first you should know that factory rest will wipe all your application and data and will restore your phone to state you first purchased.
first method:
*#7780# (Factory Reset)
*27673855# (Full Factory Reset)
Second Method :
go to settings find backup and rest then tap on factory data reset.
After factory data reset your phone will restart auto and it will ask you for setup. Thanks:cyclops:

FS restores the current firmware flashed .
So if you upgraded a stock firmware then that's what is restored not the original out of the box firmware .

Hi guys,
I am sorry in advance if it's a stupid question.. I've read a lot of FAQs but I am not sure I understand everything. Sorry about that.
When I do factory reset (which means the same as 'wipe', right?) it does resetting current installed ROM to its original state, right?
So, let's say I am doing factory reset the first time (so currently my phone has store ROM installed) so factory reset will revert all the changes in the installed ROM (such as settings, installed apps, all the data) to its original state - which the phone had since it got ROM installed.
But If I got root (which means I replaced secured kernel with unsecured one) and I installed another customized ROM and for some reason I want to do factory reset again - what's gonna happen?
Will factory reset revert original store ROM back or it will revert manually installed ROM (customized ROM) to its after installation?
And as far as I understood factory reset does nothing with kernel? It only affects ROM? So in the second case , when I use non-store ROM and I am doing factory reset - nothing will happen with my unsecured kernel?
I am stacked here.. Thanks..
When you do a factory reset, regardless of the ROM installed, it erases the /data and /cache partitions of the phone. If you modified the /system partition (remove bloat) it will not undo those modifications. To return to a true factory state, you would need to run an official OEM utilitity, such as an RUU for HTC devices.
I hope that helps.

Thank you, but I am not sure it's clear for me.. So - if I do factory reset - my ROM remains the same. If I have custom ROM - I will have the same ROM after reset - right? It's not gonna be overwritten with a store ROM ?
As he said already... the rom that you have installed will remain until you flash another one, the factory reset only will erase all user data, so your rom will be clean as a fresh install.

hello
I am on siyah custom firmware and as i do factory reset everything gone then i go to cwm recovery and got recovered thanks to root and CWM. So I advice notdo factory reset. If u want to wipe data or catch use recovery mode (vol + & home & power button).
Hi
Have a rooted phone with stock ROM ...
since 2 days camera app is just not starting.. touching it freezes the phone and I have to hard reboot using power button..
Is there anything I can do apart from doing a factory reset or format?? I have taken a titanium backup just now.. BUT don't want to go down this path..
I have cleared the camera app cache and data from settings.. still same issue

Have you rebooted to CWM Recovery and cleared the cache and dalvik cache? Then reboot the phone. See if that helps.

Instead of wiping everything, just download the newest firmware and flash with ODIN.

You mean the latest stock ROM and flash on existing ROM? will it keep data / apps and settings??? I have this
I9300XXALF2_I9300XSAALF2_I9300XXLF2_HOME.tar.md5
use this again with odin ?
What's the advantage of reflash rom v/s factory wipe ??

That isn't the latest firmware, this is: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1646610 (first post)
But yes, flash with ODIN and it will keep your data. CF-Root will still work with it.

Just flashed the one I had (AUS) and worked.. thanks
So should I flash the latest UK (one u listed)?? any diff?? I mean i have the latest AUS, should I stick with that or get the latest UK (downloading -- too slow) and flash that??
Cheers
If the one you have is working fine, I see no need to update.
A different issue is back..
now com.android.phone hangs or crashes while incoming call.. or clock crashes..
I guess a factory reset is needed.. reflash won't fix it?? We need data of
1) whatsapp - titanium backup
2) sms - backup with app
3) google contacts / email etc - already on google
What kind of reset? CWM or ICS inbuilt reset??
Any other alternate for me? or should i flash a diff (UK ROM) perhaps??

Do an inbuilt factory reset..it will wipe all your data..backup all your apps with TB, transfer that backup to extSD...backup sms with SMS backup and restore move that to extSD as well...move your photos and videos to your pc...now reset..
Hi yesterday I flashed the stock 4.1.2 update to my rooted s3 and I had expected to lose all my data and apps so I backed everything up with titanium ready to restore it after the update, surprisingly I didn't lose anything after flashing.
I was just wondering if I was to flash cyanogenmod 4.1.2 would I lose all data and apps this time?
Thanks

No - all your data/apps will stay unless you do a full wipe/factory reset in recovery.

The data will remain, but it is a granted prerequisite to flashing that one must do a factory reset before flashing a new rom. Note: this applies only for a new rom altogether, not updates to the same one!

If I helped you, please hit the thanks button!
You won't lose your apps/data unless you do a wipedata/factory reset . Also some roms pre-request a full wipe in order to the rom to boot .
Wipe may be asked for by the rom maker to avoid conflicts and stop users posting my app stopped this rom working .
Rom may be a wipe rom but not usually .
Personally i never full wipe unless problems but do wipe cache dalvik and system only before any instal .

So technically should I be able to flash cyanogenmod without doing anything but wipe cache and davlik cache?
Thanks again for the help
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
yes, you should be able to.
if you encounter any problems then a full wipe is recommended.
I'd back up your apps/data just in case.
I use stock rom (original) I9300XXEMC2
Kernel 3.0.31-1042335 [email protected] #1
Android version 4.1.2
My phone started to be slow and laggy. When I get a call it takes about three seconds to recognize the caller. I get alot of apps crash, I mean apps suddenly closes(I started to play a short video and then 3G Watchdog and PlayerPro got close).
What could be the reason for the laggs and slowleness of the phone?
Your rom has the sds fix so it might be the fix kicking in to save your phone. First try clearing cache and dalvic in recovery and fixing permissions, if still laggy then factory reset.
what does clear dalvik and catch do? do I need to backup the phone before I do this things? (I'm not talking about the reset only clear)

It clears the cache and clears the dalvik for details use Google but Dalvik is basically VM .
Backup is not relevant to either both are rebuilt on next boot .

ADVANCED.

I don't have advanced...This is the options I have:
reboot system now
apply update from ADB
apply update from external storage
wipe data/factory reset
apply update from cache
You need CWM recovery .
Use Philz from development .

I use rom stock and original kernel I also don't have root.
Is it possible to do it without root and without changing recovery?

If you're not de-odexed (which you won't be since you're not running a custom ROM) there's not a lot "Wiping Dalvik-Cache" will do. Dalvik-Cache is used when you have dispensed with odex.
Essentially, every app you have has an .odex file.
so:
/system/app/MMS.apk
/system/app/MMS.odex
Most custom ROMs are "de-odexed" which means they get rid of all the .odex files and replace them with dalvik-cache files.
Basically what I am saying is you don 't have any to clear.
I wrote that I use stock rom so I don't want to root my phone.
don't suggest things that can't be done or I don't want to
Anyway thatks
I didn't. I told you it's irrelevant.
All you can do is factory reset or flash official roms. Or dummy file generator.
Just read "unusual freezing" thread

Guide to recovery mode on youtube:
Search for:
"How to Wipe Galaxy S3 Cache Partition"
Didn't lose anything.
Still have the problem. Now it also sometimes restart itself.
Any other solutions except root & wipe?
Factory reset .
Still a problem then a service centre is required .
