Writing to system - S-on - HTC Droid DNA

I'm just curious about this, I don't know much (anything) about android programming but to my understanding you can't write to system with s-on...
Just out of curiosity I opened up /system in root explorer and it seems like I can edit, delete, or create new files all I want.
Am I mistaken on what s-on limits us to?

Nope. You would be correct, although I might add that you can write in recovery.
You can set the system to rw with root privs. You still cannot write to or delete from it.

But I just deleted the flixter.apk and created a new folder with a file inside it in root explorer..

Duplicate.

I could change anything i wanted in system with es file manager with my Incredible 4G LTE unlocked, rooted, but with S-on. I thought S-off was only necessary for splash screens and radios.

No you couldn't. The only way you were writing with es file mangler was via s-off or not at all.

No, it actually didn't, you could write to it and it would stick after a reboot. I don't know why HTC changed it, but it was different on the rezound, and possibly the thunderbolt, but I didn't have that phone.

yea, iirc at launch s-on had a bug where it wasnt completely s-on, so you could write to /system. But they then updated it so that it was fully protected.

I had the Thunderbolt, I don't recall ever hearing of S-Off, so maybe that was something that came after. Not sure about the Rezound since this is my only HTC phone since then. But we probably shouldn't make a few pages of "yes I did" & "No you didn't".

How much access do you have to that phone if it is?
Nope S-ON. But I have unrestricted access for the next 30days
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA Premium App
I may be wrong here (I assure you someone will chime in if I am ), but at this point we may need to keep a look out for any S-OFF Phones as these have the best chance of having a SD Card we can take an image from. If I'm correct in my thinking, this alone wont help us as the individual card should be tied to that phone. Unrestricted access to such a phone would allow it to be studied at the very least.
Anyone know of any CID spoofers for mSD cards?
Well we have more than one. I'll check them all out and get back

Right. Only the OTA won't download on mine. I have a 30mbit connection for my wifi and Angry Birds downloads in seconds, but took the OTA 7 hours to get 3.5mb.
All of ours have S-ON RL...
Any idea what rl is?
Also if you can't download it OTA, I would assume renaming it to update.zip would work.

For some reason the Wi-fi on mine is screwy. 50mb connection from comcast and the router is right next tomine, same as my non 3d evo was on and I couldn't download a few games that needed to install data, would sit there and after about 3 minutes would say no internet connection....
It seems to work for apps and such in the market so I don't know. Just trying to provide as much info as I can. Just got it today too. Kind of buggy.
At one point would wake to lock screen and as soon as I pulled ring it went black, several times, not sure what made it work again.
Also, hit top button showed lock screen as only top half of screen. Had to reboot for this to clear....
I also know someone at the sprint store in my location and could ask him to look for a phone of that nature if we need it. Let me know.
i think the build number is old 1.11.651.3 i have 1.13.651.7

Then one might be able to find a chink in HTC's armor. For example, running fastboot/adb commands etc and comparing the output to normal phones. The missing functions between s-off and s-on would be significant.

I read in a few places that I need to use Goldcard to use OTA....any ideas if this is true or if I need to do something else??
BTW, I now have Hboot 1.40.00...instead of 1.30.00 so it won't even let me downgrade to factory shipping ROM.

Can someone help a noob with this? Just want to make sure I get this right and don't pooch something:
I have GB, rooted, Revolutionary s-off.
- Download the file to /mnt/sdcard/
- Boot into Recovery, and choose "install zip from sdcard"
- select the zip and done?
Is that all?
Edit: Just took the plunge and did this. Thx OP
Thanks, will try this tonight. I was so hoping to get rid of that activation nag.
Thank you very much my man, just what I needed.

This works perfectly.
I accidentally found another way around this... Over the last weekend I somehow enabled my 4G radio. When I opened my browser I was redirected to https://deviceselfservice.sprint.com/dsa/4gportal/welcome.actiob.c... (URL shortened) So I did a little googling and found that you can get one day of free service on 3G/4G by using the promo code Free Day (it is case sensitive)... After a reboot, my tablet was able to activate with no issues and since the trial expiration, I haven't been bugged about it since.
So... If you aren't rooted and don't feel like taking the plunge, you can get rid of the nag screen this way.
been trying that free day code, not working for me.
Googled it as well and it is the right code, but cannot get it to work.
Did you type it all as one word? Capital F and D?
Just did the fix and it worked, quick and easy to do.

umm no one else has any problems. You need to be rooted for it to work since it removes a system file. If something is screwed up you did something wrong. There have been hundreds of downloads of this zip and you're the first that's claiming it's not working.

food for thot(possible downgrade?)

happened across this this morning:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1547695
(thanks to jcase on twitter)
value could be a couple different things,to us:
1)downgrade if there was an explolit in older firmware
2)use it to sneek on the signed eng hboot by using that in the third step instead of an s-on ship hboot, then running an RUU with hboot removed to finish recovering the phone
id love to try it,but i dont have a linux machine and my linux skills are basically none
your thots?

Yeah, I am looking forward to Revolutionary or someone to make it a one click routine. That would be nice.
Interesting. If I were to guess, I would say that HBOOT unlocks something in order to prep for a flash of a PH98IMG.zip ... when you intentionally brick the phone by messing with the flashable file you've left it in an unlocked state, which you can take advantage of after rebooting by directly copying to the raw partition a bootable image. Obviously some knowledge of the underlying phone hardware is needed in order to find, modify, or build from scratch this bootable image and finding the proper partition into which it needs to be copied -- the directions in the linked thread are for a different phone and different code and probably different partition names would be required.
This may not even work on the Rezound.
And, I should add, the potential to permanently and irrevocably brick your phone is quite high.
It might work with the signed eng hboot. I would try it if I had a backup device. Hell if someone has one that is in terrible condition that is going to do an insurance claim reguardless, I would ask them to try it out. Or have me help them try it.
I'm gonna give this a shot. Worse thing that happens is, I go and buy another Rezound (or something else).

Yeah- I remember how easy it was on the Incredible to root. Then on the Thunderbolt it was a little harder (for those who aren't comfortable with adp commands) and eventually a one-click process came up. Now, it would be great to have something like that on the Rezound and maybe, just maybe, be able to root without this big, ugly UNLOCKED / RE-LOCKED showing in H-Boot!

awww yeah! here's hoping for some positive results!!
was just going to post this last night. good luck guys!
For anyone that wants to try it
Start with the OTA PH98IMG.zip
Then swap with our shipped PH98IMG.zip
So you should be trying to go from Hboot 2.11 to 2.10
Then when in linux, recover with the signed eng hboot image we have.
After that, I would recommend using fastboot to turn secure flag off (assuming you didn't brick and it worked)
Then flash a homemade PH98IMG.zip with everything except hboot in it.
What should be done first is identify which emmc block hboot is before you start this process.
woah... if we have a "signed" eng HBOOT why cant we just flash it over the one we already have?

You're welcome. I had to ditch Parallels 5 when I upgraded to Lion because Nova Software refused to support it on 10.7. I did look into getting Fusion but I opted for Virtual Box since it was open source. Plus, like I said, I rarely have the need to boot Windows, so why pay for something I'll hardly use? I think the only time I've had to boot Windows is when I tried to theme a few apps for my phone. I've yet to find a decent Mac equivalent to zip7.

It *should* be possible. The bootloader just locks the boot partition for one. Just not the system partition which is where ROM root access is. I'd have to go over it with a fine tooth comb to figure it out, just don't have the resources (or time) yet.
But again, I've been getting literally thrown around a gym and choked for the past week, so my brain isn't at a 100%. Anyone, feel free to chime in if I'm wrong.

As of now, no one has a method of rooting the phone without unlocking the bootloader through HTCDev.com. However, HTC no longer supports unlocking the bootloader on this phone, so everyone is SOL unless you unlocked before they dropped the support. We will have to wait until someone finds an exploit to add root functionality.
