I played an episode (avi) of Heroes with XBOX Music+Video (file was in \Videos when connected to my computer).
I also played a 720p episode (mp4) of Halo 4 - Forward Unto Dawn (also in \Videos).
I'm not sure about mkv, though.

I just bought the plex app for windows phone. You simply set up a server on your pc, scan in your media and voila, it's all on your phone. While it does transcribe the files on the fly, it has played ALL of my media over LTE and Wifi. Most of my videos are 720p mkv and I haven't had any issues. The app does have a few hiccups though but works as advertised for the most part.

It's unfortunate that it requires the use of internet access, though.
I'm thinking that my 2GB/month could be eaten up pretty quickly streaming movies.
It would, certainly, think that having a few movies on the phone would be a preferable way of watching.
Then, I could transfer them via Wi-Fi / USB to the phone, at the house, and watch them, on the go.

If 1mb/sec is a fairly standard 720p bitrate, that is roughly 125KB/sec.
2000000KB/sec / 125KB/sec = 16000 seconds
16000 / 60 seconds in a minute = 266 minutes
266 / 60 minutes in an hour = 4 hours
So, can watch two, maybe three, movies PER MONTH.
That's assuming that I do NOTHING ELSE, internet related.

These types of issues are the ones holding me back from switching to windows phone. The lumia 920 looks awesome, but i am too used to the freedoms + apps offered by android. Once these issues are sorted i would love to try out the newer nokia phones

Well you can manually set the streaming bitrate to lessen the data used. However I do see your point. For myself the only time I'm on data is when I'm driving. I use wifi near everywhere else. I'm sure it's just a matter of time before we see a full fledged player for windows phone though.
It is a bit disappointing that there is no MKV player available at this point. But, the most important thing to remember is this is a brand new phone. WP7 didn't do very well, and we all know WP6.5 and lower was just horrible to use effectively. WP8, and Win8 for that matter, are an evolution to what has been available from M$. The integration is amazing. Building apps for Win8 (and being successful) makes it much more appealing to make an app for WP8 (and easier since they are very similar). I would imagine you will see more come from developers soon enough. I expect VLC will do something.
Just read that VLC is beginning to develop for Win8 and WP8.

Remuxing 4,5GB 720p mkv movie -> 3,5gb 720p mp4 under 4min. 720p cartoon took 20sec to remux...
Nothing for MKV yet, similar to all the other OSs as far as I know. The codecs just aren't loaded right off the bat. I had to download VLC for my Android, and the same for my Win7 and Win8 computers. Will be here soon enough, just have to convert for the time being.
Newer HTC and Samsung (starting from 2010 i9000) android phones support mkv out of the box.

I'm looking for advice on media players for the evo 3D - since I originally hoped it'd be a portable player to match the format compatibility of my HTPC. It looks like I was a little optimistic in that regard, primarily because I knew the chip was 1080P capable. My primary issue with blu-ray rips is that when using MoboPlayer and mVideoPlayer - I can usually get my 720P rips to play back video, but I lose the audio. I'm fairly certain that I'm using the unconverted blu-ray audio - and neither of these apps can handle the codec. Is there another app that can do this without having to convert?
I know how to convert the audio easily - but I was hoping for a drag and drop solution. I don't want to end up with large files for my HTPC and different ones for on-the-go use.
Besides that, 1080P videos would be hampered by Android's (or should I say FAT32's) inability to handle files above 4GB. I'd previously heard rumors that in the future Android would be able to able to access XFAT partitions and that might eliminate the file limitation - but I've heard nothing concrete. Anybody have any useful info on this topic?
I know that a certain amount of readers will ask why this is necessary in a portable device, but a lot of us look at these phones as a digital swiss army knife. To me, there's definitely the allure of potentially bringing just the phone and an HDMI cable to my girlfriend's house in order to share a bluray as opposed to bringing the bluray player, disc, cables, etc.
Well - the only partial solution I've found is the arcMedia media player. It supports a52 (AC3) audio, but unfortunately - the 720P video I threw at it played remarkably choppy. Totally unwatchable.
Doh - I guess I'm talking to myself. But in case someone else is reading this in hopes of a solution, I think I've figured out that MoboPlayer and one other media player I just found - can play the audio if I switch to software decoding. Unfortunately, if I do so - 720P video becomes unwatchable. HTC didn't give us surround sound codecs, which is disappointing.
The only possible solution or workaround would be if the video decoding could be handled separately from audio in one of these media players. But I'm not going to get my hopes up.
In the meantime, I guess I better get used to converting AC3 audio in my MKV's - and making sure none of my portable files are above 4 gigs.

OK - I tried IMPlayer+ and Vitalplayer based on recommendations I found elsewhere and neither worked as I'd hoped. Diceplayer however, appears to have done the trick! It's a $5 app, but I'm going to try it for 3 days and test it out first. Thank you very much for the recommendation.
The dev who wrote that software claims the Galaxy S2 is capable of 1080P MKV playback with AC3 audio. I'm going to see if I can track down a similar sample under 4 gigs to test on the Evo 3D. As of now - 720P is working beautifully.
Now there's just two more things that I'm hoping will happen to make this the perfect mobile HD video player:
1) Android somehow allowing a format that accepts files above 4gigs.
2) Actually being able to output 1080P to an external screen via HDMI. I'm sure we'll be able to HDMI mirror the screen, but the file's resolution will be lost in that case. Hopefully Diceplayer or another app will enable HD out.
I'm not holding my breath for either, but I can hope.
Just a couple thoughts. I encode all my videos to .mp4, at their native resolution (1080p for bd, or eve res for dvds). Using a bitrate between 1500-2000 will get u under 2GB for an entire movie and maintain video quality to near original.
As much as I'd like 5.1 surround sound, that really only matters if u can output it via hdmi. In ur case I understand the desire bc u have other media players.
I agree, HTC/android should include support for 5.1 audio, and additionally I feel .Mkv support

Unfortunately, it didn't play smooth even with Diceplayer. Every 3 seconds, there was a little stutter. Which was disappointing, but understandable. I wonder if the Galaxy S2 can really play it better?
Otherwise, the E3D might get to that capability by a little overclocking and/or improved software in the future.

QQ player doesn't play the file well at all - it appears not to use any hardware acceleration.
Unfortunately - the Diceplayer Trial Update (1.4.2) doesn't appear to improve things.
Someone who'd overclocked his E3D to 1.5ghz tested this file and STILL found it lagging on Diceplayer. Which is very disappointing. If anyone's curious, this is the sample I'm talking about:

I was just hoping to get 1080P AC3 MKV playback.
I was just told on another thread that this 1080P file may not play well - only because of the speed of my card. This user claims that his phone with a class 10 microsdhc plays the Conan clip without lag. Apparently my phone (with the stock class 4) must not be able to create enough of a buffer to make up for the memory card's speed. I've got a class 10 memory card arriving tomorrow - and I'll report back then.
This is potentially great news.
I'm not sure if the new memory card played a role - but the latest version of Diceplayer 1.4.4 plays that 1080P MKV with AC3 audio with NO lag on the Evo 3D. I'm pretty happy right now. The only thing I'm hoping for in the future is that somehow we can play files over 4gb so we can actually take advantage of the 1080P capability of this phone.
I know it's use is kinda limited but, there is nothing like watching a movie on my tv. Going to the bathroom you just pick up the phone and watch it on that. Back to the bedroom and its on my tv again.
Probably wouldn't have bought it for myself. got it as a gift.

This is because the netflix app doesn't stream HD to phones so you only get the SD version of the show/movie. Someone claimed to have an HD version but it didn't work for me.

I have been using SPB Mobile DVD to convert the movies I buy or rent. It converts them to .avi.
Then I use the Double Twist player to watch them. It plays avi and just about every other format you can think of.
Most 1.5-2 hour movies convert to about 750 mb. I currently have about 10 movies on my phone
You never know when you are going to want to watch Flight of the Conchords season 2...

I keep all my stuff on my home server and stream it VIA winamp remote program on the server and just logging into winamp.orb.com streams really well, just the web interface is crappy, but it works.
Hey guys, Currently upgraded to a HTC Titan and im wanting to put some of my DVD's ive backed up on my HDD onto my titan.
Ive saved most of my 720p movies as AVI / AVCHD as my PC is also my media centre using XBMC and obviously Zune doesnt recognise them. What im wondering is the best Encoder to transform these into mp4 to play. And what settings i should use to get the most from the movies. Iv'e read i can use Windows Movie Maker to do this. There are 4 main options.
Save as
Windows Phone (large)
Windows Phone (small)
Zune HD
Zune Small
Im a bit torn between which setting, as i want to keep them as HD as possible. I would of thought Windows Phone large, But will this still be 720p? And the Zune HD says 720p but this has a 3.2inch screen doesnt it? Im clueless on this atm. Any advice is brilliant.
NOTE: No files are Warez, they are backups from original Bluray Discs and DVD's. This is mainly to take to bed with me at nights or on the train so i can keep occupied.

You should try qloud server, its not your answer, but you should give it a try. I am amazed how the program works and when you have a good pc you can stream everything you like with a good resolution (depends of bandwith and speed of your computer).

I'll definitely try this for when in at home. Laying in bed or letting the missus hog the tv. I'll have a gander on the market place and test it out.
On a side note, still the question stands of program to turn my avchd and mkv into mp4 and decent settings. Thanks for the replys up to now.
Edit: bloody Nora that's a nice app. And pretty darn cheap I must say. Will give it a full test over today

Why even convert? Just drag and drop on your phone using Zune. And let Zune do the work. It will convert to the best for the phone, which is always good as crap in my opinion. Plus it saves you the process of encoding.
Zune takes forever to convert stuff for me.

I have been away form the android development for a while now as it didnt have the ability to view movies in it nor was there a tv-out. I was wondering if any of the more recent builds have addressed this? I am having a heck of a time finding it via thread search.
Nope, I don't think anyone got TV out working. There were always bigger fish to fry, and with the userbase not really clamoring for it... No dev ever worked on it.
All our code is open source, so anyone can pickup where we left off. I'd say the project is pretty much done tho.
Wait, the Rhodium has TV-Out hardware? I didn't even know it could do that in WinMo! That's... actually kinda cool, although with as dinky as its CPU is I'm not sure just how useful it would be anyway -- who wants to play a 240p YouTube video on a big TV?

It requires an additional dongle, which should have been provided if you got the phone brand new.
I've never used it - I can't imagine videos are a pleasant thing. Perhaps a presentation or pic slideshow would be cool tho.

I have used it and it is actually quite awesome! I have watched full size divx movies using TCPMP/Core both at home on 46" HD (just to test it) and at various hotels/resorts (cause I always have some new movies ready anytime I fly) and the quality is perfect! To my eye the rhods screen and the attached monitor are pixel for pixel identical. HQ youtube looks fantastic, the same as my HTPC playing youtube in 480p. Haven't tried powerpoint yet but the picture slideshow is kinda cool too.
This is just another reason that I love haret/SD builds from XDAndroid. This is a function that I do not use 99% of the time but it IS there when I need it. That and offline GPS are the 2 big ones that keep me attached to WM (and my BT ODBII scanner I guess, but I have a feeling I COULD get this rockin' in android...if I wanted to put in the time )

Really surprised anyone actually uses this, haha. I guess some dev can still pick it up? Has anyone even tried the TV Out in Android? Seriously doubt it works, just curious.
lol, yeah it outputs in VGA only. So you have to set your monitor either to have black bars on the sides or zoom(which is perfect for widescreen movies). I watch all my movies at home streaming using the divx web player so I am used to 480p on my HDTV(they may be a little smoother looking on the HTPC since its outputting 720p). These movies look pretty good to me(tho HD mkv changes everything). And free increases the resolution ten fold!!
Anyway, back on topic... I have never tried in GBX because I do not use an official cable for TV-Out and because of this I have to "trick" WM by changing the registry so that it will recognize my cable as a TV-Out and not just a headset as it senses automatically. It actually has to change the function of the pins of the mini usb and thus the headphone jack of the multifunction dongle. The sheer hackiness of the solution in WM tells me that there is no way in hell that it will work for me in android with my current hardware.
And, to be honest I don't really want it in android. Lets face it, without external power you could probably watch like one TV episode before the battery crapped out(okay, a bit of an exaggeration, I know, but you know what I mean).
EDIT: Even more off topic but I can't resist. I have ordered a usb OTG cable from hong kong for a buck and once I get it my next experiment will be trying to play a movie using TV-Out, off of an external hard drive, hopefully while on external power.
As long as there are still new things to try on my rhod I can put off getting a new phone... but I am running out fast!

Either you haven't tried OMGB, or you're just not aware...
But that build gets as good if not better battery life than WinMo. Thanks to ACL's amazing work reversing the batt driver for WinMo...

Yes I am aware of it, but you are right, I haven't tried it yet. I do see a lot of good things about the battery life, but I am still too fond of WM to call it quits... i know, i know, probably time to "embrace change"!
I actually get great battery life from you guys GBX (I have hacked the crap out of it). I go easily all day and night doing everything and more than in WM. I love them both!

I can now answer half of your question: You definitely have the ability to watch movies on the rhod running android.
I have just installed MX player from the market and am about 20 mins into a 700mb divx movie on GBX0C with kernel 3.4. So far it is playing very well (much better than I expected, especially with no OC!).
MX installed no prob, then when I started it up it said something like "no codec installed. Install from market?" clicked yes, market comes up with Codec for MX Player (armv6), install that then play movie on card. Great!

i can tell you that OMGB rom does not have a tv-out or at least my phone dont recognize the tv-out cable and flat screen to "see" my phone either. i have one of those tv-out HTC Multimedia ACT100 TV Out Cable for HTC Fuze/Touch Pro cables. works in winmo not on android. but i havent tried any special apps either.
speaking on the quality of the output video in Winmo when put on a TV. It has a lot to do with the file your playing obviously. I carry the same sentiment previously mentioned the RCA out and the offline GPS (tomtom) are what keeps me attached to my Phone.
I use the TV out nearly every day I hook it up to the Gym TV to do insanity or P90X, and listen to the audio via BT headset (I already looks like a fool jumping around I don't need to cause more displeasure on people making them endure Tony Horton or Shawn T). The video shows up not perfect, but I have super compressed files, its good enough to tell what the exercise is and how much time is left)
This setup would be perfect If core player (.mp4 files) would accept AVRCP inputs on the rhodium but that is where my perfect setup falls short. I suppose rather then viewing new phones I could purchase a 32gb sd card and just get different file formats of the videos.

I have tried four free divx players on the Google Play Market on my Rhodium running GB0X. The best performance I found was with Seaman Player, I think that is what it was. MX was sketchy for me, and none of them play as sharply as watching the same files in CorePlayer in WinMo.
To keep from getting to far OT, I have the dongle and it works great in WinMo, but given the playback performance on the built-in screen my hopes are not high that we would have good results on TV-out.

Still on pre-release, but AndroidCentral points out that background tasks and fullHD video cause some lags, killing those tasks makes it smooth. For me to be able to play properly coded videos water tight on a $500 device is essential, if it fails to do so I have little reason to prefer this over the Nexus7. We shall see results soon.

Yeah this kinda does worry me, as a big part of why i'm looking at this is to play movies while a travel, he does say its only with HD rips of blue rays, but would be nice to see if it does it with HD movies downloaded via the playstore etc.
might have to wait to see what happens when people get it in their hands.
Of course there are some 2600k videos too to get the maximum out of the Nexus 10, mostly gaming. Anyone with hands on the device should check this out:

well hopefully this isn't going to be a result of google having to beat the retina, if thats the case then i'd much more want a screen of the 1920x1080 res that is really good, and that the processor isn't running at 100% trying to run.
I'll post some 2560x1440 (not upscaled) clips shortly for folks to check out their new toys, along with same clips in 1080p BD bitrates (35Mbps) for comparison testing.

He said he was downloading things in the back. I think a lot of devices lag when you're downloading things.

Original BD is 1920x1080 with avg bitrates of 30-35Mbps. Rips can keep the 1080p res or be downscaled, but bitrates are inevitably lower (for smaller size) as they're intended to be downloaded.
Many devices now can handle 1080p of the "rip" (lowered bitrate) variety, but fewer can smoothly play "remuxed" (original BD bitrate) 1080p content. So to say that a device can playback 1080p is relatively meaningless unless the bitrate is specified. Anything from Youtube would not be a good test, since YT stuff are highly compressed (very low bitrate relative to resolution), and fidelity is substantially compromised.
My expectation is that N10 should handle "normal" 1080p rips (10Mbps), given it's the latest-gen SoC, and that video playback is a staple use. I'm more curious about performance with BD-bitrate content, and 1440p content, hence the pending clip uploads. Admittedly, these would be more for curiosity's sake than for practical use--there is no 1440p content, and BD ISOs won't fit through wifi pipes, HT40 or no.
Subscribing as videos are the #1 thing I use tablets for. There was one video posted in the general section last week that takes advantage of the N10's resolution. A quick browse back a few pages and you'll find it in one of the threads talking about the screen
Playing back laggy HD video is a major concern. Not that I would watch movies on it myself but the last thing Google and Samsung needs is more ammo against them. This being the only somewhat major issue though, unlike the fake issues like no SD, plastic construction, and tablet specific apps(the ipad ones really are not that much better than the iphone ones, except games with HD in the title).
That said, my core 2 duo chugs during some streams so i am guessing if it chugs on the PC, Nexus 7, ipad 4, tf700, it will chug on the Nexus 10 and everything else that isn't an i7.

What kind of streams are you running against your C2D? I find it hard to believe it's choking on even 1080p 24+ bit-rate streams. Are you on some ancient video card that doesn't have acceleration, thereby forcing your CPU to brute-force the decode?

My guess it has something to do with my home group connection or wifi connection in general. Playback through a USB drive or internal storage never chugs though. Although some files still have artifacting.
I would be interested in knowing if this can play 10bit MKV files.

There are many tweaks that can be used to slim down a loaded system, but regarding games & videos, I would set the heapsize to 512m, to start. The next place I would look is swappiness. Usually when running one big app and not task switching, you'd want to increase this so that other processes are cached to virtual memory, freeing ram for your main process. With 2gb ram, though, the opposite might be better, as some apps will periodically wake to check for email, news, chats, etc. In this case I think it would be better to keep those processes in ram so that they don't cause a hit to disk to wake from virtual memory.
In other words, I would definitely try tweaking swappiness, but I don't know which way would be better. I'm going to sub this thread; please post whatever results you experience.

I'd never heard of a 10bit MKV until you brought it up. So I downloaded a sample to see it.
For what it's worth, I just tried it on my Galaxy Note 2.
The gallery player didn't play it (audio only) but it worked OK with MX Player in software decoding mode.
Since this resolution is so high on this device, is the Nexus 10 the 1st. "ULTRA" high resolution mobile device/tablet? Doesn't ultra start around this resolution or so?

Bsplayer is slightly better. Mxplayer will lose audio. But it can get pretty bad even with my note 10.1. Audio n video gets way out of sync.

I've not had any issues previously using MXplayer. However since this video was animated and in Japanese, it might have been completely out of sync, I have no idea
