Same problem on stock jb 4.1.1
Hello i've the same problem on Stock JB 4.1.1 almost all the times I wake up the phone from standby i see. SD was removed..... and then Preparing SD Card. Is there a sw or hw problem? What can i try to solve it?
Thank you
Hi, I've got exactly same problem. I'm on stock jelly bean 4.1.1 not rooted not moded in any way. Card 33gb sdhc class 4.
I have formated this card few times in phone and still same thing happens.
This has never happened on stock ics firmwares.
Has anyone got a solution for this?
Please post your thoughts/opinion.
Thank you!
This seems to be an issue with the card controller itself or the controller drivers, I've been trying to fix it for ages and can't seem do any progress on it though. There is a possibility that it's ahardware fault of the phone.

hi, what brand is your memory card?
---------- Post added at 02:08 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:03 PM ----------
just been speaking to samsung rep over the phone, they said that if this is not samsung branded memory card they can't provide any support for this issue... very dissapointing!
This has happened to my sd card too. Took plenty of pix yesterday and after that this "Preparing SD card", add also "blank SD card" notices started to pop up everytime. Got scared for my files, fortunately, this morning, I was able to detect the card from the PC. I Backup files and restarted the phone. The same notices. Decided to format the card from the phone but still the same. I just kept the card in the phone. Guess what, this afternoon I could again access the files from the sd card--that with formatting from the phone. But it alternated with the above mentioned notices.
So, has anybody already validated that it is an HW problem?

Same problem here,i am thinking our Quad core cpu is burning the SD card slot!
I have notice the cpu is laying right under the sd card slot so when our quad core gets high temp,it slowly burns our micro sd card.
This happens to my moms s3 and mine too, might be a failure from SAMSUNG.
This happened to me as well, Stock JB 4.1.1, with a (presumably) genuine Sandisk 32GB class 4 card. It began after I updated to JB, first with "updating SD" every time I woke the phone from standby, then frequent errors saying the SD card was corrupt, and finally that it was blank. I tried reformatting but the SD card eventually became unreadable in either the phone or my PC - it simply wasn't recognised at all. I replaced the SD card and I haven't had another issue but I do wonder if it is just a matter of time before the errors begin again.
i have spoke to samsung rep again, and this time lady was great help but i need to send my phone to their repair centre for a software reflash, which is different to phone reset.
and if the failure will repeat after this, ill have to send it again but on the third occasion ill have new replacement.
hopefully itll get sorted by just reflashing.
ill keep you updated if you're interested.
thanks,

I made a post about this awhile back too. I thought I was the only one but this happens randomly to me. I thought it had to do with the media scanner, but apparently a lot of us have the problem.
I just get it randomly though.

I had the exact same problem with my 32GB class 10 sandisk card (original, I think), after 3 months of use.
I got a new card and the problem is gone. I thought it was a faulty sd card, but I seems i´m not the only that had this issue... Maybe it´s an hardware problem on our gs3?
Please keep us updated :good:
PS: I tried my old card on 2 stock roms and CM10, so i guess it´s not a software issue. I alse tried to format my card multiple times and no luck.
But it´s wired that h2testw did not show any errors on my card!
I have been using a SanDisk 32GB class 10 for about 3 months and everything was perfect....until I started experiencing same issues as mentioned: Sd card blank, sd card error, unsupported format etc.
First I thought this was caused by custom kernel, but after flashing the stock kernel I was still having the same problems.
As this nasty error keeps happening repeatedly the sd card becomes unreadable and I ended up formatting the card in a pc.
However, I found out that it's not necessary to format the card. All you have to do is mounting the card in another device/pc and then back in to the phone (without formatting).
Anyways, I had enough of that sh*t so I removed the card. A couple of days later I put the card back in phone and it's been working perfectly ever since.
So at first the card worked flawlessly, then later it was blank/unsupported/removed for a week or something and now it's back to normal.
I haven't installed or flashed anything different than before so I guess it's a manufacturer hardware flaw.
I hope this headache doesn't happen again.
PS: My friend has a gs3 as well and we have identical sd cards (bought at same time and in the same shop). However, he NEVER had a single error with his. So how can this be explained???!!
Hi,
Just a quick question. Have you been using infuse car dock and started to experience memory cards issues afterwards?
For me this only happened in stock jelly bean. Flashed back to ICS, problem solved.

Let me start out by saying that I have searched for any threads that have covered this, and have come up empty.
This has happened twice to me in the last two months. Running task650's V.9, which is an awesome ROM. I've got a Lexar Class 10 32gb card. Twice in two months have I booted up and the media scanner would show a broken sd card notice. I tried booting the phone without the card, and then re-installed the card. Same notice of bad sd card on boot.
At this point I took the card and stuck it in a laptop, which generated a "can not open due to corrupt or unreadable file" and "reformat drive" or something like that. I was forced to format, losing photos, vids, and TiBu folder. I synced to Dropbox and got the backup folder re-installed.
Any ideas about what could have corrupted the card? I suppose the card could be damaged. I paid good bucks, as it is not a low end card. Replace the card? Any guidance would be appreciated.
I have a Lexar Class 10 32GB card. Same issue, after first time reformatted and same thing happened a week or two later.
I did an RMA with Lexar, think there is a 1 year warranty. Got a new card, been working fine the past several months.
Ok. Thanks for the input. I've got a Kingston Class 10 on the way.
I was hoping it wasn't in the phone hardware.
Thanks, I just reminded myself to do a backup of that card itself to my PC.
Sorry to hear about your problem though.

Yeah, I lost some New Years day photos and vids with my wife. I'll NEVER find her in that good of a mood again!
It makes me wonder about my decision to place my TiBu folder on the external card, along with Nandroid backups. True, it syncs to Drop Box for TiBu but do I need the extra headache of wondering if my card is going to get smoked again? I suppose I should be backing it all up to pc..
I'm not sure but it seems to be a problem with the phone and class 10 cards.
My first one was a 16gb class 10 micro sd that one day just decided to stop working (lasted a month or so). Couldn't access it via the phone or PC.
So I went out and got a 32gb class 10 and after a month or so again it stopped working
Knowing this I refused to buy a class 10 card again. I went to Walmart and got the cheapest 32gb micro sd (Sandisk class 4) and so far so good. no problems at all
Lost everything I had too on the first 2 cards so learned the hard way to do backups to my PC.
Not the class, it's probably the brand. Some brands have terrible quality control, especially if you go for a cheaper one. I have one from Amazon Basic and it works just fine. My brother uses one from SanDisk with zero problem.
Class 10 is also newer. The technology to manufacture these is not that old. I suspect some manufacturers still need to refine their process.

Transcend Class 10 32GB Card
Works in PC, HTC Desire - no probs.
Put in Galaxy S2, it starts Media Scanning, a few seconds later reports SD Card Damaged, requires formatting.
It's right - take it back out (again, umpteenth time!), put it in PC or HTC - card is "damaged". (Nothing permanent, can reformat.)
Samsung support claim to not know anything - mind you they "play dumb" about the camera "pink spot" issue, until you challenge them to get real...
Oh, dear!

Sounds like a brand issue, but have you ever tried checking the drive for errors?
Given that even your PC gives you a "damaged" message, it may not work. Once inserted, go to "My Computer," get to properties, and check for errors (enable the "automatically fix file system errors" option). In the past, this has corrected "corrupted" SD cards for me.

The only corruptions I have experienced on this phone were when using MTP to transfer files from the PC. Since I stopped using MTP and use only USB Storage mounting, I have not had any more problems.
I've actually experienced this twice. Both times flashing to AOKP. I'm not blaming AOKP but just saying. The first time even my PC wouldn't read it and it needed to be reformatted. The second time my pc could read it and after nandroiding back to shostock2 it was fine.

There seems to be a prevalent issue in the latest jelly bean update in Galaxy S2 and Galaxy S3. All is smooth but after sometime this error pops up "Sd card unexpectedly removed" and then "Preparing Sd card".
This is related to the micro SD cards and not the internal storage memory.
In lots of forums people keep speaking about hardware issue! But I can assure you that it is not a hardware issue since I am now running CM9 stable for Galaxy S2 i9100 and the card is working fine with no error whatsoever.
There is an app called SD Card Monitor to check whether the SD card is being unmounted.
So there is no problem in ICS ROMs. My father's Galaxy S3 started giving the error once he updated to the official Samsung Jelly bean stock. If I run any jelly bean ROMs based on the Samsung stock I get these notifications in my phone plus the app SD Card Monitor reports a lot of bad unmounts. Around 15 to 16 in a span of 5 minutes.
The card I use is 32gb micro SD class 4 Transcend. People have reported same issues with Sandisk and even Samsung branded micro SDs. I really doubt some unwanted changes Samsung might have put in their code in Jelly Bean which makes these errors pop up.
I am posting this issue so that the developers would know that such an issue exists in the latest Samsung Jelly bean official ROMs and other ROMs based on the Samsung Stock.
Currently I am running ICS 4.0.4 CM9 Stable. I have formatted the card in Windows under Fat32. I have even tried NTFS and exFat. The unmounting issue was always there in the Samsung Jelly Bean but there is no issue in ICS.

In order to confirm, I have tried variety of ROMs.This issue popped up in Chameleon, NeatROM and also CM10.1. Now When I am running NeatRom ICS version there is no issue. I also checked with CM9. There is no issue. This has to be something related to Samsung. There are lots of discussions out there where Galaxy S3 is destroying SD cards. Something has to be done.
Not much hype is created because the worst that can happen is a dead SD card. Well High capacity SD cards are not cheap.
Confirmed issue in Samsung Jelly Bean Sources for Galaxy S2 i9100 and Galaxy S3 i9300. Possibly on other Samsung Jelly bean sources as well.
Issue mostly happens on high capacity cards, maybe 16gb or above.
Most affected brands - Sandisk, Transcend.
No issue when running ICS sources.

That's not necessarily a fact because my "SD card unexpectedly removed" started when I was still on ICS, and haven't been rectified with the new JB releases.
After reading quite a lot I am inclined to think it's a hardware fault - either the SD card slot and connectors or the SD cards itself.
Everyone here seems to be dead set that it must be a Sandisk problem, but I have this problem with 2 different A-DATA 32GB class 10 cards.
UPDATE:
If you have experienced this 'SD card unexpectedly removed' problem,
please go to the following defect issue, and click the star to register yourself as another user with the problem...

Also, please add this note and link to the OP to hopefully catch people when they first see this thread, and encourage them to go there and register before getting lost in this rabbit hole (i.e. a real solution might not exist outside of fixing some code somewhere within the OS itself).
The reason for error "SD card Unexpectedly" in my phone was bad sectors on the sd card. When I replaced the sd card in shop with new one the error "SD card Unexpectedly" isn't showing again.
Again back to square one!

Well, I have reason to believe because my observations point me that way.
There is no hardware fault whatsoever as I have been using an 8gb Card without any issues. Now a 16gb Card without any issues.
Maybe your issue might be a hardware fault, that doesn't mean everybody has a hardware fault. When people say so you got to read everything. Even in my post I have specifically mentioned I had no issues in ICS. Please don't mix up everything.
"If your issues started with ICS that means you may have a problematic card or problematic hardware"
In my case I can assure you there is no problem with the card because it works perfectly in other Android devices and my phone does not have a hardware problem because 16gb and 8gb cards work perfectly in it.
I hope I have made myself VERY CLEAR.
Hey all,
I am having the same issue. The card may or may not be read by my laptop either, it's about 50/50. I was able to copy all the data off, thankfully. I know this isn't the S4 forum, but it's the same issue, hope you don't mind. I didn't see an S4 forum with this issue, unless I missed it.
Anyway, I read somewhere that this may be caused because the SD card was connected while rooting the phone. I don't know how true that is, but I gave it a shot. I re-rooted my phone with the card removed. Then, I formatted the card (FAT32, 32KB) in my laptop. I did a full format, not a quick one. I did NOT format the card after I put it back in my phone. Then, I copied all the content back to the card (card in phone).
it's been ok for a few days now. Could this have been helpful? Is it possible having it connected while rooting is causing an issue? I'll update here if it starts acting up again.

I don't think rooting is the cause for that (I will give you an opinion from the s2 perspective) usually in our device either the card is loose, or some rom has some bugs, next time it happens just try carefully cleaning it with a dry cloth and insert it firmly, also do not remove again unless that problem occurs again, frequent SD card changers have had problems like this since they remove their SD card often, which makes it slightly loose.

Just adding to the information already gathered ....
Probably not rooting and may not be device specific. May be related to JB - some posts elsewhere suggest that the problems started happening on S2/3 devices after a JB upgrade from ICS. I have a Galaxy S4, non-rooted, put in a brand new Samsung 64GB SDHC Class 10 and got the problem after a day. Started happening when I was using the Video Camera - not sure if this is significant.
It got so bad that the phone started complaining that the SD card was corrupt. When I put it on a PC - there were no problems with the SD or the files on it.
So I'm going to try formatting the SD card (as exFAT) on my PC and see what happens. I'll let you know how this gets on - not too hopeful that this will fix the problem.
Had same issue with two Transcend 32gb cards. In both cases, after unexpected unmount sd cards were completely dead...
Same problem on Galaxy s2 with CM10.1 and Sandisk 32gb class 10.
No solution yet?
I have the same issue with my 32GB Sandisk card.
This happens on my S2 and S3. After a night of unmount bug my sd card is dead.
I had issues with a 64GB card on my S3 that I thought would end when I got my S4. It didn't.
I'd be scrolling down in Titanium to restore my apps and the card would be "removed unexpectedly".
I just put in a brand new card and haven't had any issues since.
For people who ended up with dead card - did you use ext sd for camera storage, or torrent dowload, etc?
Maybe frequent read/writte on jb at one point corrupts and kills ext sd. Just thinking loudly.
Now I am using 3rd (!) card - storage for photos and everything else is on internal. So far is ok. In previous (and fatal) cases, both of cards died after 3 months of usage.

That doesn't mean it's hardware issue. It means - after software issue of your phone, it became hardware issue for your card.
If you really want to test, buy another card, use it with ICS, and then you will see if it is hardware issue...
Ok, after buying a cheap and corrupted 64gb micro sd card, I went and spent the money on a 64gb sandisk card. It works just fine. Now, I am rooted and have synergy rom build 104 which is also running fine. I noticed before I flashed the rom that cwm wouldn't recognize my external sd card. I read up on that and found that cwm won't read cards formatted to exfat. So, I formatted the card to fat32 and remounted, transferred all my music back onto the card. Everything worked just fine until I plugged my phone into my computer. I was able to open and navigate through the files like normal, except when I went to open the music folder where all my mp3s were. I tried this on 2 different computers and on both the computer froze with the sand timer. The phone itself was fine, my music player(poweramp) was and is able to play the files with no issue. Also, when I unmounted the card and put it into a card reader and then connected the card reader to my computer and voila! Everything was fine, I was able to open the music folder and scan through the music files. I am not sure what the issue is. Can anyone shed some light as to whether this is a phone/rom issue, a micro sd card issue, an mp3 issue? Any ideas would be appreciated.
That sounds like a bad sd card. Have you ran a checkdisk on it?

If it's a SanDisk 64GB MicroSDXC UHS-1 then they have a replacement program where the older cards had issues in the S3/S4 devices. They sent me a free replacement and everything seems to be working. No Damaged card errors as of yet.

Hm, been searching around for this exact issue. Coworkers S4 with this exact SD card has been getting the removed unexpectedly error. Reformatted a few times, restarted phone, error comes back. It's in my Note 2 at the moment for troubleshooting, and so far so good, but this makes me move more toward an actual SD card issue in combination with the s4, and not the phone itself.

It's in my Note 2 at the moment for troubleshooting, and so far so good, but this makes me move more toward an actual SD card issue in combination with the s4, and not the phone itself.

The SanDisk issue only affects the Galaxy S3/S4 as they told me. My other 64gb Sandisk card works just fine in my tablet.

If it's a SanDisk 64GB MicroSDXC UHS-1 then they have a replacement program where the older cards had issues in the S3/S4 devices. They sent me a free replacement and everything seems to be working. No Damaged card errors as of yet.

I called them and they are going to exchange it out for me. The weird thing is that I didn't get any damaged card error messages on the phone itself. It mounted it as soon as I popped it in. Even after formatting to fat32, it mounted right away with no issues. It only happened a couple days after I transferred all my music onto it. Is the free replacement they give you a newer card or newer model number?
+1 to the above. SanDisk told me they have a new version of the 64gig card with updated firmware, specifically for the S4. Package tracking shows mine is to be delivered on Monday.

Yeah, the guy said they were having stock issues and said it would take 3 weeks for mine to ship. Oh well, at least they are exchanging it. Thanks for the help guys!

So are all 64GB cards having issues, like other brands? I want a 64 bc my backups are freaking huge and taking up space. And with being rooted how would I transfer everything to the new card without messing up the phone?

So when this card tanks, I have to drop the big money on a card specifically made for this phone. Is this a problem with existing cards or did Samsung do something that required this firmware change?

They told me that too. My guess is it's due to the mass recall of the chips for the S3/S4. They said it's not present in Tablets so my 64GB in my tablet would be fine.
+1 problem with Sandisk 64Gb UH-1 card. Unexpected removal error. I am writing just for statistics. Just got my new Verizon S4 - and have problems...
FYI - I'm having a similar issue with a Samsung 64GD card. Got it to see the music for a while yesterday but after a reboot it can no longer see it.
Update, I received my new card and just popped it in. My phone automatically formatted it to exFAT. I'm not going to try changing it to FAT32, but is there any version or way I can get cwm to recognize the card in exFAT format? I tried TWRP, but when I flashed a rom it soft bricked the phone so I would like to stick with cwm.
I did the ODIN to MI3 last night and now no matter what I do the device will reboot shortly after it turns on and starts to update the apps and Sprint configuration. I've gone into stock recovery and wiped data, I've rooted and flashed stock MI5, I've even ODIN'd to MI3 just now and it still continues to reboot. Any ideas?
So I saw somewhere that someone removed their 64GB SD card and it fixed the issue, and sure enough it is working fine now. Anyone know how to fix the SD card to where it will work with the device?

I actually have a 64GB in mine, but even tho i havent faced random reboots, i notice something weird in the gallery after a while. I'm not completely sure, but i think my friend who gave me the 64GB micro SD must have gotten it from China or so. I plan to pick up a 32GB from a local store nearby.

I bought mine about a month ago from Best Buy. It works fine in every other phone and causes no issues.
If you are using TWRP the 64gb SD card must be formatted to FAT32. Even if the card is already fat32 it has to be freshly formatted. I know this isn't directly related to your reboot issue up I would give it a shot

64gb MicroSD Card fix that worked for me
I had this issue too. I would remove my card once it booted and it would work fine until I had to restart my phone again. The fix that I stumbled on that I have found that works for me is to. Goto Settings- WiFi - Advanced - and uncheck "Always Allow Scanning"
It's mentioned in the previously posted article link. Just confirming that it fixed my issues.
I too was having this quirk. Uncheck "Always allow scanning" confirmed fix on mine as well.

Hey there, for a while there I had the 4.1.2 OS and everything was just fine.
that untill I started upgreading my OS.
when I upgreaded to a stock 4.2.2 everything was OK on my device except the music who kept skipping like a scratched CD...
I tried many different OS (stock and custom) with no luck.
I thought when i'll upgrage to the 4.3 this problem will be solved, but man I was wrong...
I tried fomatting the SD card, removing it and changing it, with no luck so far.
haven't tried downgrading to 4.1.2 only because I believe there should be a solution for this.
also something that might related, but my device somehow ruined my SD card in a way that is no longer writeable and there's no way to format it from the device or from different forms with my PC and I had a DanDisk Ultra 64GB Micro SDCX which I had for only few months.
what can I do? I looked for solutions all over the internet and only found the "format/remount your SD card" which clearly dosn't work for me.
thatnks in advanced!
If the card won't format using the sd tool on pc then it is faulty, contact the seller for warranty replacement.

thanks for the reply about my SD card, but I already knew that and its not the issue here.
im using a different SD card which works, and the problem is somewhere in my device.
low quality sd cards sometimes make this kind of problems. i've almost same issue with 64 gb chine based no brand card.

are you saying that my SanDisk SD card is a low quality brand...?
and why do people seem to insist to focus on what's obviosly not the the matter.
I don't care about my faulty SD card, its my GS3 that dosn't function correctly that butters me...
