Has any one else found that the lights on the buttons only come on when it's really dark? When I'm in low light I can hardly see the buttons, I have to put my hand over the light sensor at the top to make them come on. It's as though the threshold to darkness needs to be lowered. Ideally the lights would be on all the time like my old Incredible S but I can't see that happening anytime soon.
I've spoken to HTC about this and of course their stock answer is that the lights work fine and it my be an issue with my phone but I have a couple of friends who own the original One X and they report the same issue. It's not a huge thing as I can usually hit the right button with out looking but it's pretty annoying - especially when showing it off to all my iPhone owning mates in a dimly lit pub...
Same here. Seems to need to be really dark before they come on. Anyone found any setting or app to sort this out?

Hy
It is normal .... And there are no setings for that.
The light goes on only if is realy dark or the Sun is shining on the Display.
And you can Prof if is something wrong with the lights by puting you Finger on the light Sensor ( other side from front cam )
If the light is Not going on then you have a problem.
Cheers

Thanks guys, so it seems that this problem is universal to the OX+ and not just my handset. Hopefully HTC will actually see that this is actually an issue and sort something out for the 4.2 build. A sensitivity slider would be nice or an option for always on - after all, how much power do them little lights use anyway?
Agreed that this is very disappointing. Obviously you can instinctively get it right after a while, but the whole point is that a smartphone of this standard should be as responsive as possible.

Maybe someone has posted this tip already, anyway here goes.
The light sensor for the home-menu-back-search buttons seems to only kick in mainly in the dark, and off on times in dim lit rooms.
If your phone does the same, put your thumb (i am right handed) over the little HTC logo in the top left of your screen, the sensor seems to be in that location, with the phone on the home screen (unlocked) see if the buttons light up when you do that, mine does.
So, you will get them to come on when needed
I'd love to find a way to do the exact opposite without strapping a flashlight to the top of my phone

Hello guys, now its been almost a week since i've had my s3 but yesterday night before going to sleep, i just unlocked my phone in pitch black darkness and what i saw was white light originating from the left capacitive key extending to the screen which looked really bad like a screen burn or some kind of weird white patch on the screen as if i've cracked it, and if it were from both keys i cud have convinced myself that its normal but its only the left key! and its not at all noticable even in a little light and if your screen is not using a dark black background.. so what do you guys suggest me to do? can you guys check your phones in a fully dark room with black blackground and touch keys lit up?? and will my warranty consider this an issue and cover it? i feel so bad right now :/
I'll check later tonight, but I generally have those lights permanently off since my S2 as the intermittent on/off at every screen touch is an annoyance particularly when watching videos
I would suggest turning them off, the buttons are easy enough to find in the dark plus you save a little bit of battery.

i dont have it and i also turn off those capacitive lights. either you have to live with or go far an exchange.
You sure?
Are you sure?
It can only be seen in a dark room and with a black background on the phone.
I dont like having flaws on my new stuff. I am gonna try to exchange it.

I went to the dealer and they said that they would send it to the shop to check if it really had a failure, and if it had a hardware failure they would exchange it in one week!!!!!!!!!!! i will just stay with my phone as it is. It is more possible they will really screw it on the shop with something really bad to worry about, and I bet that the next one will have the same flaw or another even worst, so I prefer to stay with mine.
After my bootload unlock and root, my softkeys don't work, help!
working fine here not sure what would have caused that
I just realized its an auto lighting issue, cover your light and proximity sensor and they come on. Voila!
I find something new/different every couple hours it seems like.
My soft keys don't light up either but I've been looking around and it appears in all the reviews I've seen, they don't lite up. Can someone confirm or deny this please?

Mine do light up. It needs to be dark or you need to cover up the sensor.
turn off your lights or go in a dark room. They DO light up and if yours don't, you have an issue.

Mine have been intermittent. Sometimes they light up and most of the time they don't. I love it when they work, it really helps. I keep missing the right spot for the back button unless I can see it. Mine would turn on when I rotated the phone to landscape and then go off again when rotated back to portrait. For the last hour they've been on all the time.
I just tried the light sensor theory and it's 100% right. I shined a bright flashlight at the ambient light sensor and the buttons turned off. Took the flashlight away and the buttons turned back on.
edit: crap, I spoke too soon. They turned off again and now won't turn on no matter what I do. They came on for a few seconds and then went off again. Now they're still off. I look forward to seeing them again soon, just wish I knew what makes them stay lit up.

I feel stupid. After using the phone while in the darkness of my bedroom the soft key lights came on just fine. Problem solved. They don't turn on during the day. What a smart phone!

My keys don't turn on unless I'm in a totally dark room, with no lights on anywhere. Frankly I think it's pretty stupid. I can't see the keys at all for about 90% of the time I'm using it. It would be nice to have a switch to just turn them on and leave them on. Maybe a widget but would probably require root.
This whole thread seems weird to me cause my keys don't shut off

If this phone weren't so awesome in every other way the (un)lighted buttons would be a deal breaker for me. It's pissing me off although I know eventually I'll get used to where the keys are supposed to be. The few times when the keys light up makes me pissed off for all the times when they don't.
If your keys stay lit all the time there must be a setting somewhere to turn them on. ??
Maybe a poll would be appropriate - see if this is a big problem or if I have a defective phone.
Am I the only one who soft keys are always lit up?
By the way I like them to be lit up all the time.

Do you mean even when the screen is off?
Mine worked.. then stopped.. took 3 factory resets to get them going. But now have to be in a really dark room for them to work..
Not pleased but this phone rocks. Hopefully HTC fixes this. Just chock it up as early adopter pains..
P.S glad I'm not the only one this bug is affecting..

you can Restore to factory status, and try this again.:silly:
def. seems like the sensor to initialize the backlight for the buttons is very sensitive. Wish it would pop on in low light not complete darkness.
Bump. For anyone interested making their capacitive buttons turn on with the screen, regardless of lighting.

Ah. I assumed anyone here would be rooted. You can stay stock, and it's easy to do.

EDIT: For anyone else interested, the developer of the app has just added official support for our devices. He has a thread in the international One forums.

Any idea what you did to get them to start working again? Mine won't light up at all with the exception they will "glow faintly" in a totally dark room.
Do you have power saver on? If so I think it affects them
No, it's off. I've now heard they don't light at all unless it is very dark. Very different from my HTC One X where the buttons are lit even in daylight.

I hope a future update allows these buttons to light up in less than pitch black conditions because I do have a difficult time seeing them when at my desk.

Mine stopped working for about 20 minutes one day and I just rebooted which worked for me
I think that the buttons are semi auto bright bc I've noticed at times when it's brighter they are dimmer and only fully lit when there's no lights

I also have an HTC One X and One X + and the buttons glow very bright. On the One, they will glow in a nearly dark room, but are still very faint and nothing like other models. I guess it was a design flaw that somehow made it to production. They say the new update fixes the touch problem with the buttons, but nothing about the illumination. I guess we'll just have to wait and see if HTC can and will fix the issue.
I'd be satisfied if there was a toggle to just turn the button lights on or off. There's an app for this in the play store called Soft Buttons Light but it doesn't work on the One.
Is anyone else having issues with the capacitive touch buttons not lighting up? I am not in power saver mode and my buttons only light up every once in awhile. Seemingly random.

Mine lights up when the LCD turns on and also on low light environment. This seems to be the normal behavior from what I read.
That's what I assumed usual behavior would be, and mine sometimes acts just like that. But most of the time they don't turn on at all. I'll be rooting and flashing soon and hopefully that'll fix it
Does anyone have any ideas in the meantime or maybe I'm missing a setting?

They are supposed to light up? Wow, I don't think I've had that happen at all. Is there a way to keep them on? I was thinking to myself it was annoying not being able to see them clearly.

This is a bug and has been fixed in newer software in the Main HTC One forum. T-Mo just needs to update the software.
From what I've seen on my device, mine only light up in "low light". Discovered it by tilting the phone towards a direct light, the buttons dimmed, then tilted away and they came back on. I just assumed that was normal behavior. Picked mine up on the 24th and no software update yet

Hmm you're totally right. I just covered my light sensor with my hand and they are constantly on. I wish there was a way to turn that feature off and just have them on all the time or at least change the sensitivity cause sometimes I can't see the buttons still. Well at least I have a reason now. Thanks.
