Common mistakes during bootloader unlock? - HTC Droid DNA

To prevent bricked phones, can people who experienced errors during the unlock process tell what happened and how they fixed it? That would be much appreciated.

Unlocking virgin 4.5.141.

I'm an old hand at flashing Android phones, but just recently moved from my beloved HD2 to Atrix 4G. My phone came with 2.2 so there was no problem unlocking it etc. However, I'm playing with friend's 4G, she would like to try out ICS. The phone is on 4.5.141 OTA'd since new, rooted, locked bl and Sim unlocked.
Is there a safe way to unlock the BL on this phone? Most of the discussion on this forum deals with previously unlocked 4gs. Since this is not my handset, I thought I'd ask for a second opinion, in case my research led me down a garden path...
TIA

So which does she want? Blur or ICS? Per your other post which was done around the same time you screwed up Blur launcher for her and want to know how to fix it. I'm figuring you should leave her phone alone!

+1 hahaha.
A lot of what she wants from blur is already integrated into ICS. what she asked me for was ICS with blur.... There is also her desire to show up the other post doc in the lab who is being a Samsung boot boy - hence me messing with her phone. If she only didn't upgrade it would be easy.
Now that you know wayyyy too much info, can anyone answer the original question?

My replacement Atrix came from Moto the same way, 4.5.141 and locked down. I've rooted it, but cant find any directions for unlocking it that didn't start with it being unlocked before this update. I've searched the forums without much luck. A point in the right direction would be awesome!
Kamikaze style?
Well, Nottach did it:

He did it by hard bricking his phone though. So I wouldn't recommend it. But if you try, please, let us know

Unlocking Bootloader

I know many of you guys have years of experience in programming and such. I am in no way trying to say that i know anything cause i don't. Would it be possible to design a device similar to the XTC Clip for the HTC phones which uses the sim card slot and a gold card to unlock the simlock and bootloader on HTC phones. Has anyone tried to make something like this??? Does anyone even know how that thing works?
imo the only way to unlock the bootloader if there was a system engineer leak (aka pudding for atrix, photon etc) for the RAZR. But I dont know if people are searching for it? because u need to have the cheesecake app and check from time to time

[Q] CASUAL 417b reliability/stability

I have a Verizon GN2 that is brand new out of a sealed box running VRALL4. I attempted rooting with CASUAL 417b and it crashed at "protocol initalisation failed" (see details in my other post, sorry can't post links yet). I have rooted a few Droid Xs so not a total noob, but I am a little reluctant now to continue messing with this nice phone. With every attempt the risk/reward goes down for me, especially since my Droid X was on it's last leg
Anyway, question is, what is your opinion on CASUAL 417b and it's stability/reliability? If I used it on 100 phones, how many would be bricked, soft or otherwise?
0 bricks.
Wow zero? Seems a bit optimistic lol...seriously though remember it has already crashed on me, and although not a brick, that makes it zero for 1
Your problem is your usb cable. Switch cables and it will run just fine....
Btw the software didnt crash it lost the connection to your phone. Oh and your phone wasnt bricked.
You might want to go back over to the casual thread and read a few post down... it addresses troubleshooting...

I've used it on several phones and have talked with many others that have done their phone and we had Zero issues.
Your issue is probably because you tried to load a recovery without unlocking first. You can't blame that on the software....

[Q] Droid DNA Root Help

Ever since OTA update came out, it has been impossible to unlock the bootloader without JTAGing the device, but i was wondering if it would be possible to SBF my DNA back to Jellybean or any 1.XXXX update like it came with out of the factory when i bought it stock so I can unlock the bootloader. I have found similar posts about SBF, but none that relate to the DNA. Please help, I really want this phone rooted, but i don't want to JTAG my phone if i don't have to.
Can't downgrade while s on. This has been suggested many times please use the search feature to keep the forms less cluttered

[Q] What is Bump and how does it function?

So what is Bump? I understand its a "bootloader workaround", but i just dont see how it works? If you were to boot into the bootloader, would it say ***UNLOCKED*** or ***LOCKED***? I really don't get it, how do you simply bypass it? lol, is it worse than a full unlock? If so, then how? Someone explain this to me, I cannot find anything on Google and the lack of information is driving me insane considering I'm going to be doing this tomorrow and usually know exactly what I'm getting into.
To rant on a bit more....I really just don't understand it, I'm big on my personal thought of how my phone is so the potential of it being "LOCKED" still really disturbs me for unknown reasons. But I realize that isn't really the important thing, still just wanna know what it is. I also don't understand how you can do things and still have a locked bootloader to begin with, so if someone could explain that to me (in the case its still locked), that would be fantabatastical!

Since LG and Verizon both lock their bootloaders there is no "Official" way to unlock the bootloader. You can't even boot to bootloader. There is just no such thing. Bump is a work around to get TWRP installed without unlocking the bootloader.

I found the thread for the devs and now I understand it, basically allows you to sign images that the BL will allow, so its pretty much just as good as a BL unlock. Neat!
