So I want to install a custom ROM on my Phone... - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Right now, I'm not sure which Rom to install.
CM10 or AOKP?
I read a lot of reviews etc. pp. and the outcome is pretty random.
I want something very smooth and ofc super stable! I also hate the battery life of my S3 right now, so what would you reccomend?
I thought about installing this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1720628&highlight=aokp
I never installed a custom rom before, but I hate touchwiz so much that I really want to do it.
Is rooting "safe" atm?
can you link some tutorials for
1) rooting
2) installing CW Recovery?
3) Everything else thats important?

Co0n

Actually the latest iteration of touchwiz is pretty cool! With all the gesture support and all. Only thing I hate is the colour combinations used, the dialer,settings looks ugly with those colours in my opinion. And I jumped into aosp, aokp experience. I loved it at the first install itself. The ui is so cool. Its so visually appealing. But after sometime,I began missing the features in the touchwiz. Like the gesture support. Did u know that what ever full screen app u r using, u can bring down the notification by swiping from the top? Its a nifty cool feature. U can get an app to do it, but this bakes in the ROM itself is so cool. And the camera app, u won't get a better camera app. If u wanna use the aosp cam like 4.2 cam, u can flash on top of it. Anyways what I did is RU the foxhound ROM. And one more thing. The latest leaked 4.1.2,is simply awesome with the multi view feature. U will fall in love with the device with such a multi tasking capability. Anyways, I'm using the foxhound blackened thememd v1.5. I would suggest us use it. Anyways, aokp, aosp are also pretty good. With its on features. Anyways it comes to personal choice. Just browse through the foxhound theme also. And about rooting, flashing, many guides are available in this. Don't be lazy and try searching for it. Its very simple too. Not a biggie!!! Anyways, happy flashing!!!:thumbup:

And u can always dual boot using siyah kernel. I have a Sammy based ROM(foxhound) and jelly bam (which is a cm10,aokp,aosp hybrid) dual booted as secondary rom., though I rarely use it now a days. Especially when the multi view came into the picture.

[Q] Which ROM? What's Voodoo? What's Touchwiz?

I'm due to get my GT10.1 on Thursday and I've been planning what ROM to put on it if one is required.
Firstly, from reading around I see people mention Voodoo sound and there seems to be quite a demand for it. Is this come kind of hack or update to improve sound quality?
Secondly, I'm guessing Touchwiz is Samsung's own UI type thing, kinda like HTC Sense?
Lastly, the ROM
I've looked at a few roms. I like my devices to look and work as intended by the manufacturer, but also have a few extra features.
I looked at Task's ROM but it doesn't seem to include Voodoo stuff from what I've read. I could be wrong though.
The next ROM I found which interests me is Bonsai 0.3.0. I don't usually trust anything outside of XDA, but this looks quite decent and has everything I'd want in a ROM. What are people's experience with it?
I'm guessing that flashing a ROM is as simple as following this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1150732 or this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1130574
Then flashing the ROM from Recovery.
I know these may seem like obvious questions, but I want to be 100% sure that what I've researched is correct before I do anything!

Voodoo isn't built into a rom. That is kernel related. So if you wanna give voodoo a shot you would have to flash pershoots kernel. He has integrated it in. As for roms. if you want touchwhiz and you want it to look stock and act as stock, i threw up a totally stock rom in my thread. Starburst is also a great rom.
Thanks for the reply mate!
I'm thinking of flashing Task650 KME with pershot's kernal (boot-cm_2636.4_ux-oc-xtra-vfpv3-d16_fp-082611.zip).
When I get my tab, how will I know if it's KME or KMB ect?

It should say that somewhere in the about tablet window of settings. Make sure you pick the right kernel from pershoot. I believe that's the right one but just make sure its touchwiz if tasks is touchwiz. Also you might want to see how you like stock. Its pretty good stock.

I am thinking of sticking with Stock as I can't find a ROM I'm 100% happy with the sounds of.
Task's rom sound awesome, but there seem to be a few people with problems. Nothing major, just things like icon res ect.
All I want, is completely stock with TouchWiz and the following:
1. Root
2. Voodoo sound
3. Overclocking to 1.4Ghz
4. Performance
I don't want anything else changing tbh unless it's for enhancements.
I was thinking of cooking my own ROM that meets my requirements but I don't have the time to learn how to do it if I'm honest.
Task's ROM sounds like it meets 99% of my requirements to me, but if anyone has any other suggestions then please do share!
Thanks
Do yourself a favor and stick with the stock ROM. Its the most stable and reliable ROM for the tab 10.1

You can root the tab yourself. What your looking for is all on the kernel side. Stay stock load pershoots kernel. Read the sticky on how to get root and CWM.

Think I'll give this a go too. Will try Task's ROM too to see how they compare and which I prefer.
Just a note: I'm not criticizing Task's ROM. It's excellent work. I'm just trying to get the best out of my Tab for my own use. If I use a Custom it WILL be Task's tbh.
Running Starburst ROM and Pershoot's kernel, Tab runs great!

Only problem is that the build number is XXKG8. When I go to Software update it says no updates found. How do I get it to update to KME? :/
Found something interesting.

I know it's nothing to worry about, I can obviously make my own mind up, was just wondering if it's new.

You need to Flash CW recovery using the guides in the dev area then flash the zip provided in pershot's Kernal thread.
Make sure your device and firmware are compatible.

Best Rom Galaxy S II ???

I get my S II tomorrow and I've been looking around alot to see what the best rom out is, but there's loads of roms available.
What I'm asking is instead of spending multiple hours going through every rom to find out whats good, whats peoples favorites or what would you recommend,
Stuff I need working -
Camera
Onboard Storage
GPS
(These are musts)
I would preferably like things like overclocking stuff that utilizes the dual core 1.2ghz processor.
Any ideas and thanks in advance
With multiple exact same posts as yours .
One their is no bests rom .
Two read the individual rom threads and make up your own mind.
Three if unable to make up your mind stick with stock .
Four posts belongs Q&A
Stuff I need working -
Camera
Onboard Storage
GPS
You should find they come with the phone not the rom .

Firstly sorry for not noticing the many other posts dedicated to this subject.
Secondary, camera etc may come with the phone but it doesn't specifically come with the rom, I have a Xperia Arc at the moment and the freexperia project doesnt have the camera up and running, so I feel like that was a valid question.
All I was asking is what people are using? What you prefer?
Not an index to what you hate and love about every rom

Coming from HTC Desire, I would of asked exactly the same questions. When new ROMS came out on HTC Desire, or the X10, not everything was working right from the start. Even on the ROMS on this phone it seems not everything is working, so surely the question is valid.
most are just themed roms and don't offer much over a rooted and tweaked stock rom.

The most famous roms have all the features your looking for i believe, Better Camera, overclock 1.6 Ghz, Better GPS etc.
But you can't say which one is best cause they all are different in their own way, specially in themes and so on.

@JJEgan, you were right in the other thread... this is getting ridiculous
@OP: there's really not much difference between them. The different ones are probably CM7, MIUI and Oxygen (they're not stable), the rest just have some modifications, and they mostly are stable with everything working. Just see which one has more views and pick one you think you like. Creating a thread like this has absolutely no point, you will get zero information out of it... even if people start answering you, you'll just get a random sample of what some people are using.
Stock
Just root it and add a kernel like niphetamine - get juicedefender too.
Simples.

Villain Rom 2.4.2 best for me. It's based on stock firmware so gps, camera etc is working fine. Browser is laggy though so use Dolphin HD or another one from the market.
You get Villain tweaks too!
Flash the Ninphetamine kernel as its overclocked to 1.6ghz.
Sorted

I agree with some of the others in this thread, just stock is best. Samsung polished the firmware really well and its amazing. Id say just flash a custom kernel if you want to do extra stuff like oc/uv or something. Really the only time i ever switch from stock is to try CM7 then or something. Other than that imo stock is best.
GS2 is the first phone where stock meet all my needs. Ive played with a couple of different roms and usually something happens after the first week.
Most roms in dev section give you a all in one package. So must of the tweaks that you would normally install manually are already preinstalled. This is the fun part about android with so many choices, try a couple out first and see what fits your needs.
This is a valid question, the more popular the phone the more hours of searching it takes. CM7 is buggy as hell. Stay away. Stick with stock and just flash a kernel. Samsung did a good job actually with this phone, especially with the skinning in my opinion. It amazes me people buy a super specd phone like this the install ROMS that strip the phone of it's power. CM7 is taking way too long honestly and it's absurd how buggy it is at this point in the phones release history.

Just a little rectification for OP and others: CM7 is an unstable nightly build officially, but it's usable. I have it for a week now, and I haven't had any serious problems. It's stable and I can use it just like the stock ROM, with very few limitations. I'm not going back to other roms for now
Leomar's revolution is amazing. Lots of customised stuff.
VillainROM for a stock look which allows for easily added tweaks. Friendly thread as well.
Ninphetamine kernel works great with both roms...

I am using Lite'ning 6.1 with speedmod kernel T32 but it has not BLN so I will change kernel.
For me, the rom is perfect but anyway I have not tried more (in GT-i9000 I tried too much)
Cyanogenmod ofcourse
I dont have a rooted SGS2 but Cyanogenmod is on the vids very good and smooth.
There are a few issues but there are not major bugs.
Only A2DP dont work ... And a few another things !

Most stable ROM for newbie?

Hey,
Just got this phone, and I rooted and unlocked it.

Is there something like that for SGS2?

They all pretty much work like stock(except cm7/miui), they just differ by themes and kernels, try a couple of them because everyone is going to recommend different ones.
This is the first phone ive had that didnt need a custom rom. Big ups to Samsung for doing what others cant do. Theres only 2 custom roms CM and MIUI and the rest have tacky themes throughout them. Just like the poster above, grab a stock rom, root it, remove any apps you dont want.
Just stay away from experimental builds and betas, and you should be fine.

Great advice. I am on 2.3.3 now KG2, whats the stable latest stock rom out there (preferable deoxed as i do not want useless apps)? As I heard some of the latest stock rom do not perform well.....?
For a newbie, I would advise to just stay with the stock rom. This phone is already a beast in its stock form and you don't really gain alot from all the custom ROMs and kernels, unlike the SGS1.
can I install Villianrom? is that stock rom with just useless stuff removed?
I don't think deodexed is gonna give any better performance. I'm thinking the other way around.
Anyway I recommend stock KI3 or above and root using cfroot from chainfire.
Then use titanium backup to freeze any bloatware. There are lists around. Just posted one myself. Too long to do again.
Use jkay mods for odexed roms from theme section. Great stuff.
3rd party (market) apps like Launchers, sms, dialers, contacts, etc etc etc can be themed to change look and feel.
Have fun.

AFAIK, VillainROM is basically rooted stock + (standard) Ninphetamine 2.0.5 kernel + VRTweaks, which gives you the option to modify a number of things. I've been using it since version 3.0, and very happy with it.
Why not use the stock ROM then? You have one condition for your pick: you want the most stable ROM. Use the stock Samsung ROM. But then you add "by stable you mean everything works like stock" ... but not stock? What? What do you want?
Usually they want better battery life, and maybe some optimization and tweaks. Any more would fry a noobs brain.
Start talking about kernels and they'll wonder why you're introducing corn into the conversation.

try the hyperdroid
there are ONLY two things i like about custom roms
1. they removed the google voice thing
when double clicking the home button it starts an app
the thing is there is a home lag with that process
its removed in most custom roms (villain roms have something called VRtweaks) really nice stuff
2.increased sensitivity
no idea why samsung implemented this
custom roms that have this feature are snappier
currently running Ki8 with speedmod
i used Cognition 1.6 and have always used it before + black android (amazing)
only reason i switched is because he removed RTL support
using stock Ki8 with speedmod

[Q] Question about ROMS and samsung Apps

just a quick question, When flashing a custom ROM.. will i lose the samsung built in things.. like the Smart Alert? Smart Stay? Popup Player and S Voice?
Ive searched through the threads, but as there are roughly 500 pages to read through lol. was taking me ages.
Yes, as a custom ROM replaces the entire system, you will only get apps that are included in the ROM (in most cases apps based on stock Android), or that you can install from places like Google Play.
I do believe, however, that the S Voice app is powered by Vlingo, an application that you can download separately from Google Play. As for the other applications and features of the stock ROM, I guess you will just have to find replacements for whatever you need on your own.

Not unless they have been removed by the dev or are what is termed bloatware free rom .
But it all depends upon the rom and what it has in its specs non Samsung based custom roms do not have Samsung apps .
~~~####
Custom roms do not replace the entire system neither are they based upon stock Android just because they are custom .
Custom roms are built upon Samsung firmware .
Or built upon Android/Google base firmware or some other port these are of course non Samsung custom roms .
okay, so with Omega the Smart alert stuff works? Direct call? popup Video? uhm, slide palm screenshots? haha. i cant think of the rest.
to be honest, if the ROM's dont have this, it seems like a downgrade, i mean i have setCPU already, and the phone is already blazing fast as stock..
i havnt seen to much that makes it worth losing the Smart Features
Omega has or replaces pretty much everything stock has and more.
If you do like certain stock settings, there are ways to get them back via Omega Kitchen, which accessorizes your whole phone so to speak.
i guess i can always backup my phone and give it a try
okay, so with Omega the Smart alert stuff works? Direct call? popup Video? uhm, slide palm screenshots? haha. i cant think of the rest.
to be honest, if the ROM's dont have this, it seems like a downgrade, i mean i have setCPU already, and the phone is already blazing fast as stock..
i havnt seen to much that makes it worth losing the Smart Features
I've been a huge advocate of AOSP. Even to the point I spent about 6 months learning to build my own from source and release it.
However, there is so much in the Samsung base that even cm10 is of no draw. The feature set is phenominal and anything else really is a downgrade.
Fair enough if you never use them, go aosp. But then your galaxy is hardware only. Its just not right IMHO
But yeah omega of the non AOKP variety has all those features. As do most of the sammy based roms.
They're all much over muchness with a few tweaks here and there. There are lots of sammy roms without much variety
i completely agree with you when you say its a downgrade lol. Im currently using the Omega ROM, and so far its the same, with maybe a TINY few changes here and there with applications.
i cant really see much of a difference overall though.
1 thing i have to work on now..
and that it so learn about Kernals with the Galaxy s3, i dont know what advantages they have lol, i know that having a Custom ROM doesnt mean i have a different Kernal, and im proberly still running the stock one right?
Custom roms come with a kernel but omega uses stock one.
I recommend trying siyah in my signature. The advantage of that is that you can undervolt it.
To clarify, every CPU clock speed has a pre determined voltage it uses. So when your CPU is running x MHz, its always y mV. Undervolting means you could -100mV so x would always be z instead.
Lowering the voltage can increase battery life
sorry if i sound a bit stupid, but yeah im new to this
so i can overclock it, and make it fast, Yet also undervolt it, to keep the battery life up ?
lol, it even sounds stupid when i read it
can anyone tell me please which custom roms also support the "smart stay" funcionality from samsung?
or does none of them support it?
Rom with no issues??
Ive been bouncing around all the JB roms for a while now.... I seem to have a jumble of issues with each one, including;
freezing, reboots, flicker, audio wont work, doesnt want to play audio file (sometimes Gmusic will work sometimes not.. i have an audiobook player that gives me issues too, sometimes,)
Sometimes if very smooth, sometimes not, sometimes its just so crazy laggy!!
At one point i got so frustrated that i wiped evrything! including the storage the card, system.. everything. .... still have issues.
It seems like with every rom there are just more issues...
Is there a JB rom that is running really well? no reboots/freezes everything works well?
Maybe an ICS one? Which was the best ICS rom with zero issues?
The Hybrid RCVII has been pretty much issue-free.
Would like to move to Paranoid/Hybrid for the more fine-grained per-app dpi/layout settings...
JB is still very much a WIP....
and does contain bugs that can be real show stoppers. But if you are wanting a very stable ICS build with several additions that function exceptionally well,
Might I suggest trying flappjaxxx IMM76D UCLF6 build #5.
I feel a bit guilty propping any developer or build over another, simply because we have so many highly skilled developers here, but I must say that after trying every available build for the note that we currently have, the flappjaxxx build is my top pick.
And all of his work comes highly recommended, if I'm asked what I prefer .....g
I'm going to put on my flame retardant suit and wade into the brimstone here and ask why not use the stock ICS ROM and root it. I haven't really seen anything in the various cooked ROMS that makes me want to switch over. THIS IS IN NO WAY A DIG AT ANY DEVELOPER.
I find the stock ICS to really fly and almost anything I need to add I can either find in the Market or here on XDA.
I am waiting for the Note 2 apps to get ported over, but other than that, I am really happy with the stock ROM. It has pretty good battery life and I don't see any real hard evidence that any other ROM has better battery life.
Anyone care to chime in and let me know specifically what I am missing in the cooked ROMs?
Just go stock ICS
Burp
I had a really good, stable stock ICS build. GPS was even great.
On a whim, I flashed BlackStar V, then BlackStar VI. I haven't looked back.:good:
Stock is fine, if you want the bloat, and the lack of kernel enhancements that the devs cook in....
You are obviously going to be fine either way.....g
Freeze the bloat with Titanium backup. What are the kernel enhancements. Not challenging you, but asking because I don't know what they are.
+1 !!!
for all the JB bugs... I would like to stay on ICS, but at the same time I love the paranoid android features ( especially the latest version 2.11 )
so DEV... can we mix the 2 ??
if it come in a CWM flash-able zip ... all you have to do is open it with WINRAR and go to "system/app" and remove the bloat(s) BEFORE you flash it
No rom is perfect. Stock or not. The best you can do in terms of custom are rom built on released firmwares. They will have the least problems. When porting or trying to build something that the manufacturer hasn't released the drivers for problems arise. At this point close to stock ICS is your best bet but you don't get the fun of paranoid or liquid or countless others. I find bleeding edge software fun. Bleeding edge hardware is another thing. Good luck.
I would recomend using a de-bloated ICS rom. As mentioned, the flappjaxxx ROMs are really good. Personally I was unhappy with all the JB roms I had tried and was using CM9 as my DD.
Just last night I tried both the current Slimbean and Liquid(both with the flappjaxxx JB kernel) and I was pleasantly suprised. It was night and day from when I tried them both less than a week ago. Right now I'm using Slimbean and it's working great for my uses. But as you mentioned Gmusic is broke(I use poweramp).
I still have a backup of my CM9, in case I run into any major showstoppers.
I'd recomend checking back fairly often as these JB roms are pretty early in development but getting better at a pretty rapid rate.
A few of the major changes that are made to kernels, prior to our getting them, are init.d support, CIFS support, Boot anim. support, OC/UV support, and GPU support.....just to name a few.
There are several others, but my brain has a difficult time getting past the ones I just mentioned...LOL....g
+100......g
The ROM I always jump back to, is King Kang. It is AOKP with paranoid android features. Per app dpi works great and I haven't had any issues with it.
Sent from my phone using xda premium app
Man, if ya want perftect stay stock, there are always going to be issues with ROMs, Christ there are issues with stock.
As well just to add, the JB ROMs have come a long way in a short time people should stop whining so much.
