Lately I began doing some gaming on my GS2 and this has happended to me twice now. one time while playing tiny tower and once on dungeon hunter. I will play with the phone plugged into my pc charging and the battery eventually drains. Is it possible that the games are actually using more juice than it's recharging? I'm currently running latest Unamed Rom.
More that the pc can't charge it quick enough. Wall chargers put out roughly twice the power of a pc usb port.

Its more like 50% more, since the charging for usb is ~440mA, and wall socket is 650mA. Also even at 650mA, at overclocked loads, the battery will still drain...
Damn. Thanks guys! I just ordered a few more batteries and wall charger.
I remember when I had my Captivate playing and recharging at the same time would make the back scorching hot. I bet this phone could do the same so I stray away from doing anything while charging it.
i noticed the same thing while charging via usb and using the phone at the same time. the phone will show that its charging and yet the battery is still dying. I chalked that up to the USB charger not having enough juice to charge it while in use.
as soon as I stop using it, the battery charges fine

Id say its dependant on kernel/rom as well. Im running unnamed and entropy's latest DD kernel (i believe its the kernel that dictates chg rates tho). I get a charge rate of about 1100 mah on pc USB and about 1800 on a wall charger.

Not possible. It's been proven that the charging is limited by the hardware. Anyways USB has a max current of 500mA and the wall charger has a max current of 700mA...

Hi Jo,
Your AT&T unit should have already been bundled with an AC charger no? In your *excitement* over the new phone you may have neglected the WALL charger and it may very well still be in the original Oragne/White AT&T box...

I use this...USB Wall Plug....For $1.90 and free shipping, it works Great!!!! 1000mA output too.
Then all you need is a cable...Charging and Data Cable....for $1.80 with free shipping too.
FYI: Don't be shocked if the shipping takes a couple weeks. I don't complain though for those prices.
So I am eagerly awaiting S-Off and flashing new ROMS/kernels/radios and I started to think about how slow my Rezound seems to charge. I know that the Thunderbolt had some kernels that included fast charge capability. Just think of the extra juice we can get in a short amount of time with FastCharge, UnderVolt/UnderClock, and more precise power management.
Does anyone know if this is in the works for the Rezound?
My Rezound charges up pretty fast, especially compared to my Droid Charge.

if your charging on USB it wont be giving the phone full power, to remedy this get a spare cable and disconnect the data so only the power is working
not sure if it works on the computer, but in my car it definitely worked
yeah definitely do a search for USB AC Charging. You can take those car chargers and wall chargers that don't give you the full 1A and do a quick solder job on them to make them work. I just did it with two of mine and it works great. Battery info now says Charging (AC) instead of charging (USB) and they both pull north of +700mA while charging instead of ~+300mA when on regular USB.
Yeah they called it the charge cause its always on the charger

i did that. opened one up and clipped the green & white data cables. the phone still says "charging usb" though and doesn't seem to charge much faster...
Yea, I have tried every possible method of grounding out the data pins. I currently have my phone connected to a computer power supply I converted to a desktop supply with 4 USB charging ports. It can supply up to 13A if the device needs it. The data pins are all shorted and the housings grounded. The phone still says USB Charging....It does seem to pull more current and does seem to be charging faster.
I know that there is some hardware limit on the charging current, but with an SBC kernel (please someone make one...) I think that this bug will be fixed. I am going to try the Trickle Charge technique from previous HTC phones to get a full 100% charge. I will let you all know how it goes.
Or ...
Fast charging is built in ...
... turn off your phone when charging, and use a 1A charger.
DONE.

So I tested this idea that Fast Charging is "built-in", I used a usb cable that I split connected through an Ammeter to test how much current the phone was drawing from the charger in the one and off state. From my tests I found that my phone, no matter what the state does not draw more than 400mA from the supply. My charger is capable of supplying up to 13A to the four usb ports I installed. I also tested this with the HTC stock charger rated at 1A. This had the same results. I think that there is a hardware/software limit built in.
Just to be clear and justify its place in Dev, this thread is asking if there are any developers out there who are working on an SBC (Superior Battery Charging) Kernel for the Rezound. I fully understand the workings of power supplies (I'm an Electrical Engineer) and am just trying to see if anyone is working on this.
And it still belongs in General. That doesn't justify it. If YOU developed a Kernel, or were posting it, then it could be posted here. Questions, suggestions, complaints, ideas, etc belong in General.
Not sure accurate battery monitor widgets are, but mine has shown upwards of 850mah on charging and over 700 on draw (never saw that on my thunderbolt).
It does seem to slow down as it gets close to full (over 90%), then I never get more than 200mah charge.
So I will get the regular charger for gs3 that comes with the phone (tomorrow when i get the phone). but i also have the HP Touchpad charger which gives output of 2.0A. I was wondering if I charge my phone with the HP charger will it actually charge is faster then the regular gs3 charger? the reason i ask is cause in other threads ppl have mentioned that it only charges faster with non - stock roms like aokp or aosp roms. please lemme know if this will work. thanks

I've used my BlackBerry PlayBook charger on mine and it doesn't charge any faster. That charger is 1.8amp.
It will not charge faster. The phone only draws as much amps as its allowed to. Whether you use a 1 amp charger or a 2 amp charger, it'll only charge at the phones own rate

I don't believe so. The phone only draws what it needs.

A lot of chargers will be rated less than the stock charger. Especially cheap car chargers. In that case the phone can only draw at the charger rating.

The values listed on the charger is the max output it can provide. If the setting on the phone or the hardware is set up to only pull 1A, then it will always pull that unless that is more than what the charger can provide.
That being said, you should be able to take the battery out and charge it faster separate from the phone. I've always read, though, that charging a battery faster ( i.e. turning up the current) will/may reduce the life of the battery

I have a Touchpad charger and it can be used, though I noticed that the phone got hotter than normal, IMO. The phone comes with a 1.0A combo wall charger with USB cable. Interestingly the Samsung stand and battery charger that comes with the spare battery comes with a .7A charger but the charging unit itself is 500mA/1A on the input with output at only 4.2v @ 450/900mA.

I have the same prob. Charged about 7% in 30 mins (using the supplied charger). Charges fine when I use my N7 charger though. I'm gonna have to check the charger when I get home.
Just for the hell of it, here is my how my charge is going right now:
7% - plugged in at 3:22
21% - 3:31
33% - 3:42
44% - 3:52
57% - 4:04
83% - 4:28
For what its worth I don't have this issue with charging - s4 charges comparable to s3 HOWEVER i am not using stock charging that came with the box, I am using cables i have had from before and sometimes even use the USB to wall plugs from Apple and/or BB or whatever I have had lying around - seems to work well.
With a 5V 2 amp charger it goes like a bat out of he'll, using my thunderbolt's 5V 1 amp charger it's quite slow.
Sent from my SCH-I545 using xda premium
i have noticed that having it plugged into either a car charger or a computer, it does NOT charge very quickly... not to the point where it is annoying but, slow enough to notice a difference...
If i take the cable from the box and plug it into my USB hub (it has it's own power source also) if im using it for much other then file transfers i can still lose power off battery. It just seems to slow the battery drain instead of just charging slower then plugged into the wall with the 5V 2amp plug. Now obviously if I'm not doing much with the phone while on the USB it will charge but much slower then the wall charging

Ok, there's something else going on here. Maybe its software related.
My S4 will only charge fast on the supplied charger. The cable doesn't seem to matter; I tested a bunch of them. I have an assortment of other 2A chargers and none do better then barely keeping up with power useage; hardly any charging at all. Again, the usb cord doesn't seem to make any difference.
Now, I've read mention of a "fast charge" feature that the kernel developers are "turning on". I haven't found a good explanation of what exactly that means but it appears to me that Samsung tried to make the device only charge at the full rate using their chargers and at a minimal trickle charge rate for all others even if they are capable of the full 2A output.
Then there is the problem of buying extra Samsung chargers since there appear to be a lot of knock-offs that will not get the phone to charge at full rate.
What a stupid thing to be such a PITA.
Anyone have any solid info on this?
just about every samsumg device either needs a kernel hack or an adapter to get fast charge off of a non-samsung charger. you can grab a few of these:
http://dx.com/p/usb-data-charging-extension-cable-for-samsung-p1000-black-91141
and use them with just about any 2amp charger with no problems on my old galaxy tablets or my galaxy note and nexus getting fast charge(nexus even charges faster on the 2amp - hope i don't blow it up!).
Fast charge from my understanding is just turning off the data connection when plugged into a computer. This allows for higher usb charge rates, it also helps certain wireless charging setups. I am coming from a gnex where this was the terminology, I assume it's similar. Fast charge shouldn't do much for you if you are having trouble with 2amp chargers, but maybe in this case Samsung limits through put when it doesn't recognize the charging unit? If fast charge tweaks somehow disable this, then I guess it's possible you would enjoy increase in charge rate though I have no verification on that.

Well, I have to discount my own theory. I have some off-brand adapter and cable to charge in my car that works great.

There's a problem with semantics going on. Fast charge is exactly what you're used to it being on the GN. What's being referenced here is quick charge, a feature of later Snapdragon SoC's.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk HD
fast charging is rapid charge where near full power is transferred. in the gn2, gnote 10.1, gnex, and gtab10.1 the max i got was ~1600mA with all my 2.1A chargers including the samsung charger. the rapid charge continues to 90% and then switches to trickle - anywhere from 400-900mA til 100%. without the adapter you're stuck at trickle, even at under 90%. some chargers seem to have it built in to rapid charge, but most don't.
i've never gotten a full 2100mA from any charger yet.
you can find schematics on how to build your own adapter in one of these samsung boards. i think there was a very detailed one in the gnote10.1 forum.

The Fast Charge mode on the KT kernel has no impact on AC charge rate, it only affects USB charge rate:
Normally, when you connect to a PC, you get about a 500ma charge rate and the ability to pass data along. When 'Fast Charge' is set, you lose the ability to transfer data, but the 500ma restriction goes away. In practical terms, it means that you should see between 700ma and 900ma as a result.
w/respect to the OP, my experience is weird. When the device was new, I got around 1800ma on stock charger and cable; now, same setup gets me 900-1200 if lucky (even with new battery). When I tried the stock charger with a different (newer) cable, I get around 1600. It's strange that a cable's ability to carry a charge would degrade so quickly (if that's in fact what's happening).
I have no proof, but absolutely believe that kernel can influence max charge rate, because in the past, I've observed max charge rate drop with the release of a new kernel version, then go up again with another release.
Samsung did slow the charging rate in one of the OTAs. People had been complaining about the phones getting too hot.

What are you using to measure that? Qi isn't capable of charging at 1.9a
The galaxy charging current app..
So you've noticed that sometimes your phone seems to take forever to charge, and other times it seems to charge fine? Let me share some ideas that I've learned through lots of research on this exact subject last year...
I have used the galaxy charging app myself. In my opinion, CurrentWidget is better...looks cooler too. Ha.
So other than software related issues, you need to remember that the speed in which your phone charges is highly dependent on the hardware of 3 things:
1) Power Outlet (including power strips, extension cords, USB extenders, etc.)
2) Power Adapter (I highly recommend Anker's products!!!)
3) MicroUSB Charger Cable (if not using the factory Samsung cable or an Anker one, be sure that it's an 11-pin microUSB, and NOT a 5-pin...they look the same!)
Power Outlets - I know for me, if I use the outlet in my livingroom, it takes SO much longer for my phone to charge than it does in my bedroom. Just try this test! Grab that CurrentWidget app from above and try out some different outlets throughout your house, just to see whether or not the voltage varies. I bet you'll see that this is true!
Power Adapter - You should be using either the factory Samsung charger or a reputable 3rd party charger with the equivalent specifications (5V & 2.1A). However, I actually prefer my Anker charger over my Samsung one! If you're finding that you can't get a good charge, try swapping out your adapter with another one.
MicroUSB Charger Cable - As stated with the power adapter, you should also try to stick with your factory cable if possible. HOWEVER, I have found that to daily connecting and disconnecting of the cable with your phone, they probably receive the most wear and tear of anything else, and therefore may need replacement after some time. Again here, I find that using either my Anker cable or Samsung cable will give me the best charge. This is determined by both the CurrentWidget app and the amount of time it actually takes to get a full charge! Keep in mind that using USB extender cables can drastically lower the voltage to your phone - thus causing a very slow charge.
So basically, I know if I need to charge my phone as quickly as possible, I know I should clear my RAM and recent apps, put my phone on airplain mode, and using my Anker charger, I plug-in at the outlet near my closet door! I figured this all out by using these same ideas I just shared with you! Hope this is helpful!
If you can tell the difference between outlets, you need to call an electrician. Not kidding.

I doubt that's entirely true. I mean, think of if they're on different circuits, that kind of thing can vary...also, depending on what you have plugged into your outlets can cause lower outputs I'd assume. I'd bet if you used the app I referred to and ran a test at each of your outlets, and reported back here (being honest of course), that you'd see some differences. Anyways, that was far from the point of the post. But thanks for the insight!

The Samsung power supply is rated for 100 to 240 V @ 0.5 A input. It may be that the power supply is kind of crappy, and varies its output under small variations in input voltage, which is why you see what you see. It really shouldn't...but it wouldn't shock me if it did given that its made for $2 in China. Makes you wonder what would happen if you plugged it into a 240V source. When my wife went to Malaysia last summer to visit her folks, I just put a US to British transformer-less adapter on her Motorola brick and it worked OK plugged into 240V. Maybe the Samsung ones are crappier?
I squared R losses should be reasonably low in household wiring. NEC is 5% drop max at the outlet. And that is like the outlet the farthest from your mains under full rated load. Assuming you live somewhere typical, your voltage at the panel will be 120V+; a lot of time its a few volts over 120. If you have an outlet that is not tripping a breaker go below 100V, you have a problem somewhere. A 20% drop is not normal. Have you put a meter on the outlets with low charge rates?
My friend's OEM s4 charger charges at 1900 ma while my OEM charger only charges at max 1200... Weird how that happens but somehow the cable just stops charging as fast.
