Block OTA with new APN - AT&T LG Optimus G

Changing APN from default blocks OTA and OTA notifications. Copy default minus fota and save then select the new one.
Edit...if you already have the notification this will probably not remove it.

Thank you for this very useful information:good:

Removing fota does nothing.
Setup the new apn your way, then rebooted. OTA still appear still starts with the phone. You need to freeze two services using Titanium Bkup to ensure OTA is disabled. Did it this way, worked for about 2 days without any notice. Fool mproof.

Are you going to share which two services you froze? That would be useful information for the rest of us. Thanks

This worked for me on att, see screenshot E97010o is the updated firmware I am still on the original.

Here guys
Froze these!!!

I'm on the base.05.

I bought my phone on Black Friday and was too busy to mess with it that day. I had WiFi on and overnight it updated itself from version E97010l (IIRC) to E97010o. I haven't had time to read the full FreeGee thread but I believe I have to wait for the unlock method/tool to be updated. Wish I saw this sooner as I assumed it would require me to select to install the OTA update

Good to know! I planned on going through the thread later after work.

So, just by removing "fota", you are protected from OTA? Any side effects from this mod? I want to know that fota's only function is OTA on the phone, can anyone confirm?

Loss of IMEI

Hello to all at XDA, this is my first post so please go easy. On the developers thread for JB on the S3 some people are reporting loss of IMEI after flashing a ROM. What isn't clearly being stated is what is the resultant effect. Does loss of IMEI resultant in a bricked phone?, d
or does it just mean that you would not be able to get a warranty repair but in all other respects the phone works albeit with an immature no guarantees ROM?
Not technically bricked as far as I know. Instead your phone basically turns into a media player. You have no longer access to your cell provider which means you cant make or receive calls/text messages. You won't be able to use data.
For example, its basically an iPhone turning into an iPod touch
I would recommend staying away from flashing anything atm until the guys over here at xda or other place that use their spare time to come up with a solution or conclusion on whether or not IMEI can be recovered

Inter crew, thanks for explaining all that, as an additional question regarding your advice to wait until the IMEI issue is identified, I am in the UK in the 3 network and own a 3 branded S3, my phone is rooted, and I have used Titanium to remove TW pre installed applications that I do not use such as ChatOn, but the ROM is the original stock ROM, my follow up question, when 3 eventually issue a JB update will my phone get it in its current state? Thanks for any answer you give
I seriously doubt it. All of the other phones that I have owned have never taken an update after rooting and freezing apps. This is pure speculation on my part but I would say not able to update.

That doesn't surprise me, would removal of root and reinstall of the removed apps on this original ROM allow me to update?

probably but it might just easier to backup using titanium and then Odin back to stock if there are Odin packages for your device..

Not true. MyS3 was rooted when att pushed their last ota. And my captivate was rooted when they pushed the froyo update to it. But, that was on a stock Rom. Most custom roms remove the option to check for software updates.
MrHaley, thanks for weighing in, from your perspective do you think its necessary for me to reinstall the removed apps (they were backed up on Titanium) to enable my S3 to receive updates on its resident stock rom ?

You actual have two options:
1. Keep root, wait for devs to fix the issue, and then wait for the devs to improve the JB update for the S3(probably won't come will Q4-Q1(2013) anyway.
Or
2. Reinstall every stock app you deleted, froze, etc...Then you have to wait for the next OTA.
I'm hard pressed to actually recommend unrooting, since that practically goes against the whole purpose of being on XDA. IF they announce the JB update before the Devs fix the IMEI bug, then i would say unroot. However if they fix it by month's end then it would be worth the wait--I trust the devs here for than the ones making the updates. They tend to be significantly slower, no OC, Carrier-IQ, fewer patches, updates are less frequent than xda, and they come with Touchwiz.

[Q] Few questions dealing with Droid DNA

I'm not sure if all of these have been addressed or have a direct answer, but I just wanted to compile everything into
a concise post that I can refer to.
I SHOULD be getting my DNA in the mail today and it SHOULD be fresh out of the box and I am basing the questions off
of that.
Reason for rooting is mainly for the wifi tether app, since I have unlimited data and rather use that then pay for actual service.
1.) Since it should be fresh out of the box are the chances of it being unupdated likely? If so this means I can root it, correct?
2.) I'm pretty new in the rooting field, having only recently rooted my thunderbolt. How comparable will the process be to that?
I had to backdate the software or firmware to be able to do so and am hoping since this is new it wont require that.
3.) I haven't messed with roms too much and was looking at the ViperDNA rom, what would the perks of doing this be? Cons?
I may have future questions later, but this is all I can think of atm.
Thanks ahead of time!

I can almost guarantee you that the OTA will be installed on it and you will not be able to do anything with it until an exploit is found.
The root and S-off process is very easy if you are on the old firmware.
Crap, really? It's the same, power on + vol down process correct?
Even booting up the phone, this is talking if the OEM isn't updated, won't auto start the update, will it?

Boot it up without the sim in it. Let us know, as of last week I would have told you that it's probably not updated. But its been a few days since I've known anyone that got one new in the box.
If it's not updated and you would like me to help you pull and supercid and unlock just send me a pm. If you get offered the update you will want to defer it like 5 days I think is the most it allows.

Yea, I just got it an hour or so ago and booted right into the loader and asked in the IRC and I guess the OTA
was already accepted, so I'm sol for a bit.
Not even going to bother activating it, since I mainly use root for tethering.
I picked up the DNA in San Diego from BB for an upgrade on Verizon. It came with Software 1.15.605.4 710RD. I've s-off'd, root'd & TWRP'd with ease. Now I just need CM10.1 and I'll be happy.
I might fly to France and b-slap the CEO of the company who put the DCMA in.

App To Freeze OTA Update

Hey guys just wondering which app I can freeze in TiBu to stop the OTA. I received the OTA today and deferred but can only defer until Jan 31st, what app can I freeze to make sure it won't update and won't prompt me to update come the 31st. Thanks!

Lurk here a lot. Pretty much a noob at this stuff, but have managed to root and s-off both my original DInc and this Inc4g by reading and following directions. Remembering from the original DInc on how to stop the OTA, I did the same thing to this Inc4g, and haven't received any OTA notification (yet!).
Here is what I did(copied from a how to stop ota thread in original DInc forum)...
"To turn OFF future OTA updates, there is a file in the /system/etc/security folder. The file is named "otacerts.zip". Rename it "otacerts.zip.bak", or whatever you want. That will prevent future updates."
Hope this helps someone.
My brother & I both purchased our Inc4g's on same day. I rooted and s-off'd mine, he left his stock unrooted. His OTA came last week, I haven't seen one yet.

Btw, I used one of the alternate methods listed, did not try the first method listed, since it obviously for a different phone.
On stock, with root and s-on, I was able to freeze htc dm and htcdm with TiB. It was prompting me to update twice a day before I did it, regardless of how long I deferred. I haven't been prompted in three days with no adverse effects. Someone more knowledgeable than I will need to verify how safe it really is, but this worked for me.

There are two apps, htcdm and htc dm (with and without a space). They did not appear next to one another on my list, I had to scroll.
[edit] I also noticed that I froze htc dm command service, but the update prompt didn't disappear until I froze the two dm apps.
i have all 3 of those apps running viper... i'll try freezing them with TB... i've tried everything else.
I also checked to see about the 2 htcdm files mentioned above and realized in addition to renaming the otacerts.zip file I referenced earlier, is that I also did freeze the 2 htcdm files using TiB.
As of right now, I still have not received the update notification.
Stock, rooted, and s-off.

i'm afraid to post this - but a day and a half now the nag has not popped up since i've frozen the 3 files mentioned above. :knockonwood:
i've done all the other normal stuff that should work (i really don't understand why my build.prop changes are not working). i did get the viper illegal rom nag - but that only happens once a week so i can deal with it. getting the verizon nag each time i turned on the phone was getting old.

the venom guys have discontinued support for the viper rom for our phone. however, they have protection built-in to help stop devs from stealing their code... unfortunately it is now tagging us as running illegal roms and gives us a nag screen once a week. there's info about it in the viper rom thread.

INCOMING Update! 3/18 AT&T

Got a notification this morning about downloading a system update and out of habit, immediately turned the phone off even though I don't have plans to root(mainly because it's not available yet!).
Anyone know what's in the update or what it's adding/patching?
Looks like a pretty small update, 40.67MB. Says "Device Security Improvements" Baseband version went from APB5 to APC2
That probably means there is a root exploit even if nobodies found it yet huh
That's what I was thinking buradd. Still holding out hope. Lol

Green Battery Update BREAKS ROOT METHOD

I have found out that the new update will break the current root method.
There currently does not seem to be a way to downgrade if your devices is updated.
If you want to root, do not update.
This is aggravating because I only ever use root for ad blockers nowadays. Oh well.
Maybe with some luck the bootloader will be unlocked.

I use NetGuard to block adds. I purchased the IP filtering and it works awesome. Load in your favorite host table and let it go. It does keep an active VPN but haven't noticed any drain on it.
Here is the app thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/apps-games/app-netguard-root-firewall-t3233012/page332#post68312768 Developer is super awesome with replying to questions and helping.
Yup!

on a good note (no pun intended) the device almost doesnt even need root. you have Good Lock to adjust Notifications and colors, and a Theme Store as well. As OP said, blocking ads is about all one really needs root for on this device. Sure with xposed you can have a circle battery icon, and a few other neat tricks. But these can all be lived without. I am currently staring at my 2 replacement Note7's I just picked up a few minutes ago. Ive got Software Updates disabled, but cant pull the trigger to start the root process, lol.

Unfortunately, factor resestting won't affect the software, and you'll still be on the same update. I even tried flashing the original firmware files via Odin but that did not work either.
i concur, i bricked my Note 7 trying to root it after i got my replacement yesterday 9/21.
i got an internal usc email in regards to the phe update which states it will only let you postpone it 4 times before it will automatically install.
unfortunately the dbag in the store activated my phone on the wrong line and for some reason thought a firmware update would correct it smh so i didnteven have a chance to root since he already installed my screen protector as well.
