Why are some bootloaders unlockable? - Sony Xperia P, U, Sola, Go

Hi,
I'm thinking of buying a Xperia U but I know I will eventually want to put CyanogenMod on it. It seems some phones have an non-unlockable bootloader, but why?
Are the phones that are bought through a carrier the non-unlockable ones, but the ones bought full price from a store unlockable?

Just when u are picking up a handset
Type *#*#7378423#*#*
Go to service info and configuration
If bootloader unlock allowed is yes
Then purchase it
Or else say u dun like that color

Some carriers or brands lock their changed firmwares. That is why !

It is something the carriers have asked Sony to do. Sony have done it themselves but requested by the networks. An agreement they have. Sony can unlock it at a service centre but won't because of the agreement.
Annoying really.
Advantages of paying more for a phone upfront instead of getting a contract phone.
Cheers,
Lunar.

To unlock bootloader first you have to remove network lock
So how do I remove it?

You have to use a service like wotanserver. com or fastgsm. com for this. Unfortunately both are paid services.
Ho.... What's the cheper service?
Sent from my WT19i using XDA
Wotanserver charges 14.99 € including 2 free Firmware Updates, FastGSM 19.99 USD. The FastGSM Service requires short circuit TP to GND so you have to open your Phone and remove the sticker under the battery.
I would prefer wotanserver.
Wow! The prices are really high! But Thanks anyway!

If you unlock the warranty of the phone will be voided.
Don't know if wotan server gives proper support or not.
Wotanserver is good many friends of mine said it worked!

Indeed, as said, you need to use paid method, which will remove network lock, enable fastboot and patch the bootloader at once.
Just getting network lock from operator will not enable fastboot.

If I root Sony Xperia U will it unlock phone to all networks?

Hi, I'm in the UK and looking at buying the xperia u for my sister. However it is locked on either o2 or Vodafone, depending on where I buy it from.
My question is how do I unlock the phone to make it sim free, I want to put a t mobile sim in there.
Do I root the phone to make it sim free? Or is there some other method.
Thanks for any help.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Buy it from phones4u and it'll be unlocked. No rooting doesn't unlock
Also depending on what she wants it for the 'U' isn't that great really. If you're buying it out right then get an S off eBay. They go for only around 120-150 area
Sent from my Jellybean Xperia S
O2 will unlock it for free if you have a contract with them (or get someone with a contract to do it).
CPW stock is also unlocked.
You have to install a Custom Rom

are you sure this will work?
Installing a custom rom or rooting the device will not make your phon sim free. If you want a network unlocked phone get it factory unlocked otherwis you will end paying for an unlocking service.

Unlocking Cellphones Becomes Illegal Saturday. Better hurry if you plan on switching.

In October 2012, the Librarian of Congress, who determines exemptions to a strict anti-hacking law called the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), decided that unlocking mobile phones would no longer be allowed. But the librarian provided a 90-day window during which people could still buy a phone and unlock it. That window closes on January 26.
Unlocking a phone frees it from restrictions that keep the device from working on more than one carrier's network, allowing it run on other networks that use the same wireless standard. This can be useful to international travellers who need their phones to work on different networks. Other people just like the freedom of being able to switch carriers as they please.

Maybe this might wake some people up since it is tyranny that directly effects you .

Hmmmm......Just one sentence comes in my mind.... " MARKETING STRATEGY "...............
Honestly it really is impressive to see how in some countries the governemental institutions can only act as businesses little *****es.
In my country, carriers are entitled by law to provide you with a way to unlock your phone 6 month after you signed the contract, on demand.
Thank god in Indonesia there is no Restriction for this... And i already Unlocks mine so it doesnt affect me

in germany it is like this: when u buy a phone with ur contract that lasts at least 2 years (the contract) u get a simlock free phone on nearly all carriers, or you can buy it for the real price (like around 500 euros depending on the phone)
then we have these so called prepaid things, where have no contract in the classic way, and with these u only get simlocked phones, but the carriers have to provide the sim unlock code after 2 years
Yeah it really is different from country to country.
In France, where i'm from, you either buy a full-price phone, either the same phone at a cheaper price but simlocked. But 6 month or 1 year after the signing (depending on the contract), your operator HAVE TO give you the unlock method and the code if you ask.
In Japan, where i live, phones are created by constructor, but sold to operators, wich means each phone model is actually branded. Not only it is sim locked, it is completely hardware locked - for example, the Xperia Ray is only available at Docomo and will not work on the Softbank network. Once your contract is over, well, you either sign again with the same operator or buy a new phone from another ...

i got my xperia z2 today from vodafone uk, really impressed with device as i switched from Galaxy S5. one of the thing that troubling me is the locked bootloader which strick even rooting your device, in other words you are limiting potential power of your phone.

okay a noob question ! but as far as i have read, ALL the Z2 have locked bootloaders ? mine is due to be delivered today, and here is the noob part , how do i check to see if my bootloader is locked ?
Mine is from Vodafone and is bootloader & SIM locked. (Thinking about returning it because if this).

In most cases* if you buy a Sony phone on contract within the UK it'll have a locked bootloader and there is literally nothing that can be done about it.
I learned the hard way with my last Sony device (on contract with Three) so have bought the Z2 off-contract this time round and will pay for a Sim-only plan with Three (this works out cheaper as well).
*Buying on-contract through a third party such as CPW might possibly give you an unlocked bootloader... but it's down to the Network to lock the bootloader permanently and I don't know whether they have this opportunity before CPW ships them to customers

Carphone Warehouse always supply unlocked devices so that's one good reason to go there (i believe the same is true of phones4u but i have no first hand experience of this).

It seems like theres a bit of confusion here between an unlocked bootloader and a sim unlocked handset.........unlocking the bootloader doesn't let you use any sim, likewise if you can use any sim it doesn't mean you have an unlocked bootloader, mine is from phones for you and has no network/sim locks but bootloader is locked altho it says its unlockable..... from what ive seen in forums it seems like only the phones with no network lock have unlockable bootloaders, i cant be more help regarding the bootloader as im new to sony, all i know is its got something to do with installing custom roms and rooting
Just got my phone, ordered from mobiles.co.uk (which is Carphone W)arehouse) and I can confirm that it is both unlocked to any sim and that it's "Rooting Status is "Bootloader unlock allowed: Yes"

Yes if your phone is sim unlocked no doubt it will be bootloader unlocked
And even tho it is unlockable by saying yes means u have to unlock it through the website or through xda and then you will be able to flash custom ROMs but there is hardly no ROMs at the moment give it a few weeks and then you will have a few to pick from
Hopefully if all is good we will be bringing a ROM out for the z2 might be abut Rusty as haven't made any thing since the arc and neo times

If it's SIM locked, Three will unlock it for free (but I doubt it as it's very new). All of their phones are now unlocked, or can be unlocked. I think this even applies to older devices you might already own.
It says this on their website somewhere (check support, or I'll look later for it).
Not sure about the bootloader, but I'd be quite sure it's not locked.
Three sell the z2 with NO sim lock and the bootloader IS unlockable.
