A Nandroid backup is a backup of your rom (not your pics of music etc.).
Yes if you have a rooted phone and CWM installed.
It's part of CWM, not an app or kernel itself.
Just reboot in recovery, go to Backup & Restore and Backup will be standing on top.
Hope it's clear now.

I'm a noob as well.. I've tried searching and haven't had much luck. Where can I download this nandroid or any cwm? I've read on one off the Roms I want to download I have to have a gb cwm? A little help please

you both should start searching the internet before starting a new thread...
in order to get cwm, the safest and easiest way to do so is through my eyes flashing another kernel through odin, that will give you root + permanent cwm...
search for it or feel free to pm me if you need any further assistance. Cheers.

If you have to ask this kind of questions you probably aren't ready to start rooting, flashing, etc. First read and learn a lot more.

[Q] safe current SGS ROM (original samsung) before I install e.g. CM7

hi!
I plan to root my SGS2 phone (using odin to put a CF-Kernel on it) and then I plan to install e.g. CM7...
But I want to backup as much as possible in advance to be able to return to stock as close as possible. because of this I want to backup my very on ROM (which is at the moment samsung 2.3.4 stock with TouchWiz), so that I don't have to download a stock-ROM or something like that...
1.) Is it possible to backup my current ROM (e.g. via CWM) so that I can return to this when I find out that I don't like CM7 for example? so that I won't need to download a separate stock-rom to get to my current stock-rom, because I backed my current ROM up myself?
2.) if this is possible, can I then use KIES again after I recovered my own current stock-rom after I decided to not use cm7 anymore and I want to eturn to my own stock-backup (that I backed up in advance - if it was possible (see previous question)) to then use KIES to update e.g. to icq cream sandwich when it's released next year on the "nomal" KIES-way...?
3.) according to that I have this post, where I ask, if it's possible to backup my stock-kernel before replacing it with CF-Kernel... I'd appreciate help there, too, very much!
thank you very much!!
Read what is your current rom at about section and take notes about rom and kernel.
Then go to Intratech's thread, find your firmware and original kernel,
Download and keep in a safe place.
Use Odin to flash back to stock wit the firmware you downloaded.
Cheers.

However its untested by me how you put it back.
Also look at Post 9 from oinylicious in this Thread, you can use Zergrush only for temp root instead of Doomlords Tool where you get permanent root.
This works for the whole Phone, not just the Kernel
I did exactly what your planning.
I had a stock phone and firmware.
Used cfroot kernel to root.
Did a nandroid backup or CWM backup.
Did a titanium backup of apps.
Flashed CM7 nightly Rom.
All was good but wanted to go back.
Did a CWM restore.
Was back on stock all good as before.
Did the same with miui.
Actually I can go back and forth as I have CWM backups of each type.
Hope this helps.

thank you! yes, this is what I inteded to to. when this really works, it's great.
sorry for the noob question but "nandroid backup or CWM" is already included in the CF-Kernel, am I right?
the resulting question would be if it's possible to backup the original kernel... before I flash the CF-Kernel... I asked it here...

If its the CWM and ROOT Kernel yes .

No but you should find matching kernel in stock roms thread .

hi gänsebraten, thank you very much for your hint. I read your linked post now. it looks very promising. and is exacly what i mentioned. but...
although, if it's still not shure if it is possible to restore the backed up files via your method... it's like playing with fire... I'm referring to your post...
did anyone tryed this way to backup and restore KERNEL and ROM and can confirm it works? I'd appreciate it very much

Um. What? If you do a full wipe, what magic process do you expect to install your apps for you?
then what's the point in backing up the data

Not sure you understand... if you do a CWM backup, that is basically taking a snapshot of your entire phone image. Firmware, apps and their data, contacts, the whole kit and kaboodle. From there, you can restore the backup if you bork your phone provided you can still get to CWM recovery.
Your Google account will track what apps you have installed officially through the Play Store (formerly known as the Android Market), and it might even re-install some or all of them for you (depending on the version of market/play store you have after your full wipe), but it won't retain your app data. So if you do this, you'll lose all your Angry Birds high scores, in other words. That may or may not be a big deal to you.
As 078gregory said, you can use TB (Titanium Backup) to back up and restore app data.
just want to add.. CWM backup does not backup kernel or modem... it does backup the gps patch and other patches tho...
Yes. It does backup kernel. I restored my GM/Siyah CWM backup on Sunday after trying CM9 for a few days and my kernel was most definitely restored. You are correct about the modem tho.

Bunch of noob questions!

So, a month ago i bought my xperia sola... I have already rooted it, unlocked it' s bootloader, and now, i am thinking about flashing a new rom, or just mess around with the one i already have(gingerbread 2.3.7)
My questions are:
1)Which kernel should i flash? I have the stock one which beggins with 6.0.3
2)If i should flash a new rom, which one should i flash(recommend the one you think is the best, no matter what)
3. If i flash a new rom my phone gets wiped doesn't it? What can i do to restore my apps after that?
Finally, can someone tell me how do I put clockworkmod recovery in this phone?
Thanks for taking some of your time to answer my questions

Hello
There are no better or worse kernels. It's always up to your needs and what you prefer. Some kernels support different stuff like Overclocking or other Governors for example but it's not like you can use good or bad kernels. Like i said, up to your needs.
The same goes for ROMS most of the time, but as you research you will find that some of them are optimized for things like Speed or Multitasking or battery stats for example. The list can go on.
For CWM:
This i think is for Gingerbread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1901134
and this for ICS: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2020893
Ok, i have decided to upgrade to ics... And then make a nanroid backup... But, how can i save my apps from being deleted during the upgrade? Maybe via titanium backup?
Also, how much size is nandroid backup gonna take?(my apps are about 1 GB...

One last question:How do ypu update the phone if ypu have deleted the phone's update center, and pc companion saying that it has to update its self but when you try to, you get an error and it force closes?

I do not know about nandroid. Titanium backup yes, would be my way of backing up the apps.
About your second question, search in XDA a custom or stock ROM that is in .ftf file so you can use Flashtool to flash it.
Ok, thanks a lot for answering my questions

One thing is flashing ftf file via Flashtool, the other is to try SUS instead of PCC.

[Q] X-U Any way to install CWM6 v6.x from linux? (Locked BL)

just realized the CWM6 backups made of Terra ROM are not going to be restorable with CWM5 if i need to.
Actually, the incremental backup feature of CWM6 is very useful on a X-U with limited internal memory!
Have googled, all the guides i found either used a windows installer (.bat) or included kernel for unlocked BL only.
Is it possible to repackage the linux installer or has anyone does this please? i don't want to risk bricking a phone doing this myself.
This is what i was previously using http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1948455 (5.x)
and Terra ROM includes a CWM 6.x http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=40447201 which is slightly buggy btw, some CWM options cause a hang but important stuff seems to work.
Not sure if this is an issue i may be able to
install stock ICS > Root > install CWM 5.x > install Terra with CWM6 > use CW6 to load another ROM, but awkward?
edit: whilst i'm here, i have another question about nandroid backups:
If i have two Xperia-U (which i should hopefully once my first is fixed by Sony..), can i restore the Nandroid from one to another? assuming same CWM version etc.
thanks to the mod who moved this.
anyone know about the 2nd question, restoring nandroid on different (but same model) phone?
