Hey there, I'm trying to root my S3 and a first step I wanted to make a nandroid backup, so i downloaded Odin and I used it to install recovery-clockwork-touch-6.0.1.0-i9300 onto my device, i rebooted into the recovery screen and I found myself in the stock recovery menu.
So i tried it once more, to no change in my situation, so I looked through the forums for a while and I found a thread by mskip about installing CWM and thankfully it had this
Stock Recovery being reflashed after a reboot?
There is an auto recovery restore system on stock roms that will reflash the Stock Recovery on a Stock Rom. If the restore files are renamed then CWM Recovery should not be overwritten after a reboot.
You need to be rooted and then delete or rename the following files:

/system/etc/install-recovery.sh
You can then flash recovery without it being overwritten.
You can also do all this through the S3 ToolKit

My problem being that I can't rename said files bacause my phone isn't rooted and the S3 toolkit requires rooting to do backups and such, and I can't root it because (unless I misunderstood) I need CWM installed.
So my question is : What can I do now? Can I root my phone in any other way ? Is there a way to get past this Stock recovery screen onto CWM?

Ok, so I looked around a bit and I just rooted it without a backup, it seemed safe enough.
Root went well, I backed up right after just in case.
Use cf root and flash via Odin that will give you root and flash cwm. Then you can continue with your nandroid backup. All though you can do the full root procedure using that toolkit, its one of the options. Hope I could help

i have searched in the forum i haven't found answer to my question.
I have rooted my galaxy tab without odin(using stock recovery and .zip file to install supeuser.apk) and i have installed ClockWorkMod by rom manager then i have done a nanodroid backup before installing CyanogenMod9.
In this way i haven't yellow triangle and my counter is still at 0 ;-).
Now i want to replace stock rom and stock recovery, i have replaced nanodroid backup. Now i come back to stock rom rooted, i can unroot it using another .zip file to be loaded via recovery but i still have CWM recovery.
Can i flash the stock recovery using clockworkmod? If possible i prefer not use odin. Is there a file like stock_recovery.zip to be flshed via CWM recovery?

You can find a .zip containing cwm recovery in the "retail 4g" section. It worked for my 3g model and I think the zip will cooperate with any tab.

Now unzip it, replace the recovery with your stock, zip it up and flash it through cwm.
I HAVE ONLY FLASHED PERSHOOT'S RECOVERY FOR CM9 THAT WAY, AND I AM NOT SURE WHAT HAPPENS WITH STOCK.

Download the proper firmware for your device/region, untar it and get the recovery.img.
Just fyi you can flash official firmware with odin without raising the binary counter (Or so they say. I haven't tried this yet). In that case though your device gets wiped, so make a full backup prior to that.

I am new to SGS3 xda forum....i am from Pakistan...its been 2 weeks since i bought a SGS3 (second hand)...probably of 3mobile U.K...i was told by the seller that the phone was unlocked in Pakistan....as i tried system update from settings...it said that my phone was modified and could not be updated....so i decided to install CWM Touch on my SGS3 in order to create backup of my current stock ROM (4.1.1)...my phone is not rooted yet....i followed the instructions given in the following link:

Odin took 1 second and my phone was booted....Odin gave the Message ''Pass!''...everything went fine as it should have been...but when i went into the recovery mod...Stock Android Recovery is opening instead of CWM Touch....noting my phone is not rooted yet....it is also normally booting and everything is fine....can anybody guide me about the problem that i am currently facing...and its solution as well....?? Help Would Be Appreciated...
Edit:Just Flashed CF-Root Pakcage Including SuperSU and CWM Manager with CWM v5.5.0.4....now it goes into CWM...but still one noob question....have my previous stock android recovery and CWM Touch been automatically deleted/replaced?...or they still exist?? Thanks
Sounds like you were trying to install a cwm without being rooted.
Cwm replaces the stock android recovery. You could now try flashing the cwm touch through your current cwm. Make sure its a zip. If you come and ask for help You should really follow a guide on xda though. They are the best guides around.

When you flash a recovery you will delete the previous recovery in doing so, your stock and touch are both gone - replaced with v5.5.0.4.
You can now boot into CWM and install a better recovery, try Philz touch recovery for instance.

Had no success in attempts to install CWM Recovery through ROM Manager (Recovery setup > ClockworkMod Recovery > Galaxy S2 i9100 > "does not have an officially supported...."). Also found the Recovery builds on the official site but no guides whatsoever as to how to install... oh so helpful
Finally came across a guide at galaxys2root[dot]com on installing recovery from download mode using Odin. Ran through the process and ended up stuck at boot with no way of proceeding. After a panic session, was able to recover from back-up (thank god I backed up the ROM and all data before attempting to install CWM recovery). Now I'm right back where I started with no idea how to go replacing the stock recovery.
Can someone please shine some light on the situation? At a complete loss as to how to get the CWM Recovery on the phone without bricking it.

1) Don't use Rom Manager. At all. Uninstall it. It will break recovery & cause bootloop eventually if you continue to use it.
2) Thread stickied near the top of Q&A has all the info you need. Essentially, any CWM you flash independent of the kernel will only persist until the next reboot. Reason being recovery is baked into the kernel on the S2 & isn't a separate partition like other phones. So you flash a custom kernel, you end up with rooted phone + permanent CWM.

A huge thankyou for pointing me in the right direction. I had since the original post found Mobile Odin (invested in the pro version) and installed the CWM Recovery from the their site... only for it to revert back to stock recover screen At least now I know why.
After much hunting around - I notice the stickied posts don't make it easy to find the correct kernel for for the AU i9100 - I found the PhilZ cmw6 kernel build.... used Mobile Odin to flash and all is now rosy.
Now question.... I was under the impression that ROM Manager was required as an install with CWM. I use Online Nandroid Backup to create full ROM/Data backups and trying out Nandroid Manager for selective recovery.... is that all I need then now that CWM is successfully installed in recovery?

Can't speak to those products as I've never used them, but Rom Manager & the S2 is a big no no. Doing nandroid backups, which is essentially a 'snapshot' of your phone at the time you make it, by simply booting into CWRecovery & also backing up apps/app settings with Titanium has always done the job for me.

I have just successfully rooted my S3 using "Heimdall Frontend" following the tutorial here:
However I found initially when leaving "No Reboot" unchecked I was unable to boot into CWM until I checked no Reboot then once the flash was complete I manually went into CWM by holding the recovery keys.
I then installed the SuperSu zip file on my SD card and rebooted my phone into it's newly rooted state.
HOWEVER.. I went to boot my S3 into CWM Recovery to flash a custom ROM and I'm only able to boot into the standard android recovery.. It says on the tutorial that versions 4.1.2+ need to tick "No reboot" otherwise the newer firmware simply wipes over CWM recovery every reboot..
I was under the impression that CWM was there as a safety net in case my phone ever played up and needed to be unrooted?

Is it a good idea to have CWM permanently flashed as my recovery? How would I revert back to the stock recovery should I want to unroot the device?

Hey guys, first time root here. HTC One AT&T 32gb
I was succesfully through the process, used a guide on htconeroot.com to go through all of the steps. Everything went just as expected and I had root access through superSU (was able to install and use root apps, such as Titanium Backup and AdFree). I used Root Manager to flash Clockworkmod because I saw a ROM I'd like to use in the future that only supported that custom recovery. After succesfully flashing that, I then made a backup using Root Manager. Everything was successful and expected, but upon reboot into my stock ROM from the original unrooted phone I had apparently lost SU binaries and root access. Also, ROM Manager (v5.5.3.0) cannot find any backups.
I tried reflashing superSU from the original rooting guide (UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.65.zip), and while it was successfully rooted, I still did not gain root access. I had read through some forums that using the stock ROM that came with the phone might lose root because of the stock recovery, but not sure if that is what happened. I have not installed a custom ROM on this phone yet.
Any help would be appreciated.
UPDATE: Solved, had to select "No" when rebooting from CWM on stock recovery option
