My Samsung infuse just went to ****... yeah definitely not buying another Samsung phone.
Anyway, I have an Atrix from a friend and that's my only alternative until I can upgrade. I don't know where to start. I need root and a custom ROM, preferably some form of CM. I can't find any thread that says how to root, how to install a ROM, or how to install CWM recovery on this phone.

Dude, come on, just admit you didn't search.
It's funny that when I browse the General section some thread easily pops up in my face:

Did this work for you? I rooted a friends eris and like a moron he decided to try and take it in for service because his custom rom was crashing while i was camping. So now i need to return it to stock and tell him he is stuck with stock features.
Hi all, oddly, I can't seem to find a clear answer to this from searching and Google. Does the SII have a separate recovery partition? I see chainfire has created a customised CWM to be deployed with his kernel, but I was puzzled by this as coming from a HTC world, I was wondering how CWM backups up the ROM partitions (or more importantly restores them) if they are in use.

no one?
I would also like to know how this works. Coming from 3 previous HTC phones and buying a SGS2 tomorrow, I wouldn't mind finding out how to root, nandroid and flash correctly.
I know all about Odin already.
Is this the only way?

Then why not read the guides in the development section? step by step guides.
There is also a search function in these forums.
Not being rude, but you are asking to be spoonfed when there are good, well written proven guides to all your questions.

I take it this was a reply to MrBadgerMilk's question? I've looked at the FAQ in the dev section and used search and can't see the answer to the question of whether the SII has a separate recovery partition. Hopefully the people that know (and some will) could just post a yes or no.
Right... http://bit.ly/SGS2answer
Now that's over, no, the SGS2 doesn't have a separate recovery partition. The zImage contains the recovery binary, and another init script is run, when recovery is to be entered, from the standard zImage.
Now that was the answer I was looking for. Thank you very much.
EDIT: Is the video some Samsung secret initiation ritual thing?

Sorry for acting like a total noob. I did a search, but because of the crappy network that orange is, I couldn't ever stay connected long enough to actually get to the results of the search. Now I finally have my sgs 2 on 3 and it's like a breath if fresh air. Sorry again.I can now search without sounding like a noob

Tbh, I think i came off as a bit of a plank. If you keep an eye out for chainfire 'Root/kernel' threads in the dev section you can go far wrong.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399for root/clockwork mod recovery
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278 for step by step guide on how to flash via Odin, and the official roms. I've had the sgs2 for a month now, and after trying the (now deceased) angelom rom, and litening rom, I went back to stock KE7. and tbh, it feels just as quick as the 'customs'. The only thing I would advise is to remove(or freeze) the samsung bloat by using titanium backup. There is another thread somewhere with a list of things you can remove without affecting functionality.

Lol...that's what I was thinking....but my opinion changed when you posted this.
I am new to the forum and I am looking for the easiest way to root my fascinate sch-i500 phone. It has Froyo 2.2.1 currently. Any help is appreciated.
No worries. Use Z4 root, its a one click method which will do what you want rather easily. I posted a link below to a thread which includes the apk file and instructions on how to use it.
Link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833953
If you just want to root, find a one click root app. If you want to flash roms :
One tip: Read the stickies in the Development section. Your better off knowing what your doing instead of blindly following our advice. Sorry if this comes as a bit of a downer, but its for your own good.

^ Yup, he's right...The z4 root apk I posted does work 99.9% of the time without a hitch but sometimes things don't always go as planned and you may end up having to Odin because of it. Like TheSonicEmerald recommended read though the stickies and see what it will take to get your samsung fascinate back up and running again if something were to go wrong. It will save you a lot of time when it does happen, and believe me, if your going to be flashing roms and such things WILL go wrong. This isn't to scare you or anything, it is to assure you if anything goes wrong the forum is here to help. I've learned this one word of advice over my time here and thats, "YOU CAN NEVER BRICK AN ANDROID PHONE."I hope this helped you out a little. Happy modding.
I'm not new to rooting at all, I have rooted several devices. A friend of mine just got a Fascinate and all the info I'm finding seems old and depricated. Will this z4root still work? Is it simple enough for a newb to do? She really just wants root for the wifi tether for root users.
I couldn't agree more. I read a ton of stickies and it paid off big time
Just rooted my Samsung Galaxy S2 AT&T with the Zedomax Kernel and it also flashed Clockworkmod recovery. Everything went great. Can I update the recovery using rom manager? I ask this because the GS2 combines the kernel with the recovery I think and to use rom manager for anything you must flash the recovery from rom manager. Coming from HTC phones where this was never a problem. Just don't want to screw anything up.
Thanks for any help,
Vinny

The forum has been changed radically in the past couple of days, and I'm not sure if this is still evident to new users, but it used to be plastered all over the forum. DO NOT USE ROM MANAGER WITH THIS PHONE.
In particular, you can not install ClockworkMod Recovery from Rom Manager, as it will not work. You must use a ClockworkMod Recovery that is integrated into the kernel. I would suggest that you flash Entropy512's Daily Driver kernel.
It still is plastered.. why don't new people follow the etiquette of any one new to anything that they should read the FAQs!
As you can see by the amount of posts and years I have been a paid member I am no rookie. As for reading before asking, I did. I even went to the search section and asked without any luck so being a long time paid member I thought I could ask without getting my ass chewed out. If you see by my question I already flashed a kernel with CWmod recovery. I asked if I could use Rom Manager to update the Kernel.
Thanks for the help.

To be honest, I didn't even look over in the left column to see your post count before I posted my answer. (I usually do.) However, from the way you worded your question, it is obvious that you are new to this phone and the I-777 forums, even though you are not new to XDA. Over the previous months, there have been a large number of questions asked that are already answered if the person had just read a little first. And your question about ROM Manager, in one form or another, has been one of the chief offenders. You say, "As for reading before asking, I did." But go to the sticky post in this forum, (or the one in the General forum or the similar one in the development forum as they're all about the same) and click on the link that says FAQ topic. You'll see what I meant in my previous post.
Don't get bent out of shape over this. You're an experienced member who can pitch in and help other folks out, so when you come around the forums, do that. The moderators are just asking us all to be responsible.
As mentioned before do not use room manager to flash roms kernels or whatever.you can use it to download different roms but even those can be corrupted or not finished a many users saw with the CM9 build that was posted there.

Nevertheless, had you read the main (and now only) sticky in here or in General, you would know not to use RomManager on this phone and would not have had to ask.
And with that, topic closed.
Search more people... please! Use Google, use XDA.. but SEARCH. REad the FAQ's before posting.. it is FORUM RULES.
Please dont be mad, im a noob. Link the easiest way to install custom rom on this device. I bought this phone in Norway so i guess its the international version. Are there supernexus 4.2.2 for this phone? Can I get EVERYTHING back to stock if something failes and I have to send it in to repair? What happened with my s2 was that powerbutton failed so I could not flash any other kernel or rom. I suck at rooting etc on android, because I think when I was jailbreaking my iphone back in the 3gs days, you could always get it to factory settings with plugging it to pc and do restore. Can I do this to this phone with a toolbox or something? Please post here I have to go now, will check this thread later.
Understanding everything and browsing this site is very hard to me, please understand. I have apex launcher so it looks like stock jellybean but its not so smooth as I want it to, so I think i have to install a custom rom. It must be stable and easy!
I'd love to help but you need to learn the forum rules before you start posting topics. Why don't you check out a few of the sticky threads first and you'll probably learn some new things about when and where to post these questions and heck you might even get many of your questions answered haha.
right first thing to do is read up on these forums on rooting then once you have completed that read again The golden rule to remember is NEVER wipe your DATA from recovery! other than that you should be safe :victory:
use this recovery http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1995002 which as support for sideloading should you get into trouble.
I'm sorry, but I don't understand why you guys that are here and have full control can't link me a thread or something where this is discussed, and then I can post questions there. This place is so advanced so it's hard for us noobs to come in to the scene. I'm good to follow step by step guides and thats it Before I have followed guides on youtube because noone here could give me an answer, but I want to learn a little on how to probably do this because I'm scared to **** up my phone so I cant get it to stock again. I dont care if a rom fails or something, but i always want to come back to stock if you know!
There are guides in the development section of this forum. I suggest you look there as this is a self help forum.

Thanks, will check into it What roms are you all using?
edit: oh and please someone answer me this. If im gonna root-kernel-rom, what is the best way to backup so I can get back to the OS and kernel I have? I dont care about photos apps and sms, just want to go back to software if it fails.
is firmware the same as kernel?
Something is missing in your formula root-(Flash Recovery)-kernel-rom. And in the new Recovery you can do a backup and only there. You can go either for TWRP or CWM recovery.
And if future, if you say "Thanks", better hit a Thanks button under post than write it your reply
