Hi, happy Saturday everyone!
I am a new proud owner of the S3 and have a simple question...I have a sandisk 64gb micro sd card xc that I used on my battery hog Evo that has a ton of songs...what can I do to use this on my new baby s3? do I have to reformat it? transfer my songs to my external hard drive or, what is the proper procedure? Do I need to reformat the card itself? I appreciate all you experienced users advice,
Thank you:laugh:
What format is the card now? normally you simply place the card into the phone and it should work but if its the wrong format it may need to be reset by the phone or formatted to fat32 by a computer

It should still work, but on the s3, you want it in exfat anyways. You can do that via your computer or just format it in your s3, i believe

Don't format it in your phone before backing up your sd card first or you will lose everything.

Hi guys,
When I insert my 4 GB memory card into Galaxy, it doesn't read it. Does anyone have an idea what is the reason. The card was recently in Nokia N82 and everything was fine.
Does your computer read it?
Tried to format it with computer or SGS2? (FAT32)
I don't want to format it, cos don't want to loose data stored on card, but i'll try different one.

Then back it up on your PC, format the card and then put it all back on the SD card.

Hello all, just got a new 16gb sd card and wondering how I should set it up. I plan on using bootmanager so I don't know if I need to partition the card or do anything else. Thanks for any advice.

Umm, just incase you have software already on it, but I would pop it in your pc, quick format to fat32, put it in your phone and you should be good to go. Unless you wish to copy over your previous recovery, then do so then install the card in to the handset.

Is formatting to FAT32 the only option for a phone? I ask because there is a transfer limit on FAT32 (around 4gb) and none on NTFS. I discovered this while trying to transfer a 6gb movie to my 32gb card. Anyone know if I can reformat to NTFS and have no ill effects?
I think for most ROMs it needs to be fat32. I was looking into formatting it to ext4, but I have not tried it yet.

I'm pretty sure if you format it to NTFS, your phone won't recognize it.
I suppose you could try it -- it shouldn't hurt anything.
FAT32 is the correct format for it.

Hmm, I guess tonight I can try but I'm thinking you're probably right. That blows. What I was trying to do was take good quality movies and convert to 3D..Which makes for around a 6gb file..no good if I can't get it on the phone tho. Whole reason I got the 32gb card. Guess I'll have to get some more music, lol
You shold try the ntfs.

Hello,
Me and my co-workers have exactly the same Phone GT-i9100, we bought exactly the same Micro SDCard, to the same provider, and Im the only one that the phone is not recognizing the SDCard. This is what I get:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/52817124/SC20120124-143033.png
We switched SDCards and again I´m the only on that the phone does not recognize the SDCard, and then I tried with an used one (4GB) my partner was using before and it worked, so Its not like my phone does not recognize ANY SDCards!!! So I dont understand how come the NEW 32SDCard is not working ONLY FOR.
Any help would be appreciated!!! Thanks in advance,
Does it work on your pc ... if not your card is probably dud

May be trying this check list:
Mount SD card
Format SD cad>Mount SD Card
Format SD cad in the other phone or PC>Mount SD Card
Try Stability Test V2.3 in the other phone
Try SD Tools V2.4 in the other phone
Dust inside the SD socket?
Have you tried formatting in your phone?
Could be you got unlucky, and got a faulty card reader in your phone. But also possible the sd card just needs to be formatted.
What kind of sd card is it? And is it formatted already?

It won´t Mount to the Phone, when I hit "Mount" it would keep on saying Mounting but it doesn´t... When I connect the phone (with the SDCard in it) to the PC the SDCard is not shown. However, it does if its in my friend´s phone.....
Im thinking it could be that my phone is rooted, unlike my friend´s. So I think I could take it back to its original ROM and try, if it doesnt work then take it to warranty cuz the SDcards work just fine in my other friend phone (which is the same one as mine, bought it together, same day, same company).
Its a: SanDisk MicroSDHC 32GB

Yes it is formatted, did it twice in my friend´s phone. I dont think its an sd card problem, its more like a feature/option thing, which I dont get to see any solution but to flash back to stock rom the phone.

Right; I mentioned the card as a POSSIBILITY, but that another possibility is that the card READER in your phone is jacked up. Root should NOT have any affect in your phone's ability to read an sd card. I have root on my phone, and it reads my class 10 16gb sd card just fine. But it may be worth it to try flashing back to stock to see if that helps. Otherwise, your only option left after that is warranty.

The thing is that it can read a 4GB micro sd that my other friend was using before, thats why I think it has something to do with my phone not reading that specific type of SDCard for some reason. I think of going back to stock because Root is the only difference between mine and my friends phone/MicroSDCard.
I´ll let you guys know my results in case someone else finds the same problem.

Sounds like it is having difficulty reading SDHC (High Capacity) cards. I think standard SD cards can get up to 8GB, so I'm betting your 4GB card is a standard micro SD, and not an SDHC. SDHC was created for 16 and 32GB.

Ok discard software related problem:
1- Flash original ROM-Kernel and try,
2- Then discard hardware related problem(in the phone and the SD card side)
Phone side;apply an electronic spray cleaner in the socket an SD Card. Use an anti-static wrist strap
3- SD card side; use software tools i recommended before in several SD cards.
Just to let u guys know, it was a hardware problem. I had to get a new phone.
Thanks,
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
Excuse me for the dumb question, but i don't own a memory card reader and i'm trying to find a way to convert my class 10 32GB microsd to exfat.
In my previous phones i could just access the sdcard with msc and format/convert at will, but since SGSIII connects only via mtp/ptp i'm clueless
Any help would be much appreciated
From what ive read if you go into settings-storage there should be a format SD card option there. This is taken from the official manual online as I dont have the phone yet but I hope it helps. As far as I know the phone should format it into exfat but it might be card size dependant so not 100% sure

hi all,
I've been trying using my 64gb sandisk sd card for about 4days or so the problem i have come across in the CWM 6.0.1.2, it wont mount External sd card nor it would read that card whilst in recovery mode
Now i dont know whether its suppose to be like this or the CWM doesn't support or maybe there is something wrong with my Sd card?
I just need little help to fix this issue
Cheers
None had this problem?

How did you format the card? It is a known issue that ExFat Formatting on 64G cards will NOT work on the SGSIII and you have to format your card as Fat32.
Try and format the card on your computer as Fat32 and it should work.
It's because the 64gb sandisk is formatted by default as exFat, which is not supported by CWM
The only solution to this is to remformat the card, probably at fat32 as this is the most widely used but BACKUP ALL YOUR DATA FROM extSD FIRST!! as reformatting will wipe the card
Then CWM will recognise this as normal
Mind you fat32 does have its disadvantages, mainly that you won't be able t have a single file bigger then 4gb on it
eh more than 4gb? then whats point of having 64gb SDcard?
i didnt know that was issue with the s3 will there be exFat support in CWM? its really frustrating
Thanks for replies
It's not an issue with the S3 I believe, it's just CWM -no idea if it will be updated to support it though :S
The 4gb thing only means that any one file cannot be bigger then 4gb e.g. you couldn't have a movie file that is 4.5gb in size.
Really it's no problem to have it as fat32 unless you have seriously big files

It is unknown at this time if ExFat will be properly supported but I would assume that at some point it may be. Also, just in case you dont already know, The SGSIII is NOT capable of moving apps to the ExtSD card natively either so if that is one of the reasons you bought such a big card, I hate to "bring you down".
There are some methods to switch your internal and external SD cards to assist in this issue but you will have to search and read the threads to find out the methods.
Just so you know...
yeah i know that i just backup using appcontrol and then move them to exSD
thats quite helpful i didnt know all this else i'd have not given up my 32gb card its quite lame TBH!
cheers for the help least i wont keep formatting my sd card now lol
