So I've used google voice on my past phones, but for some reason whenever I get a voicemail on the Thunderbolt, it goes to my verizon account voicemail. I have changed it to default to google voice in the setting under call, I have set up my google voice like before. I'm not sure what else to do. I've uninstalled, changed the settings and everything like a million times too. Anyone know what I'm doing wrong? Thanks.
Verizon handles voicemail a bit differently. With GV you were able to set up voicemail automatically on some carriers, but for Verizon, you have to do an extra step.
Dial *71<Your Google Voice Number> and press Call. You'll hear a series of beeps and now phonecalls that go to voicemail will go to GV now.
Okay. I'll try that. Now when I switch ROMs and wipe my phone do I have to do that every time then?
Atrix4G Rooted!
Now it says please enter the number you wish to dial followed by the # sign whenever someone calls me...so I don't think it worked lol.
Atrix4G Rooted!
nevermind.
I'm having the same issue. Did you find a solution?
Call vzw there's a few other numbers you can dial I think but I can't remember them
I used *71(GV number), *90(GV number), and *92(GV number) and everything works fine. There was another thread on this a few days ago.
Ya that's them
*71 and *90 are redundant. *71 is no answer/busy forwarding (both conditions), *90 is BUSY only forwarding, so if you're using *71, *90 isn't necessary.
*92 not sure what that's supposed to do, it's not quickly found on VZW's website.
Additionally, apparently call forwarding (conditional) behavior is not the same in every VZW market. Go figure.
What about visual voicemail? It works with the Google voice app, but it does not show up under the "messaging" visual voice, even though I set it in settings to goole voice and not carier. Any ideas?

The stock Visual Voicemail app will NOT work with messages on Google Voice. They are two separate applications that cannot be linked.
Just check your messages in GVoice. Yes, this means you can't use the home screen messaging widget for voicemail, but such is life when using Google Voice.
Remember, using Google Voice takes away revenue from the carrier, since you aren't paying for their voicemail service. So they have no incentive to provide native support for it. You're pretty much on your own when you switch to GVoice.

Cool. God to know. Its not a big deal to use the Voice widget, I was just curious if I was maybe missing a setting. So its a limitation imposed by Verizon and not HTC if I read your comments correctly? Which means with a proper rom in the future I should be able to use the feature?
Your Gv voicemails are on a completely different system. I don't think it will be possible to use the built in vvm app for that ever.
Then why would they put it as an option under the Settings/Call/Voicemail options? I am not saying I don't believe you, it just seems odd to include it as an option for provider, then not use it in the app.
Oh I guess you can then. Surprise to me.
Oh wait you're talking about the phone settings. That's nothing to do with the vvm app. Thats just telling your phone what number to dial when you hold 1.
The gv app adds that option when you install it.
is their an app that can give you Visual Voicemail like iphone?
I love the android, but the voicemail system sucks.
will this maybe be something that will be in ICS?
have you looked into google voice?
I'm interested in this also. I miss my iPhone's visual voicemail.
Google Voice and YouMail look like viable options...
Does anyone here actually use either?
a lot of people use google voice. the transcriptions are pretty weak but the voicemail service is pretty convenient.
+1 for Google Voice

Try AT&T Messages. It has visual voice mail with transcription and it also serves as a hub for all your messages/calls/voice mails. I have been using it for a while its very good and free also.
like everyone said, use google voice. gvoice is da bomb

I tried this, it seemed to be slow, and freeze. It would not open at all for the first week. I could get in online, but on the phone it kept saying try later. Its an awesome concept, but implementation is poor on the current version.

Google Voice is the best. Voice Voice mail + free SMS + cheap international call (free to Canada) and deep integration with Android than any other platforms.
+1 to Google Voice if you *need* that type of functionality.
Google voice works great. Visual voice mail plus transcriptions, access from any web browser, it can email or text you the messages, etc. The transcriptions aren't perfect but 80% of the time I don't even need to listen to the message.
I'm using AT&T messages, and I love it.
It works flawlessly, with no slowness etc. My phone is on stock rom, and unrooted.
The only thing I don't like is that you also get notifications for sms, even though I prefer the stock sms app, so I end up with double sms notifications. I consider it a small price, since I've been dying to have a good visual voicemail app for a LONG time.
I have used google voice in the past, but had several annoying issues with it, and honestly just didn't like it.

Hi:
Thanks so much for the suggestion.
I had already thought of that, but the problem is that if I turn off the messaging notification, it disables the slide to missed text on the lock screen, which I love.
I am stuck crossing my fingers that At&t decides to update the program so it has more options.
Thanks anyway
At&T Messages prevented my phone from lighting up when a text was received.
I uninstalled it and things went back to normal. Drove me nuts trying to figure out why.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1298506
yeah, i just uninstalled AT&T Messages because I wasnt getting notifications and missed a bunch of texts.
Okay using Google voice now, and it's awesome. for some reason the first voicemail I got, GV transcribed the whole message, then after that all other messages said they can't be transcribed, whats with that?
the transcriptions are pretty bad, unless the person speaks clearly and slow. I woiuldn't worry about the transcriptions. I see them as a bonus if they work
So the visual voicemail they showed at the ICS presentation, was that just for Google Voice?
He said something like Google Voice mail integrated into the call log. I bet it is.

So far the SGS2 is great except for one thing, the antiquated voice mail system app.
As much as the iPhone sucked a chubby, it did have that one good feature. I’ve searched the Market and Forum for something comparable but came up empty handed. I’m not looking for Dialers, Contacts, Voice Dial, or anything else fancy; I just want that damn Apple Voice Mail interface.
Does anyone have a suggestion? Would love to see someone put it in the stock Phone/Dialer.

Install Google Voice from the market, and then run it. Just follow the steps.
Don't know why I didn't install this earlier cause it freaking rules.

you can use google voice for free texting from your actual number? I used heywire for free texting, but people that texted my real # weren't notified that I couldn't receive texts, then I split an "unlimited" with a friend for $30/mo
Google voice does it for free from your real # without error?

yup. Or you can choose a new gvoice number, like having 2 lines, but ones is totally free! And people can call and text that number, and you will receive it on your device, also you can choose before each call whether to call from your g voice number or your reg number.
I just upgraded from my Samsung Captivate which was running CM10 to the HTC One. One of the things I loved about the old phone was that all my voicemails would show up in my call log and I could play them from there. When I tried setting up GV on the new phone, I got a bunch of error messages and somehow the phone removed my old call forwarding rules and then couldn't reapply them. So I logged out of the Google Voice app and tried again. No dice. Finally, I went back and did it the old fashioned way by manually typing in the MMI code and managed to get the calls forwarded again to GV. When I went to the dialer app to manually switch the voicemail provider to GV, I again get the error messages and when it asks to still switch to the new provider I click OK. However, it kicks out another error message and then shows that nothing has changed and still lists AT&T as the default voicemail provider. So, has anyone managed to get this working properly or have AT&T and HTC once again colluded to completely bork functionality that works oh so well on stock Android?
Just got a response to my support request from HTC. Laughably, they claim they "cannot guarantee full functionality with Play Store applications." That is pretty pathetic. In their quest to differentiate, they eliminated one of the best features of Android in my mind. I hated dialing numbers and using the dialpad to access and control voicemail years ago. When Google made Google Voice available on Android, it was one of the factors that made me choose it over the iPhone. Then they made it even better than visual VM on iOS by integrating it into the dialer. This dialer from HTC is a huge step in the wrong direction. I don't need all this FB and Twitter integration crap. Just let me access my VM in the best possible way.
I have it working but I never got it to work using the Google voice app configuration.
It was still working when I swapped my son card to the HTC one from my gs3.
I had to go into the phone app and change the forwarding numbers manually. Also the voice mail number.
If that doesn't work I think you can contact at&t and they can fix it for you.
Wait...you have your Google voice voicemails showing up in the dialer app so that you can click play and listen to them without going into the GV app? I did manage to get the forwarding set up, but I want the voicemails to show in the dialer like they did on CM10.
Not working on Sprint and HTC One either

Same issue, voicemail set up, but I can not get the call log to show voicemails. Tried unchecking voicemail display as indicated in other forums, but doesn't work either way.
Bump...no dialer integration or notifications is a big problem for me as well.
Instead of making a new thread I will just bump this one. Did anyone managed to get they HTC One to integrate Google Voice visual voicemail into the dialer? I searched everywhere but couldn't find any info on that.
Maybe there are any 3rd party modifications that can fix this issue?
p.s Just to clear things for someone who reads between the lines my GV Voicemail is working fine, what I am trying to figure out is how to integrate it into dialer and get visual voicemail from there.

No luck. I stopped trying. I may give it another go.
Just installed ARHD Google edition Rom and visual google voice voicemail works great in there, but I prefer Sense based Rom so will go back to it. Shame visual voicemail doesn't work on it, seems like HTC broke the compatibility.
If anyone knows a solution that would be great!
So I like a lot of the roms out there that I've tried. But my biggest thing on most is Verizon's stupid VoiceMail app... Most of them don't have it installed and the copy of the app I have found usually doesn't work or crashes non-stop after I install it from TWRP.
I know there's YouMail (I think that's what it's called.) but I wasn't a big fan.
Is there either a way to stop getting the garbled text message when not using the verizon app or what?
I've noticed that if I don't use a rom with the Voicemail app I either don't get Voicemails or I get the garbled text message and it still doesnt' really work correctly.
I get my voicemail thru Google voice, but I also use the vzw messages+ app so no garbled texts. Well other then some rather humorous renderings of a computer program having problems figuring out some Oklahoma and Texas accents.

Yep you should be able to install the My Verizon app from play store. If not use http://apps.evozi.com/apk-downloader/ and sideload it.
Youmail sucks because of their horrible contact sync. It messes everything up. However someone made a different app for the service called Better Youmail and it is phenomenal!
I ended up contacting verizon on there twitter support page and they disabled basic visual voicemail and I've been back to using just the old one since.

Jasmine ROM and Visual Voice Mail.
Flawless.
If anyone is on an AOSP ROM and getting funky SMS messages instead of voicemail notifications:
Condition:
You are running without Verizon VVM "Messaging" app installed.
Symptoms:
When someone leaves a voicemail, you get a SMS message with a bunch of header info. The message starts with //VVMMMS... and usually includes the caller's number somewhere in the string.
You do not get a standard notification of a voicemail (no envelope in the notifications and/or status bar.
Information:
It is likely that your account is setup for Basic Visual Voicemail. The messages that you are receiving are push control messages that stock-installed Verizon apps would pick up and use to generate their own notifications. Since VVM is not installed, they come across as regular SMS messages.
Verizon has 3 different voicemail offerings at present: Voicemail, Basic Visual Voicemail, and Premium Visual Voicemail; the latter is usually a paid service. Based on which is included with your account/line, they determine how the notification should be sent; the app is a key component in the proprietary service.
Solution:
You may contact Verizon at their support 800 number and go through the prompts to get technical support. When you get there, ask them to change your voicemail setting to "IMS Voicemail" instead of "IMS Visual Voicemail Basic." This should allow you to get the standard notification and call *86 when you tap it. Keep in mind that this is something done on the carrier's side, so if you decide to install VVM or use a stock ROM that includes it, the functionality will not be there. If the paid service was included as part of your contract, you may have some difficulty in getting them to change the setting back to "IMS VVM Basic" without an additional fee.
If you install hangouts, you can configure your voicemail to go to the hangouts app. Not only will it transcribe it so you can read it, you can play it right from a thread like an sms message.
It's very neat.
I use Google Voice and have been for a few years. I like the fact they transcribe the voicemail for you. Also, anytime someone leaves a voicemail or I get a missed call, i get an email on my gmail account. The missed call emails are a life saver especially when the phone never rings to notify you of a missed call to start with which has happened to me a couple of times. You can also text and make phone calls from the Google Voice app as well.

It wasn't horrible, I just didn't like having an app like that. I know everything we do even on our phones is being watched/stored somewhere by someone most likely.
But I just didn't like having yet another party having access to my things. It worked, setting up the voicemail message with a slight pain for a bit till I got it working right.
The notifications worked, people didn't have issues leaving me messages etc. It worked is the main thing. I just personally didn't care for it.
Now that I'm back to using plain voicemail without the visual VM etc I'm happy with that.
