[Q] AOSP ROM Storage Savings Potential? - HTC Droid DNA

How much storage space do you guys anticipate can be freed up if this beauty gets a stripped down ROM on it? I am coming from a 32GB Nexus so I'm going to need to ditch Sense almost immediately.

using the rezound as my guide, sense roms went down from 600 - 700mb to some aosp being around 100 before gapps.

I wouldn't get this phone expecting aosp on it. Buy it if you like it as is. Ril will be a problem for some time depending on who and how many are working on it. Few 4G phones have working data on aosp because of the closed source files needed to make it work. It will have to be reverse engineered so it will take time to do.

[Q] is Evo 3D still worth it?

Hi, im getting the Evo 3D veeery soon (from my dad, he uses it now). I know it's 2 years old phone and i will use it for 1 or more years. My question is, is it still worth it? I will use it MAINLY for Internet, games, YouTube videos etc. Should i have it, or ask him for newer phone? I won't flash any custom ROM, cuz i will use 3D and i need warranty (even thought he has the Otter Box on it )

IMHO I think that it's still a good device with decent specifications, and after all Android 4.o is stil compatible with almost all the apps (games) on Google play store. And yes, I find 3D photos very cool Can I ask you what were you thinking to buy in alternative to evo 3D?
After that, you said you don't want to unlock it not to lose the warrnty but there are unlock methods that make you not lose warranty. I prefer an unlocked device for these reasons:
-If you do a right job, you will not lose warranty
-sense 3.6 custom roms are faster and richer of functions than the stock one (mwakious rom is excellent to take spectacular 3D pictures)
-s2w and usb OTG are becoming day after day always more essential for me, and only custom roms can provide them to me
-AOSP roms are MUCH faster than the sense ones (AOSP rom= 160-170 MB; Sense roms= 385-400 MB ). On previous versions of android I think that HTC sense was essential because added those functions that vanilla android hadn't at all, but I can see that a cyanogenmod 4.2.2 has got all the functions that I need.
-Probably (and we hope asap :fingers-crossed::fingers-crossed::fingers-crossed::fingers-crossed: ) agrabren would provide an AOSP rom with working 3D, so when and if it will happen I think there will be no more reson to stay on stock rom
I hope I have convinced you to come to the dark side lol but at least I hope I was able to convince you that evo is still a good device, even if htc supported it for less than a year and after abandoned it

And you are right! On the paper those phones are beautiful, with hi specifications and so on...but when you get it, their quality is soooooo low, battery hasn't got a decent life time and the whole phone won't last you so long. And you didn't considered the SAR exposure, in "chinese phones" is really high and it increases with the passing of time :s :s :s :s not so healthy at all. But I see that you have an HD2..I am following the porting works for the new 3.0.16 kernel for this device and I think that some really good things are gonna happen
P.S. if you think I helped, you can hit the thanks button if you want

now updating
Ive been using leedroids firmware/rom for the last 2 years, and been great but its not getting slow, and not compatible with apps etc, plus rebooting couple times a week etc
so too am now trying to update, want to stay with sense (as its HTC !)
and of course want to keep the 3D fully working ! (still love using the 3D !)
would be good to have HDMI out still work too ?
so i too am trying to decide what kernal/rom to use !!!
from what i have read over the past day, is that sense 3.6 and below should have working 3D, 4 and upwards will not.
and ICS and under, senseless are working with 3D but not with jellybean ...
can anyone conform this ???

The Evo 3D is still a tremendous phone. It is indeed sort of 2 years old but you definitely don't notice it.
It has pretty much all functions that all other phones offer, and 3d ofcourse
Very satisfied with mine. I use it for internet, facebook etc.
It's a shame that they didn't want to put jellybean on it. With 1GB ram and a 1.2ghz dual core processor it is more than strong enough.
Oh and remember to get a micro SD storage card of 4GB or more if you plan on gaming!
The specs say that it has 4GB of internal space, but 3GB is "locked" and only 1GB is available.

[Q] CM vs GPE

Hey guys,
I've been running Cyanogenmod 10.something on my HTC One T-Mobile since I got it. I am blown away by the customization and the tweaks it has to offer but I've been coming across a lot of problems. Media messaging seems to be unstable, I get picture texts almost a couple days later after someone sends them. The battery also seems to be draining really fast (not sure if its just the HTC One or the CM itself). Despite being a pretty snappy ROM there still seems to be a lot of memory usage, ironically running a launcher with HTC Sense used 35% of memory on average while under CM its typically as high as 65% running the exact same apps and widgets.
Naturally I would like to switch to Google Play edition for the stability, it seems to be what the CM team were trying to emulate with more user control of course. I just want to know what kind of features I would be losing if I do so. Does anyone here have any insight on both ROMs?
Any advice/suggestions here would be very helpful. I haven't been able to find a thread that puts CM against GPE.
Thanks
I'd put my money in any CM custom ROM especially soon as they become more stable.
Couple of things to consider... T-Mobile may be pushing the 4.2.2 upgrade soon. Also, you could try this stock 4.2.2 International ROM here on XDA. I ran this same ROM on an AT&T HTC One with root, S-OFF. Absolutely bug free,
Sorry, I cannot address CM vs GPE,
-T
i would suggest viper rom as it has all the customization you would ever need but sense based. so you will not lose zoe and other sense features.
Here are some screenshots with the venom red theme and some other tweaks

No one talking about kitkat?

Could seriously breathe new life into the tp seeing as how it's supposed to be built to run on lesser hardware.
Sent from my XT1058 using Tapatalk
Well, it did just come out. CM hasn't even started on it. Can't say I expect a build for at least a month, could be wrong though.
It doesn't run better on lesser hardware per se, just uses less RAM. I don't think we've really been having issues with memory, and we're still stuck with our slow Snapdragon S3.
With the amount of devs the TouchPad has, we are relying on just a handful of people to get 4.4 on it. I feel 4.3 barely made it to the TouchPad. I would love Kitkat on my beloved tablet but I hate to say that I have my doubts.

If someone does though, I just hope its as usable as it is currently. I have a Galaxy Nexus and I am already seeing bugs with ports to that device. Which isnt normal with a Nexus device. So the TouchPad may not be any better. Dont get me wrong, I really hope we see something though.

The galaxy nexus is a problematic device. First, google already said no-kitkat for the GN. Second, it's cpu and TI demise.
Your galaxy nexus is now on the list of abandoned nexus devices.
Now, regarding out tablet, first it's a qualcomm so we're not all alone on this one, but it's a very unsuported and old-unknown-binaries rom.
MAYBE someone figures out how to get the camera and bluetooth working. I keep my hopes high.
Not ready
I'm still having problems getting 4.3 settled on my TP. Too many issues (including repartitioning) still need to be solved first.

I am positive that someone will be get Android 4.4 to work especially with the fact that it uses less RAM for running the applications. Usually XDA and Rootzwiki member drmarble helps at getting the initial work for the next version of Android to work. He helped get Android 4.3 (CM 10.1 and 10.2) to work on the Touchpad. And of course JCSullins will help with developing for Android 4.4.
I am sure ROM builders like Milaq and Shumash will provide CM 11 ROMs that are Android 4.4 based although I wouldn't expect to see a CM 11 ROM until January/February at the earliest and until the official CM 11 development has begun.

i just dont see this version becoming popular.
It seems to be more of the integration of other devices and their data harvesting than any user advantages.
Despite the name, and an actual marketing contract with nestle this time, i personally think they chose the right theme colour.
Because its going to be s**t
I see 4.4 more of a stepping stone into a much bigger change to the OS.

There are a lot of good things under the hood in KitKat. It will be interesting to see if anyone manages to get it running, especially with ART. Too bad my TouchPad is moving on to another owner. Finally decided to pull the trigger on a 2013 Nexus 7 LTE.

Note: Windows users may need to do the following in order to attach the Touchpad with the USB cable.
1. Go into Device manager. You will see "MTP USB Device" under portable devices.
2. Right Click it and select update driver software
3. Select Browse my computer for driver software.
4. Select Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer
5. Select USB Mass Storage Device then click next.

6.To transfer files to PC, turn on USB mass Storage from the USB connection notification on the Android device.
Note(Important): Backup and transfer all your SDcard files to PC. This is a testing build and could wipe files from your SDcard data.
[Note(Important): I would recommend increasing the size of your System Partition for this build. After my install I had 398/400MB free, so Flash the 512MB zip below or use Tailor to adjust the size.
Note(Important): This is an Android Open Source Project (AOSP) rom not a CyanogenMod (CM) rom. Dirty flashing an AOSP rom over a CM rom can causes errors and rebooting issues. Always do a clean install when moving from CM to AOSP and vise versa.

[Q] KitKat on Legend

Hi,
I've read that KitKat would need less resource compared to JB.
Since there are already ROM's based on JB for the Legend, do you think that a custom ROM will rapidly appear based on KitKat for this phone?
Thanks.
No.I don't think there are any developers left on this forum.
I too believe this won't happen, sadly. JB for Legend wasn't such a good idea, it simply can't run smoothly on that device. But, if what google says is true (about the hardware requirements), then 4.4 could be the greatest thing that has happened to this phone in a while. I still use my Legend as an mp3 player, but i would just love it if it was more functional, so i could use it in some high-risk situations (to avoid breaking my GN4). This could be Legends last chance to die with honor
Personally I have the Baked Blackbean Rom on my Legend (JB thus) and I'm rather satisfied of this Rom (thank you to the team BTW).
It lags a bit and there are some bugs but it allows me to play with the latest versions of the apps (I love the latest version of gmail for example).
Give it a try if you haven't already. The Legend deserves a better end than as a mere MP3 player .

I'm also using JB on my Legend, but it is not really that stable (don't get me wrong, congrats to the developers, they did a great job), but it just feels too "heavy" on the phone. My biggest problem was the low amount of internal memory - yes, i know you can create a partition on the sd card, but i've never managed to accomplish it. Tried everything, just wouldn't work. So I really can't use the latest app version, as i can have about three apps installed at a time xD
Yeah, I know exactly what you mean. The app that launches 10 sec after you put your finger on it...
For the internal storage, I use Link2SD, which actually works pretty well. When I check, it tells me that I got something like 280MB in use and still have 70MB free.
I just created like you said a second partition (using a soft [named Mini-Tool if I remember correctly] in Windows while my phone was plugged in USB) and then using this second partition to install my apps.
Are you interested in trying again ? You have another phone but, anyway...
I've been part of legend community for about 2 years now, never got into full blown deving, rather doing relatively small mods, tweeks and stuff for personal use only (read, cutting my teeth with android).
Activity in legend has unfortunately died over the past 3-6 months and I haven't seen much from our last major Dev zeubea for long time, so unless there is a skilled Dev equal or better than zeubea out there that loves the HTC legend, its not going to happen. Even then given that jb version never really got finished to stable version, I very much doubt KitKat would come anywhere near the level that jb reached simply due to lack of source code for the required harware drivers...
Ya never know your luck in a big city...

Well, let's hope such a developer exists than...
KK has been ported to the HTC Desire so there's hope
and sorry to hijack, but is anyone willing to test some gapps? Would be appreciated, cheers!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=47101145&postcount=204
Ah cool! That's indeed a good news!
Thanks for the info.
KK was said to be optimized for devices with 512 MB+ RAM via Project Svelte. The Legend unfortunately doesn't even have that much.
But, I ask, why would everyone ideally want to have their Legends running Android 4.x? I don't understand why because although Gingerbread is now running on less than half of all Android devices, it was the last OS on our phone to run fluidly and with stability. With JB and above, Google's cramming more and more features into Google Play services, which really brings down the space the Legend has in its internal memory for apps. KK just won't run like Google intended to on this device. I just don't understand why people want the latest and greatest on a ~4 year old device. Maybe you have your reasons, and I'll respect that, but I can't think of any reason why personally.
It hurts to say, but with the Legend nearing four years since announcement, this phone isn't worth being developed for anymore. It wasn't that huge of a hit, like the original Desire or the Sensation. Therefore, it tends to be more forgotten. It doesn't have the computing power of neither of these devices, nor does it even come close to it, so while the aforementioned devices are slowly getting the bleeding edge, we'll be getting it slower, if at all.
It's a harsh reality, but if you want the best experience in Android possible, it's time to upgrade. ~Four years, that's around two two-year contracts. For Legend owners in Canada, your contract should have been up just this past summer.
This phone will always be a classic, guiding HTC through its brilliant design language with the HTC One flagship and its variants. Its legacy is shown on the devices that succeeded it. Unfortunately, I don't believe it has anything more to bring.
Hi Asovse1,
Thank you for your opinion.
You're right when you say that 4 years are an eternity for a smartphone but personally right now I can't afford a new device that would have for example the screen quality of the Legend (which has an amoled screen while even recent phone still use LCD). If I buy a new phone around 99 $ (my budget) I would have a screen with a poor resolution so the change is not worthy.
I have a JB Rom on my Legend and I can enjoy the last version of GMail for example that has really cool stuff. And this version of gmail runs rather smoothly on my phone, so why not ?
The Legend doesn't have 512MB RAM, for this reason he wasn't supposed to support ICS, but it worked, so while it works with the new version of Android, I will hope that a talented developer will build a Rom for this fantastic phone .
Or maybe I can wait just a few days ans see what the Moto G has to offer...
Cheers.
Hear hear, someone in the same boat as myself. Still using my Legend for daily use. I am on CM7.2 stable. Only GPS is not reliable. Tried a lot higher roms, never worked out well.

I have 2 One's. Both were stock ATT. Now one is a Dev Edition with 4.3 Sense 5 (64GB model), and the other is now pure GPE (32 GB model). I can tell you this without hesitation, the GPE smokes the other for "smoothness" and accuracy, and the Dev edition battery is dead, while the GPE is still at 60% after one full day of playing side by side. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Sense and BlinkFeed, but no, the GPE is the clear winner here.
I absolutely love HTC sense! Definitely sets the One apart compared to other Android offerings. I'm running stock AT&T (not rooted) and battery life is amazing!

I prefer Sense over Stock, I have used "stock" with my s2, nexus 4 and now nexus 7, but it gets kinda boring.
I'm a massive fan of 3 things:
1. Zoe
2. Blinkfeed
3. The ability to hide apps
I ran CyanogenMod and stock on my S3, S4, and even my One, and have never been happier with an OEM overlay than I am with Sense 5.0. Stoked about 5.5!
Custom sense?
The HTC One is my first android smartphone so I guess I just need clarification. Are there custom ROMs with Sense included?
That could be a dumb question...but only one way to find out.
I really enjoy Sense but I feel like my battery life is taking a hit from it.
