This is old, but I haven't found any related threads so just confirming that 720p MKV playback works flawlessly on the Xperia arc (all builds, firmwares). Unfortunately, it's only with the PAID app DicePlayer: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.inisoft.mediaplayer.dice
It works with all the efnet MKVs I've downloaded (TV shows) but failed with some Blu-Ray ripped MKVs with embedded subtitles.
It's available as a trial to test first: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.inisoft.mediaplayer.trial
YouTube 720p (HQ) also works flawlessly.
HDMI output/mirroring is put to good use with 720p playback (and yes, HDMI output works on any display/TV, not just Sony).
Hi,
I just tried playing one 720p .mkv file ( an old Sienfeld episode) and it does not work smoothly neither with MoboPlayer or DicePlayer .... only works in software mode with both players.
Not all mkv files are the same, so I will try more .....
just tried again with 3 files, two were samples from movies 70mb and 25mb and one full episode, about 400mb , all of them 720p mkv.
NONE played ok with MoboPlayer or DicePlayer, actually both worked only in software mode, video was laggy, sound was delayed or totally crashed. One of the files played almost OK and I think is just a matter of bitrate. It would be very good to know if there is one player that can use hw acceleration for .mkv 720p files.
Well .mkv is just the file container. You'll need to check what codecs are actually used for audio and video compression, if you want to find out what works and what not.
You are right.
mkv is the container. The most usual codecs are .x264 and VC-1
But if the bitrate is too high the files will not be properly played
I use MX Video Player to play videos.
It uses HW acceleration if possible and if not software decoding.
Mx video player is the best player at this time
Just download
1) MX video player Pro 1.3C apk (This pro file easily available just search in Google)
and
2) MX video player Codec for AMRv7 apk (This file is free in market just search in market)
Only MX Video PRO can play HD videos in the proper way? I've just started it out on my Dell Streak 7 and the video was lagging. :/
Best MKV 720 Video Player till now .
DicePlayer Ad.
thanks a lot, I'll try it out!
I'm using MX video player on neo v and is working fine.
Select the Mobile BRAVIA Engine while playing mkv files.

I just want to paste this post from Q&A section so it can be helpful to as much people as it can:
I use Dice player to play mkv videos but not all mkv videos can be played i H/W mode and I think I know why. Developer of DicePlayer wrote in description that Xperia arc can play "720p [email protected]/4.0(some Level 4.0 file have shutter problem)" videos. From what I know scene releases of tv shows and hd movies now need to be converted with 4.1 profile so our arc/arc s can't play it. There is no need to reconvert video to change Profile Level do 4.0 or 3.1 thanks to H264 Level Editor tool. It can change level within 1 second. Tested with justified.s03e04.720p.hdtv.x264-compulsion.mkv. Changed level from 4.1 to 4.0 and still couldn't play it via DicePlayer so I changed it to 3.1 and it worked like a charm.
Don't know why but video still can't be played in MX Video Player.
I just hope this can be usefull to somebody having touble with playing 720p mkv videos.

not able to play 1080p videos smoothly by default player. i tried playing 1080p mkv .im getting video without audio??? any players to play 1080p? i think we can use dice player .Other than dice player???
Suggest me guyz
Thanks,
I'd like to know this too.. im aiming on getting a RZR and want to know what player plays .mkv files the best.. well 720+ videos atleast.. i tried on my TB and just stutters and plays like crap..
i had no problems playing 1080 mp4 music video in the stock player. the video's been downloaded from youtube. however.. there seems to be a problem with mkv audio so if you want to play mkv videos, use MX Video Player. it works just fine and it's free... it's one of the most popular video players on android and it has great performance. if you want to play avi files, you have to switch video to SW mode tho.
Using MX video player this phone is capable of nearly everything. The only thing swedroid had problems with was the bird scene from planet earth in 1080p high profile and ac3 sound.

mx player is a good choice
Hi!
The Best : MX Video Player !!! - is the first video player that performs multi-core decoding !!!. for dual core - performance improvement = 70% than single-core .......what you want more ???
these app store freeware video players are all heavily infested with spyware especially MX i would use VLC as its clean
Mx is good, but
For ac3 audio mx player is an answer on the phone. I usually watc movies on my full hd tv and videos with 624x352 reulution became choppy, They're smooth in mobo and bs player, but they can't use sw for audio and hw for video. In a forum on moto's website that they're working on the ac3 audio codec. That was on 9 november, last year.

Hi folks, I have a problem with the Razr's video capabilities.
On the Galaxy SII I've used Dice Player to watch 1080p mkv video files but on the Razr Dice Player only shows a scrambled coloured picture. I got in contact with the developer and he said he failed to support the chipset.
Other players like MX Video only play in Software decoding mode which means it's far from fluid.
Do anyone know a possibility to have HW-acceleration for 1080p video files?
None yet that I know of.

Did the developer tell you why he failed to support the chipset? I have the exact same problem you do with DICE too. In fact, on the SGS II, the stock player also plays mkv just fine.
Will hardware acceleration in ICS solve this problem?

This is the answer from the developer:
Hi,
I have tried to fix the issue, but I have failed to fix. Currently I can't support the MOTO devices with OMAP4 and you can only play with Software Player. I'll try to fix it, but I can't say when it is fixed.

On the SGSII I never had problems with 1080p mkv. Maybe it's a problematic file.
Actually it is. SGS II is the only Android device i know of that can play 1080p mkv without problems with even the stock player.
Of course, if you flash for example, Cyanogen 7.x over it, then the stock player is unable to do that. Only DICE can of course.
I figure it has to do with the way the player itself is programmed to support the chipset too and of course, the chipset's capabilities.
Lets hope the DICE developer gets it right for the Razr soon.

More about DICE here and it's limitations(or rather, those of some chipsets).
I got a reply. I told the dev that the OMAP 44XX chip in the Galaxy Nexus is supported so why can't this work. He said it's due to the lack thereof of hardware acceleration natively in Gingerbread.
Once the Razr gets ICS, he'll be able to get that to work too.
Vital player from the market should work no worries
MX player with sw audio decode
Software decoding of mkv = horrible video playback performance.
software for audio only , for some reason mkv dont have sound with hw decode
audio pass through
I want to connect RAZR to Audio-Video receiver with HDMI and have option in video player "audio pass through" to listen 5.1 audio channel in ac3 or dts format in video files.
Does anyone know video player with this option?
You guys should try mobo player. I've used it on my evo, 3vo, Thunderbolt and razr. Works great!

this means we need to wait for the dev to fix it for wait till ICS comes..
Why doesn't mx video player support dts sound?

MX player doesn't play mkv with sound... BS player does
Are you sure mx player doesn't play.mkv in either HW or SW Decoding mode? I know i have to switch it over to SW to get audio on. avi files but the default is HW which does play audio on. mp4 and. wmv. Pretty sure I've watched. mkv with sound before using mx player....

mx player?
I have several 1080p h.264 files in .mov and .avi containers that played perfectly with HW decoding on the AT&T-based GB ROMs. But with all of the ICS ROMs I've tried, they don't open at all in the stock video player. Both VPlayer and MX Player show they're using SW decoding instead of HW decoding.
ROMs I've tried:
SHOstock2 v1.1
Samsung leaked UCPLC5
AOKP 4.04
CM9 Nightly 2012-04-05
UPDATE:
It turns out that the Samsung-based ICS builds no longer support h.264 in Quicktime .mov or Microsoft .avi containers. However remuxing the .mov or .avi file into a Matroska .mkv file using MKVMerge (or other MKV muxing tool) allows the built-in media player to play the files properly and the HW decoding works fine. This also allows MX Player to play the file with HW decoding.
DicePlayer is able to play any of the formats with HW acceleration on both the Samsung-based ROMs as well as on AOKP.
MX Player HW decoding only worked for .mkv on the Samsung-based ICS ROM.
Thanks to everyone who provided feedback.
H.264 works fine for me on Shostock2 v1.1
CM9 (and probably AOKP) will never have hardware-accelerated x/h264 playback due to licensing issues with re-distributing Samsung's proprietary code.
I haven't tried playing movies on UCPLC5 leak (I don't watch movies on such a small screen), but I would go ask in the thread in the developer forum.
Stupid question... did you do a full wipe before flashing?

The other way around. Samsung didn't have time to add file formats support in ICS yet. ICS in many ways is closer to HoneyComb than GingerBread. Galaxy Tab 10.1 owners have suffered this similar issue (only 1/10th of formats will play) from day one. Who says newer OS is always better.

Actually, I am running task650's latest released AOKP rom and it plays my 1080p mp4 and mkv's based on h264 perfectly using HW acceleration @ 10 mbps.
However, It doesn't play my wmv's whereas Samsung based roms do. I'm not too broken up about it though. I just converted any wmvs to mkvs and now they play fine.

DicePlayer is able to play any of the formats with HW acceleration on both the Samsung-based ROMs as well as on AOKP. However I noticed that DicePlayer on the Samsung-based ICS ROM was very smooth playing back 1080p whereas there were noticeable dropped frames playing the same file on AOKP 4.04.
MX Player HW decoding only worked for .mkv on the Samsung-based ICS ROM.

What video player are you using? I'm trying to play an x264 video with MX player and it only plays in SW.
Nevermind... BS player works. I prefer MX player's interface but have no clue why it won't play certain files in HW.

If you like MX Player's interface, you should check out DicePlayer. I don't like it as much as MX Player, but it's UI is allot closer to MX Player than BSPlayer is.
Based on my testing, it seems like MX Player hardware decoding relies on the underlying OS to handle splitting containers into streams whereas DicePlayer and BSPlayer seem to have built-in support for splitting .mov and .wmv.
Hello. My firmware is e97020j
I just noticed that in many players (including a default video player) a video quality isn't good enough .
See attachments for example.
The only good result I got is with a software decoding in a mx player. But I think a software decoding is not a good solution.
In other players like a Dice player or a BS player the picture quality is the same bad as in the MX player with a hardware decoding. So I think maybe after an official JB update something went wrong with a hardware video acceleration. I watched the same video on a samsung GS3 with the same mxplayer with a HW+ decoder and the playback quality was OK. It was the same as in my OG with a SW decoder.
So guys do you have any suggestions?
I have the same problem. Any idea ?
When I installed a SnowJB over the official 20j firmware the problem went away. But the att-JB was much nicer for me, so it would be great if there's any way to fix the video playback on it. I tried a ME's kernel on the stock jb and it didn't solve the problem. Also I tried to lgnpst back to the official ics and the playback quality there was fine, just like in a snowjb and some other android devices I have.
I got the way to fix the problem on stock jellybean. All you have to do is turn on disable hw overlays option in developer options.
