[Q] How to make S-OFF without working ROM? - HTC EVO 3D

Can I make S-OFF without having a working ROM?
I using unbranded device. The device is HTCDev unlocked, HBOOT - 1.49.0018, CWM v4.0.1.4 and it is S-ON.
In order to install a custom ROM i used to wipe "data/factory reset", "cache partition", "Dalvik Cache" and "Battery Stats", then i was copying the boot.img with CMD (with "fastboot flash boot boot.img"), then put the new ROM in my formatted SD card, and install it through Revolutionary CWM.
Now, few months later, i tried to install new ROM ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1507616 ), using the same procedures, but after the installation, when i reboot the device it starts loading the boot animation and then freezes. I tried a few other ROMs and the result was the same. Even i tried to install the previous ROM ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1647674 ), which was on the phone until yesterday, the same thing happens, the animation freezes and i have to take the battery out. My question is can the problem be from the boot.img or from the method that i am using. If the problem is there, will it be useful to install the method "4EXT Recovery". Having in mind that i installed HBOOT - 1.49.0018, CWM v4.0.1.4 which way is more easier and safer.
Thank you in advance!

I would advise you to try to get some other rom(like Yoda's ICS or Cool Sense) to boot on your phone then do the s-off. with your hboot you can do either the downgrade or the wire trick to get s-off

Boot loop after wire trick s-off hboot 1.57.5757

I have tried searching all the forums and can't seem to get or understand the answer. I had my evo 3d unlocked using the htc method and last night used the wire trick to obtain s-off. It worked first try and up I am now s-off but stuck in a boot loop. It turns on says HTC and then reboots and does the same thing over and over. I use the volume and power button and I am able to get into fast boot and see the following:
Juopunutbear
Shooter Xc ship s-off RL
Hboot 1.57.5757
Radio-0.97.10.0808
EMM-boot

I have tried to install my nandroid backup with no success. When I first load hboot it flashes messages about pg86img but too fast to read the whole message.
I am on Sprint running CDmA.. I believe I have to install a rom and kernel but I can't understand how from all the forums I have read. Can someone please spell it out step by step for me?
Thank you in advance

Recovery
Yes I can get into recovery without a problem. I just can't figure out what rom to flash and exactly how to do it? I know this is probably very simple but I'm lost and can't seem to figure out how to flash a rom. I was told if I flash a gsm one by mistake I could brick my phone so I'm looking for any tutorials I can find. Thanks for your quick response.

I will try and write you a little tutorial real quick, ok the rom that I would flash this one, chubbzlou sense 4 rom which you can download here and you will need to flash a good recovery, I would recommend team wins recovery you can download that here and the easiest way to flash that recovery image would be to rename it to "recovery.img" without the quotes obviously and put it in your adb folder ya know with your fastboot.exe and your adb files, and then boot into your boot loader select fastboot and type fastboot flash recovery recovery.img and it will say like "sending recovery, successfully written recovery" then power off your device and boot back in to the bootloader, then select recovery and it will boot into team wins amazing recovery, then what you need to do is also download a super wipe from here and basically once you are booted into recovery select mount and then "mount usb storage" make sure you have your usb cable connected to your phone at this point and then your computer will recognize your phone and then move the rom and the super wipe onto your phone, next step after the rom and super wipe have fully transferred then unmount it from your pc and then click "install" in the team win recovery, then select the superwipe zip and then you will have the option to add another zip, select the sense4 rom zip and then do the swipe to flash, they will both finish after a bit and then reboot your device and you will be good to go, hopefully I helped
Has anyone seen Negalite Bluerom R122 or higher for download?
What is the link?
thanks hossman; I fixed my phone by flashing a rom from hboot 1.57.5757 with 4EXT which works great
The 1.50.5050 should work
Put the ROM.zip on your SD
Make a backup through 4ext first
Wipe all except SD card
Reboot recovery
Wipe again
Flash ROM
Reboot phone
Should boot fine
Sent from my Evo V 4G using XDA Free mobile app

You can downgrade your HBOOT to 1.49.0007..Here is external link: EXTERNAL..and you can also find in Q&A (I think)..You won't have any problems with that HBOOT (1.49.0007)
Also upgrade your recovery to 4ext,set smart flash to enabled, the reason why it is not booting is the kernel is not flashing
( Don't ask me for help as I couldn't care if your phone explodes, eh! )
I have tried to install "4EXT" by fastboot, but it is not booting and i have flashed "CWM 6", but i still can't run any rom
I believe there's a 4ext apk, your only solution is to s-off, where the kernel will flash correctly

[q] help! Phone wont past sprint logo after kernel update!!!

i was previously running Meanrom 6.4 rooted S-ON and i decided to S-OFF my phone
i have RUU my phone and unlock the bootloader through dirtyracun s-off but when i was about to run the final step which is RabiesShot.exe(to S-OFF), my laptop have barely any battery left so i decided to not do that for the time being.
after that, I am still running the RUU 2.13.651.1 - HBOOT 1.19 without Root or any mods.
I decided to flash the "PJ75IMG - Stock Kernel". i renamed it to PJ75IMG and put it on my sdcard and it did successfully flash.
the problem is that my phone wont boot past Sprint Logo(it would suddenly black screen of death).
also, since i have no way of removing the PJ75IMG on the SD card, everytime i try to access recovery, it automatically tries to flash that file then it would exit and reboot automatically.
the only way for me to skip that part is to remove the sdcard.
my TWRP is also gone so i cannot flash any roms.
i have no card reader so i cannot place any stuff on my micro sd. :crying:
i though about downgrading the kernel to the previous working version through fastboot but when i looked for the files, they say downgrading would result in a brick.
is there any way i can maybe fastboot jellybean or ics or the kernel to make my phone work again?
edit:
if i did flash the Jellybean with my current kernel, is there a way to achieve S-OFF?
i also havent found stock jellybean rom that isnt rooted

If i were you, i would go back through the s-off process if you can, that will get you back to stock and s-off, then install latest twrp, and then instal OMJ's custom release of the new JB update, it will give you root and the new update, Install the radios since you are s-off and you are good to go.
You need to finish that last step to gain s-off though lol. You should have waited.
Also, im not sure if that is just the kernel, but if it is, just the kernel and nothing else. Then you should be able to do s-off fine still.
Someone correct me if im wrong, i just learned this whole s-off process today so i could do the update.

the thing is the phone wont even boot past the HTC Logo then it would display black screen of death
edit: i found through google saying the error is rekated to the kernel version and i should downgrade first.
is there any safe/reliable method of downgrading the latest kernel from ota (i did not flash the one with the latest hboot but i am still s-on)
i tried to Fastboot RUU but i got an error saying FAILED (remote: 43 main version check fail)

I had the same problem.
1.remove the PJ75IMG file from exrtenal sd card.
2.reboot to fastboot pres factory reset
3. immidietly press and hold volume down, this should get you to recovery.
4. wipe
5. restore a backup rom
6.reboot
It worked for me after hours of trying other methods.
I just went through a bootloop mess. What i did to get my phone back was to use fastboot and use commands (on my pc) like
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img (for TWRP)
fastboot flash boot boot.img (for Kernel)
That got my phone back up and working.
Have you tried this?

ok i believe, fastboot should get you twrp. As will it get you the boot flash.
Fastboot flash zip (latest twrp)
Fastboot flash boot (ICS sense rom's boot.img extracted from zip) (this will get you the kernel)
Reboot hold vol down and power to get to bootloader
select recovery
Twrp wipe and flash ICS rom you got the boot img from. (this will take a bit because it wont install kernel, but you already have it from step 2)
you should boot into the rom. then re-do Dirty Raccoon installation, go all the way through, and you should now be s-off
re-install twrp
Flash radios in bootloader (fastboot flash zip (.zip for radios) (link one from Original android development jelly bean flashables post) (optional)
Go to twrp, factory reset, wipe cache, wipe dalvic, wipe syste.
Twrp Flash OMJ's custom JB release of this update, or stock with goodies, or jewel-swag.
Wipe cache/Dalvic
reboot.
I think this should work but i would immagine you've tried it already. Im running the new kernel and am experiencing no problems with it.
If you're s-off just use fastboot to flash a new kernel, no need to do a factory reset or anything else.
The kernel and ROM must be installed as a pair, just upgrading one isn't going to work.

[Q] Evo 3D HTC Boot Loop S-On No Backup! HELP!

i cleared everything and i have 2 different roms on the sd but when i install one i get htc boot logo i can get into recovery and hboot which is 1.50 by the way so what do i do? i have no backup and im just confused?
Since you are s-on, you need to make sure you're flashing the kernel separately. Most people have good luck using 4ext with its Smart Flash option.
You have likely hosed up the boot partition/kernel preventing 4ext's Smartflash feature from working. If u enter your recovery via fastboot command prompt you should be able to flash normally and get the rom's kernel to load.
The HTC Unlock/hboot 1.5x Guide (my signature) should help.

It means put your phone in "fastboot usb" mode and from the directory on your PC that contains adb and fastboot issue the following command:
fastboot boot recovery.img
The "recovery.img" parameter is the file name of whatever custom recovery you flashed to root.
After the phone boots up in recovery, just make sure SmartFlash (S-ON) is disabled in the tools menu if you are using 4EXT, then flash the ROM the same way you normally would. This method of starting recovery allows you to flash the boot partition (kernel) from recovery even though you are S-ON.
If you need more information than that, look at the links in the mpgrimm2's signature.

You can't flash with a relocked bootloader. Since the phone is S-ON you need to htcdev unlock the bootloader again after flashing the RUU, then install a custom recovery and you should be able to flash successfully or restore a previous nandroid backup.

It's not clear to me, but it almost sounds like MobilePLazza's problem is that he can't flash the full RUU to get back to stock and not sure if he even has the correct RUU.
Same outcome as the OP, but different problem. Perhaps he will clarify.

ok this is the issure phone is in bootloop now...............i relocked and flashed stock rom (ruu) as i said process 65% goes normal then suddenly shows 100% process complete but still phone in bootloop and im sure nothing is changed in my phone....but i can goto bootloader and even i can unlock phone again.....and i can run fastboot commands ....phone still in s-on.....
@ramjet : even if i flash custom rom after unlocking still my s-on is there to block and its not letting me to process it (no backup is taken b4 im so stupid here)
plz help me to solve this problem i just want this phone to run normally
It looks like you are on a GSM version of the 3d but the process is the same as the Sprint CDMA version we have, just different files (have to trust u on having the right Ruu, recovery, & Rooted Rom files).
Did u put the phone into "fastboot USB" mode, connect to pc and run the Ruu.exe from Windows OS when u did it?
As Ramjet73 was suggesting...
After u unlock the bootloader, are you able to use fastboot commands to flash a recovery.img? ie..
fastboot flash YourRecoveryFileName.img (to install recovery)
Then
fastboot boot YourRecoveryFilename.img (to boot the custom recovery)
Then flash a Rooted Rom from your sdcard with the recovery and reboot.
* keep in mind that you must enter the recovery via the above "fastboot boot.." command prompt every time you want to flash a Rom/kernel with S-on or you will bootloop because the kernel never gets loaded *

Alright, I might as well post in this semi-fresh topic. I tried to change roms tonight and got stuck in a boot loop. It loads the HTC white screen, starts a little past that and then resets. I've tried wiping my data, and both caches. I've made sure SmartFlash is enabled on 4EXT because I'm S-On. I've tried it with SmartFlash disabled, too. I tried fastboot boot recovery.img to install my rom and my kernel. I can't seem to get out of this loop. Any advice?
Glee, please state your full phone/carrier /specs / recovery/rom if you want help. If you are CDMA/Sprint, I suggest you read through the HTC Unlock/Hboot 1.5x Guide (in my signature), specifically the linked post about flashing Roms/kernels via Fastboot/Recovery. Then you will be better prepared to explain what you've done so far.

SOLVED [Q] shooteru - cant get into bootloader after flash attempt

SOLVED
Hey, I have htc evo 3d gsm (shooteru). I unlocked the bootloader using htcdev.com and installed clockworkmod recovery. Then I changed cid to HTC__001 and tried to flash a gingerbread ROM in preparation for using the flashmaniac tool to downgrade my hboot (1.53.0007 -> 1.49.0007).
But when I tried to flash the gb rom the recovery said that installation finished but the phone did nothing after reboot. So I took out the battery and went into bootloader and everything looked the same as before the flash attempt. So I tried once again with same result. Then I powered off the phone and now when I turned it on again it only shows the HTC logo for a few seconds and then nothing (the buttons at the bottom have their lights turned on though).
Any ideas?
Yes, hboot version not compatible with gb rom, and or boot partition didn't get flashed. Unlocked but s-on doesn't let boot partition have write if booted into recovery in a normal way.
So yoy can get boot.img from install zip and flash with fastboot
fastboot flash boot boot.img
Or you can reinstall from recovery if booted from fastboot command.

Somehow got it at least to bootloader, no idea how, just tried taking out battery a few times and charging it a bit and it worked.
Thanks for the advice, didn't realize there was a difference between these flashing methods.

I know , it just didn't work for some reason before.
So I flashed the boot.img and now it's stuck in a boot loop. Tried going to cwm recovery and wiping various caches etc and flashing again, and flashing boot.img again but it still goes into boot loop.
I would just use the flashmaniac's tool anyway because I don't care about any data on the phone or anything, but it seems that it requires the phone to be booted before it can start the downgrade.
What should I do? Try to flash other roms maybe? The one that I have now is EU_Shooter_U-1.20.401.8_ROOTED.
So I extracted a rom.zip from a RUU but it won't flash from cwm "Can't open /sdcard/rom.zip (bad)", should I try to flash it with adb/fastboot? I'm worried that the zip may be broken (even though archive manager integrity check says its fine).
Would this work with shooteru/GSM?
[TOOL] Ultimate Recovery Tool 3.1 (Unbrick, Downgrade, VM Radio Fix/Reset)
I'm thinking it might be a way to sidestep the boot loop problem that I have now, just relock the bootloader and follow the instructions until I get HBoot 1.40.something like the guy in the video?
Do I need some special drivers when using the RUU executables on Windows?
So I've got it to work. The problem was what jcfunk said (both of the things he mentioned, actually), I was trying to flash a GB rom when I should have tried an ICS rom instead (lol). After going to ICS RUU, I did the wire trick (unlimited.io) and now everything works nicely and I can get the latest roms.
Glad to hear.
