Please help - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My cousin gave me his Thunderbolt.
I was able to operate the device fine. Then I did an OTA update. I wasn't able to complete the update cause I needed more battery. So I re booted and now I'm getting this screen.
When I re booted and hit menu it has an exclamation point symbol with an android on the screen in the back ground with Revolutinary CWM v4.0.1.4.
Now I'm stuck in this screen and can't get out.

If this phone is rooted why did you do an OTA? Turn the phone off and hold the power buton and power and volume down and see if you cant get in to recovery from the boot section. Most likely you might need to flash an RUU

I didn't know it was rooted or was attempted to be rooted. The OTA didn't go through I think because I was getting an error message saying I needed more battery.
I'll try that out.

I didn't know the phone had this but anyway I held power and volume down and now I have a white screen that has Revolutionary highlighted in pink.
Ok I chose Recovery and now I'm at a screen with Revolutionary CWM on the top.

In recovery can you select different things like install rom? Wipe? So on?

The only options I'm given when I scroll is under Fastboot is...
Recovery
Factory Reset
Simlock
Hboot USB
Image CRC

Then select recovery and let me know what all options you have. If you can load roms. I would do a wipe and then install a new rom and see if that fixes your issue.
While in fastboot does it say s-off or s-on. If it says s-off you are rooted.

Then do as suggested.
Download a rom .zip file and place it on your sd card.
Boot to Recovery and wipe everything using the wipe options.
Then choose to flash a .zip and select the rom .zip you downloaded and put on the sd card.

You can find roms in the Development section here at XDA, also at Rootzwiki, and my Rom is linked to my banner in my signature in every post.
There are quite a few options to choose from.
I suggest reading up on some of them and decide what may suit you best.
Assuming this is all very new to you, you may just want a rooted stock rom.
HERE is the XDA dev section.

Just to note I'm on Recovery screen and it has an exclamation point symbol in a triangle and android symbol in the background.

If you like sense rom sky raider is a great stable rom. It sounds like you are new to all this. Santod sense ICS is a good one to. Like said read up on the many different ROMs out there. Many are good ROMs.
Yeah WiFi tether is way better. Just ask how to set it up after you choose your rom. As the settings in that depends on you're rom. Main thing is your phone is fixable and not broken. Just don't do ota any more as its for stock unrooted phones.

[CWM] Bootstrap Recovery

We've tested and can confirm this bootstrap recovery is working. Thank you to bane449 for testing. The recovery is a straight APK pull from the Droid X2. Worked thanks to the similarities between devices.

CWM allows users to easily install unsigned update packages. This will open up the Photon to pseudo-ROMs, all sorts of modifications, and more.
Forgive my ignorance but what is a "pseudo-Rom"?

Psuedo meaning "not really" a ROM. A locked bootloader will prevent true custom ROMs, but P-ROMs will be possible.
P-ROMs are based off of stock files and modifications. They don't replace the kernel or modem.
Yup i installed this and rebooted into recovery mode. It worked just fine for me. What happens if Sprint releases an OTA update? Can i recover root access or downgrade with this? Sounds like I can't because I can't modify the kernel.

Make sure your device is plugged into the wall charger when you do Reboot Recovery. That's the only way it'll work since it's a bootstrap recovery.

Can you explain why this is? I'm a little confused as to what makes a "bootstrap recovery" different from a regularly flashed "recovery.img".

Caveats:
This is not a *real* recovery. The way this recovery works is by hijacking portions of your boot process during system initialization and starting into recovery instead. So, if you hose your system *COMPLETELY* you will need to SBF. Specifically, if your logwrapper, logwrapper.bin, or hijack binary are missing from /system/bin, you will be screwed.
This is from koush himself concerning droid x/2 bootstrap. I would seriously wait til an sbf surfaces before flashing any of these "psuedo-ROMS" or even just deleting any system apk's. Just my opinion.

This is CWM bootstrap. Original one was on the Droid X, created by Koushik Dutta. Then it was ported to the Defy. Then to the Atrix. Next, the Droid X2. Now, the Photon 4G.

Sbf is gonna be your friend when it comes to unrooting and restoring. It will pop up soon.

OTA Update January 20 2012 Question

All -
My beloved 3D is telling me there's a security update being pushed by Sprint. I am rooted but with an as yet untouched (stock) ROM. I obviously don't want to lose root - will allowing this update remove root (I've had that issue with past phones). I backed out of the update but the stupid notification won't go away so if it comes to pass that I should *not* allow the update, I need to figure out how to get rid of that blasted icon.
Thanks as always
If you are on hboot 1.50 just flash stock recovery and then take the update...you will not lose root...when done, flash back to wutever recovery you were using before and you're all done....
Sent from my PG86100 using xda premium
If you could see me now, you'd see eyes glossed over, deer in the headlights look. Yes, I'm on 1.50... To flash the stock recovery I'm guessing I just go into recovery, apply update from zip, and go, correct? Where can I find the stock recovery at? Then, when done, if I have a stock recovery I don't know how to put shooter xc back on... Cripes I'm chasin my tail...
Wut u need to do is download the 3 files i have attached here for u.Make sure to extract the 2 zip files.
1.Install flash image gui like any other apk and open.
2.Click on Recovery Image then browse to where ever the stock recovery is on your sd card and select it and then click flash.
3.You should now have stock recovery on ur evo so just proceed to install the update. If all goes good you should now be updated.
4.If you want to put cwm as your recovery again just open flash image gui and repeat step 2 but this time just browse to cwm on your sd card and flash that.
You should be all set know.

Luda305,
Is this proven and can you run a rom that isn't updated?
Thank you in advance!
Yes this is proven as I did this myself. Only works if your on the stock rom of your phone. If you mean can you flash a rom that is not updated after you do this the answer is yes. The radio will stay updated no matter what rom you flash since we are on hboot 1.50 and can't flash radios. Hope this answers your question.

Ok, quick question. Flashed stock recovery, but I cannot update via the HTC updater.
So I downloaded the update in zip format.
How do I install from the Zip?? with stock recovery on????

You can't. You need a custom recovery. Unless your s-off and you flash it threw the bootloader.

Also - as far as FlashImageGUI, I downloaded (and thus paid .99 for) my copy from the market. I'm a firm believer in rewarding those who put the work in.
I can't get the update to work I used flashimagegui; flashed to stock recovery; went to HTC software update, hit check now, downloaded, hit install now; it goes into bootloader-type loading screen; gets about 1/5 of the way then displays an android software with a red triangle/exclamation point.
I suspect that if I can find this update in the form of a zip, I could just apply the update from CWM but I have no idea how to get the update in that form... Any help is greatly appreciated

Did you validate that the stock recovery worked by holding volume down and power and booting into recovery? Did you fastboot oem lock? I havent seen much success with people using the flash image GUI but i've seen around the forums that if you go into the custom recovery, flash the stockl recovery zip, flash the stock rom zip then then fastboot oem lock, it works.

if you boot your device into recovery mode (power + volume up), does it say CWM recovery 5.x.x.x?
if it does, then you have a custom kernel.
if not, flash a custom kernel. use rj's kernel if you have a physical home button or entropy's kernel if you have a capacitative home button.

I just installed CWM Touch via Rom Manager, worked fine.
if you download a recovery.img file you can boot into fastboot "FASTBOOT USB" then do a "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img" and it will flash the recovery that you downloaded or use CWM or GOOmanager to have it auto install them
download goomanager go to settings and click install openrecovery script. This install TWRP which is much better and easier to use than CWM

Hey guys. I did the moonshine bit successfully, installed ROM Manager, and TWRP recovery. I have a couple of ROMs saved to my phone, and am ready to test drive one.
I follow the steps to get to fastboot, and select recovery, then power button to enter.
After a few seconds, I get the "triage" screen - black background, red triangle with BANG in it, over a phone graphic.
Now what?

You need to load the recovery image through fastboot. Check out the bottom of this doc:

You can use ROM manager for cwm and goo for twrp as long as you're rooted and unlocked, may or may not need s-off for recovery flashing, I don't think so.

So since you have done moonshine, can you confirm that it doesn't clear the data?

Well, the image files I had saved in my download folder remained. I have experimented with a few ROMs since then, so the other folders I noticed empty (DCIM, ringtones, etc) may be due to the new ROMs.

Also if you shift between 4.1 (sense) and 4.2 they are made in differing areas, so it may look blank in 4.2 because its in a different location and it has nothing in it yet, previous contents are in the old location /data/media.

Didn't say it was empty, while Nada means nothing I took it to mean you didn't see those folders in /data, which you wouldn't anyways. I'll stop helping now

Don't take what I wrote personally. I was asked if the moonshine process removed data, and I was reporting what I experienced.
Everyone's help is valuable here. Don't leave because someone - intentionally or otherwise - hurt your feelings.

Not leaving, just not helping, didn't hurt my feelings, just made it seem like you didn't want my help, and I can spend the posting time updating ROMs or something.
