, so it could have been worst. Typically, decent cases protect small falls due to the case's lip. I guess you were very unlucky.

Well you can still purchase insurance or a extended warranty. Also, if you purchased the phone with a premium credit card, your credit card company will fix it for you for free.
All of the broken screen threads blame the phone, and it always seems to be some ridiculous drop. "I dropped my phone two inches onto a pile of cotton balls and unicorn fur...screen shattered".
Gorilla glass is not break resistant, it is scratch resistant. It sucks that your screen is broken, but in no way is it Corning's or Samsung's fault.

Been SO curious about the glass screen protectors. you like them? I have always used the PET (hard plastic ones not the 3m film) and think they are great. Does the glass ones scratch less than the PET film ones?
OP, that really sucks man! However, If you dont want to use insurance (its probably about a $150 deductible) if you can live with it for a couple weeks, replacement glass should start popping up on ebay and such. I have replaced glass for many friends on a lot of different phones and its SUPER easy. You can usually buy a kit with the tools you need and everything for less than $20. :good:
