Intro: I'm on the official Jelly Bean update, and by updating lost the root I had on ICS. I was one of the unfortunate users that backed up with an older version of Voodoo OTA RootKeeper, before the program updated to account for the JB changes, so my root got wiped even though it was backed up. Well I'm tired of sitting around waiting for exploits, and I treat my tablet with care anyways, so I figure it's finally time to take the plunge and unlock so I can root the thing, right?
Plan: According to this thread, I should run the unlock tool and then flash TWRP, after that I'll be free to flash custom updates and/or replace the whole OS/ROM.
Question: Do I really need to change ROMs in order to root? I've read vague mentions of flashing a zip with the su executable and such, if that works for an unlocked TF201 with the stock JB ROM, that'd save me a lot of trouble of backing up my apps and all that jazz. Does anybody have any info on this?
EDIT: Okay, it seems I can't do it right now. I'm currently getting network access via bluetooth tethering (pdanet app), but the unlock tool seems to explicitly demand wifi, as it tells me there's no network connection available even when I can browse just fine in the browsers and such... so this will have to wait until I can access some wifi.

I just ordered my Sprint Hero online and it should be here by Monday. I have read all the Tutorials on how to root and how to Flash the custom ROMs. But I have two questions which I may have missed in all that reading.
1) Is there a possibility where further down the road an official update will not allow anyone to root their phone?
2) Can I root and do a nandroid backup. And not install any ROM for a while?
My goal is to play with the Stock Sprint Hero for atleast a month or so before I feel the need to try Custom ROMs.

1) If you update via an RUU, there is always a chance that HTC will replace the SPL with something that is uncrackable (or at least currently uncrackable). This occurred with later RUUs, and this is why the Goldcard method is often needed in order to root the phone.
When I had my G1 and received push updates, you needed to effectively "switch off" the auto-update routines to avoid getting a stock update that could prevent rooting further down the line. Since Sprint seem to push OTA updates out to CDMA Hero's so it is always possible that this could cause an issue for rooted ROMs, but I'd have though most custom ROMs would've switched off OTA updates anyway.

I rooted my Sprint Hero, not necessarily for speed, more so I dont have to look at those horrible apps that Sprint doesnt want to let anyone remove.
I successfully rooted, nandroid backed up and removed the Sprint ware and installed THIS OPTIMIZER FILE (love the lockscreen) but have not decided whether I'm going to take the plunge into custom ROM world. I am actually impressed with how this phone runs (for now) and dont yet need to free up internal drive space.
My question is this: Essentially having the stock rom, is the fact my phone is rooted likely to cause a problem with future Sprint updates?
If so, can you unroot and leave the Sprint-crap out or do you have to go back to 100% absolute stock?

So after alot of thinking i've finally decided to take the plunge and upgrade my phone to an android phone. Im liking the atrix and i really wanna go for it, i just got a couple of questions.
The one im planning on getting in unlocked, and rooted, though i can have him unroot it for me. Now my current phone is my 4 year old nokia 5530, running a custom rom i flashed a while back, so i know abit about flashing. Now rooting, this is the 1st time i've heard off it.
Im new to all this, and I get the advantages, but really at the moment all i really need from it is the ability to install non-market apps, but from what i've gathered so far, it seems i cant update OTA to ICS (when its released) without bricking my phone if its rooted?
Isnt there any way to be able to install non-market apps without rooting? Or rather a way to have it rooted and still be able to update when the official ics release is out?

You have a few options, but what you choose is all really up to you.
First, I recall there being a way to sideload (run non-market applications) in Froyo via a script on the computer, but it required being at the computer every time you wanted to load one. But since it's running the official Gingerbread update, you should just be able to change an option to sideload, no hacks and no rooting required.
If you're still interested in rooting, there's a simple root method that could likely be undone, if the device is still new enough to be under warranty. See this thread. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1255548

i had rooted my asus prime.......and my bootloader was still locked, after i rooted my device i also had rootkeeper to protect it incase i update.....to make a long story short, i was so anxious when jelly bean was released i wasnt thinking so i proceeded without temp unroot first before i did the update......so after everything completed i went to restore my root access and it was gone..........was so pissed off, so now from every research i did it says that there is no current root options for the prime jelly bean, anybody knows how to get it back or a way to root again.....im willing to downgrade if i can to get back my root access. please help!!!

I lost root on my TF201 after flashing Craig Gomez's us-tf201-jro03c-10.4.2.15-stock-deodexed.zip ROM. In addition to losing root access, I still had Superuser installed, and it would not grant superuser permission to anything I was trying to use to fix the problem, such as Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper, GooManager, etc. Also, Superuser did not even have superuser permission, but could not be deleted in the File Manager. Another big problem is that I could not boot into recovery, and I could not downgrade to ICS.
After trying a number of possible solutions that I found on this and other sites, I discovered Urkel's Fresh Start 1.0.zip. Here's the post:

If you are at a dead end, I highly recommend that you give this a try! Your bootloader needs to be unlocked, but I had already done that when I was still using ICS. I'm not sure if the unlock tool available on the Asus site will work with JB. All you have to do is download the Urkel's Fresh Start zip file to your computer, unzip it to the same folder on your computer where you have adb and fastboot, add the JB ROM that you want to use to that folder, and rename the ROM file to system.blob. You'll also need to install the drivers on your computer so that it can send data to your TF201. I used the drivers that are on the Microsoft site, but there is a link to some universal drivers in the post above. Connect the cable from your TF201 to a USB port on your computer, and after deciding which option you want to try, double click Fresh Root.bat or Fresh Start.bat. Fresh Start.bat will first install the TWRP 2.2.2.1 recovery (that's what recovery.blob is). It will then install whatever JB ROM you decided to use. I went with the 10.4.2.15 ROM that's now on the ASUS site. The Urkel batch file may then restore root access, but that didn't work for some reason in my case. I think my problem was not mounting \System. You can do this by booting into TWRP recovery that you now have, select the Mount button, and put an X in the top box. In my case it seems that the box becomes unchecked during reboot. I tried it several times and gave up, but there is another simple way to regain root access if you have made it this far. Download Superuser-3.2-arm-signed.zip and flash that using TWRP, and you will at long last have root access once again. I see that this file has already been mentioned in this thread, and it worked like a charm for me.
So why did I want root access to being with? It's because of that stupid GPS problem. GPS isn't really needed on a pad in my opinion, but things like that bug me (pardon the pun)! When I was still using ICS, I unlocked the bootloader, rooted, and then used GooManager to flash TF201_External_GPS.zip. This file allowed the GPS function in my TF201 to work just as well as the GPS in my Samsung Galaxy S2. Also, I see no change when I attach the GPS dongle. What does that tell you? I think for most people with the GPS problem, it's a FIRMWARE problem, not a hardware problem. I'm not having a wifi problem, but I suspect that this is also a firmware problem. If Asus is smart, they have someone reading these blogs to get some ideas on how to fix their problems. Instead, they've spent money sending people a GPS dongle that, at least in some cases, is just a waste of time and money. So I've reinstalled the GPS zip file, and my GPS works...so now Google Maps can tell me where I am. Thanks, I already know that most of the time. Another thing that seemed to help with the GPS problem...disable the stock browser and use the Dolphin browser instead. I have no idea why that should make a difference.

I have an Incredible 4g on Verizon that I acquired during the first week of release. I was fortunate enough to get it unlocked during the time when HTC allowed it from their site. I unlocked the phone, installed TWRP, and rooted my device (I'm not entirely sure how I did this).
It's been over a year now, and my phone is kind of sluggish. How can I go about updating this phone to the latest software? I'd settle for the latest OTA from Verizon, as long as I can keep it rooted.
I'm also willing to flash one of the other kernels, but I dont really have any experience flashing CM or Viper.
So what's the best way to go about doing this? How do you update an already rooted phone? Ideally I'd like to keep all apps/data during the update. Any information or links for how to update appreciated!

HTC SDK API: 4.11

imo - the update is not worth it anyway. they other thread lists the changes... nothing significant.
if your phone is sluggish either find out what is causing it (app, etc), tweak performance using your root, or wipe it and start clean. i would not give up an unlocked, rooted device for this update.

Is this just for stock updates, or for Viper/VM mods as well? I'm willing to step up to 4.3 or 4.4 with one of these custom ROMs, assuming I can keep root.
Is this a complicated process to install one of these custom ROMs (anything special since my phone is so "old")?
Will I have to wipe and install from scratch as well?
You can always clear your cache and davek cache to help improve speeds.

Installing a fresh/new ROM is very easy, and it will indeed require reinstalling apps. However, Look at getting Titanium Backup Root - I highly recommend the Pro version - you can back up all of your apps and data. Once performing a full TiB backup to your external SD card, you can wipe and install a fresh ROM, then restore any/all apps and data backed up with TiB. The app will pick up right where you backed it up, settings and all. You may need to re-set up a few apps (such as email settings).
If you like sense, I recommend ViperLTE. It's very close to stock Sense, but offers several great tweaks you can choose to use (or not). Installing it is easy if you have TWRP recovery installed. If you don't have TRWP installed, look at mdmower's thread for that recovery. I also highly recommend performing a full Nandroid backup to your external SD card before doing anything.

Very true... I, too, lost root after OTA update. I've tried every method I could find to attempt to unlock bootloader now with update... even tried wipe and flash of stock RUU 2.17.605.2: unable to go back to older version due to updated bootloader (wouldn't let me load it).
It'd be nice if HTCdev simply updated for a .bin that'll work... I tried flashing unlock_code.bin from previous experiences... but wouldn't work either. Any rumors of a new method to unlock the new bootloader?

The biggest reason stopping me from rooting is the hassle to flash OTA updates.
If I unlock the bootloader now, rooting in the future won't require a factory reset. Is that right?
Main reason to root for me would be Adaway/minminguard, etc. Are there other uses of rooting which outweigh the hassle of OTA updates?
I just recently purchased a Moto G Power, and I was a little hesitant at first as it seems there isn't a lot of activity for development on the forum yet. However during my investigation, there is a fair amount of people who have recently obtained the device as it's newer, and the information that was provided is extremely helpful. I decided to take the plunge because I was determined to get the hotspot functionality working that is blocked through my carrier (Sprint), and once I completed all of the steps, I realized how easy it was. Many have reported no issues unrooting, updating, and rerooting their devices, and Magisk makes it extremely easy.
i was one of the first to get the device, and it took some time to get used to android 10 rooting process and updating ...
if i see the "update" notification, i think ... ah here we go again, i have to plan that, but
it actually only takes about 20 minutes to do the entire unroot --> update --> reroot thing
so it's a "minor inconvenience"
so why not root straight away?
BTW , your statement is correct, you don't need to wipe for root, but it does get whiped at bootloader unlock,. so do that straight away and save the hassle of losing your config/ apps/data

did the latest update today ( ...124-2 ) with the July security patch
total time ( including 15 minutes waiting for the update to install) was 30 minutes
You can flash full ROM instead.
Grab full ROM from LMSA and get boot from there and regain root.
OTA is not a big deal
