Hi,
Im thinking of getting the xperia U but the lack of SD card slot is really putting me off. whats more gsmarena says that out of the 8GB available only 4 GB can be used.
Why?
whats in the remaining 4 GB, no ROM file is that big to take up 4GB. is there a way to unlock all memory for use? If that happens I would love it as I am more than content with 8GB of memory
Thank you
Its divided by
4GB = user available (for photo, music etc) as SDcard.
2GB = for application your installed as Internal memory
2GB = for android system

the size can be abit of a problem but if you use it wisely you'll be ok at thats how i see it
(tip! if you want more space when you do buy the phone make sure you format the sd of it to gain the whole 4gb as half of it is in use give or take)

So I noticed it says this phone has 16gb of memory, but when I look at the phone storage it says 9.75gb total and internal store 2gb. Is this another memory thing like the desire z / g2 having 4gb of memory but only 1.5gb user accessible?
Same here.
yep it is blocked off to OS and stuff
mine say the same. not sure how they keep getting away with this.
Theoretically it's 16... Then they partition for the OS and read only files. All storage devices are the same way.
They could have advertised 10 gb and be a little more realistic
S2 have a 16 gig internal memory, so why does mine say 3 gig used and 8 available? Where is the other 5 gig? I'm running a custom ROM (not had chance to update my sig yet) would that make a difference? I can't seen to find out what this 5 gig is........
Thanks

i dont have the exact number to the nearest MB but it works something likes this...
16GB on internal memory equates to 14.4 (approx) GB available memory...
you can see something similar in any windows/linux PC...when you try to see the disk space...available is alway less than total...dont worry/bother right now why its like that...
ok now from 14.4 GB available... you take out 2.1 GB (approx) for internal memory (also called partition for storing Apps)...
this leaves you with 12 GB (approx) free...called the SD card memory (separate from any external SD card you might put in)
its like that for each and every SGS2 16GB model user.... nothing to worry about..

ah right, so nothing to worry about... thanks for clearing that up mate.
I know, i can have external memory, but it is slow comparing to NAND internal memory
How much of internal memory will left after all the system? 11GB?
On my galaxy s 16gb (rough comparison) SD card partition is 13.4 and app partition is 1.8. Rest is system partitions.
Touchwiz will probably take a bit more and Samsung may partition differently.
Its enough for me end up with 4gb free
With 5gb music.

if i read it right the built in 16 gb will have 10.5 gb usable as internal sd which is 1 gb lesser than my sgs2. Thank god sgs3 has the sdcard slot .

Damn ill take a 16 gb and 16 ext. Also the ext battery but deff not both 64.
Where have you seen info about extended batteries?
I never use more than 3 gig on my phone so 16 gig is plenty. Out of the 3 gig that I use, most of it is ROMs and kernels that are on it
... ... ...
I'll be happy with the 16GB one, already have a 32GB card but i may get a 64GB card too.
Yes. Put a 62 GB SD card in it and there you have it you will never run out of storage. Plus you can utilize the Dropbox Storage they give u

To each their own.
I think I'll buy a 32 Gb phone and buy an sd later as and when required. (Since internal memory is faster)

i think ill grab a 16GB version of the GS3..already have class 4 32GB never used it had it on my note but i returned it due to pixel issues..still a virgin but now i might get the higher speed sandisk 64GB.. that way when i get new Nexus/NOTE2/GS4 ect.. ill just buy the ones that have the lowest GB built inn and just popped the 64GB.. im good with a built in 16GB..got to love this SD slots coming from a iphone/ipad user..still like my apple stuff but its time for a change
question ? whats faster internal memory or the new Sandisk card when the phone reads it..i mean the Sandisk reads 30mb sec* i mean that plenty fast already..will there be a big difference when the phone reads the internal memory or the SD high read cards.?
will my class 4 32GB work good enough on the GS3? will there be like a little lag due to its a calss 4? or thats good enough?

San disk 64gb is class 6

NAND memory, the integrated one, is the one used in SSD disks. It is faster than SD cards
Well, I just wanted to know what are the advantages and disadvantages of SWAPIT RAM EXPANDER. Cuz I am planning to buy it.
Some say it will wear out the SDcard. I'm in a dilemma to buy it or not.
Any suggestions ?

Question: Do you REALLY need more RAM? are you constantly running out of memory followwed by a "no free memory" error? If no: Then you don't need this app.
This kind of apps will wear out the SD-card pretty fast if you are a heavy memory user (Using lots of apps at the same time)
And the apps that gets "moved out of the way" will be a lot slower too. Sure, the currently running app might load a tiiiny tad bit faster, but thats it. Is it worth having all the other running apps slowed down to a glued-frozen-snail pace?
Check official link and opinion's
I don't think that you really need that, why don't you try to install ROM Toolbox, and set dedicated memory for some apps and decrease for others
Here Rom Toolbox Review
Suggestion!!!

well you can use that app if you have a class8 or class10 microSD card. the card will wear out only if you swap a bigger size into class2 and class4 microSD card. try swapper 2 in play store, it is good too and free. i have my sandisk 32 gb class10 microSD and i use swapper 2 to have more ram. my SD card runs well for about 1 year now. please press thanks button if i helped you. cheers..
I just have buy a brand new SanDisk Ultra Android 32GB SDSDQUA-032G-U46A of 32GB for my SE Neo V, it is ok if i use any Swap program to activate this function? How fast will perform the device when swap is on? My memory card is Class 10 UHS-1 30MB/s will wear out slowly if i will use a 4GB for swap? From what i know bigger swap file means less write cycles.

I use this program but I must tell You it doesn't make any big difference. I have sd card class 4, the program sais it uses up to 90mb of it's expanded RAM, but somehow I can't see a big difference in free memory. Maybe if You had some better class of the sd card, then You could use it, else don't even buy it.

hey guys, i know that xperia sola has 8gb internal memory but 5gb user available right?
so which memory card should i buy?
should i buy 16gb or 8gb would be enough?
i only gonna put like 50 songs, probably one 720p video which usually takes 700mb, some casual android games from the market, and some heavy gameloft games like mc3, nova and so on.
which should i buy considering it has 5gb internal memory available for user which makes it a total of 11gb if i 8gb+internal memory and a total of 19gb if 16gb+internal memory.
and which colour colour should i pick. white or red? i dont want black i have been using so many phones with black colour my whole life so white or red?
If u have to put so many things on the memory i suggest u to take a 16 gb class 10, a ext sd card make all very slow if it is not enogh good!
I prefer the red one,but when i bought it there is only white -.-
Since the price is almost the same for 8&16 (at least where I live) I'd get a 16. You won't have to worry about the space if you decide to put more files in it later on.
But make sure the class is high enough or it will make your device laggy. I'm not sure what class would be good enough for android as I always use the class 10 cards from my cameras, but I think 4 minimum.
Oh and I'd get red, it's an eye catcher.

First of all the user accessible memory is 4gb only.
Now to answer your question, it'd be better if you go for 16gb.
Reason - You said that you will play heavy games like mc3. Now when you install these games from the play store, they download a big chunk of data on your internal memory (usually 1gb+) now since the user accessible internal mem is just 4 gb, you'll only be able to keep 2-3 games at max.
But there is an app by the name "gl to sd". Using this app, you can transfer those "big chunks" of game data to your external memory. (requires root).
Now you can keep around 5-6 games along with those songs and 720p movies you mentioned.
I am using Xperia Sola with a class 4 16gb mem card. have about 5-6 big games(mc3, asphalt 7. dead space, gta3, max payne etc), around 300+ songs, and still have 3-4 gb free in my mem card. Moreover I keep my internal mem of 4gb as free as possible.

about moving apps from internal memory to sd. im not too worry about it. i recommend Link2sd. it is much much better than any apps out there that have the function to move apps to sd.
