Hello Guys,
I am pretty much new to Android here (Used to be a Windows Mobile user), although I am starting to read and learn more about it. I felt so happy to be out of the Microsoft Mobile spell, it was horrible and the software just lives in the world of its own, it lags at almost anything and in short, it just cant work.
Alright, so I got my Hero 2 weeks back and I wanted to know a few things, which I hope you can help me with it.
- I have about 60 over applications on my SD card, and I wish to use the MoDaCo ROM, How am I able to backup the applications from the current stock rom and transfer them to SD Card or somewhere else?
( Will Market still recognise the apps I downloaded after I flashed my phone to MoDaCo? )
- One more question, everything when the MoDaCo rom releases a new version, lets say from 2.9 to 3.0, must I reflash and build everything from scratch again?
Thanks A Lot,
Jeremy

hi,
well to answer your questions,
you can install all your applications directly on your sd card using app2sd.(it is incorporated in the modaco roms but bear in mind you have to correctly format ur sd card in ext3 partition for app2sd application to work . Once you've done that , you can flash anything and you'll not have any problem.
2)concerning paid applications, yes. market will automatically recognise applications you bought once you sign in your google account(they'll be recognised but you'll have to download it manually) but paid ones, nope.
3)when you upgrade from the same built( meaning from 2.8 to 3.0 modaco for example) , you dont have to wipe before flashing cause both roms use as base the official 2.73 rom. thus you wont lose any of your settings. However, when you upgrade from a modaco rom to community rom 1.6 , you should normally wipe.(builts are not the same here, one being cupcake and the other eclair)

Thanks A lot for your response, and I have some questions again.
- Where could I find an app to format my SDCard to Ext3? Will my Windows PC still be able to read EXT3?
- You mentioned that market will recognise my downloaded applications after I root the phone right? So, I dont really get it - I have to download it manually? Meaning? ( All my apps are free, no paid )
- Its pleasing to hear that I don't have to wipe when I upgrade to 3.0.
- Oh and something which I missed out, I am supposed to flash a Radio at the same time right? Which one is the best to date? I heard that there was many versions. ( I'm using a GSM Hero)
Sorry for the inconvinience.
Cheers,
Jeremy
Hello, I'm a new member here. Been reading for the past few days on this forum and I have a few questions.
First of all I have my phone for a month now and I got fed up with the little internal space, so about 4 days ago I decided to Root my phone with the "upd_1.zip" file. After that I flashed the CWM4 on it and whiped my battery data.
I meanwhile bought titanium backup also and moved few not so essential apps to the sd card via titanium backup (im not sure if this creates the needed partition on the SD card or not though? do i need to do it proprerly or is it good as is?)
To get to the point:
My main problem is that the phone since it got rooted started to "forget" it's settings... mainly what bugs me is the Contacts get unlinked every time i reboot the phone, accounts get unlinked, my adw launcher forgets it's theme (this also happens without reboot), my yahoo email doesn't notify me properly, and apps in general don't seem to work properly anymore... (i also thought it might be from the app move to sd card, but i left the launcher for example on the phone, also haven't touched the contacts app...so i don't know)
How can I fix this? Will a new ROM help me fix these problems?
If yes, can you recommend me any good roms? I was looking a lot at cyanogen mod and ice cream sunday, but i cannot decide which one to get because i'm not sure which one is the most stable one of them?
What matters most for me in a rom is probably to be stable without too many bugs, to run flash if possible and to be more responsive than my current stock 2.3.3 rom. I don't really use the stock apps/gps stuff either, except maybe the youtube app, camera and the market app
My other request is please someone write down how to install a damn rom for noobs without any abreviations because the developers' install description is really vague and abstract in many cases (for the Cyanogen mod or ICSunday please)
My phone runs:
S5840XWKP6
kernel
2.6.35.7-perf-CL313173
[email protected]#1
GB.XWKPJ
Thanks, Joker
Hello Mate
Whatever custom ROM you flash to will have a bug or two but they aren't anything serious thats just the thing with custom Rom's.
Installing Rom's is very easy as long as your phone is rooted (as you have already done) and you have CWM (clockwork mod recovery tool 5.xx not 4.xx) as you have said. There is a problem with CWM 4.xx with the Galaxy Ace it tends not to work properly.
All Rom's are downloaded from links on this website, copied to your SD card as a zip file (which it's downloaded as) then applied by using the CWM tool which appears in your apps after you have installed it.
There are lots of step by step instructions of how to do this just google "how to root galaxy ace" or "how to install CWM 5" or "how to install custom ROM" do you get my drift?
I'm using custom Ice cream sunday CM7.2 from the development section of this forum. It's fast got only what you need in a Rom and has hardly any bugs.
Do some reading my friend i've flashed my phone about 50 in the 2 months i've had it just testing ROM's but i like the one i have now.
Cool, thanks for the reply mate, do u have any idea about the problem i'm having lately by losing my settings?
I was asking for the how to flash guide because of statements like these:
"then install zip
after install, go through set up then set oc if you use and any other settings then reboot."
which makes no sense to me, go through what set up and what's an OC... and what other settings?.... get my drift?
And i'm currently downloading "theMyth" rom to test out... hope it turns out, it'll be my first custom rom
If your using clock work mod 4, it's not saving anything because it doesn't work with the galaxy ace i only found out after it messed up my phone and of course the back up of my settings didn't work!
OC means over clocked cpu application, yes you can over clock the cpu just the same as a pc or laptop make it run faster etc but it's not advised unless you know what your doing or you could fry it.
You definately need CWM 5 installed before you go flashing any new roms. Also have a good read of the reviews for a ROM before you try it etc that gives you all the info you need to know if you will get on with it or not.
uhm yeah... just flashed themyth on my phone and redownloaded titanium backup and it doesn't show up on my apps list, wtf
Make sure your installing apps to your phone and not your SD card??
Also check CWM has changed to version 5xx etc.
still if i would be installing to my sd card shouldn't it show up on my app draws or whatever it's called? on market i don't have "open" option only "uninstall"
Ahh yes i had this problem. Some custom roms need google apps (gapps) installed for your phone to receive stuff from the market.
Do you see the Andriod Market App? Can you sign in?
this is what i was telling you earlier depending on whos Rom you are installing depends what things they've taken out or left in. If it's taken out you have to download some or the apps again to get other things to work.
yup... i redownloaded it from the market, but "open" wouldn't show up, luckily i had the app on my dropbox too and i managed to start the restore apps on it now, im curious what happens when restore will finish
it worked afterall, im happy atm
cool mate you will learn alot by trying different roms but the basic process for flashing is always the same.
Hi guys!
I've been reading your comments on this thread and now i have a lot of questions!:
1) I have installed 4.0.0.9 but according to cooltt it's better CWM 5.x.x, how i can install it now?
2) I thought like jokerman170 to install TheMythICS but now i seeing that he has had problems, how you solved it? Which version you downloaded?
thanks in advanced!!
u can flash it just like the 4, i don't really like this rom, looks like a stupid theme and i got 256 rating on quadrant :| wtf
i downlaoded the TheMyth beta 2 full
icsunday2 here i come
icsunday2 it's difficult to install for a newbie like me and some people have had problems with this rom.
Why TheMyth is bad?
sorry for my english
it wasn't too fast and was kinda buggy and low quality imo, ICSunday is cool, but can't really log onto my wi-fi yet, working on it now
EDIT: worked with second try, really impressed with ICS2 atm
Okay mate
Ok guys thing is installing icsunday is not tough but u didn't understand what to do.mmmmm use cwm 5 for icsunday and icsunday2 is best rom ever.
sent from my phone
plzzzz hit thanks if I helped you in any means .......
i did use the 5, cause the Myth rom upgrades it for you
Btw could you check out my other thread that i just started.... im kind of a retard...
So, I've switched to Paranoidandroid from CheckROM, which means that I've done rerooting and installing of ICS via ODIN. Afterwards, I've installed Paranoidandroid ROM v0.6 and HYBRID Gapps and done the rest of the instructions.
I don't know if I've done something wrong in the process (or I'm just a noob), but after few minutes of working and figuring things out, the screen just goes off and animations comes up (I think it's looping) that is similar to boot animation (but it's not bootloop since I was already at the homescreen).
So is there any way to disable/fix that?
I also have problems with connecting to WiFi (gets stuck at Obtaining IP Address) and my wallpaper also went missing and I couldn't set a new one.
Oh yea, I also couldn't find External SD files in Gallery? I seen it's in some folder emmt or something like that, but why it isn't placed in it's default /mnt/sdcard/ext_sdcard/?
Thank you!
P.S.
Oh yeah, sorry for an inappropriate use of grammar, hope you will understand what I meant to say
EDIT:
I also cannot reboot or power off my mobile phone, only if I take out the battery -.-
Full wipe and re flash fails then re download the firmware and re falsh .
jje
I've already tried wipe data/factory reset and reinstall Parandroid ROM + HYBRID Gapps. Or you meant that I should flash ICS Stock again and then flash Parandroid?
EDIT:
I'm flashing Firmware atm (Nordic Countries one). So I should add CF Root afterwards and then reflash Parandroid and it's stuff?
Tried it, I still get that animation loop after few minutes of usage =/!
(Had to post here since I can't post it at Development)
Did you try redownloading the rom, if not then redownload paranoid rom and then reflash it.
Re download, do the corresponding wipes, re flash, fix permissions just in case.,.
Should work
Thank you on your responses, I will try it asap and provide further info about it.
EDIT:
Redownload and reflash didn't work out =/!
this called hot reboot, I guess you need to format your internal sd card, use odin to flash the stock firmware, then flash the rom you like. And by the way, your external sd card is located in emmc, you can use an app called directory bind to bind emmc as external sd card, search the forum , you can find the instruction to use the app.

hello.
It's a known issue . Response from the original thread:
set phone and contact apps to 240 (custom DPI) or more simply to "Phone DPI".
It solves the problem.
cheers.
For starters. I am a Nook noob and I am not affraid to admit it.
I have read, read, read, and then read some more about rooting, roms, CWM, CM, and so on and I did puzzle most of the pieces together, but not all.
If I got it right there basically are 3 different roms one can choose for the NT:
Stock rom (the original state)
Stock rom Rooted
Alternate roms: CM (7,8,9), MIUI or any other variation of Android firmware distribution
The usage distribution of the roms can be found in a poll here.
Stock (original) limits you in using full potential of the NT, which typically means that you can not use Google Drive, install/use any apps other then the ones Nook market provides. You can not put apps on the home screen, use any widgets and you are very limited in what you can alterate on the system.
Stock Rooted is the state in which that you are still using the original firmware, however you now have root acces. This means that you have acces to Google Drive and are able to install/use most of the apps on Google Drive on your NT. You can use various launchers to access these apps and can set a launcher as default instead of the original launcher.
The easiest way to get here is by rooting your NT through an SD card. You only need the SD card for the rooting process. The (rooted) firmware remains on the internal memory of the NT.
In this, you:
Still have acces to all the original Nook apps and features (you are still using the original Nook system)
You have the possibility to UNroot the device and turn it fully back to it's original state
What I am not sure about is:
Can you use / place apps on the home screen?
Can you use / place widgets on the home screen?
Are there any other important differences between Stock (original) and Stock Rooted?
When going for an alternate rom, you have a diversity of choices, but all are fully seperate roms, that either replaces the original firmware or complements it (dual boot). What you get in return is a fully functional, tweakable Android system, on which the version depends on the rom that you choose. You can access Google Drive, install/use most apps, place widgets, use different launchers, etc.
The easiest way to get here is by using a SD card. I can not find the specific topic that explains the procedure though. It seems that you can choose to maintain the original firmware and place the rom on the (external) SD, which leaves you with a dual boot system, or you can replace the stock rom with the custom rom.
In this, you:
Loose usage of all of the NT's orininal apps and features (when using the custom rom)
What I am not sure about is:
Where in the process you can choose to either place the custom rom on the (external) SD or install in the internal memory.
Are there any other important differences between Stock Rooted and custom rom?
My main question is: Can you confirm my findings and help me answer the questions/uncertainties?
I can imagine this thread would be of help to others who spent a lot of time reading, but are left with some basic questions. That is why I took my time writing it.
When you use the sd card method, I use a cm7 card when I boot the tablet with the card it boots up as a regular android tablet. It's does not install anything permanently to the tablet. I get full google play. Like I said no nook software at all just android tablet. I use the nook app if I want to read. It has the cool page turn animation the nook software does not go figure. Take out root sd card turn off and turn it back on with no sd card or an unpacked sd card, it boots up just like it came out of the box. All app installs music anything put on the nook with the hacked card in it goes on the card. You have no access to the nooks memory except ram which gets cleared as soon as u restart it. As long as the hacked sd card is not in it there's no way for anyone to tell you've done anything to it, cuz u haven't it all stays on the sd card. Performance is great I play 3D games like mad trigger with no lag, it's the best of both worlds & only way to go if u ask me. I don't know why anyone would do anything els. It's just to easy. Hope that helped.

Thread moved. While I appreciate the effort you've put into this post by reading up and finding out about all the different ROM's, you need to also look to make sure you post in the correct sections of the forum and this is also stated in the sticky in the General section, not to post questions in General. If your thread is a question/multiple questions and you even tick the "Is this a question box" when creating the thread then you must post it in the relevant Q&A section.
Thanks

Thanks, that helps indeed. So basically you only use the CM7 rom, and neglect the stocked software. Sounds like an attractive approach. Thouh it is a bit of a shame that the 8 or 16 GB of internal storage are not usable then.
@AvRS: I did read the section about no questions in the General Forum's policy. I actually thought I posted in the Q&A but appearantly I didn't. I probably started the thread just before I read that part. Thanks for moving it to the proper section.

For the first point: Not on firmware 1.4.3, but on lower firmwares you can download an app called Nook Color App Manager (you have to side-load it as it is not in the Play store) that will allow you to do just that.
For the second point: You cannot place widgets on the Stock launcher. You have to install an alternate launcher for widgets.
Also, I think you mean Google Play, not Google Drive.

Unless you re-partition your Nook, you never have access to the full 8/16GB. You only have access to the 1GB MyNook partition. You have to re-partition (or have a B&N store do it for you) to get more space for user apps.
Ok guys, thanks for all the answers. A lot more is clear now, but definately not all. Also, yes I mean Google Play / Not Drive (doh, my bad)
As I read more and more, it becomes clear to me that all the information about rooting the Nook is soooooo spread and unorganised. It is nearly impossible to make an informed choice without having to spent hours and hours of reading the forums.
Just now for example, after a total of 2-3 hours reading the forums, it came to my attention that there is a big difference between the 8GB and 16 GB NT and that some rooting procedures can brick the NT8.
Anyway, on with the questions:
It seems that the latest version CM10, is the one that currently has most of the attention and most of the development resources go to this. Is this version now steady? Also for N8GB? Are there still big issues, like: no microphone working, sudded reboots, crashes, etc?
I read that CM9 is no longer being develloped. Is this version steady now? Also for NT 8GB? With a working microphone, no sudden crashes, reboots, etc.? Or was it abandoned while unfinished?
How about CM7? Same questions as the above.
So basically, even afters hours of reading, I still have not figured out which version would be best to use for my 8GB NT, if I want full Android functionality, but with everything working steady (also microphone) and avoid any big issues.
Hope you guys can shine some (more) light on this.

Answers:
1) Most of the dev's I believe use NT 16 GB so NT 8GB is a bit of a risk.
2) True, CM9 is no longer being focused on, Jellybean is the center of attention. No it is not considered steady/daily driver material. You might as well flash a jelly bean rom if you are going to flash a newer rom on ur NT.
3) If you want a guarantee that a ROM will run on the NT 8GB, the CM7 ROM by celticwebsolutions internal version is your best bet. It should be guaranteed to work. All those features you mentioned should be working. VOIP does not work on any of the ROM's currently
Number 3 update
Just one update on part of the question, answer to 3); Magicjack app works on it.

Thanks a lot, that really answers most of my questions. To keep you guys on edge, just two more :
With the CM7 'celticwebsolutions rom' you mention 'internal'. I assume that you mean that this rom overwrites the stock rom. Is there an alternative 100% steady CM7 rom that can be loaded aside the stock rom (on external SD)?
Does the rooted version of the stock rom support VOIP, such as skype?
"Does the rooted version of the stock rom support VOIP, such as skype?" Nope, rooted not rooted on any version will not support direct Skype or Video conferencing app that I know of on NT. This may change once OTG is implemented in future development.

for your first question, there is an SD version but it has not been confirmed to work with NT 8GB
You can however make your own internal sd card version using the internal version provided here and instructions that are listed over a succulent's blog: www.iamafanof.wordpress.com
if you aren't all too tech savvy, I would advise against making your own bootable SD, but if want to experiment and learn a thing or two, go for it!

There are instructions on how to install/create your own SD Card version of any ROM, you just have to try it out.
Skype isn't supported at all. It will install (according to the Play Store online) on my JB (AOKP) NT16, but I don't think it will run. For one thing, there's no camera or camera support.

Why not use Magicjack for voip, it free unless you want to get the dongle for less than $30. With video conferencing app like skype, you can only text but what the point of that.
Had my phone for a few months now and at the moment its rooted and ive installed a few roms on it. At the moment ive using Omega Rom which i do like apart from a few issues. Camera always asks me to install SD card.... even though its in. Anyway, not bothered with that for now.
Got 2 options at the moment.
1 - Unroot and install stock Samsung Firmware. I want to do this as there are 2 apps that dont work with a rooted phone which id like to use. Samsung Video App and NowTV. Id like the samsung app to work as when i 1st purchased my phone i had free credit to spend on it and i purchased a few films on there which ive never got round to watching. As for NowTV and possibly SkyGo, i need my phone rooted for these to work,
2 - Stick with a rooted phone and custom firmware. Im keeping an eye out for the new JellyBam v6 which hopefully is released this weekend.
Ideally id like to have the Jellybam rom installed with my phone unrooted. Would this be possible??
SuperUser app -> remove root

hi guys, it's my first post so i hope i'm in the right place.. just flashed jellybam v6.7.0 onto my phone and it's amazing, so smooth and quick compared to stock android jellybean.. however, i've got a constant message in my notification bar that says "blank SD card" and it won't let me mount SD, it keeps forcing me to format but i don't want to lose all my data. i've tried the card in my computer and it's definitely not corrupted, and all the data is still there. has anyone got any ideas what the problem is or how i can fix it?
many thanks in advance,
cheers

you're not in the right place, this is someone else's post. you should have posted in the Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting under a new thread. if your sd card works in you PC, transfer all your stuff over and format it, then try it!
