lag in dialer and contacts app, a different kind - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have seen a lot of posts that says lag in dialer app - takes 4-5 seconds to load etc
In my s3 I have the same problem, but in addition to that when I try to access call logs of particular person from logs tab by touching records, it does not open when I turn off the phone, take the battery out for 4-5 seconds then I am able to access it, after a day or two the same problem shows up.
what to do? any permanent solution?
I am on rooted stock 4.0.4 ics
EDIT :
Sometimes even the call history doesn't gets saved.
please help guys sometimes i get important calls and i can't even see from which number did i got the missed call.
P.S. this only happens once in a while. But It is very frustrating, i cant even see the people who called me, miss calls or whom i call.

ExDialer is your friend. Install it after the first run its always pretty smooth and lag free.

been using exdialer for some time now and it is a fantastic app... thanks all

I use Swipe Dialer from play store,
Its just like stock asop nice and fast...

Thread moved to Q & A section, post in the relevant section next time.

I think the only solution is to MOD contacts app so that it can be kept in memory permanently so it can load faster.
I dont know about programming, is it possible to port AOSP contact in Samsung S3 with JB ROM?

Exdialer is the best replacement.

Stock messenger issue

Since updating to 2.1 I've had a few issues with the stock messenger.....a few times I've had send failed messages, then the recipient got the same text several times (lol) and lately I haven't been getting any notification of new texts until I actually open the messenger.
Is there something I can do to resolve this???
btw, I've looked for the stock 2.1 messenger apk around here, but I can't find it....can someone please provide me with a link

Are you AT&T? If so, I had the same problem, especially with long text and MMS sending pics. I believe it was a problem within the APN. I don't know exactly how, but now I have 2 APN'S and the problem seems to be solved. I have MEdia Net and MEdia Net MMS, which is the AT&T brand name for their browser/network. I have tested the every APN setting posted in the forums, and they are the only ones that deliver large pics and 4page texts consistantly. If you need the settings, post here.

yeah, I am using AT&T....that is actually part of my issue, and the other part is that the notification doesn't show up sometimes until I actually open the messenger.
I've downloaded handcent, and re-installed conversations.apk (the 2.1 messenger) just in case, and so far so good, but I haven't tried a really long text or large pic yet...I'll do that and see what happens

We have discussed the task killer apps extensively here. And the consensus seems to be that they actually cause more harm than good.

Agreed if you just installed and use default settings, but if you take the time to hand set it up, it is a really useful app. Especially kill when screen off saves battery and data. I find I still have 30% battery on day 2 without charging. Without it my battery last 1 day max. If task killer effects an app/phone performance, then set it to ignore. No reason not to use it at all. Without it most apps with permissions would run continuously.

I probably use my phone a lot more than the average person. I run my own business with my phone when I am out of the office, not to mention my new addiction to the xda app.
I check my ATK frequently because every day is a balancing act of battery vs usage. After using my browser for 30 minutes, I can't believe how many of my installed apps are running for no reason...the list is 2 screens long sometimes.
Without ATK I wouldn't have any way to free up my system?? Are you saying apps running in background or when screen off is better than using ATK?? Hard for me to believe, but you haven't mislead me yet, Batman. I'll give it a try and report back.

Even if you see a long list of apps, sometimes it is not the whole app that is running but only part of it for a while to do a certain task. Android then terminates them when they are idle for a period of time. I also have my brightness set on the lowest setting and only switch on WiFi/3G when I use them. You can download toggle widgets (e.g. APNdroid) from the market to make it easier to toggle these settings.
Also, if you have weak 3G coverage in your area, then that also drains the battery as the phone is constantly searching for the 3G network. Therefore, sometimes I switch my network mode to only 2G (or GSM only) networks rather than GSM/WCDMA preferred.
In conclusion, there are many factors that contribute to how fast your battery is drained, and apps running in the background is certainly one of them but, definitely not the only reason.
Let us know how it goes

Back in topic.. did you resolve your messaging problems? If so, what was your solution? I'm interested in hearing if you tried pics or long messages yet too?
Sent from my X10a using XDA App
My solution is handcent It's much better for me than the stock app. The stock app is working, though. I tried mms & sms....both are fine. I found the custom vibrate feature in handcent and now I can actually feel it vibrate when I get a text because it stays on for a full second!!!
Did you uninstall stock app? I'm still trying to figure out why I seem to be the only one who has 2 APNs? It reverts back even if I change it, but it works.

Standard SMS app lags and locks up...often

So tell me if anyone else is having this problem. When I hit Back to close a conversation (to go back to the conversation list), the app will hang for quite a long time. Sometimes upwards of 20 or 30 seconds. It's my biggest gripe with the phone as I send plenty of text messages every day.
Anyone else having this problem? Because it's *very* annoying. I installed Handcent, but I couldn't stand it. It wasn't smooth at all (scrolling) and it was ugly (and the skins didn't help much).
Same issue for me. I put handcent on and it works fine for me. Kind of sucks.

I don't delete threads or posts to conserve space. When I got this phone (week and change ago) I had just over 10k messages, and it's probably around 10,200 now. That's across 87 conversations, but I'd say many of them are less than 30 messages a piece. Only about 20-25 are big ones. I'd guess 5 of them are well over 1,000 messages.
the 4th thing I did after I rooted was....
DELETE THE MMS.APK (since 2nd thing was to put on CM7.1) from system/data and put on Go SMS as my default.
I don't have any issue. I let my phone delete after 200. I use SMS backup + to back them up to my gmail accont. That way I can get them if I want them later, but they don't take space on my phone.

2 questions!any alternative to NoLeD app?

i am rooted using miui latest version
it seems NoLeD does not work, my favorite app
i need an alternative or clarification if it will be supported in future miui builds (cant post in dev thread yet XD )
another question relating to miui
every since i used miui my gps navigation does not lock on, ive tried clearing cache, and using gps status toolbar but nothing seems to work
thanks!! also if there is no alternative to NoLeD does any one here have something they do to show they have texts they havent read? its a great feature but its not 100% mandatory that i have it
..maybe something that vibrates my phone every 30 seconds until i turn it off?
You are probably better off asking in the MIUI forums unless you are using the version of MIUI still available in the dev forum. There is no support available for Galnet MIUI on xda.

I'm liking 'easy reminder' almost as much as I liked bln. I set it to a quieter ringtone to go off every 15min if there's an unread message or a missed call I haven't checked.
Has made my paranoia of checking my phone every few minutes from having a 'phantom vibrate' and wondering if I just missed a call or message.

thanks, ok i will check out those 2 apps
i like the default sms though how it wakes the screen
does rooting or using my rom increase my signal? i dont know what i did but when im at home i always had horrid signal, so bad i could not even check facebook or browse google
but right now i can check facebook and even download apps on app store, i think i went from -120 db to -100 db, im just not sure why but if its because i rooted, well i wish i knew i could do that from the start lol
also the gps thing fixed itself, i think it was due to my location (was at work but outside the building ) i had good reception but when i tried it further down the street it locked on immediately

[Q] texting app crapware

Hi,
Please tell me how to get rid of the god-awful slow texting app that comes with this phone, and replace it with the stock android texting app.
Thanks!
Are you referring to the AT&T messages app? 'Cause the SMS app that comes stock works fine for me :/
Stock messages app works fine for me. If you have root you may be able to find differnt message apps, but my first suggestion is to give handcent a try as it is my go to sms app for when I'm having issues with cusom ROMs being buggy with mms. Its got a threaded look to it, much like iphone.

It also has font packs and other stuff on the app store.

I far prefer GO SMS Pro, love the interface and features, but with all the third-party SMS apps I have an issue of double and triple texts being sent to people. I agree the Samsung SMS app is painfully slow. I hate using it, but it's my only choice because it doesn't send out duplicate texts. :/

Thats very odd, I've never got complaint of this. Have you googled the issue to see if there is a known solution or work around? As common as these apps are you can't possibly be the only one misfortunate enough to experience this. I have had issues in the past getting numerous notifications despite turning native notifications off for SMS, but thats an entirely different issue.
How do i replace the Samsung message app with the vanilla android one? The Samsung one is slow and is a failed attempt at copying iphone. The keyboard even blocks the send button!

Mostly I see people on ICS complaining about this issue, but there are several people on GB complaining about it as well, for both GO SMS and Handcent and a few others on Google Play.
I had the duplicate notification issue with Handcent - even though I had disabled notifications for the stock app AND frozen it. Didn't have that problem with GO SMS. Had an odd problem when I tried Chomp SMS, where all incoming messages were anonymous and upon trying to view them, the message couldn't be found. That even happened in the stock app, so long as I had Chomp installed. Uninstalling fixed that issue immediately.
But so far as I can tell, some people just have the problem, and most don't. I have yet to see a reply from any of the devs about the issue. I've tried completely resetting the phone to factory spec but I still got the duplicate message issue.
I really, REALLY want to use GO SMS. Although something else I noticed is that some people's messages were being sent to the wrong contacts... Perhaps I'll try the vanilla Android apk...
How do you try the vanilla android apk?

Thanks but I don't really want a third party version with ads. I don't get it...isn't there a plain messaging app that comes with android (like what was on the nexus one), or is it proprietary to every device? It seems like this shouldn't be such a difficult thing to install instead of the crappy samsung one. Am I missing something?
i'm surprised. the sms app is not bad i'm the note. I've seen worse. (though i am using the rogers version)
I'm coming from a rooted Inspire 4G (cyanogen) and I've noticed that the texting on the Samsung Messaging app is a bit sluggish. And some keys don't respond to my fast fingers.. Yet the app itself runs very fast (ie open app, open threads, go back, etc).
One thing I did was uninstall Swype through Titanium and I think I've noticed a difference in the keyboard speed. It may just be my imagination though

I'm using go SMS, no issues..as long as I leave stock installed and not frozen..if I do..no mms messages

[Q] Regarding the wakeup "lag" when screen turns on

Ive heard numerous times that it takes 1 or 2 seconds for the S3 to turn on after u press the home button, someone told me that it happens on all Sammy devices so i tried it on my SGS1 and there was no such delay, so im guessing its not down to the way Sammy makes their devices.
I also heard from the early reviews that S-Voice can be turned on directly from the lockscreen, maybe this is the cause for the delay. try turning S-voice off (not that your going to use it after the first week anyway ) and see if the problems persists, i also heard this from someone else and said that it does remove the delay.
Get back to me if it has helped.
I have a delay of around 1 second, and I have... like... everything turned off. S Voice is nothing I'm interested in so I have it all turned off and frozen in Titanium Backup. Same goes for unlock "toilet" sounds and ripple effects and whatnot, I'm not using any of it and I still have the lag.
Even GS1 has 1,5 sec delay
The "delay" is because the phone is waiting for a second press to see if you wish to load "s-voice".

I don't think it will, but it might depends how well samsung have linked the software
Kernel hacks can fix this, we did it on the s2.
I have noticed this as well with s voice turned off. My galaxy s was pretty quick but it had a custom rom built for speed and responsiveness.
Anyone noticing that after slide unlock that the home screen takes a while to come up? Takes a nice sec or 2 while all the app icons and the weather widget to come up.
I think sometimes the launcher has to reload after unlocking the screen, causing the delay

Kernel hacks didn't do anything on the S2 concerning the issue and specific cause. The issue apparently is modem related as it takes a long time to sleep and wake up, and the S3 has the same type of modem as the S2.
even the S2 had the s-voice like feature which would be activated in the very same way.
opening the s-voice app, going into settings and unchecking the "start s-voice (by double-tapp)" or something will solve your problem
You can set the home button to start up S Voice when double-pressed, but that means the system has to wait and make sure what you want it to do if you only press it once -- resulting in a pause. We've seen the same behavior any time an OEM decides to add functionality to a button with a double-tap, but this time its easy to fix. Just disable it in the S Voice settings and you're home free.

That doesn't sound right. The launcher just randomly takes its time to load, regardless of whether it's waking up or not.
Example; I was playing Reckless Getaway when I got an email notification. I quit out of that and got back to the launcher (Apex) instantly. Loaded up GMail and read my email. Once I quit out of that though, there was a 1-2 second delay before Apex loaded again.
I'd expect that after playing the game, not reading an email..

Agreed. The app you jump out from seems to be random. Even sometimes the same app launcher time is pretty random eg exiting Firefox sometimes launcher reloads but sometimes doesn't. Seems like the OS is killing launcher when something else needs the memory and then reloading it as you quit other apps.

If you use apex launcher and tick "keep in memory", you don't get this loading issue.
Also, it's not s- voice. I just disabled it in applications, so it's almost as if it's not even installed now, and there is still the 1 second delay. The big question is howeve... Why the hell does this even matter to any of you? After a week of owning this phone I never thought to myself "ohh this lag takes 2 centuries and is really annoying", no. It's about a second, sometimes it ot even that. Stop complaining, everyone has this "issue". It's not that important.

It's not only a second, IT'S HORRIBLE!!! Someone have to find a solution for that or I'm going crazy everytime I push the power-button
Edit: I thought I found a solution by turning off all effects and clock settings for the lock screen, but it worked one time and after that I still have the "one-second-lag" after pressing the power-button to get on the lockscreen. %&/*§
