Always fullwipe when you're flashing to a new rom. or when the rom specifies it's a full wipe. or when you jump from a different major version like ICS to JB

If in doubt do a full wipe, stock to custom means wipe ICS to JB wipe 4.1.1 to 4.1.2 wipe if you have problems. Same android version don't wipe.

Yeah, I did a factory reset, wiped cache partition, dalvik cache, and formatted system

do not use safestrap, this gains you lots of bugs and flash failures... it's quite not very 'safe' i think... use RAZRbootstrap instead...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1347767
works perfect for me.
edit: if you're NOT on 2.3.6 the ics ota will NOT work! it's based on 2.3.6's kernel version...

Make sure you are on stock 2.3.6
If you are not on 2.3.6 then you will have to upgrade first and reroot before you can install any ICS ROM.
By the way, which ROM are you trying to install?

Yes, if coming from a GB based rom you should wipe date/factory reset.
Is there any reason why you cant? All you need to do is backup apps/app data with Titanium Backup and then restore once you have fresh rom.

1. Yeah full wipe is recommended if you are downgrading or upgrading to another Android version.
2. If you don't do full wipe there are chances that your CM9 will not bee stable, freezes and lockups here and there
Swyped from Samsung Galaxy SII
What about an ICS stock rom? that's the one I'm using right now . If I install the CM rom, and if I want to downgrade to the stock rom again, could I do that? Thank you for answering.

Yes, you would just flash the stock ROM using Odin, and that would "unroot" your handset in the process.
If you try to switch from stock to a custom ROM, or between different custom ROMs without wiping your data, you can soft or hard-brick your handset. It's not worth the risk.

flashing a stock rom with odin on custom rom with dorimanx

Hi,
I downloaded a stock rom from sammobile ( I9100XWLQ2_I9100XXLQ6_I9100PROLP4_HOME.tar.md5 )
I am pretty sure this is the right one because this has already worked once.
But now my phone hangs during startup. I wait really lot (10 mins) but still it hangs, even I always see the animation of 'S'
I flashed again a custom rom now, but i want a stock rom back. How can i flash?
thanks
You must perform a factory reset from the recovery. Either do it from the custom rom, then flash stock ROM, or flash stock rom, boot into recovery and then wipe /data. Order doesn't matter.

After you flash the stock rom go back into download and flash v4 of Siyah kernel (.tar) , then boot into recovery and do wipe/factory reset.
It is not necessary to install a new kernel, just factory reset from stock recovery

I didnt say it was necessary, I just advised it since Siyah kernel is better then stock anyway for many reasons and since he's into trying new roms its much better to have custom kernel/recovery. Plus the fact that if user was to try flashing a 4.0.3 rom then wipe in stock recovery he would brick his device.
Not sure about brick, AFAIK brick occurs with 4.0.4. Anyway I would prefer more stock-ish kernel like CFroot.

If you thought that, why on earth would you advise him to wipe in stock recovery???? The rom he is trying to flash is 4.0.4
Guess I wasn't reading thoroughly .. I take mt words back.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app
If u r on stock 4.0.4 first change your kernel then try to factory reset.. Everything will be fine... Dont do factory reset on cmw on stock kernel...

Okay, thanks for all the replies. When I flash stock kernel, will clockworkmod be erased? I am just asking.. I know I can easily flash it back

Do you mean flash "stock rom"? Yes if you flash stock rom you will lose cwm and only hav stock recovery.
Once you have flashed your stock rom you should then immediately flash your custom kernel (Like Siyah). Once flashed reboot into recovery (cwm) and wipe data/factory reset.

When flashing a stock ROM (include kernel of course) it overwrite the exists kernel.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app
When you will flash stock rom over custom rom everything will be erased if android version is different if same then you will face problems has phone will not work properly you have to factory reset it first install different kernel use philz it will root your phone directly and installs cmw then factory reset it from cmw.
You can also reset your phone from settings but in between you will face errors this that not working etc. use 1st method your phone will not have brick bug issue.
And for giving thanks use thank button

Is it also possible to flash dorimanx after flashing stock rom?

Reflashing rom

hi, i have a noob question, i dont know so much about repartitioning and other things, my question is, when upgrading a rom it does at normal procces (wipe data and install zip) . im taljking about for example ,i'm now in shostock 3 , it is android 4.1 and if i would back to cm9 , could i do that?. i have a nandroid backup of cm9, can i just restore this backup and i wont have problems without matter the rom i'm coming?, sorry for my english and thanks for the understanding.:good:
I'm not familiar with CM9, but the only issue would be if the ClockworkMod Recovery in the SHOstock3 kernel is compatible with the backup made with thebackup made with CM9. I'm thinking it might not be because the Jebo kernel in SHOstock3 backs up a pre-load partition.
Do You think then that is better flash again cm9 instead of the backup?

Doesn't matter if it doesn't work just flash fresh. Not gonna brick your phone or anything.

How to update a new ROM?

Hey...flashing noobie here. So I just flashed CM10.1 Nightly 20130213 i9300 yesterday. I've been using goomanager so far, I scanned for updates and I've downloaded it. It's CM10.1 Nightly 20130216. My question is...do I just flash away or do I need to make a wipe?
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
Just flash, if it's an update to the same rom (CM10.1 to CM10.1) you don't need to wipe. The exception is when the update changes the Android version, then you may need to wipe.
next time use Q&A section and please search before posting

U have the best results by flashing new roms or updates, when u wipe cache/dalvik cache before and after flashing!

Only when you are flashing a different rom, if it's the same rom you only need to wipe if it's a different Android version or you have problems. That is the golden rule.

Had the same query...so when i flash a different build of ROM..say move from supernexus 2.0 build 3 to 4..do i need to wipe the phone? is there any way i can save all my settings so that i don't have to go through the entire process of setting every thing up again?
You do not have to wipe its your choice .
Wipe is to avoid any potential conflicts.
